The final "massive" update for the run-and-gun, side-scrolling shooter from 2015 will add new playable characters and missions.

Devolver Digital and Free Lives have announced one final update for run-and-gun shooter Broforce. Titled Broforce Forever, it goes live in early 2023 for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Check out the teaser trailer below.

The update offers new playable characters, missions and “freedoms,” but what that entails remains to be seen. Broforce launched in October 2015 for PC and served as a parody of 1980s American action films. It starred spoofs of characters like John Rambo, John McClane from Die Hard, Arnold Schwarzenegger from Commando, and many more.

It would receive new expansions after launch, including The Expendabros (meant to promote The Expendables 3) and Alien Infestation. After releasing on PS4 in 2016, it would eventually arrive on Nintendo Switch in 2018. Critical reception has been generally positive for the title – check out our review here for more details, and stay tuned for more updates on the Broforce Forever update.

This last Summer saw the launch of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a battle royale (kind of) game that captured a lot of hearts and apparently also millions of people’s time and money. Like almost everything that hits it big nowadays, there’s also tons of crossover promotion with other brands. Fall Guys has already had its fair share of that, and it seems doomed to repeat it.

The official Twitter account tweeted out a skin hidden in shadow with the word soon over it. It clearly looks like the Doom Slayer (or Doom Guy if you’re more old school about it), and just to remove any doubt the official DOOM account retweet it shortly after. No time frame just yet for when to expect it, but no doubt it’ll be relatively soon.

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is available now on PlayStation 4 and PC. The game’s third season is set to be revealed at The Game Awards 2020 on December 10th.

The hammer will appear in levels at random to help or hinder you.

It’s no exaggeration to say that the biggest surprise of the year for gaming was Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. The unique take on the battle royale genre has been massively popular on both PlayStation and Steam, and looks to potentially be one of the next big things for people to continue to come back to over and over. Like all games of these types, you also need things to shake up the status quo a bit, and so enter Big Yeetus.

As announced on the official Twitter, it was revealed that one of the upcoming additions is this huge hammer. It will seemingly be put into a level at random to slam into your guy. Big Yeetus apparently isn’t there to help or hinder, but to potentially do both. As illustrated in the gif below, it can knock you closer to the goal, but it also can knock you further away as well potentially.

No date is given for when Yeetus will make his grand debut, but it may come around the same time as the season 2 update that was previewed earlier. For now, you’ll have to play Fall Guys Yeetus-free on either PS4 or PC.

I've got a SPICY LEAK for you all

Big Yeetus will randomly appear in levels – to shake things up

August promises plenty of high profile releases.

The Autumn deluge is nearly upon us and starts with August delivering a number of great releases. Whether you’re seeking the next big Switch exclusive, a new 4X strategy title, a third person shooter from Remedy or some good ol’ fashioned horror, this month is looking packed. Let’s take a look at the 11 top games of August 2019.

Madden NFL 20

The latest in the Madden series promises a bevy of new features for long-time fans. A new story mode called Face of the Franchise: QB1 is being introduced which sees player-created characters going from playing quarterback in college football to the NFL. The Pro Bowl will also be making a return but gameplay-wise, perhaps the most intriguing new addition are the X-Factor abilities. Each player will have their own signature talents and abilities which can tip the scales – like having an increase on maximum pass distance. Madden NFL 20 releases on August 2nd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall

Triumph Studios is back at it again with another turn-based strategy title. Except this time, Age of Wonders: Planetfall takes the series’ style of expansion and conquest into the sci-fi genre. The Star Union has collapsed and six factions – each with their own units and traits – vie for supremacy. Battles are turn-based and employ some new mechanics like grazing where shots missed will still deal 50 percent damage. However, the developer is also looking to introduce more destructible environments, more complex economic and diplomatic choices, and more varied gameplay. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is out on August 6th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC so we’ll see how well it fares.

