"Once we are ready to show what we've been working on, we will," said Michael Douse, the studio's director of publishing.

After coyly noting that it wasn’t yet supposed to announce Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for PS5, Larian’s director of publishing, Michael Douse, has said there are no plans for Divinity: Original Sin 3.

“There aren’t currently any plans for a new Divinity Original Sin 3 game, but once we are ready to show what we’ve been working on, we will,” he said on Twitter in response to another user. Which seems innocuous, but he didn’t acknowledge the recent trademarks for Divinity.

You see, there’s a statue that The Game Awards has been teasing for weeks, leaving many befuddled about what its designs could relate to. Some thought it was Diablo 4, others believed it was God of War or The Elder Scrolls 6. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier noted that it was none of these things, but that the announcement would excite many people.

Afterwards, trademarks of the Divinity name and a symbol that resembled the statue’s multi-armed design emerged. These were registered by IHDE and Partner Rechtsanwalte, which usually handles Larian’s trademarks. Of course, it’s very likely not Original Sin 3, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a new title in the same universe, especially considering the franchise began with Divine Divinity.

We’ll find out tomorrow at 4:30 PM PST when The Game Awards airs, so stay tuned. As for Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, it could be a shadow-drop for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. Check out our review of the base game, widely considered one of the best of all time.

Larian founder Swen Vincke said the team was "elated" about the DLC cancellation and said its next title is "different" but "still familiar."

At GDC 2024, Larian Studios founder and Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke announced that it wasn’t planning any DLC or expansions for the critically acclaimed RPG. It even ruled out a potential Baldur’s Gate 4 in favor of something new.

However, when speaking to IGN, Vincke revealed that the developer did begin working on DLC for the title and even considered a sequel. “Because of all the success, the obvious thing would have been to do a DLC, so we started on one. We started even thinking about Baldur’s Gate 4. But we hadn’t had closure on BG3 yet, and to jump forward on something new felt wrong.

“We had also spent a whole bunch of time converting the system into a video game, and we wanted to do new things. There are a lot of constraints on making Dungeons and Dragons, and 5th Edition is not an easy system to put into a video game. We had all these ideas of new combat we wanted to try out and they were not compatible.”

While the team worked on a massive Epilogue and new gameplay features with its patches, it was ultimately unsure how to proceed with DLC. Upon actually getting to the task, Vincke reveals, “You could see the team was doing it because everyone felt like we had to do it, but it wasn’t really coming from the heart, and we’re very much a studio from the heart. It’s what got us into misery, and it’s also been the reason for our success.”

After a Christmas vacation, Vincke decided to cancel the DLC. “[I] came back, and I told the team, ‘You know we’re not going to do it. We’re going to shift around, and we’re going to start doing these other things that we talked about, that we planned on doing before we started on Baldur’s Gate.’

“Those were always the plans for afterwards, we have two games we want to make, and we have lots of concepts. So, let’s have closure on Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s been great. We’ve done our job. It’s a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Let’s pass the torch to another studio to pick up this incredible legacy.”

Surprisingly, or perhaps not, the team was “elated” by the news. “I thought they were going to be angry at me because I just couldn’t muster the energy. I saw so many elated faces, which I didn’t expect, and I could tell they shared the same feelings, so we were all aligned with one another. And I’ve had so many developers come to me after and say, ‘Thank god.’

“I’m always the one where it starts with the initial idea and then I give it to the team. They start iterating it and turn it into something much better. During Baldur’s Gate 3, I pitched them what the next game would be…If I see they’re excited, I’ll say, ‘Okay, let’s do that.’ If they’re not, it’s back to the drawing board. So they were very excited about a couple of the things we were planning on doing.

“Then the pivot to start doing Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC was expected because it’s what you do…We didn’t have any antagonism against Baldur’s Gate 4 or DLC, but the heart wasn’t there. It was more routine work than actually being excited. Now we have the excitement back in the room, and that’s a big important thing.”

As for the developer’s next title, Vincke unfortunately confirmed that it’s not Divinity: Original Sin 3. It’s “different than what you think it is” but “still familiar.” Earlier this year, he noted that it would be “quite some time” before discussing the next title, but after the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian is encouraged to “push many boundaries.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It’s sold way over 10 million units and even though DLC isn’t happening, it will still receive updates, including mod support and cross-platform play. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.

Larian Studios' Swen Vincke says the team will take a break after Baldur's Gate 3 release to "refresh ourselves creatively."

Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is one week away from leaving Steam Early Access and launching on PC. It’s a massive role-playing game and one of this year’s biggest releases. However, as big of a deal as it is, Divinity: Original Sin is what got the developer this far. So the question is: Will Larian ever return to the series?

Speaking to IGN, Larian CEO Swen Vincke confirmed that the team will return to it at “some point”, but not before the team takes a break after Baldur’s Gate 3.

“It’s [Divinity: Original Sin] our universe we built, so we’re definitely gonna get back there at some point. We will get back there at some point. We’ll first finish this one [Baldur’s Gate 3] now and then take a break because we will need to refresh ourselves creatively also.

“You’re seeing 400 developers putting their heart and souls into this. You’re getting the best of them and their craft into this game. And so I can tell you, it’s quite a thing.”

The last major title in the series is Divinity: Original Sin 2, which was first released for PC in 2017 after spending a year in early access. It received extensive critical acclaim (check out our review), with many considering it one of the best RPGs ever. The Definitive Edition would arrive for PC, Xbox One and PS4 in 2018, adding new content and quests before it arrived on Nintendo Switch in 2019.

As for Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s out on August 3rd for PC and September 6th for PS5.
A mysterious symbol that resembles a "3" has popped up on Larian's site.

It’s no secret that Larian Studios’ Divinity: Original Sin 2 is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. The developer would go on to release a Definitive Edition last year (free for PC players), and alsp announced Divinity: Fallen Heroes in collaboration with Logic Artists. However, it seems the studio itself has something even bigger in the works.

On the website Larian.com, a simple image has popped up that looks like the Roman numeral for “3”. In fact, the page’s tab looks exactly like this. Larian Studios’ name and logo can be seen at the bottom of the page. If this isn’t a sign of Divinity: Original Sin 3, than what is?

Time will tell of course, but it wouldn’t be strange to see an announcement and reveal during E3 2019. In the meantime, Divinity: Fallen Heroes is slated to release this year for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Suffice it to say that it’s a great time to be a Divinity fan.
