Yakuza: Like a Dragon, As Dusk Falls, Poppy Playtime: Chapter, and Wizard with a Gun will also be added to the Game Catalog.

Sony has officially revealed the next wave of Game Catalog titles for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium users, starting with Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2. The acclaimed remake is available on October 21st for subscribers on PS5.

Other notable PS5 titles include Ballistic Moon’s Until Dawn, a less-acclaimed remake based on Supermassive’s 2015 narrative horror, and V Rising, a sandbox action RPG where players control a newly awakened vampire. There’s also Wizard with a Gun, if you’re keen on less serious survival crafting action.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon will also be available for PS5 and PS4 players alongside narrative adventure As Dusk Falls and Poppy Playtime: Chapter 1. Premium subscribers also receive access to classics like Tekken 3, one of the best entries in the series, for both platforms. Strangely enough, Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Soulcalibur 3, also rumored to be added, are missing.

Regardless, stay tuned when these titles go live next week. In the meantime, subscribers of all tiers can experience Alan Wake 2, Goat Simulator 3 and Cocoon.

Premium subscribers will also allegedly receive access to classics such as Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Tekken 3 and Soulcalibur 3.

The spooky season started early for PlayStation Plus subscribers with the addition of Alan Wake 2 to Essential last week. While Silent Hill 2 remake is allegedly next for Extra and Premium subscribers, Dealabs’ billbil-kun has reported another major horror entry joining the line-up: 2024’s Until Dawn.

A remake of Supermassive’s classic, it was released for PS5 and PC in October 2024 to mixed reviews (and the Until Dawn film didn’t do much to bolster interest). You can check out our thoughts here, but alongside low Steam numbers, it reportedly performed worse than Concord on PS5. Developer Ballistic Moon would “effectively” close last March after failing to secure funding (and allegedly pitching another project to Sony).

Of course, there’s apparently even more in store, including As Dusk Falls and V Rising for Extra subscribers. As for PlayStation Classics, available exclusively for Premium subscribers, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Tekken 3 and Soulcalibur 3 will reportedly be made available. Stay tuned for more updates and the official announcement in the meantime.

PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can now try out narrative adventure game As Dusk Falls before buying.

A couple of weeks after its release on the PS4 and PS5, narrative adventure game As Dusk Falls now has a free trial available to subscribers of PlayStation Plus Premium. The trial allows players to check out the first hour of the game, and allows players to carry over their progress into the full game.

The PS4 and PS5 release of As Dusk Falls was originally announced back in December. For context, the game had been out on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S since July 2022. The newer PS5 release of the game also makes use of some of the console’s exclusive features, which were explained by developer INTERIOR/NIGHT back in February.

As Dusk Falls takes place a few years after events that take place in 1998 that end up mixing together the lives and fates of two families. The game largely revolves around the fallout and consequences of the choices that were made during the fateful events during a robbery gone wrong in 1998. It features a branching storyline that can be further explored by players by fulfilling specific requirements.

The game also features multiplayer for up to 8 players, making use of console controllers as well as smartphones through a dedicated app. In this way, players can experience the stories of a bunch of different characters in their own unique ways.

Interactive narrative drama As Dusk Falls will make use of the PS5's DualSense controller features for heightened drama.

Developer INTERIOR/NIGHT has released a new developer diary video for the upcoming PS5 release of narrative title As Dusk Falls, this time around focusing on some of the console-exclusive features that will be present in the game.

Some of the new features coming to As Dusk Falls as part of its PS5 release include the ability to use the DualSense controller’s trackpad as the primary method of interacting with the game and the use of haptic feedback to lean into tense moments in its narrative.

Much like the game’s other versions, the PS5 version will also allow up to 8 players to partake in multiplayer by making use of a smartphone app that connects with the game.

While the PS5 and PS4 versions of As Dusk Falls are set for release on March 7, the game has been out on PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One since July 2022. It is a narrative-focused title that explores the events that unfold in two families after a fateful event in 1998.