Metal Wolf Chaos XD

Cult-classic Metal Wolf Chaos is finally coming to the West for…some reason. The remaster Metal Wolf Chaos XD is being handled by General Arcade and will have an improved resolution, better graphics and improvements to the gameplay. As for the story, it’s about Michael Wilson, the president of the United States, jumping into an overpowered mech to stop a coup led by the vice president. What more can we say? If you’re interested in third person mech shooting with corny writing and lots of customization, Metal Wolf Chaos XD might be worth the wait. It’s out on August 6th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Remnant: From the Ashes

Gunfire Games is known for the Darksiders series but will be presenting something completely different with Remnant: From the Ashes. This third person shooter (with co-op support) sees players battling a powerful inter-dimensional evil. The key to defeating it is to travel to other dimensions, scavenge whatever resources are available, upgrading weapons and so on while investigating the enemy’s origin. Levels are dynamically generated with different encounters and events, and there are a number of bosses to battle on the way. Remnant: From the Ashes is out on August 20th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Ancestors is very different though – it’s a survival game where players control an ape clan as it evolves through the ages. That means exploring new areas, hunting, bonding, controlling other clan members and of course, evolving (with various skills unlocked in the process). Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is out on August 27th for PC via the Epic Games Store.

Control

Step into The Oldest House, a surreal location that serves as the headquarters for the Central Bureau of Control. An entity called Hiss has overrun the facility and killed the acting director. As a result, Jesse Faden, a woman with supernatural powers, must take up the shape-shifting Service Weapon and fight back. As players explore the constantly shifting walls of The Oldest House, they’ll come across different side quests and NPCs, learn new abilities and even unlock different secrets. Control arrives on August 27th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Life is Strange 2: Episode 4

Dontnod Entertainment’s epic saga of Sean and Daniel Diaz is slowly winding down with Life is Strange 2: Episode 4 releasing on August 22nd. The duo have come a long way since the horrific incident in Seattle and have met a range of challenges. While the final episode releases in December, Episode 4 might be a good time to hop in for the appropriate amount of tears and cliff-hangers.

Hunt: Showdown

Originally Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, Crytek restructured this title into Hunt: Showdown, a co-op PvEvP game where bounty hunters embark into the Louisiana swamp to hunt monsters. The catch is that after snagging a monster’s bounty, you become marked by other hunters in the area and must successfully escape to reap the benefits. With support for up to 10 players, solo queue and new monsters since first entering early access, Hunt: Showdown is shaping up to be a unique experience when it launches on August 27th for Xbox One and PC.

Astral Chain

PlatinumGames is known for its combination of genres but Astral Chain is on another level. Taking place in the future in the last bastion of humanity Ark, the story sees the forces of Neuron using Legions to battle evil. There’s a bit of everything here – investigations, exploration, side quests, NPC interactions, puzzle solving…and that’s not even mentioning the combat. Players use a variety of Legions in battle to quickly attack, bind foes or execute powerful sync attacks. Astral Chain releases on August 30th for the Nintendo Switch and we can’t wait to see what else it holds.

Blair Witch

Bloober Team’s Blair Witch is a first person horror title that takes place a few years after the first film as former police officer Ellis and his trusty dog Bullet investigate the Black Hills Forest in Maryland. The developer’s penchant for reality-warping environments and horrors in Layers of Fear and Observer could the Blair Witch mythos well. Then again, this could be yet another horror title that fails to capture what made the first film great. We’ll have to wait and see how when Blair Witch releases on August 30th for PC and Xbox One.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The other major horror offering next month is The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan from Supermassive Games. It sees five tourists traveling to the South Pacific Ocean and encountering a ghost ship. Obviously fun and happy times ensue. Much like the developer’s previous horror game Until Dawn, players can partake in different quick time events and ultimately decide who lives and dies. There’s even co-op and four-player support, making the journey for survival that much more perilous. Man of Medan is out on August 30th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Developer No Code, better known for Stories Untold, appeared on the recent “State of Play” showcase from PlayStation to reveal its next game, Observation. It’s essentially a sci-fi thriller where the player must deal with mysterious happenings to a space station’s crew. The twist? You are the space station.

The station is controlled by S.A.M., an artificial intelligence that can use the cameras and various control systems. To this effect you’ll be helping Dr. Emma Fisher as she tries to figure out what happened to the crew. What’s going on with S.A.M. also forms a part of the mystery.

Published by Devolver Digital, Observation will be releasing on May 21st. You can pre-order it now for PS4 and PC. The title is currently exclusive to PS4 on consoles thanks to Sony taking an “early interest” in the game.
Broforce barely beats out Action Henk.

Broforce is the first (and only game for a little while anyway) that has been officially confirmed as coming to the Playstation Plus free games lineup in March. Why did Sony announce this game ahead of the others, which will likely be announced by the end of the week? Because Broforce won the public voting round for March that pitted the title against a couple of other independent games that have been largely popular on platforms such as the PC.

