As part of his portfolio, artist Thao Le has also showcased the work he did on the since-cancelled DOOM 4: Hell on Earth project.

As id Software sits on the verge of releasing DOOM: The Dark Ages to the general public, one of the artists working at the studio has published a host of screenshots on his own website that might give us a hint to what the original concept for DOOM 4: Hell on Earth would have looked like. Along with those, the artist – Thao Le – has also uploaded screenshots that might indicate an early attempt at reimagining the original Quake using modern technology.

According to Le’s website, the screenshots feature scenes and models that that were used directly in id Software’s in-house idTech 5 engine, and also doesn’t include finishing touches that you would typically see in a game, like radiosity rendering. According to Le, several of the scenes depicted in the screenshots were created by making use of a combination of existing assets from DOOM as well as original assets. The overall theme for these, as described by Le, is a re-imagined environment from Quake with modern touches.

“It has two parts,” explains Le on the website. “The first one is stone and old machinery ‘melted’ into each other in the weird way that is not familiar with human logic. Gears, chains are moving to create dynamic [environment] and can be used as game play. The second part [environment] has just stones with very mystery structures in which stones are dynamically float or animated that causes the environments keeps changing during the combat.”

When it comes to DOOM 4: Hell on Earth, Le has described the overarching themes of his work on the game’s environments as having to created a city with the key words being “abandoned” and “destruction”. The environments in these screenshots, which you can check out here, were created using idTech 4 that once again doesn’t feature finishing touches like PBR or Substance rendering.

According to the resume on his website, Le has been working in the gaming industry since 2001, when he joined Lucas Arts and worked on titles like Gladius and Star Fighter 2. In 2004, Le moved to EA Los Angeles, where he worked on titles like Medal of Honor, a cancelled project dubbed Tiberium, a Lord of the Rings game, and Golden Eye.

Since 2008, however, Le has been working with id Software. After having worked as an artist on the cancelled DOOM 4: Hell on Earth, he also worked on other shooters by the studio, including both Rage titles, DOOM (2016), and most recently, Quake Champions. Interestingly, Le hasn’t listed more recent games like DOOM Eternal or the upcoming DOOM: The Dark Ages as projects he has worked on.

In the past, various developers from id Software have revealed quite a few details about DOOM 4. Celebrating the release of DOOM (2016), designer Kevin Cloud spoke about the cancelled project, saying that it felt more like a story-based game and less like one that could belong in the DOOM series. “We explored a direction and got to a certain point and felt like this really wasn’t capturing what we felt like was going to be a strong DOOM and what the fans would want from it.”

More recently, footage from the cancelled title has been released for the sake of preservation courtesy of id Software and documentary-maker Noclip.

Story and cinematic presentation defined DOOM's previous iteration.

Id Software found a new lease of life in the industry once DOOM, it’s oft-delayed first person shooter, finally released. However, if DOOM was meant to be more of a return to the series’ classic gameplay, what defined its previous iteration, namely Doom 4?

Designer Kevin Cloud spoke to GameSpot about the same and noted that Doom 4 didn’t feel like a Doom game due to its overall story. “We explored a direction and got to a certain point and felt like this really wasn’t capturing what we felt like was going to be a strong Doom and what the fans would want from it.”

Producer Marty Stratton further noted that Doom 4 felt more like “Call of Doom“, essentially a Doom version of the Call of Duty series. “It was much closer to something like that type of game. A lot more cinematic; a lot more story to it. A lot more characters around you that you were with throughout the course of the game. Definitely a different setting – it took place on Earth.”

And though it was to have “unbelievable” production values, it just didn’t feel like a Doom game at the end of the day, what with some sections involving taking cover and fighting zombies..

“It was definitely a twist on Doom that took it into a much more cinematic, much more scripted type of experience. It was a re-imagining of Doom in a way that was new. It didn’t feel as much like Doom as I think a lot of us expected it would feel or hoped it would feel.”

Creative director Hugo Martin did that Doom 4 had a “Robert Zemeckis-y Contact” that was “awesome, but it was more realistic. It was more about the global impact of a hellish invasion. As a concept I could see why they went there because I would probably want to explore that, too – if it wasn’t a Doom game. To tell a bigger story, it scarified the doom slayer. Doom is about one guy involved in big things. Doom 4 was about the big things.”

Are you happy with the DOOM we eventually got? Let us know in the comments below.

Bethesda kicks off this year's E3. Watch it here.