Whether it was poor sales or underwhelming critical reviews, these 15 games deserved way more appreciation than they got.

There have been several excellent titles throughout video game history, some ascending to legendary status and being remembered for a long time. However, there are plenty that fall by the wayside despite some acclaim, with the odd player or three telling anyone and everyone to check them out. Let’s look at 15 such underrated titles throughout history and what makes them worth playing.

Sunset Overdrive

Despite launching in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive (eventually arriving for PC), Insomniac Games’ Sunset Overdrive is still a classic that deserves more recognition. Its humor may not be for everyone, but the bombastic style and presentation, over-the-top combat and fluid movement, which would go on to inspire Marvel’s Spider-Man, all combine seamlessly. Coupled with an open-world playground littered with stuff to do and a compelling story, it’s a shame that more people didn’t play it.

Prey

Arkane Austin is dragged for Redfall, rightfully given its quality, but also because of its previous effort, Prey. As a reboot of the Human Head Studios’ FPS, it’s an immersive sim with a unique sci-fi setting and moral consequences from the perspective of one Morgan Yu, stuck on the Talos 1 station. Unfortunately, despite its well-designed environments, nuanced gameplay and frighteningly intelligent Typhon enemies, it failed to really make an impact sales-wise. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the genre’s best.

The Evil Within 2

You have to give credit to Tango Gameworks. Following the reception to The Evil Within, it returned to the drawing board and crafted a sequel superior in almost every way. Better graphics, more memorable sequences and terrifying scares, vastly improved gameplay and a story continuation that made us care more about protagonist Sebastian Castellanos and his family. Of course, as the story goes, it saw underwhelming sales and faded into the background. On the bright side, at least the developer bounced back and saw massive success with Hi-Fi Rush.

Days Gone

Bend Studio’s Days Gone is an interesting case – it sold millions, but many never tried it out until it came to PC and was offered free on PlayStation Plus. Its critical reception also left much to be desired, especially considering the high bar of PlayStation exclusives. Those who gave it a chance found a compelling open-world zombie shooter with interesting activities and an intriguing protagonist (despite some horrendous writing in sections). Fans still lament what could have been following reports of a proposed sequel being canned.

Nex Machina

Nex Machina is the final hurrah to Housemarque’s arcade shoot ’em ups and bullet hell titles (or so we thought at the time). A twin-stick shooter that combined elements from Robotron and Smash TV, even bringing on original designer Eugene Jarvis as a creative consultant, it offered gorgeous voxel graphics and fast-paced, intense action. Critics may have embraced it, but the sales said otherwise, leading to Housemarque famously stating that “Arcade is dead.” Fortunately, it didn’t stray far from its roots when it delivered the acclaimed Returnal for PS5.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

With all the high-profile exclusives on the GameCube, from Metroid Prime to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, it’s a miracle that various third-party titles stood out. Silicon Knights’ Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem sadly wasn’t quite there, despite combining a long-running horror saga with multiple protagonists with an innovative Sanity system that messed with player perception in a fourth-wall-breaking fashion. Even with rave reviews for its story, mechanics and scares, it never received as much attention as the genre’s greats. Hopes for a sequel were buried long ago, but when it comes to compelling horror stories in video games, Eternal Darkness is still one of the greats.

Oxenfree

All these years later, and even with a sequel, the original Oxenfree remains as compelling and unique as ever. The story of Alex, who ventures to Edwards Island with her friends, alternates between teen drama and compelling supernatural mystery with incredibly well-written dialogue. Even better is the dynamic dialogue, allowing one to respond however they wish, leading to different results (and endings). Memorable stories come and go in the games industry, but Oxenfree’s deserves to be highlighted more.

Jusant

In this era of climbing games, where many emphasize the difficulty and frustration that comes from falling down on all that you’ve ever known, DON’T NOD’s Jusant hits differently. Despite its post-environmental disaster world, it offers a relaxing and meditative vibe as you scale a mysterious rock and attempt to piece together the history of its residents. With responsive controls and interesting platforming challenges that never get frustrating, Jusant is a remarkably chilled-out time.

