Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighter Pass 2 Will Be the Final DLC, Says Masahiro Sakurai

Sakurai also talks about the future of the series once the final round of DLCs is done and dusted.

By the time Nintendo wraps up the post-launch support for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it will surely have become one of Nintendo’s longest living games in terms of continued content updates. Since its launch in December 2018, the crossover fighter has received five additional DLC characters- and six more are on the way in second Fighters Pass.

As you might have guessed though, this second wave of DLC characters will be the final content for Smash Ultimate. Speaking to Famitsu (via Ryokutya), series creator and Smash Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai said that all six upcoming characters have already been decided – once again, by Nintendo, not Sakurai – and that after these six, there will be no more DLC for the game.

Sakurai also spoke briefly about the series’ future after Smash Ultimate’s support’s been wrapped up, and his answers were about as vague as you would expect at this point in time. He said that both he and Nintendo are unsure about the series’ future for now, and have no plans (or ideas) for a sequel right at this moment. Sakurai re-iterated that he will continue to direct games that fans (and Nintendo) want him to make.

It’s pretty likely that there will be a new Smash Bros. game eventually, but for the foreseeable future, there really isn’t any need for one. After all, the upcoming Fighters Pass Vol. 2 will take Ultimate well into 2021, so the current game has plenty of life in it yet.

As for the upcoming characters, though there’s no official word on who these will be yet, as always, there’s been plenty of speculation, and names such as Crash Bandicoot have popped up. id Software have also talked about having “bantered” with Nintendo about putting the Doom Slayer in Smash, while reportedly, Nintendo wanted Kingdom Hearts’ Sora for the game, only for Disney to reject the idea.

We have our own wishlist of characters we’d like to see in the game. Check it out through here.
