Sega took a bit of a gamble with Sonic Mania, its retro 2D platformer that returned to the spirit of the franchise after many years. However, critics and fans found this to be one of the company’s safest bets in years – Sonic Mania was critical success. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, it’s been a commercial success as well.
Coinciding with the announcement that Sonic Mania Plus would be releasing in Japan, it was revealed that Sonic Mania had sold over 1 million copies worldwide so far. The game has been available for Xbox One, PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch since last year and despite some controversies with the PC version’s DRM, it’s garnered strong acclaim.
Sonic Mania Plus is essentially a physical re-release of the game for Switch, PS4 and Xbox One. It brings a new Encore Mode with modified levels from the campaign, more bosses, a recreated boss from Knuckles’ Chaotix, a 32 page art book, four player competitive mode and much more. Stay tuned for more information on its release date in the coming months.
