The P.T.-inspired psychological horror title was first announced in 2022 and follows an individual who can't leave their home.

Psychological horror title Luto, announced in 2022 by Broken Bird Games, is out now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 for $19.99. Developed with Unreal Engine 5 and one of many titles channeling Konami’s P.T., the plot revolves around the player suffering the loss of a loved one and being unable to leave their house.

While dealing with depression, you’ll discover various secrets and maybe even learn a few truths, though they may not be what you want to hear. There is some mild puzzle-solving, but similar to P.T., an entity hounds the player, seemingly preventing them from leaving. Development took longer than expected for Broken Bird Games, which noted every step to be a “challenge, but also a valuable learning experience,” due to effectively starting “from scratch.”

There were some last-minute challenges along the way, including a brief delay to the Xbox Series X/S version because of “certain inaccessible achievements” and a “lower-than-expected frame rate.” Thankfully, said issues were already fixed internally, and following validation, it’s now available on the Xbox Store.

Broken Bird Games' first person narrative driven psychological horror title will be available for PS5, PS4, and PC upon launch.

We’ve been hearing about Luto for a while now, and though Broken Bird Games’ narrative driven first person psychological horror title has taken longer than expected to release, we finally do have a release date for it at long last, courtesy of a new trailer showcased at the recent Future Games Show Summer Showcase- and it’s not terribly far away.

Broken Bird Games and co-publishers Selecta Play and Astrolabe Games have announced that Luto is set to launch a little over a month from now, on July 17. A new trailer offers more glimpses at the game’s story and setup and the unsettling horror it will enable. Players can expect plenty of creepy locations and terrifying sights as they make their way through a ghost story. Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of what it will have in store.

When Luto launches next month, it will be available on PS5, PS4, and PC. There’s no word yet on when (or if) we can expect the game on other platforms. Stay tuned for more updates in the coming days and weeks.

Spikewave Games' sci-fi stealth experience offers intriguing hacking-based gameplay but loses the plot as soon as it begins.

You’re Doctor Thomas Liu, there’s a spherical Genie known as 0z (with a number zero, not an “O”, mind you), and a powerful virus called RED has spread through the operating system MORE in HERE. Don’t ask where it came from – neither Liu nor 0z know. Get out there and fix it while the script continues racing 60 words per minute. The remaining Genies in the facility have been compromised, and you have to use hacks and an E-Blaster and go on to synthesize a serum to counteract RED…

At this point, the story went past in media res and made me believe I missed a significant chunk of the game, but no, this is how Spikewave Games’ Evotinction kicks off. Looking back, a lot of it feels like a blur, and while you grasp the basic gist soon enough, the pacing is breakneck, barely giving the plot time to breathe. Not counting the long camera shots with no cuts, odd close-ups and enough lens flares that serves as little more than superficial “aesthetics.”

"Evotinction has its share of “surprises”, and while I can’t delve into too much, there is a fair bit of metanarrative. Even the loading screens tend to break the fourth wall, "

Still, with admittedly sleek visuals thanks to Unreal Engine 5 and as part of Sony’s China Hero Project, there is some charm to Evotinction’s stealth action, even if the forgettable story, two-dimensional characters, and odd action sequences bring pause.

Let’s go back to the beginning. You’re Doctor Thomas Liu, as the game keeps telling you, and you’re the head of a remote facility called HERE. There are presumably breakthroughs galore, though Thomas often collides with his boss over the ethics of some experiments. Somehow, a virus known as RED spreads through the facility’s operating system MORE, sealing the doors and locking all the humans in their rooms while cranking up the temperature. Your job is to defeat RED while saving as many people as possible. Or so it seems on the surface.

Evotinction has its share of “surprises”, and while I can’t delve into too much, there is a fair bit of metanarrative. Even the loading screens tend to break the fourth wall, speaking to the player as if it’s more than a game. The general direction isn’t too bad, but the pacing and characterization leave much to be desired.

