Sony Reports Nearly 15 Million PS4s Sold In 2014

Sony's gaming division had a very good year, even if the company as a whole struggled.

Sony has released its financial information for the fiscal year of 2014, and the company is claiming it was a very good year for its video game division. In particular, its current generation console drove sales so well that it’s possible that popularity among consumers bled over to its mobile gaming device. In total, Sony says it sold just over 14.8 million PS4 consoles in 2014.

Those 14.8 million PS4s sold led to the company selling almost 18 million total gaming consoles thanks to the PS3 still being able to hold its own when it comes to last generation console sales. While some have claimed the PS Vita is a device on its way to extinction, the handheld managed to top the number of PS3s that were sold last year. Sony’s handheld saw more than 3.3 million units sold. It’s a safe bet that a large number of those were purchased in part because of the interoperability the Vita has with both the PS3 and the PS4.

More good news for a company that is struggling mightily overall when it comes to revenues is that the gaming division saw significant increases in sales across the board when compared to 2013. The company reported that software sales brought in revenues of more than $380 million while network and online services brought another $290 million in earnings.

It’s safe to say that one of the reasons the PS4, in particular, has been so popular is because the company isn’t shy about adapting and improving its software. Continued work on the PS4 should only mean even better sales numbers for 2015.