Stories Untold

You probably heard of No Code for their work on the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall, but horror adventure Stories Untold remains their most memorable work. It’s a surreal experience, seemingly starting as a series of standalone episodes before connecting incredibly. With unorthodox mechanics, including the player playing someone playing an old-school PC adventure game, Stories Untold is unlike anything else out there.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Falcom’s Kiseki series has always been considered an RPG series with a lower budget, but it made for it with strong characters and writing. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky exemplified this best, introducing us to a fantasy world with airships and magic (but in a more grounded fashion). As Estelle Bright, players embark on a journey to become a full-fledged bracer, joined by Joshua and encountering all kinds of characters and occurrences along the way. Despite a slow start, the first game offers an amazingly realized world, a solid battle system with challenging fights, and an incredible soundtrack that’s still memorable

Mad Max

Another post-apocalyptic open-world title that didn’t quite land with several critics, Mad Max was still a strong adaptation of the source material. Players scoured the wasteland, engaging in vehicular battles while scavenging for parts, but ventured on foot to interact with various survivors and infiltrate strongholds for some solid beat ’em up action. Despite how monotonous the environments could get, it was still worth checking out for fans.

CrossCode

With its 16-bit style visuals and addictive hack-and-slash combat, CrossCode is already one of the best action RPGs few have ever played. However, it also offers a massive world with dozens of hours of gameplay, a great story that plays with established MMO tropes, and one of the more well-written protagonists out there. Coupled with a fantastic soundtrack, it’s a wonder that CrossCode doesn’t have more players.

Tacoma

Gone Home from Fullbright understandably isn’t for everyone, but Tacoma, a sci-fi title focused on rewinding and reviewing conversations in an abandoned space station, is definitely worth checking out. The conversations in question occur via Augmented Reality, leading to the exploration of different spaces at different times of the recording to piece together what happened. It’s an engrossing mystery and a solid adventure title that deserves more attention.

Vanquish

While everyone talks about Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising and NieR: Automata, PlatinumGames’ Vanquish is nearly forgotten. It’s a shame because despite the corny story and voice acting, it offered a new take on cover-based shooting, with rocket-powered sliding encouraging one to reposition quickly. Slow-mo allowed for more precise shooting while memorable boss fights and scenarios added some style to the proceedings.

As Dusk Falls

Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, and some parts could have been better, but as a narrative title about two families inspired by the likes of Fargo, As Dusk Falls is an intriguing adventure from INTERIOR/NIGHT. Players make decisions at different moments, causing the plot to branch extensively, and every little choice and QTE has an impact. With solid acting and writing, its story is begging for a continuation and an expansion of the unique presentation.

WIth this feature, we run down 15 of the most underrated games on the PS5 that never recieved the love and appreciation they truly deserve.

While Microsoft has been playing second fiddle to Sony for the last couple of years, the technology giant boasts a vast library of games ranging from racers to shooters and much more alongside a healthy number of multiplatform releases. Many of these games have gone on to become all-time classics, but many of these amazing releases have also gone ignored by fans for one reason or another. With this feature, we will be looking at 15 of the most underrated Xbox games of all time.

Halo 3: ODST

The Halo games have continued to be system sellers for Microsoft for generations at this point, but Halo 3: ODST always ends up being one of the more under-appreciated games in the franchise. And that’s a shame really, because ODST had some really interesting ideas that were executed reasonably well – including but not limited to large open environments and a setting that didn’t rely on Master Chief or Cortana. It’s a unique game that has a lot to say, and fans should definitely give it a try.

Quantum Break

Quantum Break was an ambitious project from Remedy Entertainment, and it sought to combine elements of a TV show with a game. Sure, some of its concepts didn’t really stick the landing – but Quantum Break is an extremely fast and frenetic shooter that features some interesting time-based abilities and a story that’s about as weird as one would expect from the developer. It’s easily one of the more underrated Microsoft exclusives, but one worth trying out nevertheless.

