The titles and their DLC will be unavailable on digital storefronts from that date, while online services will end on November 7th.

Electronic Arts has announced that three Battlefield titles will be delisted on July 31st for Xbox 360 and PS3. Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline won’t be available on digital storefronts for the same, which also applies to their DLC. Online services for those platforms will also end on November 7th.

Of course, if you own any of these games, the single-player campaigns remain playable. Furthermore, each title will remain available for other platforms. Those still enjoying Battlefield 3 on PC or Battlefield 4 and Hardline on Xbox One, PS4, or PC can continue to do so without any issues.

The announcement comes a few months after Electronic Arts confirmed no further seasons for Battlefield 2042. The next title in the series has yet to be officially revealed. However, it has the largest team in the franchise’s history working on it, including DICE, Motive Studios, Ripple Effect Studios and Criterion Games. EA CEO Andrew Wilson described it as a “tremendous live service”, though details on its setting and mechanics remain unknown. Stay tuned for further updates.

We take a look at the history of Battlefield and try to figure out what is going on with this promising franchise.

The games industry is a turbulent one, and the ever-changing interests of fans and popular trends mean that developers have to constantly keep shifting gears to stand a chance at survival in this industry. We have seen many franchises abruptly fall from their former glory for this very reason, and one such franchise that has recently fallen into this bracket is DICE’s Battlefield. What was once a flourishing first-person shooter with plenty of spectacle and fandom has now been reduced to a shadow of its former self, and most would agree that the last couple of entries have failed to hit the mark in some way or another. To that end, we can’t help but ask the question – what the hell happened to Battlefield?

As fans of the franchise would know, Battlefield started off on a very strong foot. Battlefield 1942 was released in 2002 and was an instant hit on both a critical and commercial scale. At the time, DICE was able to distinguish its military shooter offerings from the competition by focusing on a sense of scale and team-based gameplay. Where other first-person shooters restricted themselves to smaller-scale maps and game modes focused on individual performances, Battlefield 1942 introduced its signature Conquest mode which emphasized teamwork and strategy in large-scale maps. In addition to this, Battlefield also added classes into the mix – and depending on the chosen role, players would have to fulfill their responsibilities and act accordingly during the game.

Fun fact: DICE originally proposed Battlefield 1942 as a GameCube exclusive, but in the absence of proper online functionality on the console – the game was then built for the PC.

DICE would then go on to continually succeed with each passing entry in the franchise. Future installments like Battlefield 2: Modern Warfare also provided a much-needed change of scenery to a modern landscape, but the developer also paid due attention to polishing its signature large-scale gameplay while also introducing new modes into the mix. The series’ upward trajectory continued with Battlefield: Bad Company, which added set-pieces and a likable cast of characters in the single-player department which helped widen the target demographic for the franchise.

All of this set the perfect stage for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, the former becoming the biggest hit in the franchise’s history up until that point (and arguably to date). It sported great single-player campaigns and adrenaline-pumping multiplayer with a wide variety of destructible maps and environments. This was also the time when EA’s own IPs were struggling to find their place in the rapidly changing shooter landscape, which eventually led to the closure of Danger Close games and by extension, the final nail in the coffin for that franchise.

But EA’s premium shooter had a tough future ahead of itself. While Battlefield 4 would go on to receive great critical and commercial acclaim, fans were not impressed by the single-player campaign and the game wasn’t technically stable with bugs and glitches galore. Post-launch patches and DLC did eventually turn the game’s fate around, but the franchise’s reputation had already taken a blow. It also didn’t help that Battlefield: Hardline didn’t get well with a decent chunk of the fanbase, despite featuring some interesting spins to this tried and tested formula.

The next entry in the series, Battlefield 1 then released in 2016 and shifted gears to a different setting. Battlefield 1 felt like a much-needed breath of fresh air amidst the barrage of modern shooters on the market, and it also helped that DICE crafted a well-designed multiplayer experience complete with iconic vehicles and weapons of the era. While the single-player campaigns were short, these self-contained War Stories were quality stuff regardless. Battlefield had once again risen from the ashes, but that victory was short-lived.

Battlefield 5 was released shortly after in 2018 and was subject to substantial criticisms from fans on account of its derivative gameplay and lack of meaningful content upon launch. Again, post-launch updates did manage to reinvigorate some interest in the franchise, but the general consensus surrounding the game was one of wasted potential and that’s something most people are likely to agree with.

And this brings us to Battlefield 2042, the franchise’s biggest blunder to date. The game was highly anticipated by fans and was also the subject of a short delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But when the game was released, it was once again criticized on account of its forgettable multiplayer modes, balance issues, and inconsistent matchmaking alongside a general lack of polish with the experience. Since the game’s launch last year, EA has continually tried to recoup player numbers with post-launch updates, but it has repeatedly failed and the future of Battlefield 2042 looks really bleak at the moment.

