Just what is Sony up to nowadays? It’s very hard to tell given that they’ve made some very odd, and exceptionally questionable moves lately. Well wouldn’t you know it, they’re making another move that seems to suggest that they’re ready to leave the PlayStation 3 in the dust and focus on their latest smash hit, the PlayStation 4.
Sony have announced, via press release, their plans to cease any and all operations at the Japanese Sony Semiconductor Oita Technology Center. The plant was previously involved in the production of packaging for the PlayStation 3’s Cell and RSX chips.
The decision was apparently made due to the “changing business landscape” and the final closure of the plant is expected to be completed by the end of March 2016. On a positive note however, the 220 employees of the factory will not be losing their jobs and will instead be transferred to other plants that will be taking over some of Oita TEC’s operations.
