Animated by Powerhouse Animation and with music by Tee Lopes, the opening showcases an epic battle in Eggman's dreamscape.

Sega and Sonic Team have released the opening animation for Sonic Dream Team, its Apple Arcade-exclusive platformer that’s out next month. Directed by Tyson Hesse and animated by Powerhouse Animation with music by Tee Lopes, it sees Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Cream and Rouge battling against Eggman and his latest schemes. Check it out below.

Unlike previous titles where Eggman relied on technology, he has The Reverie, which can turn dreams into reality. As a result, players have to venture into his dreams and ultimately stop him. The gameplay resembles more of a 3D action platformer, compared to the recent Sonic Superstars, with different movement types depending on the character.

Sonic Dream Team launches on December 5th and will be playable on iOS, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. Sega hasn’t announced plans to release it on other platforms, though it could happen eventually. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.

Use your controllers with your Apple products soon.

Mobile gaming has always been a different beast than console gaming, largely because of its control method. That, in and of itself, probably isn’t going to change much, but more options for console players to adjust to mobile games are happening, with support for both Xbox One and PS4 DualShock controllers soon to be supported on Apple devices.

We already know that Apple is planning to move more into gaming with their Apple Arcade, and now it seems they are adding in traditional controller support, too. As announced at WWDC 2019, both the new tvOS and iOS 13 will see support, meaning that you can potentially use either your Xbox One or PS4 controller on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV (via The Verge).

Right now there’s no official date for the updates, just that Apple is aiming for fall of this year. The Steam Link app was also recently added to iOS, so it’s entirely possible that you could use this in tandem at some point in time, though nothing is confirmed. We’ll keep you updated.

The game looks and sounds gorgeous, and seems very reminiscent of Journey.

It has been a while since we’ve received new information about ThatGameCompany’s Sky. If you’ve seen or played Journey by the same developer, then this game will look quite familiar to you. A new 30 minute trailer has been released for the game, and we now get to see how the game differs from Journey.

In the trailer, we see the character first traverse around the environment by foot until finally gaining the ability to fly. Towards the end of the video we get to see the character fly through large clouds, and it looks gorgeous. The distinctive art style and soothing music complement each other perfectly. The difference between this game and Journey is that it will feature a more active multiplayer experience as players will have to cooperate with each other so as to achieve certain goals.

Sky will first be releasing for Apple devices including the Apple iPad, Apple iPhone and Apple TV. We’ll have to wait and see if the game will also make its way onto other platforms eventually. You can check out the new trailer below.

It looks pretty pretty.

Journey developer thatgamecompany’s new game will be called Sky– and at least at launch, it will be exclusive to iOS platforms. The game got a grand reveal during Apple’s iPhone keynote event back in September, but we haven’t seen or heard much of it since. Thankfully, today, via IGN First, we got to see six minutes of gameplay footage for the title.

The new game is supposed to be a ‘global social adventure’, and seems to retain the same penchant for artistic graphics, and unusual multiplayer, that made Journey so beloved among players back in 2012. The game looks well optimized for mobile devices, and it looks like it will be centered aroun the kind of control finesse touch screens can provide (not much)- so it won’t have the control issues games made with a console development mindset often suffer from.

Sky is due out on iOS and Apple TV. Right now, we don’t have a release date.

Thatgamecompany's next big adventure will arrive this Winter for Apple devices.

Thatgamecompany’s newest game has been revealed and it’s called Sky. Looking to carry on the legacy of the studio’s critically-acclaimed Journey, Sky seems to involve players venturing out into a world of clouds together. The goal, like Journey, appears to be fairly mysterious but we can dig it. Check out the reveal trailer below.

Sky has been in development for several years and follows on Journey’s formula of playing together with your loved ones. That’s one of the reasons that it’s coming to mobiles. Thatgamecompany describes it as a game “specially created to be played, and shared, among loved ones and family”.

It’s perhaps worth noting that Sky will be coming to iPhone, iPad and Apple TV first this Winter. Don’t worry – it’s not exclusive to just those platforms. However, when it hits Android, is there a chance that it could come to consoles and handhelds in the future? Here’s hoping because Sky looks absolutely enticing.

To learn more about Sky, you can head to the studio’s official website. What are your thoughts on the reveal trailer? Let us know in the comments.

Apple's new TV box isn't exactly a gaming console, but it does have some perks for gamers.

