Steam Curators Must Declare Paid Recommendations

Transparency for the win.

It’s a well known fact that despite it’s amazing sales and range of titles available on Steam, it could do with a little bit of quality control and a bit more transparency between certain developers and publishers, but today Valve have taken the first tentative step forwards.

The newly introduced Steam Curator system has seen an amendment to it’s terms and conditions that states, “If you’ve accepted money or other compensation for making a product review or for posting a recommendation, you must disclose this fact in your recommendation.”.

Meaning, if you’ve been paid off in any way to recommend titles on your curation list, you need to make it known. Why is this? Well there’s a big kerfuffle going on at the minute to do with corruption and collusion in the video game industry to push an agenda, cover up dissenting voices and falsely promote games.

Regardless, this should at least mark a decent step towards increased transparency.
