David Jaffe is known as the creator of Sony’s Twisted Metal and God of War series (as well as the creative director and co-writer for some entries in those franchises), but he’s been on the quiet side over the last few years after his last game, Drawn to Death, didn’t do too well, and his studio closed as a result last year. He’s mostly been about Twitter feuds since then, but today he hinted that he’s working on something again- and it sounds pretty interesting.

Via his Twitter, as you can see below, Jaffe said he’s writing/designing a new game that he’s not shown to anyone. He says it is a single-player horror game and apparently is attempting something new with “in-game storytelling.” His comments are vague, but he says he’s in love with it, so whatever it is, it is something he seems pretty into.

As you can also see, though, he also says he’s shown this concept to literally no one, including a publisher, meaning there’s no funding or actual framework as of now. So whatever this is, it’ll probably be a long ways off before we see anything about it- if we do. Still, Jaffe has some fascinating franchises under his belt, so hopefully whatever this turns into will follow suit.

At the very least, he seems to suggest that he is done with AAA game development.

On the heels of Cliff Bleszinski announcing that he will probably not make any other game ever again, we have another outspoken developer and creator express doubt that he will ever get back to creating new video games again. David Jaffe, the man you may best know for creating Twisted Metal and God of War, said to Colin Moriarty during an episode of “Colin’s Last Stand Fireside Chats” that for now, he is done with game development, after his studio closed down earlier this year following Drawn to Death’s failure

“As for whether I’ll make another game or not, I don’t know,” said Jaffe. “I don’t have any plans right now, and I don’t really have any ambition to right now. I think if I were to make another game it would be harder to imagine doing it with the kind of stuff I’ve done in the past. If you look at what Sony is doing right now, it’s amazing, I’m obsessed with Spider-Man right now …. but what they make these days is so different with the kind of stuff I’m vibing with right now.”

Jaffe did note later on that he might look into making smaller, non-AAA games in the future that are similar to the kind of retro fare he likes, instead of the kind of stuff that Sony is pushing for with its titles these days, but it sounds like as of right now, he is pretty done with the idea of getting back into development.

In the end, it’s up to him to decide whether or not he wants to retire; God of War seems to be in safe hands with Cory Barlog right now, and as Jaffe himself notes, he’s not keen on how AAA game development is proceeding. If he does decide to come back, hopefully it can be with something as genre defining as the original God of War was back in its day.

David Jaffe hasn’t had the best of luck ever since he launched God of War back in 2005. The loud spoken and brash auteur then went on to make Twisted Metal on the PS3, but that didn’t end up being half as well received as some of the older entries in the franchise. He went on to make Drawn to Death on the PS4, but that one ended up getting received pretty poorly.

Now, his new studio, Bartlet Jones, is closing down; Jaffe announced the closure on his Twitter account today. Apparently, the studio had been prototyping an Iron Man game for the PlayStation VR, though it had not yet been pitched. Sadly, we will never get to see what that may have been like.

What Jaffe does next is anyone’s guess. But he’s a talented person with some good ideas; I can only hope he ends up striking gold with his next one again.

Any So Cal gamers interested in owning some gaming history? Sadly we are shutting down our Bartlet Jones offices and there's some great props that we're trying to unload to folks who are into such things.
Jaffe announces the cancelation of his next, unannounced game.

David Jaffe is an eccentric genius, but he is a genius nonetheless- his credits include Twisted Metal, as well as the original God of War. So you always want to keep an eye on what he might be working on next- however, whatever it was that he was working on seems to have been canceled, in turn leading to layoffs at his studio, The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency.

Jaffe confirmed both, the cancelation of the unannounced project and the layoffs, on his Twitter, stating that more news would come, but that he wanted people to learn about this from him rather than from unsubstantiated reports or leaks. As for what the game itself was, we don’t know- and now, we might not ever.

Jaffe’s previous game was the multiplayer shooter Drawn to Death, which launched on PS Plus last year to a tepid response, and ended up flailing and fading away.

Wanted y'all2hear it from me before anyone else:we've had a project canceled and have been forced2lay off the vast majority of the Bartlet Jones staff gaming division.
Drawn to Death is out, and while the final game hasn’t lived up to its fullest potential, David Jaffe’s take on the multiplayer hero shooter/arena shooter remains a fun game to check out- especially for the price of absolutely free, which is what you can get it for if you are subscribed to PlayStation Plus.

If you are interested in jumping in, the series of trailers for it that showcase the characters you can play as may be helpful to you in terms of you picking a character for yourself. Take this newest trailer, for instance- it introduces Ninjaw, a half shark/half scantily clad human female- hey, Drawn to Death is supposed to take place in the doodles drawn by a teenage boy, after all. This is just the kind of thing that he would come up with.

You can check out the trailer for yourself below. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information on the game.

David Jaffe sounds off on the publisher-developer dynamic.

David Jaffe, the creator of God of War and Twisted Metal, is a blunt and outspoken man. He doesn’t censor himself, and he says exactly what he means. Which is what he did at a recent panel he was at with GamesBeat, GameSpot, and Scopely, where he discussed the publisher and developer relationship and, in a topic particularly close to his heart, marketing a game.

