All three titles are available from August 1st to September 4th and are also playable by PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium subscribers.

Sony has announced the free monthly games coming to PlayStation Plus Essential (and Extra/Premium) subscribers in August. Starting August 1st, you can download Death’s Door, PGA Tour 2K23 and Dreams for free. They’ll be available to claim until September 4th.

Acid Nerve’s Death’s Door is playable on PS4 and PS5 and features a Crow, acting as a Grim Reaper, who harvests souls. After venturing to a realm where death doesn’t exist, you must gather several Great Souls to open Death’s Door. The isometric action-adventure title combines aspects of The Legend of Zelda and Dark Souls for a challenging but fan experience.

Media Molecule’s Dreams is part video game and part creation suite, with tools for creating music, animations, cinematics and games. It’s only playable on PS4 but has received significant support, including new single-player campaigns. If that weren’t enough, the developer’s newest game, Tren, is also available.

Finally, there’s PGA Tour 2K23 for PS4 and PS5, which offers pro golf. It features the usual 2K Games tropes like MyPLAYER, but you can also learn Skills and use Archetypes to customize them. With Casual Mode, a Course Designer, and more, there’s a lot for fans to dive into.

Acid Nerve and Devolver Digital's acclaimed Zelda-inspired action-adventure title has launched for Switch and PlayStation.

Developer Acid Nerve and publisher Devolver Digital’s classic Zelda-inspired action-adventure title Death’s Door launched for PC and Xbox consoles earlier this year, and was instantly met by near-universal acclaim among critics and audiences alike. Now, it’s opened the door for even more players to dive in and see what all the fuss is about. Death’s Door is available now on PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch- check out the new launch trailer below.

Death’s Door sees players playing as a crow that reaps the souls of the dead, with a structure defined by an overworld and dungeon-based progression similar to classic The Legend of Zelda titles. Within less than a week of its launch, the game had amassed over 100,000 players, and though updated figures haven’t been provided since then, developer Acid Nerve has said that the game’s success has exceeded all of its expectations.

In our review of Death’s Door, we awarded the game a score of 8/10, saying, “Even with a few issues, Death’s Door is a tightly designed, challenging game that does wonders with its classic Zelda-inspired formula.” You can read our full review through here.

Acid Nerve's excellent Zelda-like action-adventure title is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation consoles next month.

Acid Nerve’s Death’s Door came out this July for Xbox consoles and PC, and was instantly met with near-universal acclaim, being highly praised for its charming world, brutal combat, and tight level design, all wrapped up in an experience that resembled classic The Legend of Zelda titles in all the right ways. Death’s Door’s certainly seen its fair share of success, and the developer has been aware that there’s demand for the game to be brought over to other platforms as well- and soon that demand will be met.

At the recent State of Play, publisher Devolver Digital announced that Death’s Door will be launching for PS5 and PS4 in November. Shortly afterward, the publisher confirmed on Twitter that it’ll be launching for the Nintendo Switch as well.

On a PlayStation Blog post, Acid Nerve confirmed that the game will run in 60 FPS on the PS5, while it will also support the DualSense’s haptic feedback. From your attacks to even your movement, expect the feedback for all of it to reflect “the weight, speed, complexity, and feel of each impact”, as the developer puts it.

Death’s Door is currently available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC, and will launch for PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on November 23.

In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 8/10, saying, “Even with a few issues, Death’s Door is a tightly designed, challenging game that does wonders with its classic Zelda-inspired formula.” You can read our full review through here.

The developer also states that launching the game as an Xbox console exclusive was always the plan, but knows that a Switch port is in great demand.

Acid Nerve launched their Zelda-style dungeon-crawling action-adventure title Death’s Door recently, and have been enjoying great success on multiple fronts, having been met with near-universal acclaim and having amassed over 100,000 players in less than a week. As you’d expect, the developers are thrilled with how the game is performing.

Speaking to 9news, David Fenn – one half of the two-man team at Acid Nerve – said that the game’s success has met Acid Nerve’s “wildest expectations.”

“Nothing could’ve gone better,” Fenn said. “It’s kind of just our wildest expectations have been met.”

Acid Nerve’s Mark Foster went on to remark that Death’s Door being an Xbox console exclusive was part of the plan from the get go, and commented on its success despite the fact that it’s not available via Xbox Game Pass. “It was always Xbox exclusive, that was the plan from the very beginning,” Foster said. “It seems like people are actually willing to buy a game in 2021, which is a nice surprise.”

Of course, given Death’s Door nature as an indie game and the fact that it’s so heavily inspired by classic Zelda games, it goes without saying that there’s quite a lot of demand for the game on the Nintendo Switch. And while Acid Nerve has nothing to announce right now regarding any ports, the developer is aware of that.

“There’s no current plans we can announce today,” Fenn said, “but Switch is a very popular request for game developers these days.”

Currently, Death’s Door is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. You can read our review of the game through here.

Acid Nerve and Devolver Digital's top-down action-adventure title is enjoying strong success to match its critical reception.

