Though DICE offered a number of reasons for Star Wars Battlefront lacking an actual story-driven campaign, it stopped short of saying that it was to ensure the game released alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Battlefront was out by mid-November while The Force Awakens arrived in December.
Now according to EA’s Patrick Söderlund on Investor Day, it was indeed a “conscious decision” to ensure both properties launched around the same time.
“We made [the choice] due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact. I think the team created a really good game based on the premise that we had. I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a very different demographic than a traditional EA game.
“So from that perspective, it’s a success. Are we happy with the 75 rating? No. Is that something we’re going to cure going forward? Absolutely.”
Does that mean a proper campaign in Star Wars Battlefront 2? Probably not but it’s always nice to dream.
