Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Is A Story-Focused Game, Chris Avellone Confirms

How did EA let this game get past the pitch?

Tomorrow, at last, we find out what Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the upcoming Star Wars game from Respawn Entertainment, will be like, but ahead of that, we have some juicy information to chew on. VG247 got the chance to speak to Chris Avellone, who is working as writer on this game, and has worked on multiple acclaimed games in the past, such as Fallout: New Vegas and Planescape Torment.

Speaking to the outlet, Avellone confirmed that story was extremely important to Respawn. In fact, Respawn views the story as an integral part of the Star Wars experience, according to him.

“Story was very important to Respawn. I think they do a good job of introducing various narrative layers into their games already, but they think story is an important part of what they perceive to be a Star Wars game. That’s one of the reasons I like Respawn, because when they tackle something like that, they understand what the important points are,” Avellone confirmed.

This is a refreshing change, since EA is still a publisher that emphasizes “live service” games, and believes that story-focused single player games no longer have a market. Respawn, thankfully, seems to have enough cachet to do the kind of thing that they want to do, even when other developers like BioWare are seemingly being pushed down the “games as service” path. At the very least, unlike BioWare, we know Respawn doesn’t have to use Frostbite engine for their game—Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is being built on Unreal Engine 4.
