Steam Won’t Disable Downloads for Old Game Builds

Valve is actually working on a way to deal with "unowned content" and helping its partners remove builds for things like "copyright issues."

Recently it came to light that Valve may be removing the ability for Steam players to access older builds of games. This raised concerns for a number of reasons, not the least of which includes players using save data for older builds in games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (which usually wipes progress with each update). Modders also tend to rely on older builds if newer game versions break mod support.

However, as it turns out, Valve isn’t looking to disable the feature at all. In a statement to PC Gamer, it said that, “We are actually not planning to disable downloading old builds. What we are working on is an approach on handling edge cases involving unowned content, and helping partners more easily take down builds that need to be removed for things like copyright issues. We’ll have more to share on that work when it’s ready to ship.”

In the meantime, Valve is working on its new Steam Deck with Big Picture mode on desktops being replaced by its new UI. Releasing in December for $399, it offers quad core Zen 2 CPU, a custom octa core RDNA 2 GPU and 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. It also offers various storage options with the 512 GB NVMe SSD version for $649.