Sunset Overdrive

Sunset Overdrive comes from the now Sony-owned Insomniac Games. It’s a post-apocalyptic adventure game where you grind on rails, jump on bouncy surfaces, and use a vast array of weapons to gun down waves upon waves of enemies. It features a colorful open world with likable characters and quality writing, but the game wasn’t really able to make an impact in the end. Sunset Overdrive is emblematic of the developer’s biggest strengths, which makes it a really underrated game that deserves a lot more love and credit than it gets.

Mafia 1

The original Mafia was a game that was well ahead of its time. In a market where every developer was trying to copy Rockstar’s formula of an open world, Mafia provided its own take with a more realistic world that operated on brutal rules and a story that was a complex tale with plenty of loyalties and conspiracies. It was a special game that unfortunately never got the audience it deserved, most likely due to its demanding gameplay – which is honestly a shame.

The Saboteur

Developed by Pandemic Studios, The Saboteur thrusts players into a beautifully realized rendition of 1940s Paris. You play as a racer-turned-rebel who embarks on a quest to prevent evil schemes from happening, and that story remains engaging from start to finish. But what’s more impressive is the set of mechanics that beautifully combines social stealth elements with action gameplay in an open-world setting, and it’s honestly a surprise as to why such a special game went unnoticed by the masses.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is developer Ninja Theory’s take on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, and it tells the story of two people who must work together to ensure each other’s survival. The game uses a simple but fun combat loop for its gameplay, but what makes it special is the interesting scenarios it keeps on creating at every turn – which makes it such an engaging experience.

Vampyr

Vampyr is all about a doctor juggling his personal life at a hospital and his struggles with turning into a bloodthirsty vampire. The combat is all about balancing stamina and dishing out damage to your opponents, and the game does a great job of creating a well-knit set of systems that beautifully interact with one another to create a fully realized world. There are a few rough edges here and there, but it is a game that’s worth trying out.

As Dusk Falls

As Dusk Falls is a narrative adventure that starts out simply with a family embarking on a road trip, but that soon evolves into something greater. The art style here is fantastic, and the story is pretty engaging from start to finish. It’s a simple game that does just enough to keep you entertained for its runtime, and sometimes that’s all you need.

Gears of War Judgment

The Gears of War series has continued to be one of the most valuable first-party games for the Xbox platform, and almost every mainline entry has been showered with great critical and commercial reception. Gears of War Judgment stands out as an exception, not because it suffered from bad reviews – but that not many people actually played it. And this is a shame because this prequel provides a ton of context to the events of later entries – and that information will be highly appreciated by fans of the franchise.

Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct attempted a shot at revival in 2014, which ended up receiving a rather tepid reception from fans. While it wasn’t on par with contemporaries like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, Killer Instinct was certainly a quality first-party game from Microsoft that never really got the love and attention it deserves.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is widely considered to be one of the best games in the long-running series, and a lot of that praise can be attributed to the game’s excellently crafted story. Crimes and Punishments never fails to keep you guessing, and the writing is also quality stuff. The gameplay revolves around carefully assessing clues and deducting solutions to these cases, and that provides a very distinct fantasy of being a great detective.

Gears Tactics

Gears Tactics does a great job of translating the series’ signature third-person shooting to a top-down tactical game without losing the game’s identity in that transition. The resulting product is a game that shouldn’t work but somehow feels like a natural evolution of the franchise. It constantly ramps things up with new kinds of obstacles and more complex levels, and that keeps you engaged for a long time.

Wanted: Dead

Wanted: Dead takes inspiration from multiple action adventure classics like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, and crafts an experience that feels equal parts a glorious homage and a fresh experience. Wanted: Dead features a solid combat loop where you can effortlessly switch between slashing your foes with a sword and gunning them down with weapons – and that foundation of ideas rarely gets stale.

