Devil May Cry 3 is, in many ways, the most important game in the storied action franchise. It was on the verge of being the final game, which you can read more details about through here, and is generally held up as one of the best in the series even still. It’s Special Edition release is here for the Nintendo Switch now, the first time it’s ever been on a Nintendo console, and we get a launch trailer to celebrate.

The trailer is a brief affair at only about 30 seconds, but for a game like Devil May Cry 3, that’s about all you need. You get a look at the stylish action, as well as the new features for the port such as co-op Bloody Palace and weapon switching. Check it out below.

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition is available now for Nintendo Switch. The first two games were released earlier on the system. You can also find it and the previous two titles in the Devil May Cry HD Collection release on other major platforms.

Producer Matt Walker reveals what was riding on the third game's success.

While Devil May Cry 3 didn’t create the iconic action series, in a lot of ways it’s probably the most important entry. After the first game basically invented the genre often called ‘character action,’ it was followed by a stunningly bad sequel, Devil May Cry 2. Many probably considered the series dead after that (yes, it’s that bad), but the third game raised the bar and helped pull the franchise back up. Without it, I imagine the series would be among the many in Capcom’s IP graveyard. And if you doubt it’s that big of a deal, well, the whole development team almost quit over it.

In an interview with Matt Walker at USGamer, he discussed the upcoming port of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition to the Switch. Here he revealed that the original development team realized this was basically the franchise’s last shot, and they would do anything and everything to follow Director Hideaki Itsuno’s vision in revitalizing the series. And if they couldn’t, they would be gone.

“I think the coolest thing about the development of Devil May Cry 3 is that the team approached it with a go-for-broke attitude, and made it completely according to Itsuno-san’s tastes. Itsuno-san wanted to create the best game he could on his own terms—the action, the characters, the story—so they were all created with Itsuno-san’s sensibilities. The whole team decided that if they couldn’t make DMC 3 a huge success, they would all quit. Luckily, their work seems to have paid off.”

Devil May Cry 3 originally released on PlayStation 2 with a Special Edition release following that had some addition content and game fixes. That version has since been repackaged multiple times in the HD Collection that’s been ported to most major platforms. It will release individually on Nintendo Switch on February 20th, where it will enjoy several new features. The series is now considered a major brand by Capcom, so it’s kind of wild to think the ride very well could have ended here.

This has to be one of the oddest ports ever.

The way in which Capcom has decided to port the Devil May Cry series to the Switch is just… odd. There’s no other way to really describe it, just… odd. The company has split up three remasters that were originally part of a single package called the HD Collection. The first two releases were barebones and ripped directly from the collection. But, for some bizarre reason, Capcom has added several features to the third game’s standalone release, such as weapon and stance switching. Now the third, and final, addition to the port is here: co-op.

As announced by producer Matt Walker via the series’ official Twitter, the Switch version of DMC3: SE will include local co-op Bloody Palace. The mode is a bonus one that presents players with floors of escalating challenges. You can now play as the brother duo of Dante and Vergil in it offline. The irony is that the latest game in the series, Devil May Cry 5, also has Bloody Palace, but has no co-op of any kind despite its massive success. Like I said: odd.

Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition will release on Nintendo Switch February 20th.

Instead of two equipped weapons, players can cycle through all unlocked weapons in combat.

Capcom continues its reveal of new features for the Nintendo Switch version of Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. After announcing Style Switching, which lets Dante change between four different Styles on the fly like in current games, the developer has now confirmed Weapon Switching. How is it different from the current system though?

Before, it was possible to switch between two guns and two Devil Arms. You had to change out which ones could be accessed between missions or at a Divinity Statue. However, this new system allows for switching between all unlocked weapons during combat. You can press ZR to switch between Devil Arms and ZL for switching guns.

You can also hold either button down and open a radial menu. Select the weapon you want from said menu with the right stick and you’re good to go. It’s an intriguing new mechanic that will open up the potential for much cooler combos than before. Capcom will showcase the new Weapon Switching during a livestream at 2 PM PT so check it out for more details.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition releases on February 20th for Nintendo Switch.

The weird re-release gets something extra apparently.

The Devil May Cry series returned at the beginning of 2019 with a roar. Devil May Cry 5 launched to strong critical and financial success, and has helped elevate the brand to Capcom’s upper echelons. The series is also finding its way to a Nintendo system for the first time as the original trilogy is being re-released in an odd way, with the first two games having launched on the Switch individually, and Devil May Cry 3 on the way soon. And it seems Capcom want the third game to have a little something special.

While the first two games’ Switch releases were ripped directly from the Devil May Cry HD Collection, it seems the third one is potentially getting something extra, according to a message posted on Producer Matt Walker’s official Twitter. What that something extra is remains to be seen.

Considering how barebones the last two re-releases of the first and second game, it’s somewhat surprising. Walker also teases three dates to check back on for more information (January 13th, 30th, and February 13th).

Devil May Cry 3 will release on Nintendo Switch on February 20th.

Devil May Cry is back in a big way, with Capcom considering it a major brand after the successful release of Devil May Cry 5 earlier in the year. It’s return has also seen the rather bizarre porting of previous games to the Switch, with games that were once released all together in a single pack cut up in single game releases. It’s a strange thing, but here we are. The first two games are out on Switch, with the third coming soon.

As announced via the official Devil May Cry Twitter, the third game in the series will come near the beginning of the year. The game serves as a prequel to the series as a younger Dante must face off against his brother. DMC3 was a return to form of the series after the second game was a major disappointment. The Special Edition added several tweaks and a new playable character to the base game.

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition will release on the Switch February 20th 2020. The first two games are available now.
