With global supply issues hampering sales, it seems like hardware manufacturers are beginning to consider price increases for their products, with a $100 price increase recently having been announced for the Meta Quest 2, for instance. Can we expect something similar for available gaming consoles? Where the PS5 is concerned, Sony has, interestingly enough, refused to comment on the matter.
Speaking during the company’s recent earnings call, when asked about whether there were plans for a future price increase for the PS5, Sony’s executive deputy president and chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki said that the company had “nothing specific” to share on the issue.
“About a potential price increase for the PS5, at this point in time there is nothing specific I can share with you about prices,” he said (via VGC).
While the lack of an outright refusal might raise some eyebrows, it seems unlikely that the PS5 would get an outright price increase, especially given the stiff competition from Microsoft with Xbox Series X/S (the latter in particular, being a much cheaper purchase). Of course, Sony hypothetically introducing a new and costlier variant of the PS5 would be a different matter entirely.
Sony recently also announced that the PS5 has shipped 21.7 million units worldwide, with the company preparing for increased supplies for the coming Holiday season.