State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition

State of Decay 2 didn’t launch in the best of states, but over the course of multiple major updates – the developers were able to not only fix the game’s technical issues but also realize its potential with new content changes and mechanic overhaul. But for many fans, the boat had already sailed by then – and State of Decay 2 became an underrated game only appreciated by a small group of people. If you are one of those who gave up on the game, give it another try – and you might be surprised.

Metro 2033

The Metro series came into the limelight with Metro: Last Light and recent entries such as Exodus are widely praised for their brand of survival gameplay. As a result, Metro 2033 ends up being a rather underrated game in the series – which is a shame because many of the ideas that we have come to associate so dearly with the series were actually founded in Metro 2033. It’s a really well-made game, and more people should give it a shot.

The best is yet to come for Microsoft's ninth-generation consoles, but there have been plenty of must-play titles since it first launched.

When factoring in all of the exclusives that the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, the Xbox Series X/S feels kind of…barren in comparison. Nevertheless, there have been some standouts and Game Pass has helped provide a platform for several excellent games that would have otherwise gone unplayed. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best Xbox Series X/S titles of all time, to date.

Elden Ring

It’s easy to dismiss Elden Ring as little more than open-world Dark Souls. But it takes the sheer freedom of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and packs it with weapons, Incantations, Sorceries, armor, enemies, mini-bosses, side quests, lore and quirky characters. Elden Ring is a dense experience that goes from one spectacle to the next.

As Dusk Falls is not without merits, but its price is maybe a little too steep for what it is.

Conceptually, As Dusk Falls is quite interesting. Leaving aside the central question about the nature of a video game, As Dusk Falls’ primary focus is the story that it’s trying to tell, and interestingly, it’s one of those rare narrative games where the story really couldn’t have been told in a different medium; As Dusk Falls can only really be done as a video game. Does it make full use of the interactive nature of its medium? It hardly scratches the surface. But the aspect of player choice is what sets As Dusk Falls apart. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Before we get into the thick of it, let’s talk about As Dusk Falls from a surface level.

Developed by Interior Night, As Dusk Falls is a story about two families with their histories converging around a botched robbery in 1998. In the present day, the surviving members of both families have to reconcile with their histories, and maybe figure out where life goes from them, despite all the trauma and hardships they faced in 1998. That’s a purely surface-level look at the story, though.

"Just about every shot is beautifully framed, and clever uses of the camera are able to enhance the story quite a bit."

As Dusk Falls’ most important aspect is the story it’s trying to tell, and the characters it puts you in the shoes of, so let’s start out by talking about the story. As Dusk Falls is trying to tell a rather tense story, told through a series of vignettes that revolve around the 1998 botched robbery. Considering the narrative-heavy nature of the game, there are going to be a few minor spoilers here and there. I’ll largely keep it to things that happen early on in the game, and hopefully, the divergence in the story because of player choice mitigates the impact of these spoilers. Don’t worry, though, I won’t spoil any big moment.

Right from the beginning, As Dusk Falls displays a fair bit of competence in its ability to frame and direct its scenes. Just about every shot is beautifully framed, and clever uses of the camera are able to enhance the story quite a bit. An early example is a tense scene in the motel where, while being held hostage, you have to maintain your composure in front of a policeman while the hostage-takers hold a person at gunpoint. The clever shot composition makes you constantly look for angles from where the bad guys might see you talking to the cop, and this might inform your next decisions.

As Dusk Falls excels largely in its quieter moments. Some of the best scenes in the entire game often involve little more than a couple of characters having simple conversations.

That’s not to say that the story is perfect. Despite focusing on a grounded story about two families, As Dusk Falls has its moments and plot twists that feel like they were added in just for the sake of having some heavy twists. While the quieter moments and one-on-one conversations are great, some of the plot beats feel rather contrived, and there are a fair number of moments where I started questioning the motivations of these otherwise well-defined characters because the choice they made felt quite out of character.

"As Dusk Falls excels largely in its quieter moments. Some of the best scenes in the entire game often involve little more than a couple of characters having simple conversations."

