Street Fighter 5 launched last week, and it has been a bit of a mess- the servers weren’t working for a while, the game lacks modes, and there is a complete and total paucity of single player content, to the extent that it feels like the game was launched at least a month before it was complete.
Since then, we have seen the game get slammed in player reviews over Steam, Metacritic, and Amazon, we’ve seen it underperform in the UK and in Japan, and now, it appears as though the PC version has just faltered worldwide. SteamSpy is reporting that the game only sold 100,000 copies on PC during its entire first week- consider that Fire Emblem Fates outsold it by a factor of three in just three days, on the Nintendo 3DS, a far less healthy platform. Things are definitely not looking healthy for Capcom’s fighter.
Hopefully, the upcoming content patches and the increased server stability will ensure the game has the player count it needs to survive beyond this troubled launch. Street Fighter 5 is available on PlayStation 4 and PC.