“[The publisher and developer dynamic is] kind of like going out on a date with someone you’ve just met,” Jaffe said, discussing the first pitch a developer makes to a publisher- ultimately, Jaffe said, it comes down to being genuine (on both ends) as well as some level of mutual respect.

“For me, it’s always been about making the customer happy,” Jaffe said, noting that the publisher is technically the first customer you have to sell your game to, and so you must sometimes go out of your way to please them.

Jaffe also discussed the tendency a lot of developers have to blame publishers for their games’ failings, especially near the end of development, bringing up, for instance, an issue like marketing.

“All the marketing in the world isn’t going to help a game that doesn’t have a commercial hook,” Jaffe said. He talked about his own PS3 exclusive Twisted Metal, which saw less marketing than something like Uncharted or Killzone. He noted that while it can be frustrating for a developer working on a title with less market appeal, they need to “just f***ing deal with it.”

Which, I guess, is true in a sense- after all, the publisher made the game possible in the first place.

Sweet Tooth would be at home in Drawn to Death, according to Jaffe.

Designer David Jaffe is perhaps one of the more outspoken figures in the gaming industry and his next title, the PS4-exclusive arena shooter Drawn to Death, will feature a bloody and blase atmosphere that goes against what you normally see in shooters these days.

Jaffe expressed his views on free to play in an interview with PS Gamer (he despises a “Pay to Win” scenario). He also talked about the current state of other shooters and the concept of kill-streaks.

“Even once you have bought the game, you are leveling up to earn weapons which is insane to me. It’s like we can both own the same game but you are a higher level than me so you have access to more gear. That’s not skill base. That’s sh***y. You have just been playing longer. I don’t even like kill streaks. I f**king hate kill streaks because it breaks the skill. ‘So let me get this straight. You killed a bunch of people and we are going to give you even more of an ability to kill a bunch of people’. What the f**k is that?”

Jaffe was also asked which PlayStation characters he’d like to see in Drawn to Death. “It would be hard not to see Sweet Tooth being at home in this world. Bloodborne would be great but seeing as though you can make your own characters, there hasn’t yet emerged a Bloodborne mascot but the tone of that fits [Drawn to Death].

“This is a game where the dregs of society have gathered together to shoot the sh*t outta one another so the Naughty Dog characters would feel too noble. I wish Ed Boon would let us put Scorpion in this game.”

Drawn to Death will be out this year for PS4. Thoughts on Jaffe’s views? Let us know below.

There was a huge amount of hype surrounding the PlayStation Experience event that was hosted last year in Las Vegas. The event itself was a huge success and saw PlayStation fans come from all corners of the globe to celebrate together. Unveiled at the event was the new title coming from the well known video game creator David Jaffe.

Speaking to an enquiring gamer over Twitter, Jaffe said, “We are in full blown production- I THINK all is going nicely! Hope Players agree!!” So while saying “I THINK” everything is going nicely doesn’t instill a great deal of hope or faith in the project.”

Jaffe was also asked if the game was going to be a MOBA, to which he jokingly responded “how in the world- if you don’t mind me asking is DRAWNTODEATH anything like a MOBA” saying that 3D space combat doesn’t equate to a game being a MOBA.

Just an observation, but he didn’t say the game isn’t a MOBA.

And it looks...huh.

Infamous game designer David Jaffe returned to the spotlight at the PlayStation Experience to announce Drawn to Death, his newest project to release on the PlayStation 4. The game features a “high school kid doodling in his notebook, wasting time” graphical motif which looks odder than it sounds. Check it out above.

Essentially, Drawn to Death is a multiplayer, third person shooter which features a variety of characters with differing abilities, strengths and weaknesses. It should be noted that there will be other characters and worlds “as fast as the kid can draw ’em”. So it seems that the development team will support the game with significant post-launch content.

We’ll reserve judgment on Drawn to Death since it (a) is still only in the pre-alpha stage, and (b) has a rather interesting art style. However with so much competition in 2015 with Overwatch, Battleborn, BattleCry and many other multiplayer shooters, will it be able to stand out? We’ll find out in the coming months.

That was, odd. For lack of a better word.

The PlayStation Experience is on its way, and the hype for the Sony exclusive event is growing and growing. Set to take place in Las Vegas, the event will play host to all manner of Sony related content, be it publisher and developer talks and exclusive hands on time with upcoming games.

In their newest teaser for the event, game developer David Jaffe makes an appearance. Covered in and eating…something, he sports a manic look and spouts gibberish at the camera. People took the undeniably weird teaser as a hint at his new game which they assumed to be horror orientated. Jaffe then took to Twitter to clarify that his next game isn’t in fact a horror title and that he would love to do one, though he would hate to go up against PT, also known as Silent Hills.

He said, “Those expecting a horror game from us (much as we’d love to make one 1 day) will be disappointed. Plus I’d hate 2 go against the amazing PT!”

What do you think of this then? What’s Jaffe up to?