Thomas has some interesting qualities initially. There’s a sense of weariness and trepidation, which is also apparent in the voice logs. However, it never really leads to the player empathizing with his predicament. Past a certain point, it all feels moot in favor of a more player-focused perspective. The shift can feel jarring, even if it’s eventually explained away.

"Getting spotted in certain situations, especially in the early going, is also a recipe for death – sorry, “getting hacked” – due to the limited avenues for escaping or thwarting pursuers."

0z comes across as concise and matter-of-factly but without time for his analysis to breathe. The same goes for everyone else, even Thomas – it feels like they’re doing a first-run read-through of the script with rudimentary amounts of emotion. There isn’t much else to anchor the player to the narrative, causing the gameplay portion to feel almost disconnected from the story. “Almost” is the key – if Evotinction went completely off the rails, it would be something else, in good and bad ways.

As hard as I am on the story-telling, the gameplay does deserve an honorary mention. Evotinction is a stealth game, albeit one with several insta-fail scenarios. Getting spotted in certain situations, especially in the early going, is also a recipe for death – sorry, “getting hacked” – due to the limited avenues for escaping or thwarting pursuers. Nevertheless, it does have a solid stealth system at its core.

Thomas automatically takes cover and peers out naturally from behind. Movement is pretty solid, though crouching in spaces with furniture packed together can get iffy, and the number of objects you can hurdle over is surprisingly limited. What solidifies the gameplay loop is the various tools available to subvert the Genies.

Since they’re drones, you have multiple options, from destroying them with a close-range E-Blaster shot (which graduates to a long-range E-Gun later) to manually shutting them down. The latter requires being directly behind them to facilitate the shutdown and can take longer than pulling the trigger (with the latter using up precious ammo). You can also hack them to remove their movement and vision, making it easier to sneak past or shut them down. I also appreciated how later models would have enhanced hearing, which kept options like turning off their hearing viable.

"I’m impressed that Evotinction keeps introducing new tools to outmaneuver enemies while ensuring the threat remains high (especially as newer Genie types and scenarios are revealed)."

You can also introduce some viruses into the equation, causing linked machines – who will react if their comrades are tampered with – to get hacked simultaneously. Deployable chips also open up, allowing you to create decoys to divert attention or even force-link machines, making them easier to hack. While there’s extensive power at your fingertips, hacking has some drawbacks – you must get close enough to a target, potentially risking detection. If the hacking isn’t complete within a five-second window, the Genies will start tracing your position. Each subsequent hack also reduces the overall “Stealth” meter – once it’s depleted, forget using any hacks.

I’m impressed that Evotinction keeps introducing new tools to outmaneuver enemies while ensuring the threat remains high (especially as newer Genie types and scenarios are revealed). The AI is somewhat forgiving, though it ramps up the detection and variety of kill methods to match your growth. Thankfully, you have a brief window after being detected, allowing you to fire off the E-Gun or shut down the network, stunning all nearby enemies while you escape.

Level design isn’t particularly incredible, but it’s still solid, leveraging the different facilities in HERE for stealth purposes without making them feel too out of place. You don’t have much freedom for exploration, but there’s enough wiggle room in the mid to late-game stealth encounters.

In addition to the regular stealth sections, you also have bosses. The first is somewhat comical because the game is suddenly a third-person shooter of sorts – complete with the strangest dashing animation I’ve seen in UE5 – while the second is more grounded, even if it took some time to figure out that I had to shoot the weak points on its shell.

Aside from the campaign, there’s a Simulation where you can practice different hacks and tools, completing challenges to earn Tokens to upgrade your current repertoire. These start simple, offering various scenarios to learn each method before upping the difficulty. One of the trials seemingly bugged out, preventing me from using the hack in question, but otherwise, it’s a neat little side activity.

Graphics-wise, Evotinction’s environments look good, though some character models can vary in quality. Performance is also solid for the most part, but some scenarios can cause slight dips in performance. The frame rate absolutely nosedives when there are too many particle effects, as seen in the second boss fight, resulting in a messier-than-necessary encounter.