The Playstation EU Twitter account confirmed Broforce on Monday morning. That means the game will be free when the Playstation Plus lineup launches next Tuesday on March 1. Broforce was going up against Action Henk and Assault Android Cactus. For quite a while, it appeared as though Action Henk was going to be the winner in this polling category but faded near the end of the round.

For now, the February lineup of PS Plus games is still active and available and will be right up until the March games are released. As has been the case for many months, Sony has kept a tight lid on what the other games that are offered up next month will be. Sony announces its full lineup about a week before the new month, meaning we should be able to find out what titles will be offered on the PS Vita, PS3 and PS4 for free soon. While you’re waiting for the rest of the lineup, you can check out our review of Broforce here.

The Bros are out and about but how expendable are they?

A part of me has a very soft spot for Broforce, the 2D side-scrolling shooter/platformer from Free Lives Games. The concept didn’t have a tough time grabbing me – whether it’s the 80’s action hero fetish and hyper-patriotic stylings or the ultra-violent, explosive gameplay, Broforce seemed hell-bent on appealing to my childhood in the craziest way possible. Broforce is still a game though and one that has its share of ups and downs all-throughout.

In Broforce, you control a squad of Hollywood-inspired “Bros” that have to “liberate” a bunch of hotspots teeming with “terrorists”. Political incorrectness aside, the game seems much more focused on appealing to the bravado and out-and-out violence that characterized early action movies starring the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and so on. Throughout Broforce, you’ll be rescuing hostages and gaining access to a number of Bro-monikered icons like the Commando, Agent K, Rambo, and so on (for instance, MacGyver is actually MacBrover and Blade is Brade. Yes, seriously. Just go with it).

"Complimenting the insane action is the eclectic selection of Bros. Each Bro has his own special attacks and explosives. Bro Dredd, for instance, has bullets which can bounce back and forth from objects while his explosive is a Smart Bomb that can be remotely piloted."

You’ll be commanded to head to different hotspots inspired by countries like Vietnam to cleanse all of it of the bad fellows. Levels are simple at first, simply tasking you to eliminate hostiles while reaching an outpost, executing the satanic leader (and by satanic, we mean Satan in a black suit literally) and extracting from the location as it’s carpet bombed to the tune of guitar riffs. Moving along, there will be more complex areas which task you with climbing and destroying the walls with your weaponry to gain the advantage on foes.

One cool little feature is the ability to shoot some explosives so they travel upwards and into enemies. It’s also easy to destroy the floor under your foes and watch them fall to their hapless deaths. Certain areas will be laced with mines that you have to quickly jump away from and enemy spawns will throw heavy gunners, foot soldiers and suicide bombers your way. There will even be devil bosses in some cases that range from an attack chopper to a large, terrorist-launching cannon.

Complimenting the insane action is the eclectic selection of Bros. Each Bro has his own special attacks and explosives. Bro Dredd, for instance, has bullets which can bounce back and forth from objects while his explosive is a Smart Bomb that can be remotely piloted. Bro in Black can use his Neuralyzer to confound foes for a set period of time while his Noisy Cricket fires piercing, explosive lasers that threaten to knock him back with each trigger pull. There’s a certain appeal to acquiring new Bros, especially when trying to recognize them. However, not every Bro is made equal. Some are fairly useful in every situation like Snake Broskin with his machine gun and Molotov cocktail. MacBrover, on the other hand, feels limited by the throwing range of his TNT explosives (though his explosive turkey can be devastating if thrown in the right place). Similarly, Brodell Walker’s limited range with the shotgun doesn’t hold a candle to the range and devastation of Brommando, Rambro and Brominator.

"There’s also the fact for all of its retro 80’s action movie pandering and graphics, Broforce can be very repetitive. After a while, you’ll tire off the numerous explosions and simply shooting enemies until they’re mincemeat."

Each Bro offers an intriguing new experience but the biggest issue is the automatic switching between Bros every time you rescue a hostage. Tearing things up with the Brominator? The game may decide to transform you into the melee-centric Brade when you rescue your next hostage. Enjoying the intriguing navigation mechanics of Cherry Broling? You may find yourself as Bro Dredd next and dealing with the clunky, slower firing hand cannon. It doesn’t help that you have no choice in the Bros selected but you’re also pushed to rescue hostages every single time in a level. If you don’t, you won’t have enough lives and in such a chaotic environment where enemies can one-shot you, those extra lives will be necessary.

