Work on the unannounced Blade Runner game had begun in September 2024, but the title has since been cancelled with no details.

Supermassive Games, the studio behind narrative horror titles like The Quarry and The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, was seemingly working on a game based on the Blade Runner franchise. According to Insider Gaming’s Mike Straw, the title was ultimately cancelled before it was announced.

While Supermassive Games hasn’t directly confirmed this yet, the report indicates that the title would have been a “character focused, cinematic, action adventure game.” It was expected to be titled Blade Runner: Time to Live, and would have featured a story that would take players between 10 and 12 hours to finish.

Work on the game had started back in 2024, with pre-production being kicked off in September. The writing team behind Blade Runner: Time to Live was going to be the same team that worked on The Quarry. While it has now been cancelled, the title was slated to have an internal protype developed by September this year, before going into full production.

Blade Runner: Time to Live was going to be a cross-generation title, coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, as well as the next generation of consoles released by Sony and Microsoft in 2027. According to the report, gameplay in the title was seemingly going to be more involved than the narrative-focused games that Supermassive is otherwise known for.

Rather than playing like an interactive movie (like in The Quarry or Man of Medan), Blade Runner: Time to Live would instead feature stealth, combat, exploration and investigation as the “four pillars” of its gameplay. The title was also going to have some sort of character progression, with upgrades to skills and abilities being unlocked.

The story of the game would revolve around a vintage model Nexus-6 named So-Lange, who would explore the undercity of New Zurich. While the story would start with So-Lange being tasked with taking out the leader retire underground replicant network leader Rev, there would be betrayals and a quest for vengeance that players would then undergo. The game was slated to be set in the year 2065 – 18 years after the events of critically-acclaimed movie Blade Runner 2047.

“Journey from the teeming undercity of New Zurich 2065 to the eerie remnants of the forgotten world beyond,” read the descriptions of the game according to the report. “Under orders to retire Rev, the mysterious and ruthless leader of an underground replicant network, you are betrayed and left for dead in a brutally hostile environment.”

Ultimately, while no real reason has been revealed for why the title was seemingly cancelled, issues seemed to have arose with Alcon Entertainment, who owns the rights to the Blade Runner IP. The title was reportedly cancelled some time in late 2024.

For what it’s worth, there has been a video game adaptation of Blade Runner in the past. Titled Blade Runner, the game is a point-and-click adventure title that was released back in 1997. It is currently playable on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch through an Enhanced Edition release from back in 2022. Blade Runner 2033 was another title announced for PC and consoles back in 2023. However, no new details about the game have been revealed since its announcement.

Check out some gameplay from the newest trailer for upcoming narrative adventure game The Expanse: A Telltale Series.

During IGN Fan Fest, developer Telltale has released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming The Expanse: A Telltale Series. The trailer gives us a great look at the upcoming game, including the kind of Telltale-styled gameplay the studio is known for.

Going by the trailer, players will be able to explore quite a few places in The Belt, including derelict and destroyed ships, and sites of gruesome pirate attacks. It is worth noting that the trailer features footage from a pre-alpha build of the game.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series puts players in the shoes of Camina Drummer—played by Cara Gee—as she explores the intricate setting of the Belt from the sci-fi books and TV series, The Expanse. The Expanse: A Telltale Series was originally announced in December 2021. Developer Deck Nine—known for Life is Strange: True Colors—is also involved with the development of the game.

Telltale is yet to announce a solid release date for The Expanse: A Telltale Series, but it is expected to release in Summer 2023.

Technical issues have now pushed the game to some point in the future.

Nightdive Studios has become something of a legend when it comes to remastering old classics so they don’t get too lost to the past. One such game that they were looking to do that with was 1997’s Blade Runner. The adventure game was not directly based on the 1982 film, but is a midquel, with some characters from that movie showing up. It was largely lauded and seen as ahead of its time. But it seems as if some of that time did catch up to it, as some technical issues are leading to the recently announced Enhanced Edition being pushed back.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick confirmed that the game had been pushed back. Despite seemingly having solid progress so far, you can see some comparisons of the cinematics here, they seem to have hit a wall. It seems the studio is trying to find more of the original source code and assets, most of which were thought lost and only recently rediscovered. Still, Kick says the game will still come, just now they have to put it as a TBD (To Be Determined) date for the time being.

“We’ve had some discussions with EA about what else is in the vault they found regarding Blade Runner, and we haven’t been able to get a clear answer,” Kick said. “And even if there was something, it’s very unlikely they would release it to us for legal reasons, mostly, which is a bit of a disappointment, because we were hoping to at least get the original audio recordings. So we’re basically working off what was in the original game at this point and not having access to any original stuff.”

It’s a shame and hopefully they can pull together what they need to finish the project. But if you’re curious, the original non-remastered version of Blade Runner was recently re-released on GOG, which you can check out through here. We’ll keep you updated as more information on the Enhanced Edition comes.

Get a look at what to expect from this adventure game's newest remaster.

1982’s Blade Runner is an interesting case study in film. Initially, it was a flop, but it managed to capture the imagination enough to continue to be influential for years to come and even spawned several continuations. One of those was 1997’s adventure game, simply entitled Blade Runner. That game was largely acclaimed, and was recently announced to get a remaster by Nightdive Studios. We now get a look at what to expect in the game’s many cinematics.

The latest trailer shows a comparison between the original release and the upcoming Enhanced Edition. The game always had a pretty sharp style, so the original doesn’t look bad, but the framerate change (going from 15FPS to 60FPS) is incredibly noticeable and the resolution bump cleans things up. Despite sharing the name of the film, the game is actually a sidequel that intersects with the movie’s plot and features the likeness of some in the film’s cast.

Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition is set to release this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

The legendary adventure game gets a makeover.

Blade Runner has always had something of a special place in cinema. Originally a financial flop after extensive studio meddling, the film’s reputation continued to grow and be influential to science fiction ever since. Despite Blade Runner being a financial failure, it’s managed to get several continuations, with one being the 1997 video game that shares the same name. And now that game will get another time in the sun.

It was announced by Nightdive Studios and Alcon Entertainment they will release Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition. It will be a remastered version of the original PC title, using the KEX game engine that was used in the remasters of Turok and System Shock that Nightdive also worked on.

Despite sharing the same name as the 1982 film, the game is actually a sidequel following detective Ray McCoy as he hunts replicants (essentially cyborgs). It’s events intersects with the film’s plot and characters. It was highly praised at the time of its release for strong writing and an innovative take on the point-and-click adventure genre. The Enhanced Edition will release sometime this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. You can get the original, unaltered PC release via GOG now.