So, when went wrong? We can see that modern shooters became all the rage during the Xbox 360 and the PS3 era which is when Battlefield was at its peak. Fan interest slowly disintegrated in the subgenre as time went by, and the lack of any real gameplay innovation didn’t do the game any favors. While Battlefield 1 was able to recoup some interest within the series, the tendency to make iterative upgrades over substantial changes put the franchise back in the slumps once again. Battlefield 2042 was released as an underwhelming and unfinished package during this crucial time, all of which have dealt a significant blow to the franchise’s reputation.

But I think that EA knows that maybe Battlefield has outstayed its welcome. Multiplatform publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision know that any franchise has a limited lifespan – and they know that the best way to make the most out of it is to keep churning out games until it’s no longer profitable – and then move on to the next best thing. Franchises like Guitar Hero, Dead Space (although it’s now coming back in the form of a remake), and so many others have died similar deaths at the hands of these publishers.

That said, a counterpoint to this argument could be that EA is still working on turning Battlefield 2042‘s fates around for good with plenty of post-launch updates, so it’s not giving up on the franchise just yet. But that could also just be the last of EA’s attempts at salvaging some life from this game, and judging by the current market scenario and the recent moves made by Battlefield’s competitors – it seems that the best course of action is to diverge the franchise into a premium and a free-to-play segment; just like how other shooters have done with its offerings.

Spending upwards of $70 on a middling experience like Battlefield 2042 doesn’t make a lot of sense when games like Fortnite are offering mostly similar experiences without any price of admission. What EA eventually ends up doing with the Battlefield franchise remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – that some big changes are going to have to be done in order for the franchise to have a future.

An allegedly leaker says to expect a return to the past.

It seems as if Battlefield 5 has finally closed the book on its final chapter, and the time is now to be looking to the future. While we know a new Battlefield is in the works, we don’t know a lot about it outside current rumors that it will be a return to a modern day setting. But we also got a new leak today that seems to also indicate EA and DICE are also looking to go to the series past as well.

YouTuber Daqarie posted a new video where he stated that he had heard that a remaster of Battlefield 3 is being planned. He said it will release alongside a new Battlefield project, comparing it to how the remaster of the first Modern Warfare was packaged with Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. It’s unclear if that game being referred to is the inevitable Battlefield 6 or another side project. If you are wondering why this leaker deserves highlight, apparently he had very accurate leaks for both Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5.

He says the game will be launching alongside this other project for next generation consoles, though it’s not clarified if it will also be for current gen hardware as well. Though Daqarie seemingly has a good track record, this is still going in the rumor bin obviously. Next week we’ll see EA Play Live 2020, so it’s possible we’ll see the remaster and this other project there depending on how close they are to release.

It’s good for us that EA has gone back on its assertion of not having Steam-like sales on Origin because they would devalue its games and IP. It’s good because this year’s year end sale on Origin has sole truly great deals- and I mean great from any perspective.

If you head over to Origin right now, you can find some of EA’s biggest games of the last few years for obscenely cheap prices- Battlefield 3 is just 99¢, Titanfall is $10, last year’s SimCity is $10, Battlefield 4 is $15, and the just released (and awesome!) Dragon Age Inquisition gets a hefty discount as well, now being sold for just $40, or 33% down.

This isn’t even the end of it- you can check out more deals on the official sale page on Origin, and see if you find something you’ll like. Although, really, considering the sheer wealth of the games on offer, my bet is that there will definitely be something you end up buying.

'Don't throw money at promises that haven't been proven.'

So, the Battlefield franchise has a bit of a track record by this point of broken promises. Battlefield 3’s launch was extremely messy, and then, incredibly, DICE somehow one upped that with Battlefield 4, which was an absolute, monumental disaster of epic proportions, causing untold damage to the brand and to the developer’s perception, and also to cause gamers to just simply lose trust in the franchise in general- something that was reflected in the muted reception that the next game in the franchise, Battlefield Hardline, got at its unveil.

Well, you’re all not the only ones. Even DICE’s ex designer Tim Kjell has spoken out, saying that buying Battlefield Hardline at launch would be a pretty bad idea.

“I would actually recommend people [not buy] Hardline [at launch] as well – it’s just a much better way to not throw money at promises that have yet to be proven. If the game however is really stable and great on launch, go buy it with a feeling of satisfaction of a great buy. That’s exactly what I’m gonna do at least,” he said.

You can check out everything he has to say about the development of Battlefield games, and why they’ve grown into such a mess, in his Reddit AMA.

Just when we thought the controversies related to Battlefield 4 were ending, and we were getting ready to move on to Battlefield Hardline, and an entire new set of controversies, a Battlefield 3 (yes, you read that right) controversy, a very old one, has reared its head. You see, way back when this game was first released, people alleged that they had been incorrectly banned from playing the game online (so basically the only worthwhile part of the package) by EA’s Anti Cheat software. Today, EA admitted to incorrectly banning Battlefield 3 players.