Broforce walks an intriguing line between challenging and frustrating. Blowing up your environments and setting off a chain of explosions while too close can result in a shocking demise more often than not. Being unable to properly kill enemies from a distance because your select Bro doesn’t have a high fire rate is just plain annoying. Going through a level can oftentimes alternate between bum rushing everything and reaching the finale quickly or banging your head against the stupid deaths you incur. And sadly enough, the number of lives you gain from rescuing hostages does not carry over into other missions.

There’s also the fact that for all of its retro 80’s action movie pandering and graphics, Broforce can be very repetitive. After a while, you’ll tire off the numerous explosions and simply shooting enemies until they’re mincemeat. This isn’t even akin to marathoning all the famous action films in a row and becoming numb from the violence. It’s simply that when it comes to gameplay, there’s not a whole lot of variety in Broforce even as each character tries to innovate the act of violence in some way or another. One can really only shoot so many terrorists for so long.

"At the end of the day, Broforce is best enjoyed in small bursts. It’s come a long way since Rambros in 2012 and the action is certainly manic enough to get you coming back. "

That being said, Broforce does try to think outside of the box. The online co-op can be pretty fun at times though you’ll obviously enjoy the rip-roaring nature of the action with close friends. Explosion Run is a cool little mode that challenges you navigate through auto-scrolling levels filled with explosives without dying. Arcade Mode is just a simple run through the game’s levels while World Story Campaign lets you choose which hotspots to batter into oblivion. There’s even a Level Editor in case you want to craft your own little carnage-filled stages.

At the end of the day, Broforce is best enjoyed in small bursts. It’s come a long way since Rambros in 2012 and the action is certainly manic enough to get you coming back. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s ultimately shallow, doesn’t have much direction to it, can frustrate you much like the harder levels of Contra (even without automatically switching characters in between) and gets repetitive after a while, much like your run-of-the-mill 80s action film. Play it for the nostalgia rush and the comedic callbacks to famous action stars but don’t go expecting a ton of brains from these Bros.

The Talos Principle will be getting an expansion later this month, on July 23, when Road to Gehenna launches for it on Windows PCs, Mac, and Linux. Road to Gehenna will consist of four episodes containing new, challenging puzzles, and new additions to the story by The Talos Principle writers Tom Jubert and Jonas Kyratzes.

“The original plan was to divide The Talos Principle: Road to Gehenna into over 100 different $5 DLCs but the Devolver Digital DLC Ethics Department advised against it,” noted Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “That particular department has subsequently been disbanded.”

Just in case it was not clear, that entire thing is meant to be an ironic joke. Don’t take it seriously.

The Talos Principle is available right now on Windows, Mac, and Linux via Steam; it can also be bought on Android devices. A release for the PlayStation 4 is planned for later this year. Stay tuned for more coverage.

The world's first 2.25D game.

Roll7, the guys who brought us the excellent skateboarding title OlliOlli on the PlayStation Vita earlier this year (with the game also coming to other systems later this year), have now announced their next game- Not A Hero, which they describe as the first indie cover based shooter for next gen consoles… presented in 2.25D (no, I’m not making this up, this is literally how they are pitching the game). Like OlliOlli, Not A Hero will also be published by Devolver Digital.

“The Roll7 team was less than enthused about partnering with a publisher of questionable morals and hygiene but through a series of legal maneuvers and old fashioned black magic here we are – stuck with Devolver Digital,” noted Roll7 creative director, John Ribbins.

“We are so glad to have partnered with the ISO-Slant team,” said Devolver Digital CFO Fork Parker. “While there are plenty of tools for 2D and 3D game development, if your ass wants some 2¼D action write that check for ISO-Slant, baby.”

The game will be out on PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam later this year. It is also hitting the Xbox One and the PS4.

Classic 90s are back again!

The classic 3D Realms first person shooter has been reimagined as Shadow Warriors by Devolver Digital and Flying Wild Hig, and man does it look sweet. It looks gleefully over the top and corny in that classic ’90s 3D Realms way, and the best part is, it doesn’t seem to take itself seriously either, meaning it can be enjoyed without players running into some bullshit story that tries to ground itself, but because of its sheer absurdity can’t really be accepted at all.

The gameplay, obviously, looks good, gory, as you’d imagine from a 3D Realms first person shooter; the graphics, in spite of the remastering, still look outdated, but hey, who cares. The game looks fun, and that’s what matters.

This game is now available exclusively on PC, digitally on Steam, GOG, and via Humble Bundles. No console release has been announced yet. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage of the title.