I’ve said my piece about the voice acting, but the sound design and music also stick out. It feels overly quiet at times but not in an intentionally eerie way – more like some sounds are missing. The music isn’t bad, but sometimes it doesn’t match the atmosphere, especially the sci-fi techno.

Evotinction is an overall intriguing effort from Spikewave Games despite the varying quality of its many aspects. While the story and characters are exasperating yet uninteresting, the stealth mechanics are decent enough to encourage forging ahead and seeing what’s next. Though there isn’t much to warrant a return, it’s a capable time waster that could have been more.

Evotinction's director and producer Gu Xingyan speaks with GamingBolt about the upcoming stealth title.

It’s hard to find too many good stealth-based games these days, but even so, for those really interested in the genre, there are some things to look forward to. Spikewave Games’ upcoming title Evotinction looks like one such game. Set in a dystopian cyberpunk world, with its blend of hacking and stealth mechanics, with a particular emphasis on the latter, it’s making some intriguing promises so far, to the point where it’s turned the heads of many genre fans. To learn more about the game and learn what makes it tick, we recently reached out to its developers with a few of our questions. Below, you can read our interview with Evotinction’s director and producer Gu Xingyan.

Evotinction’s near-future dystopian sci-fi setting is looking like one of its most intriguing. What can you tell us about the game’s world, and how important it is to the larger story you’re telling?

Nowadays, a small group of innovators can come up with a sudden technological leap that could totally revolutionize our lives. So, we imagined what a group of top scientists could do to our world if they put their minds to it, especially if their well-intentioned work goes wrong. That’s the key concept in Evotinction: what would happen if a civilization-defining event came out of a technology think tank. Exactly how this setting will affect the gameplay and story, you’ll have to discover by playing the game!

Evotinction’s emphasis on stealth gameplay has turned quite a few heads, particularly given how it’s blending that with hacking mechanics. Can you talk to us more about that blend and what form that takes where core gameplay mechanics are concerned?

The mix of stealth and hacking is something the core team at Spikewave Games wanted to do from day one because it reflects our own experience and preferences. Most of us are hardcore stealth game fans, and we wanted to see what hacking would look like in that context. As an indie developer, we also want to create something different, so we decided to bring a more “tactical” aspect to third-person stealth. The various hacking aspects of the game really bring out that tactical side of things, where you have to make immediate decisions based on your environment, your goals, and your available tools.

With its mixture of hacking and stealth, how expansive will Evotinction be in how many options it offers to players for how to tackle any given situation?

We’ve designed the levels with different playstyles in mind. You can get by by using good positioning and movement, for instance, or you can take down enemies using different abilities the game has provided. For more advanced players, for instance speedrunners, we’ve established optimal paths that require precise timing and creative thinking. For tactical players, you can plan out a huge chain reaction that can disable enemies all at once with a single button press, like pushing the first piece of a series of dominos and watching them fall.

Fans of the stealth games have frequently lamented the relative lack of activity in the genre in recent years. Is that something that’s been on your mind as you’re developing Evotinction?

Yes, for sure! Like I said, we’re big stealth game fans, and we want more entries in the genre. We’ve also received a lot of feedback from stealth fans that allow us to push the stealth side of the game even more. We’re hoping stealth fans will find some big surprises and innovations in the genre in Evotinction.

What can you tell us about the different types of enemies players will encounter in the game? How much variety can be expected on that front?

One central type of NPC you encounter are “genies,” which are a spherical drone in widespread use through the facility. You even start the game with a genie ally called 0z. They’re kind of the “smartphone” of the future, a personal assistant AI. Since things went wrong in the facility, you’ll encounter those both as allies and enemies a lot. There are also other types of machine enemies that make for more varied gameplay: one can buff other units; one is more like a tank that can cause massive damage and is difficult to kill; one is a sniper with a narrow field of view but long range. There are others as well, each with their special impact on players’ tactical choices.

How large and varied of an arsenal of tools and gadgets will players have in Evotinction?