Acid Nerve and Devolver Digital recently launched Death’s Door for Xbox and PC, bringing an action-adventure game inspired by classic The Legend of Zelda games, and it’s attracted nearly universal praise from critics and audiences alike. And it seems the success it’s enjoying is reflecting that.

Developer Acid Nerve recently took to Twitter to confirm that Death’s Door has already amassed over 100,000 players. The game launched less than a week ago, on July 20, so this is a pretty impressive milestone. This does not, of course, reflect the game’s sales, but it’s a notable accomplishment nonetheless.

Death’s Door is available now on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. In our review of the game, we awarded it a score of 8/10, saying, “Even with a few issues, Death’s Door is a tightly designed, challenging game that does wonders with its classic Zelda-inspired formula.” You can read our full review through here.

The isometric hack and slash title, Death's Door, has scored very well with critics. It's out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

Having launched earlier this week for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and PC, Acid Nerve’s Death’s Door has racked up quite a bit of critical acclaim. To celebrate its positive reception, a new trailer has been released by publisher Devolver Digital. It highlights the praise while showcasing a mix of gameplay and cutscenes.

Death’s Door is the story of a crow, except this one reaps the souls of the dead. Everything is business as usual until one particular soul is stolen by a thief. It’s the crow’s job to retrieve it, even if it means traveling to a strange world where things never die.

Taking inspiration from old-school titles in The Legend of Zelda series, Death’s Door offers an isometric perspective with hack and slash combat. For more details on what makes the game so much fun, check out our official review here. It now remains to be seen whether it will release for other platforms like PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Devolver Digital has released a cinematic launch trailer for the charming yet challenging Zelda-inspired action-adventure title.

Acid Nerve and Devolver Digital’s action-adventure title Death’s Door has turned a few heads of late, and those who’ve been looking forward to the game can now finally get their hands on it. The game is out now for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC, and to celebrate its release, Devolver Digital has published a cinematic launch trailer to give you a taste of what the adventure has on offer. Check it out below.

Death’s Door sees you playing as a crow that reaps the souls of the dying, and for those who enjoy the classic Zelda formula, there’s a lot to like here. Item-based progression, plenty of emphasis on exploration, dungeons based on item-focused progression and puzzles, and tense and challenging combat and boss fights- it’s all presented and accounted for here, in addition to oodles of charm.

In our review of the game, we said, “Even with a few issues, Death’s Door is a tightly designed, challenging game that does wonders with its classic Zelda-inspired formula.” You can read our full review through here.

Acid Nerve's Zelda-inspired action-adventure title is an absolute joy, in spite of a few flaws.

When talking about Death’s Door, comparisons with The Legend of Zelda are impossible to avoid, given just how much Acid Nerve’s action-adventure game borrows from Nintendo’s franchise- more specifically, from that classic Zelda formula that persevered for so long before Breath of the Wild came along and completely tore up the rulebook. As great as Breath of the Wild was though, there’s still ravenous hunger for that old-school Zelda experience amongst the masses, and Death’s Door is here to give the people what they want. The best part? Not only does it borrow plenty from the Zelda template, but unlike so many other games that try the same, it also does it very successfully. As someone who loves games like A Link to the Past and all the other games like it that it spawned directly or indirectly, I’m ecstatic about how good Death’s Door is.

In Death’s Door, you play as a crow employed by the Reaping Commission, essentially working a 9-to-5 job reaping souls of the creatures whose time in the world of the living has come to an end. When one of your jobs goes wrong because of an unforeseen complication, you’re forced to go back out there and fix your errors. But what starts as a simple mission to reap the soul that you were originally told to reap turns into a journey of much larger proportions- one that may very well end up changing the very cycle of life and death itself.

"As someone who loves games like A Link to the Past and all the other games like it that it spawned directly or indirectly, I’m ecstatic about how good Death’s Door is."

Story isn’t exactly front and centre in Death’s Door, but the narrative bones here are solid. Depending on how much you choose to explore at certain points in the game, you can uncover more flavour text to flesh out the story, which reveals some pretty interesting details, and though I wouldn’t go as far as calling it “captivating”, I would definitely say that I was pleasantly surprised at how invested I was in Death’s Door’s narrative. Of course, what helps is that the game is just overflowing with charm and personality, thanks to witty dialogue and an assortment of bizarre characters that are impossible not to adore- like a guy who has a pot for a head and is appropriately named Pot Head, or a musician who sings and write some pretty unforgettable so-bad-they’re-amazing songs.

Once you set out on your journey, from there, you’re basically playing a Zelda game- from the top-down camera to the dungeons-based structure, from the focus on puzzles and exploration to the lock-and-key metroidvania level design, Death’s Door wears its Zelda influences on its sleeve.

What’s striking about Death’s Door is how it instantly just feels great to play. The movement, the combat, the way it keeps building on its ideas, the simplicity with which it conveys so much through pure gameplay- it feels very old-school in its design sensibilities, and I mean that in the best way possible. The pacing here is immaculate, and you’re always constantly moving from one challenge to the next. Puzzles, (most) combat encounters, entire dungeons and areas last exactly as long as long as they need to, and do everything they can with their distinct themes.

