With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the biggest open-world survival games that you should definitely try out.

The open-world genre is one of the most popular ones in the medium of games, and we have been seeing plenty of developers blending that with survival elements in new and interesting ways. The last few years have seen many open-world games with survival elements, and here are 20 such games that you should definitely try.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

Developer GSC Game World brought the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series back into the limelight with the recently released Heart of Chornobyl, which undoubtedly represents the peak of the series. It takes what worked in prior entries, and creates something that’s bigger and better in almost every way. It blends a modern gameplay framework with the brutal survival mechanics of past entries, and that culminates in an experience that’s sure to stay with you long after the credits roll.

Gamers have quickly realized that a fun open-world game isn’t just about size and scope but rather how you interact with it. There’s a reason the ‘Ubisoft-ification’ of games has caused many to roll their eyes with an emphatic ‘next!’ when seeing a checklist of towers to clear. Many of us want surprise and depth, not a checklist of repetitive tasks to complete. One of the best ways to engage players with a world is letting them control various aspects of its mechanisms. Thankfully, there’s plenty of great games that achieve a fun and dynamic open-world. Here are 10 open world games that let you control almost everything.

10. Satisfactory

You may not find the prospect of factory-building initially appealing, but Satisfactory makes the process addictive and wildly open-ended. Part of that open-endedness is the resource-rich open world you, as a settler, are tasked with exploring and mining for resources. Unlike a lot of management building games, everything in Satisfactory is accomplished from a first-person perspective, adding an extra ounce of immersion to your production chain empire. While the main route through the game starts off with limited technology tiers, progress grants you access to a vast toolbox to create anything imaginable.

From turning everything to ash to crashing down with incredible force, these dragons made life tough for even the strongest players.

Dragons can be some of the coolest entities in fiction, ranging from noble and righteous to evil and scheming (while also just looking awesome). A wide range of dragons can be found in video games and regardless of their motivations, pretty much all of them are fearsome enemies. Let’s take a look at 10 of the more ferocious dragon bosses, and what they bring to the table.

Crimson Glow Valstrax – Monster Hunter Rise

Valstrax debuted in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and even for Elder Dragons, it was quite unorthodox. Its wings are the main feature – when it’s not spewing Dragon energy or unleashing it in homing projectile attacks, they’re used to stab the player in various ways. But perhaps the most dangerous aspect of Valstrax is when it “takes flight”, shooting off into the sky like a jet and crashing down for massive damage.

So what makes Crimson Glow Valstrax, introduced in Monster Hunter Rise, so much more dangerous? For one, its dragon energy is now completely out of control, making it much more aggressive to the extent that it will ambush players on hunts. Its round-the-world attack remains but now you’ll have to deal with exploding patches of dragon energy (which can cause Dragonblight) when it slams its wings down and energy beams.

Long story short, this is one fight you’ll need to bring your best gear to, and always remember to look up.

We talk about difficulty in video games all the time and while some titles are tough to the point of requiring multiple restarts, others are…different. They’re not content to kill you eventually – no, the act must be done as quickly as possibly, even if the game has just started. Let’s take a look at 15 games that tried to kill you almost instantly (and most likely succeeded).

Bloodborne

Bad stuff is going down in Yharnam, if the werewolf that disemboweled you in the clinic wasn’t a good indicator. One trip to the Hunter’s Dream for some armaments doesn’t help to stem the tide of threats. From the rabid dogs and Huntsman that swarm in packs to the Carrion Crows and Trolls, everything is a threat. Yes, even the innocuous old man in the wheelchair.

Studio Wildcard's ARK: Survival Evolved is also available on Game Pass.

If you want to experience the next game in Dontnod’s Life is Strange series but are still skeptical about purchasing the entire season, then take note. Episode 1 of Life is Strange 2 is now available on Xbox Game Pass, according to its listing on the Microsoft Store. Another new addition to the service is Studio Wildcard’s ARK: Survival Evolved, a large open world survival game with dinosaurs, technology, and bling.

Interestingly, it seems that more Game Pass announcements are inbound. Matt Percy, who is Xbox Live business lead for Gold and Game Pass, teased on Twitter that we could expect to hear more on January 3rd. Considering the sheer volume of big name releases that have arrived on Game Pass over the past month, from Ashen and Below to Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, we’re interested to see what January 2019 holds.

Xbox Game Pass is available for $9.99 per month or $59.99 for six months. The subscription service essentially provides access to a wide library of first and third party titles, with new games added every month. It also provides day one access to first party exclusives, like the upcoming Crackdown 3 and Gears 5.

Dino hunting on the go starting next month.

As previously announced, ARK: Survival Evolved, the popular survival (bet you didn’t see that coming) action video game featuring a whole lot of dinos, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. Today we learned exactly when—in a new trailer, Studio Wildcard confirmed that the game will come out on Switch on November 30.

The new trailer also shows us a lot of footage of the game running on the Switch, and it looks surprisingly great on the console, especially given how infamously poor its optimization is even on far more powerful consoles than Nintendo’s admittedly underpowered tablet. The game will come out on Switch with all the content and features in the other versions.

It will be playable online, or locally, as well as single player, and will be available for $50. That price is steep, but the good news is, you at least get to buy a physical copy for the game, in case spending that much money on a digital title makes you blanche.

You can check out the trailer for the game below. ARK is already available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

These games will let you build almost anything.

Building games are in a genre of their own. We don’t just mean that literally – there’s something about carefully crafting a base, gathering raw materials and resources against all odds to survive. Whether its survival or Battle Royale, some games let you build just about anything to bolster your base and/or city. Let’s take a look at 15 of them here.

Rust

Before people associated “building” and “killing random strangers in a wide-open map” with Fortnite, they were doing these things in Rust. Many of Rust’s structures can be fairly simple, usually ramps, ceilings, doors, gates and so on of different materials. However, these can be combined in different ways to craft absolute fortresses full of storage boxes with code locks, automated turrets, barricades and much more.

Studio Wildcard has their signature survival dinosaur game on everything else under the sun, so according to a new press release, the next platform being targeted for ARK: Survival Evolved is Nintendo’s hybrid megahit for sometime this year.

Being ported by Abstraction Games, it is said that the port is feature and content complete. Abstraction CEO Ralph Egas commented on the development of the port recently, saying that the difference between the Nintendo Switch and the base PS4 and Xbox One really isn’t as big of a gap as most people seem to think. As such, the biggest limitation is cart space and they expect very minor downgrades in draw distance for the Nintendo Switch version.

Being targeted for a Fall 2018 release, ARK: Survival Evolved will bring its prehistoric survival on the go thanks to the Nintendo Switch. Indie titles have been seeing great success on Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo recently revealed the 10 best selling worldwide indie games for the platform.
