Star Citizen Crowd-Funding Total Passes $181 Million

The ambitious online space sim title also has more than 2 million registered users.

Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen has come a long way since the original crowdfunding campaign launched in 2012. Though that campaign ended, the project has continued accepting funds from erstwhile players. It’s now crossed $181 million in funding with over 2 million registered users. That means the average registered user has pledged a little over $90 each.

Some players have purchased more than that though since you can pledge large amounts to have different ships from the beginning. Those who want to earn those ships can do so by playing the game and earning credits though. Currently, the game is in alpha 3.0 with the recent update 3.1 having released.

Star Citizen also had a single-player component called Squadron 42 that’s coming later this year which includes a number of single-player missions with a mix of space combat and first person gameplay. Big name actors like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and so on are also voicing characters in the story. What are thoughts on the game’s status? Let us know in the comments.