This version of the game has been called a combination of Killzone and Rage with a bit of Gears of War mixed in.

There has been an awful lot of talk about what Doom 4 is going to look like over the last few years. The real rumblings surrounding the game actually started back in July of last year when Bethesda started letting it be known they were going to be working on the next title in the long running series. Today we got a look at what the company had originally planned for this particular project.

A video has started making the rounds of a game that has now been confirmed as being scrapped, but it certainly looks like whatever Bethesda does come up with when talking about Doom 4 it was going to look quite a bit different than any of the other games in the series. This video, which was posted to the Doomworld website shows the work that id Software had been working on prior to 2012. This particular take on the Doom world has now been left in the dust.

Even if this isn’t the game anymore, it still allows people to see the concept that Bethesda and id were looking at for the game until the last few years. If any part of this video can be expected to be something along the lines of what Doom 4 will be, it will be a very interesting approach and a complete change from where the game went in the first three iterations. Now that we know what the game won’t be, it’s a safe bet that people are going to get even more fired up to see what the game will actually feature. Check out the video below for the canceled project that was to be Doom 4.

So you like shooters? So does 2015.

Last week, we talked about upcoming RPGs that you should be excited for in 2015. This week, we’re talking about shooters. There’s a little bit of everything in the FPS genre next year, from solo experiences to multiplayer bonanzas, from realistic games to those with a sci-fi edge. Here are fifteen we think you should keep an eye on.

This list is in no particular order.

15. PlanetSide 2 (PS4)

This one has already hit PC, but given the fact that it was published by Sony Online Entertainment, a PS4 release was inevitable. In case you’re unfamiliar with the title, PlanetSide 2 is a sci-fi MMOFPS that’s built around large battles (up to 2000 players per continent) and eternally feuding factions. It’s a game for FPS fans looking for something that’s a little more involved than your average shooter, and it’s coming next year.

Bethesda's Pete Hines says the developer will need to work hard to win over fans.

The next Doom from id Software may be a make or break opportunity for the developer, since Bethesda Softworks’ VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines says no one is assuming it will be awesome. This isn’t so much speaking out against the quality of the game so much as it being so long since a Doom title has been released. In today’s world, a new Doom will certainly have a lot to prove.

Speaking to MCV, Hines took the example of Wolfenstein, which was stuck in a rut before The New Order. “The last couple of games were either ‘ok’ or ‘not great’. It wasn’t a franchise where people were desperate for the next one. Wolfenstein isn’t Uncharted. We knew this would take some explaining. But developer Machine Games has now untarnished the IP.”

“We view that [Doom] similarly to Wolfenstein, because it’s been so long since the last Doom game. We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again. We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome.

“We are going to have to prove that this is something that’s going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can’t be: ‘It’s Doom, of course you’re going to play it’. But that just makes us work harder.”

Doom will be showcased at this year’s QuakeCon in a special sneak peek for attendees. So look forward to more details emerging from there.

After years and years of stunted development, id Software’s Doom 4 – now simply titled Doom – re-emerged as beta access was offered to those who pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order. While news on the multiplayer beta is still to be revealed, it seems that Doom will be making an appearance at this year’s QuakeCon.

Yes, QuakeCon is some how still a thing. No, we don’t know how (or for how long).

Those who attend QuakeCon will receive an exclusive sneak peek at Doom as part of the Annual Welcome presentation. id Software revealed that it will be showing more of the game at a latter date but that it couldn’t resist showcasing something to those who supported the franchise over the years.

QuakeCon 2014 will be happening on July 17th to 20th in Dallas, Texas. Will you be attending the convention? What are your thoughts on Doom? Let us know in the comments below.

How Id Software can take DOOM to new heights.

Bethesda managed to only just evade the ‘Half Life 3 confirmed’ hilarity of Doom 4 by expectant gamers. After being in development for ages and finally being announced after going through development hell, we expect that the game would take the ‘hell’/horror aspect to new heights.

There’s a lot riding on Id Software’s shoulders after the announcement of the Doom game after so many delays. If anything, it has made us look back on the legacy of the series and reevaluate our expectations from Doom 4 anew. But what all does Id and Bethesda need to take care of to make the game even better than its predecessors? We have a look at some of the aspects that would really help keep the game carry forward its name.