Stylistically, As Dusk Falls has a cool look going for it. Featuring what look like fully-modeled 3D spaces, As Dusk Falls features characters that are completely 2D. In a way, the characters of the game bear a striking resemblance to well-detailed concept art works that video games usually get in early production stages. The look works quite well for As Dusk Falls, and the contrast between the 3D spaces and 2D characters actually looks pretty great.

The down side, however, is that As Dusk Falls’ art style doesn’t really work outside of its quiet, tense moments. Because of the sparse animations for the characters, all sense of good pacing goes out of the window when it’s an action scene. Ultimately, As Dusk Falls is one of those games that looks way better in screenshots than it does in action.

What really sets As Dusk Falls apart from other narrative adventure games is the strength of its acting. Of course, you’re not going to get much in the way of animated facial expressions owing to the art style, but the voice acting, on the other hand, is downright phenomenal. The skill of the voice actors on display is fantastic, and that, more than anything else, carries the heavy weight of As Dusk Falls’ narrative.

When it comes to actually playing As Dusk Falls, however, one thing becomes clear: Interior Nights wants anyone who plays the game to be able to finish it. Allowing for quite a few control options while playing the game, As Dusk Falls can be played with a keyboard, a mouse, a controller, or if you’re playing multiplayer, even a smartphone. Having played through the game with just the mouse, the whole game is playable with one hand.

As for gameplay, As Dusk Falls is an evolution of Telltale’s classic point-and-click formula from games like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us. Interestingly, there aren’t even any sections where you’re allowed to walk around and explore your surroundings. The most you actually get in terms of gameplay is more akin to a point-and-click hidden-object game, with some quick-time events for actions that look like they might actually take some modicum of effort.

"As Dusk Falls’ art style doesn’t really work outside of its quiet, tense moments. Because of the sparse animations for the characters, all sense of good pacing goes out of the window when it’s an action scene. Ultimately, As Dusk Falls is one of those games that looks way better in screenshots than it does in action."

Generally speaking, As Dusk Falls—at least while playing with a mouse—is played with only one hand. There isn’t much in the way of complexity here; you can click on choices, click on dialogue options, click on objects, and during quick-time events, you spin your mouse clockwise or counter-clockwise, you mash the left clicks, and you swipe in certain directions.

It is worth noting that player choice is a pretty big deal in As Dusk Falls. You’re constantly making choices for all the different characters you play, and the choices you make in one bit of the story ends up having tangible effects in another bit. The choices aspect has been done quite well, and there’s even a fair bit of replayability encouraged thanks to the branching paths the story can take. Between its chapters, As Dusk Falls even shows you a flow chart of the choices you made, and how your choices stacked up against other players who were on the same path. Thankfully, the flow chart doesn’t show any spoilers.

Honestly, As Dusk Falls is a pretty tough sell. It’s priced quite higher than the typical indie narrative adventure game, and while the production values are definitely there when it comes to some aspects, other aspects, like some of the action scenes and gameplay, don’t quite manage the job of holding up the game on their shoulders. As Dusk Falls feels like one of those games that ends up being the perfect argument in favor of a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass. It’s going to be difficult to convince people to buy into a game that most would only play through once, especially with the game’s $30 price tag. With Game Pass, however, it becomes an easy recommendation, owing to its interesting narrative, well thought out characters, and phenomenal pacing. I just wish the gameplay involved more than simplistic quick-time events.

Narrative adventure game As Dusk Falls is out now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The game is available through digital Steam, Xbox Marketplace, Xbox Game Pass, and PC Game Pass. Check out the launch trailer below.

Inspired by prestige TV shows, As Dusk Falls tells the story of two families, and how they have to deal with sacrifice. Players take on the roles of people caught in a robbery in 1998 gone wrong in a small town in Arizona, and repercussions spiralling out from there.

While it features multiplayer, As Dusk Falls doesn’t have online matchmaking. The multiplayer mode has players vote on decisions in the game, with highest-voted decisions influencing the story’s outcome. Developer INTERIOR NIGHT has also detailed the accessibility features in As Dusk Falls.