“We are investigating an issue of Punkbuster bans that were incorrectly applied to some of our players,” their statement read. “Please understand that our game advisors are not able to access or overturn Punkbuster bans, but we’re working with our partners at Even Balance to get this resolved as quickly as possible.”

Gosh EA, with so much goodwill accumulated around the Battlefield brand, I am sure Battlefield Hardline will do great.

Pick up the game now and keep it forever.

After Visceral Games’ Battlefield: Hardline was leaked and DICE reaffirmed its support for Battlefield 4, it’s now Battlefield 3 which is in the news. The first person shooter – which helped kickstart the series’ transition into a more modern multiplayer era – is available for free on Origin. This is part of EA’s “On the House” deal which allows for one free game every month on Origin. Head here to pick up Battlefield 3 completely for free.

The offer is valid till June 3rd but you’ll be able to keep it permanently if you download now. Though it doesn’t have Levolution or any of those other fancy new Frostbite 3 tricks, Battlefield 3 still boasts a very solid multiplayer mode – highlighted by Conquest – and a fairly good single-player campaign. At the very least, the campaign is superior to Battlefield 4’s nonsense.

Meanwhile, Visceral is gearing up to showcase more Battlefield: Hardline at E3 2014. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know below.

Here's what Battlefield's salvation should be like.

Battlefield hasn’t ever been considered as just another game in the long line of first person shooter games. The game had established itself as a tactical shooter that demanded that players put in an effort and team work. Gradually, that quotient only became better and it had a whole lot of fan following almost hinging on the edge of being called a cult. More than a decade after the first game in the aptly named series came, out, we were given another iteration of the game, namely Battlefield 4, a successor to its critically acclaimed and almost ubiquitously loved forerunner, Battlefield 3. Battlefield 4 had everyone anticipating it to be the next big thing in this great series of games. On the contrary, EA DICE had something else on their minds. The result? Botch-itField 4.

Of course after establishing such a good name, it was rather short sighted on the developer’s part to make the game as it is. Most of the problems that the game had, have been fixed, but it really took away a lot of loyal fans from the game. That’s not to say that there aren’t any problems unresolved with the game. There still are tonnes. With the developers aiming to release Battlefield 5 in the coming year (or slightly before if rumours be believed), coming up with something the like of BF 4 would destroy the series utterly. There’s a lot that we would like to see changed in Battlefield 5. Here’s 15 of them.

15. Better Campaign

EA Studio General Manager Patrick Soderlund himself has said that ‘storytelling does not come naturally to Swedes’. Yes, we have come to realise that quite some time back, thank you. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll consistently come up with absolutely appalling story line! You have had ample time to hire a good story writer and make an awesome game, DICE.

Or maybe they just plan to attach an obligatory storyline to their multiplayer game just to make it more appealing. And failing at that horrendously. Something that Titanfall did. The reason that CoD has a fan following that it does is mostly because of the story tangent that the game’s have followed in the series. Well, not lately of course but at least TILL Modern Warfare, CoD game’s had a mind boggling story line. We’re not saying that you cook up a similar recipe, just make it more engaging; something that players can associate with and remember fondly. There’s still time to improve on BF 5.

Battlefield 3 + 4 Battlelog targeted.

A new update has went live for the Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 Battlelogs. Fixing numerous issues, and specifically targeting major glitches gamers have pointed out in loadout and in-game chat.

Now, in Loadout, players will have the option of selecting a new “apply to all” feature, which will affect all weapons including knives, grenades, and pistols, as well as vehicle weapons and paint colors. Additionally, glitches concerning the inability to see active slots on other players, stat bars not updating after a weapons switch, and resetting paint selections were also targeted in the update.

Not only that, but a number of Battlefield 3-specific issues have been targeted, which is rare given that Battlefield 4 has just released and Battlefield 3 is quickly being rendered irrelevant. Most companies would focus on only improving their newest game. It’s nice to see that DICE understands the user base of Battlefield 3 is still relatively prevalent, and rather than forcing them to save up for Battlefield 4, is attempting to make Battlefield 3 better for them. Given EA’s recent history this is a fairly uncharacteristic move. Let’s hope we see more of this from them.

A new method has been implemented which, predictably, has come under fire by fans.

If you’re wondering when DICE is going to allow you to meet your squad-mates in a private lobby and ready for deployment in Battlefield 4, then you’re going to have to keep waiting. The developer has responded to a fan query about the same and confirmed that pre-match squad creation won’t be coming to Battlefield 4.

“We have a new feature in Battlefield where a new squad is created when a friend joins your game. You can toggle this option on or off by going into the options menu. We’re not offering the old squad join feature because we didn’t feel that the feature in Battlefield 3 was on par with the quality that we wanted to offer our players. We have no plans to add it in the future.”

Fans are criticizing the approach though, saying that it’s not working out that well. What are your thoughts on the same? Let us know below.