In the last decade or so, Nintendo has taken a lot of cues from Apple, from interface to branding to product design. Yesterday, Apple returned the favor when they announced the new Apple TV, which essentially looks like Apple’s take on Nintendo’s Wii. The new Apple TV is the third generation of Apple’s multimedia set top box, and in Apple’s words, is ‘the foundation to the future of TV.’

The Apple TV breaks down the TV viewing experience to apps, with an overall search and recommendations function powered by Siri tying everything together. It also gets the App Store to allow for third party apps- this means that the floodgates are now open, and games are coming to the Apple TV, making for the first big screen Apple gaming experience.

Indeed, games are a major focus of Apple’s pitch for the new Apple TV. The new remote for the APple TV, for instance, features Wii Remote like acceleremoters and gyroscopes, and uses those inputs to allow for gameplay on the big screen. It also has a touchpad on the top. In addition, the hardware also supports third party gaming controllers over Bluetooth.

Some of the big games announced for the Apple TV yesterday included Crossy Road, Disney Infinity 3.0, Guitar Hero Live, Transistor, Rayman Adventures, and a brand new Amplitude developed exclusive.

The latest version of Apple TV will release in late October 2015 in two configurations of 32GB for $149.99, and 64GB for $199.99, with the new device to feature a 64-bit A8 chip, IR receiver, 802.11ac Wi-Fi access with MIMO, and integration with Bluetooth 4.0. Stay tuned for more coverage.

Can Apple pull off the upset that no Android microconsole has managed so far?

The new Apple TV is getting ready to take on your Xbox, PlayStation, and Wii as the gaming center of the living room. Apple already commands massive third party support, as well as cross platform development tools that make development for their platforms an attractive prospect, so the threat of the new Apple TV is not one to be taken lightly. Now, it seems like it will have another arrow in the quiver, which will help it undercut the existing consoles- it might come at a very cheap price.

Speaking to The New York Times, insiders reported that Apple is planning on keeping the price of the device low- at $149, it would be more than twice as expensive as the current, three year old model which retails for $69, but it would still be $150 cheaper than the Wii U, $200 cheaper than the Xbox One, and $250 cheaper than the PS4. With Apple’s branding on it, it poses a serious threat to all of them.

The Apple TV will be announced, alongside a new iPad and two new iPhones, at Apple’s media event tomorrow. Stay tuned for further news.

We’ve long been waiting for an Apple gaming console, and we may be on the cusp of getting one- the Apple TV, Apple’s TV set top box that provides video on demand and media management, will be getting a refresh at the Apple event on September 9 where the new iPhone is also expected to debut- and apparently, this new Apple TV will have an extremely strong gaming focus.

9to5Mac reports that the Apple TV will now have deep, integrated support for gaming, representing Apple’s largest-ever effort to lure players from traditional consoles. The new Apple TV will allow for downloads of games from the App Store directly, a bundled remote control to control these games, as well as support for more complex, console-style Bluetooth game controllers with the pressure-sensitive buttons and joysticks.

This Apple Tv is expected to start retailing for just $149, which would lead it to undercut every single major console on the market entirely. If Apple can get the kind of major third party support for the Apple TV that they did for their iOS devices, then the Apple TV could theoretically impact the console market in the same way that the iPhone and iPad did the handheld market.

We’ll know for sure on September 9, at any rate.

What could Apple be up to?

Apple has managed to become a massive part of the gaming industry in spite of almost no active participation on their part, all thanks to the rise of mobile and tablet gaming, which has been fueled largely because of the App Store delivery infrastructure that they laid down for their iOS devices. That said, a lot of people have expected a real, aggressive move by Apple to attempt to enter the gaming industry proper for a while now- while the game console business is hostile to newcomers (just ask Microsoft, who, after more than ten years of Xbox, are cumulatively still in loss for that department), gaming itself is a massive, lucrative industry, and it’s not difficult to see why Apple might want in on that.

So far, Apple has done absolutely nothing, but it seems that might be about to change this Friday. Mike Wehner, a well known journalist of Daily Dot, TUAW, and USA Today, took to his Twitter to post the following not so cryptic message:

‘Hey tech/Apple/games fans. Prepare your Twitter b-holes for Friday. It’s going to be a bloodbath,’ before he followed it up with, ‘Mark it on your calendar and you’ll see.’