15. More Weapons

Granted that the Doom games have had a plethora of weapons at the player’s disposal, but after so much time we’d definitely want to see something new at the front. The BFG was a stupendous addition to the arsenal, but it’d do good to have a whole new set of weapons than put weapons for the sake of remembrance.

Taking a look at the perilous journey id Software took for Doom 4.

1993 was an important year for a number of reasons. E-mail had had taken off finally, we had the Adobe PDF which was probably the only true document sharing tool of the time which was any good. But that’s not what I am here to talk about. 1993 was a rather enjoyable year too. id Software’s release of Wolfenstein 3D in 1992, which is often considered the game that truly brought first-person-shooter games to the gaming industry, was followed the next year by Doom. Now Doom was a science fiction-horror themed game that had ushered into the newly accepted era of fps games. This game which was distributed via shareware and mail order gained so much popularity that within a handful of years, millions of players had played the game and commended it. Games that had followed up to Doom and made it to the fps genre were called Doom clones.

Basking in the brilliance of such a glorious series, id Software has made it through a lot of years and quite commendably so, and after more than a decade of the first Doom game’s release, the next instalment in the Doom series is going to be released. Of course there were a number of other titles in the series and a few spin-offs, but the next title in the series has attracted special attention not just from us, but from people all around the globe.

" We never got to know what kind of development hell id had gone through but in 2011 we did get to know that the game was completely pulled back and restarted on a fresh note. It was later revealed that the pre-2011 Doom game was heavily scripted and cinematic in nature which made it look rather like a movie."

After defining and bringing a whole new genre of gaming and coming up with titles like Wolfenstein and Doom in quick succession, id Software had made its mark in the industry. Over the years we have seen great titles coming from the developers and a lot are from the two aforementioned series. The last Doom title in the series was Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, disregarding the spin-offs in the series. After its release in 2005, id had taken a back seat and given themselves a little time to relax after working so hard for such stupendous a game.

Our anticipation for the announcement of the next title in the Doom series was finally put to rest on the 7th of May 2008. The announcement had received perfervid response and the fourth game had really drawn some serious attention after Doom 3’s success. Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, had said that the game would take place on Earth like in Doom 2, and added that they will deviate from the critically acclaimed horror style gameplay of Doom 3.

While the internet community was trying to wrap its head around the meagre information provided by the developers of whether it will be a sequel, a prequel or a reboot and how the game was said to be ‘deep in development’ alongside talks of the fourth game having dedicated servers, the developers apparently had hit an insurmountable obstacle.

We never got to know what kind of development hell id had gone through but in 2011 we did get to know that the game was completely pulled back and restarted on a fresh note. It was later revealed that the pre-2011 Doom game was heavily scripted and cinematic in nature which made it look rather like a movie. Tim Willits of id Software had claimed in 2013 that the Doom game lacked the spirit and personality that its predecessors had held and thus the project had been re-started.

"There have been no solid revelations about what the new Doom game would entail, if it will continue the story where any of the previous Doom games left off, or whether it will be set in a world completely different from the previous games. "

Even so, it was argued that the game hasn’t shown much promise as of yet. Mostly because nigh on naught has been revealed about the upcoming Doom game. There have been no solid revelations about what the new Doom game would entail, if it will continue the story where any of the previous Doom games left off, or whether it will be set in a world completely different from the previous games. id had revealed that the game would not be called Doom 4, but Doom. It’s like having the Xbox One again. And a Doom II maybe.

This alludes to the fact that they are attempting to re-establish the Doom series in a completely new light. Although the ‘why’ of this step eludes me completely. But having no concrete evidence about what direction they’re heading to, saying so only finds a way into the contentious category of discussions.

The fact that id hasn’t provided its fans with anything solid about the development of the game even after so long is another reason why everyone is so apprehensive and doubtful about what id is doing with Doom.

id Software had to struggle a fair bit throughout the years of development of the new Doom game. According to id Software co-founder Tim Willits, the announcement of Doom 4 was made so as to attract new talent to the company.

That may sound a little lame strategy, to attract people to a game’s development by banking on an established franchise with no plan in mind, and we can completely understand that over 20 years, a company changes radically, but even after restarting the project, not much has been accomplished. Another Blow to the id team was when lead programmer John Carmack left id for the Oculus Rift VR.

"After leaving id in November 2013, Carmack had stated that there were some major issues with the development of Doom. He had said that although id has always strived for perfection, it was not right on their part to delay the production of a game for so long. "

He had tried to work on both the projects simultaneously to aid the development of the Doom game as well as introduce the Oculus VR in a better manner by associating it with Doom. But he was left with no support and ultimately had to pick one over the other. Losing the lead programmer of a game series can deal a major blow to the development of the company.

