Silent Hills “7780s” Number Explained by Hideo Kojima

Hint: It just translates to "Silent Hills".

Hideo Kojima may not have wowed the world with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain at this year’s Gamescom but he did have a much different, more terrifying revelation to reveal. This was “P.T.” or to be more precise, it was a playable teaser for Silent Hills, directed by Hideo Kojima with Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reeds playing the protagonist.

Needless to say, it scared everyone senseless but what was up with the “7780s” in the opening title? Kojima explained this at last in a new Konami video and noted that it was another way of saying “Silent Hills”. In Japan, 7780 is the postcode for Shizuoka. It sounds similar to “shizuka” which means quiet or calm and has been used a nickname by Japanese gamers for Silent Hill. So when you add an “s” at the end, it becomes “Shizuokas” or Silent Hills.

We’d say it’s clever by Kojima standards but not overtly cryptic. Silent Hills still has plenty of surprises in store though so stay tuned for more information.