What helps with that, of course, is the excellent level design. The dungeons and the areas leading up to them are all impeccably crafted, characterized by metroidvania-esque design that sees them looping in and around themselves. This means you’re constantly returning to areas that you’ve already been to, either because you’re backtracking or because the path you’re on just naturally takes you back there, and unlocking shortcuts to cut down the distances you have to travel in the future feels as satisfying as you’d imagine. If there’s one thing I can fault the game for in this area though, it’s that it has no map function. For a game that emphasizes exploration and backtracking in intricate and layered environments as much as Death’s Door does, the lack of a map is downright baffling.

"What’s striking about Death’s Door is how it instantly just feels great to play. The movement, the combat, the way it keeps building on its ideas, the simplicity with which it conveys so much through pure gameplay- it feels very old-school in its design sensibilities, and I mean that in the best way possible."

Like Zelda games, Death’s Door also puts heavy emphasis on item-based progression, which means you’ll regularly come across spots in the world or in dungeons where you can’t progress until you’ve got a certain item. Something like that never fails to compel players to backtrack and explore, and Death’s Door is well aware of the fact- it leverages that technique time and time again, and does it quite well. Beyond that, things such as hidden collectibles, optional mini-bosses and combat encounters, and other rewards – such as new weapons – also constantly encourage you to explore every nook and cranny of whatever environment you find yourself in.

Alongside exploration, combat is the other big pillar that holds Death’s Door aloft, and it’s the very definition of simple yet compelling. Light attacks, heavy attacks, and ranged/magic attacks are pretty much the only thing you have at your disposal, which means that at its core, combat in Death’s Door is quite simple. But with an impressive amount of variety in the enemies you run into and the attacks and movement patterns they employ, and with how the game keeps mixing and matching these enemy types to constantly keep you on your toes, combat ends up feeling far more complex and nuanced than you’d imagine.

Archers that like to hang back, enemies that throw magic balls at you and like to teleport, brutes that like charging at you with a shield and a giant hammer, ape-like foes who like to jump around and throw a boomerang at you from afar, and of course, the set-piece boss battles- Death’s Door keeps introducing new enemy types at a steady pace, and it keeps finding increasingly devious ways to use them. Suffice it to say, combat encounters can get pretty tricky at times, especially when the game starts using environmental hazards, like lasers or moving platforms or crumbling bridges, and tricky arenas where dodging without paying attention to your surroundings can mean falling to your death.

For the most part, Death’s Door’s difficulty hits the sweet spot – more than a few times, I swelled with satisfaction after getting through a particularly challenging boss fight or combat encounter – but there are a few encounters in the game that end up feeling a bit too frustrating. They feel like they’re trying to brute force their way into being challenging rather than achieving that level of challenge with smart design. In these encounters, the game simply throws too much at you, and the pace comes to a grinding halt as you try repeatedly to get past a frustratingly designed encounter. The issue feels all the more aggravating given how perfectly paced the game otherwise is.

"Death’s Door keeps introducing new enemy types at a steady pace, and it keeps finding increasingly devious ways to use them."

While exploration and combat in Death’s Door are top-notch even in spite of a few niggling issues, one area where the game stumbles in crucial ways is the progression. Killing enemies gives you souls, while you can also net large quantities of them by finding soul orbs (which is another way the game encourages exploration), which you then spend in the game’s hub location on one of four different trees- but the rewards feel far too granular. On paper, things such as more attack power or greater speed to reduce the time between dodges sounds excellent, especially in light of how combat in Death’s Door functions, but the results don’t feel tangible. On very rare occasions did I feel like the souls I was spending were making any noticeable difference to my abilities. Mostly, I was doing better because I was getting better at the game – which is its own kind of reward, of course – but it’s disappointing that the system that does exist in the game didn’t engage me on a deeper level.

Death’s Door does stumble, but never so badly that its many immaculate strengths are overcome by its shortcomings. Excellent design, brisk mechanics, and a lot of charm make this feel like it belongs in the pantheon of Zelda games by any metric except for its name- and if you’ve been looking for something to scratch that classic Zelda itch, there’s no better game releasing on the market this month than Death’s Door to meet that need.

Of course, along with their trusty scythe, the Crow can also use different abilities like a chain-hook to close the distance on enemies.

Developer Acid Nerve and publisher Devolver Digital have also showcased new gameplay for the upcoming action-adventure title.

Developer Acid Nerve’s isometric action game Death’s Door has been turning heads. Recently, we got a look at some gameplay, and in their E3 stream today, publisher Devolver Digital provided another update on it, and confirmed a specific release date. Death’s Door is launching on July 20.

Death’s Door has a fascinating premise, and sees you playing as an ordinary Crow that reaps the souls of the dead. When a soul assigned to you is stolen, it falls to you to track down the thief and finish what’s, in essence, just an ordinary day job for you.

The combat looks fast paced and frantic, mixing magic, melee, and ranged weapons, and squaring you off against all sorts of enemies, from beasts to demigods. The art style and the setting put together are promising what should be quite an interesting adventure. Take a look at its newest trailer below.

When Death’s Door launches on July 20, it will be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