After leaving id in November 2013, Carmack had stated that there were some major issues with the development of Doom. He had said that although id has always strived for perfection, it was not right on their part to delay the production of a game for so long. Quite rightly so.

Having left to developing a single game for so long leads to stagnation as was revealed in 2011 when the Doom project had to be brought to the drawing board anew. Another thing that he had added was that the ‘essence’ of the Doom game was in question.

A multitude of people have an equally diverse set of thoughts and that seemed to have been a problem for id. If it were the case, it makes me wonder how in Lucifer’s name have we been able to get games like Doom 2 and 3. It’s definitely not that the people at id are incapable.

Maybe they have gone too far with their ambitions in making too perfect a Doom in lieu of making the Doom franchise as their flagship one. That may have been the reason as to why the game was scrapped in the first place in 2011, for being too ambitious which had resulted in a thoroughly scripted and poorly made ‘movie’ game.

"So, even after all the obscurity about the development of the game and the laziness of the developers and the team (if you may), there’s still a lot of hope. The fact that even after going through development hell and botching up their project, they didn't give it up and re-started shows their commitment to roll out a good game."

Carmack had also pointed out that the time of development of Doom was perfect for utilising the PS3 and the Xbox 360. He had stated that only recently had the developers understood to tap the full potential of the consoles of the previous generations. He was right in saying so and we had GTA V as proof, which was launched before the coming of the current generation of consoles when the developers and publishers could have easily waited for the launch of new consoles.

Disregarding all of that, what it boils down to, is that id Software has provided us with an amazing of games like Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Quake and Rage. Doom was another fine piece of art off their palette. So, even after all the obscurity about the development of the game and the laziness of the developers and the team (if you may), there’s still a lot of hope.

The fact that even after going through development hell and botching up their project, they didn’t give it up and re-started shows their commitment to roll out a good game.

Agreed, it has been really long but that doesn’t necessarily lend credence to let us criticise them to no end. Look at Kid Icarus: Uprising and Street Fighter IV.

Both these games took around as much time to come out as it did for the Australopithecus to become Homo Sapien. But in the end, the result was amazing for both the scenarios. Regardless of it, id Software has a lot riding on its shoulders and an equally lot to prove.

"Doom’s beta keys are exclusively available to players who buy Wolfenstein: The New Order but no date has been set for Doom, or even its beta. We’re still a long way from knowing what the would manifest into. "

After showing us their potential with great games, after defining a new genre of gaming and ushering into a new era of gaming altogether, id Software has come a long way in gaming history and they still have a long walk to take if they wish to remain one of the most revered developers of all time. And by no means do they lack the capacity.

Doom’s beta keys are exclusively available to players who buy Wolfenstein: The New Order but no date has been set for Doom, or even its beta. We’re still a long way from knowing what the would manifest into. There’s nothing official out yet; you may have noted that with the kind of pictures used in this article. So all we can do for now is keep our fingers crossed, hopes high and bombard id’s discussions forums.

Former id Software co-founder John Carmack talks about Doom 4's troubled development.

In an interview with Wired, John Carmack talked about id Software’s Doom 4, including the number of issues the project has faced. Having recently departed the company that he helped found, Carmack believes that one of the biggest problems of all is identifying the essence of the franchise at this point.

“It’s been hard — one of the things that was a little bit surprising that you might not think so from the outside, but deciding exactly what the essence of Doom is, with this 20-year history, is a heck of a lot harder than you might think. You get multiple Doom fans that have different views of what the core essence of it is, and there’s been a design challenge through all of it.”

As for the long development cycle, which is beginning to mirror Duke Nukem Forever in more ways than one, Carmack stated that, “The worst aspect of the continuing pace of game development that we fell into was the longer and longer times between releases. If I could go back in time and change one thing along the trajectory of id Software, it would be, do more things more often.

“And that was id’s mantra for so long: ‘It’ll be done when it’s done.’ And I recant from that. I no longer think that is the appropriate way to build games. I mean, time matters, and as years go by — if it’s done when it’s done and you’re talking a month or two, fine. But if it’s a year or two, you need to be making a different game.”

Currently, Carmack is working with Oculus VR for the development of their Oculus Rift VR headset.
