Super Mario Maker 2 Online Will Let You Play With Friends With A Future Update

Nintendo has backtracked on the controversial decision to only allow online play with randoms.

Back during their Direct presentation dedicated to the upcoming platformer-slash-creation toolset Super Mario Maker 2, Nintendo confirmed that the game would feature co-op play, as well as online multiplayer and leaderboards- shortly afterward, however, they poured water over the excitement surrounding that announcement, when it came to light that the game would not let you play online multiplayer with friends, and would only let you matchmake with randoms.

It’s a decision that’s received a healthy amount of criticism, predictably enough, but it seems like Nintendo have been listening to all that criticism. They announced during the game’s gameplay presentation at Nintendo’s E3 Treehouse that Super Mario Maker 2 will indeed let you play online with friends after all. The feature will be added to the game with a future update, as many had hoped it would.

Super Mario Maker 2 is due out on the Nintendo Switch in just a few days, on June 28. The game will require less than 3GB of storage, so don’t worry too much about needing to clear up space for it.