The tweet has since been deleted- which lends credence to the fact that this writer might have leaked something he wasn’t supposed to- but we managed to get a screencap for you before it vanished into the ether of the internet, which you can see above.

Now this is certainly very interesting- the first impulse might be to expect that Apple is about to make a major announcement, but Apple does not work that way- they don’t make major announcements like this before sending invites out to the press often a month in advance (so this would be out of the blue and incongruous), and they also never make announcements on Friday- they usually prefer the middle of the week like Tuesday or Wednesday, when all eyes are on them.

So what could this possibly be? A popular theory is that this might just be a refresh of the Apple TV, which would make it a proper Apple made, iOS based microconsole, which might just have more success in the market than any Android or PlayStation microconsole has so far. Another theory is that Apple may have, somehow, managed to secure a major exclusive, either for their iOS device, or for Mac. As for what that exclusive might be that might cause a ‘bloodbath,’ I have no idea.

Stay tuned, and we’ll keep you posted anyway.

And why, honestly, it's alright.

So by now, everyone has revealed their hand and the chips are down. If you ask the gamers, Sony won hands-down with their reveal of the PlayStation 4 because Microsoft’s Xbox One was dead on arrival.

It’s not as if the actual console is being rubbished, so much as Microsoft’s direction for it. Instead of games, there was talk of having an all-in-one media solution – which is how the console gets its name – where you can play games and catch up on your movie and TV viewing at the same time.

The implementation and symbiosis of Kinect into the console’s ecosystem is now complete. It now tracks your controller, automatically loading up your saved games while responding to your voice commands. But the question still remains: Where were the games?

When Major Nelson announced that the conference would only be an hour long, I took it as a sign that Microsoft was going to focus more on what’s worked for it so far – that is, Kinect and the technology’s appeal to mainstream consumers. Aaron Greenberg’s statement later about the exclusives being shown at E3 pretty much clinched it. If nothing else, Microsoft had done a repeat of its now universally mocked E3 2010 conference wherein it devoted an entire extra day to showing off the Kinect. Of course, the next day wasn’t much better since Kinect appeared again but that’s a different story.

The point is: Microsoft no longer needs to focus on gaming. What does it have to do to appeal to its core audience? Why, release a new Halo and create some exclusive titles. Maybe get a new Forza game out. And if Remedy Entertainment can somehow impress people down the line with Quantum Break without delaying it for several years, then great.

But getting after the real money that’s in the Tivo and Smart TV market? Now that takes time. And it takes a lot to convince consumers that a device that was formerly best known for bro bashes and whiny Xbox Live players is their best bet for their living room needs.

The presence of appealing to gestures is a way to acclimate more users to the Windows 8 experience, if the appearance of the new Xbox Dashboard wasn’t enough. As such, the entire exercise is an attempt to appeal to the consumers making up smartphones and tablets, and who were responsible for Kinect being such a success in the first place. With everything that’s happening, Microsoft wants to get a leg up on Apple TV and Roku with its next generation console. If it can appeal the hardcore gamers along the way, then great.

It’s not like it takes much to satisfy us. Last I heard, the only positive thing about the conference is that there 15 exclusives planned, 8 of which are new IPs. Because if there’s anything that gets a “hardcore gamer” excited, it’s the words “exclusive” and “new IPs”.

I don’t blame Microsoft for heading in that direction. I do find that the Xbox One’s reveal felt incomplete with all this talk media and very little information about how certain things would work. So now I can’t pick up a game and play at a friend’s house without paying a fee? If my Kinect breaks, then what happens to my play experience? Can I carry on as usual? What if I don’t want to use Kinect at all? What if the gestures and Snap Mode and Instant Switching don’t appeal to me, and I just don’t use them?

Microsoft doesn’t have to focus on gaming anymore. It pretty much stopped along the way with PCs when it realized it couldn’t compete on the same level as real, hardcore developers. Somewhere along the way – with the Wii’s dominance and subsequent success of Kinect, doubtlessly – it realized it can’t really succeed on the consoles unless it offers consumers something they don’t already have for enjoying the things they can’t be entertained without.

And as much as we gamers will bitch and moan about it, the fact remains that it doesn’t take much to satisfy us. Alternately, it doesn’t take much to make us mad either (see how many people forgot about the “always online” rumours?). As long as we’re content to let Microsoft throw us a bone every now and then in the form of Halo or Gears of War or Forza, we’ll be fine.