We’ve designed a lot of tools and abilities for the player to choose how they want to approach stealth. You can hack different parts of your enemy, for instance. Or you can use a multifunction chip to gain various advantages. There are advanced skills like viruses that you can spread among your enemies, or proxies that extend your connection range and can fool enemies when they detect an intrusion attempt. You can also use workstations to scout ahead and plan the best approach. Finally, there are even some abilities that are unique to New Game+.

What can you tell us about the game’s progression mechanics?

You get some data every time you perform a hack or finish a level. This data can be used at a workstation in a safehouse to train new hacking abilities. Some abilities require key data that you get by performing specific challenges.

Roughly how long will an average playthrough of Evotinction be?

For an average player, the first playthrough should take roughly 8 hours. Then there are additional challenge levels and New Game+ that can be unlocked. A completist playthrough should take around 30+ hours.

Do you have plans to eventually bring the game to Xbox and Switch?

Currently, we’re only focusing on PlayStation and PC.

The PS5 features an incredibly fast SSD with 5.5GB/s raw. This is faster than anything that is available out there. How can developers take advantage of this?

Yes, it’s awesome. It means we can reduce our loading times to seconds. It’s great for a stealth game, because there’s barely any downtime at all when a player wants to retry a challenge or start a new game.

What frame rate and resolution does the game target on PS5

We’re targeting dynamic resolution and 60 fps for PS5. We also plan to support some advanced rendering features like ray-tracing on PS5 if someone wants to choose better graphics.

Director and producer Gu Xingyan speaks with GamingBolt about the technical aspects of the upcoming stealth title.

Evotinction’s sci-fi setting, its emphasis on stealth, and its hacking mechanics have painted a promising picture in all that we’ve seen of the game so far, and with the game firmly on more than a few radars, there’s no shortage of questions about what else it will bring to the table. We recently had the chance to interview its developers, where we posed some of those questions, one of which pertained to the game’s technical aspects, especially with it being a cross-gen release.

When asked about Evotinction’s resolution and performance targets on the PS5, director and producer Gu Xingyan told GamingBolt that the game will target a dynamic resolution on the console alongside 60 FPS gameplay, though specifics on the former are currently unknown. Meanwhile, the game will also feature support for “some advanced rendering features like ray tracing” on the console for those who want to “choose better graphics.”

We also asked Xinyang about the PS5’s SSD, and how it has helped with Evotinction’s development, and he confirmed in response that thanks to the console’s SSD, the game’s load times are seconds-long at most, which is useful for a stealth game in particular.

“Yes, it’s awesome,” he said about the PS5’s SSD. “It means we can reduce our loading times to seconds. It’s great for a stealth game, because there’s barely any downtime at all when a player wants to retry a challenge or start a new game.”

Evotinction is set to launch sometime in Spring 2023 for PS5, PS4, and PC. Our full interview with the developer will be live soon, so stay tuned for that.

Bilibili's dieselpunk Metroidvania game launched for PlayStation and PC last year, and will be coming to Nintendo Switch in July.

Developer TiGames dieselpunk Metroidvania game F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch might not have been the biggest release of 2021, but it was definitely one of the sleeper hits of the year. Launching for PlayStation in September last year and then on PC not long afterward, the game has drawn praise for its setting, level design, and aesthetic from most who’ve played it, and soon, it’ll be opening the gates for what its developers will be hoping will be a larger playerbase.

It’s been confirmed that F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch is headed to the Nintendo Switch, a platform that seems particularly well-suited for the kind of game it is. Earlier this year, the game received a classification rating for Nintendo’s platform in Taiwan, so this doesn’t exactly come as a huge surprise.

Publisher Bilbili will be assisted by Astrolabe Games in publishing the game on Switch. It will launch for the system on July 12, with pre-orders being live now, and costing 10% less until the game launches.

In our review of F.I.S.T., we awarded it a score of 7/10, saying, “Aside from rigid combat and some visual hiccups, F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch delivers a unique world with an intriguing narrative and tight traversal.” You can read our full review through here.

F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch is currently available on PS5, PS4, and PC. Shortly after the game’s launch last year, its developers confirmed that work on new content was underway.
