#15. DRAGON BALL Z: RAGING BLAST 2

Memories of the Raging Blast games often go hand-in-hand wit the very strong feeling that they never quite matched up to the Budokai Tenkaichi games, but viewed on their own, they had their fair share of strengths. Raging Blast 2 in particular had plenty to like, from its strong roster of playable fighters to the explosive fighting mechanics it touted. Frustrating camera controls and the lack of a story mode were certainly major issues, but the game was not without its redeeming qualities.

Developed by CyberConnect2, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the latest adaptation of the late Akira Toriyama’s iconic anime/manga. It follows Son Goku in his adult years, venturing through the Saiyan, Namek, Cell and Buu Sagas. Post-launch DLC covered other story arcs, from the Battle of Gods movie, which introduced Super Saiyan God form, to Goku’s Next Journey, which concluded the Dragon Ball Z storyline.

Neither Bandai Namco nor CyberConnect2 have confirmed what’s next. However, the former will host a Summer Showcase panel during Anime Expo on July 5th, which is “heavy with announcements, reveals, and first looks at anticipated anime games.” It could announce the next Season Pass, potentially including the Tournament of Power in Dragon Ball Super. The new trailer shows off Goku taking on characters like an older Goten, indicating that the game takes place close to the events that would mark the end of the Dragon Ball franchise. The trailer shows off a full fight between a level 114 Goku and level 114 Goten, with both characters showcasing their various abilities.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – Goku’s Next Journey is the third and final DLC part of the game’s Season Pass 2. It follows the release of Bardock – Alone Against Fate, as well as 23rd World Tournament. The DLC doesn’t yet have a solid release date aside from a February 2024 window.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and all of its DLCs are available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – Goku’s Next Journey is the third and final DLC part of the game’s Season Pass 2, following Bardock – Alone Against Fate and the 23rd World Tournament DLCs. Goku’s Next Journey doesn’t yet have a release date aside from a February window.

The previous DLC release for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was the 23rd World Tournament, which came out back in August 2023. As its name would imply, the DLC saw Goku and his friends take part in the titular tournament. The DLC offered up some twists on the game’s standard combat formula by restricting flight, as well as providing players with the option to Ring Out their opponents.

Before that, we saw the Bardock – Alone Against Fate DLC, which acts as a prequel to the entirety of Dragon Ball, telling the story of Goku’s father and the destruction of the Saiyan’s home planet.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

While Goku may be friends with Tien Shinhan and other fighters, he and Piccolo (going by Ma Junior) are at odds. The 23rd World Tournament also introduces some interesting twists on the typical superpowered battles. The lack of flying means running and dodging on the ground are more important, and you can Ring Out an opponent.

When knocked down, the player must answer the five count to continue. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – The 23rd World Tournament will be available for PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. It can be purchased standalone for those who don’t own Season Pass 2. One more DLC remains, so stay tuned for reveals in the coming months.

Fights in the World Tournament have “unique rules.” Since you can’t fly, running, dodging and jumping are slightly different here. It makes dodging enemy projectiles more challenging. However, your opponent follows the same rules and highly damaging attacks can cause Ring Outs. Another nice touch is that going down doesn’t mean you’re out if you answer the five count in time.

Along with Piccolo (aka Ma Junior), Goku also goes up against Tien Shinhan, who can use Multi-Form to create duplicates that attack at once. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot – The 23rd World Tournament DLC doesn’t have a release date, but it’s coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Other titles include Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Haven, Life is Strange: True Colors, Rainbow Six Extraction and Tchia on PS4 and PS5. PS4 players also get Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Life is Strange 2, NEO: The World Ends with You, RAGE 2, Street Fighter 5 Champion Edition, and Untitled Goose Game. Of course, these are all playable on PS5, thanks to backward compatibility.

For Premium subscribers, Ape Escape 2 and Ridge Racer Type 4 for PlayStation One are coming along with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror from the PlayStation Portable era. The latter benefits from up-rendering, quick saving, video filters and a rewind function. Stay tuned for more details when the above titles go live next week.

However, it’s renowned for the battle between Piccolo (aka Ma Junior) and Goku, all grown-up and ready to compete. Not to spoil the winner, but the finale is so over-the-top that the stadium would later need rebuilding due to the sheer destruction.

While a showdown with Frieza is a given, players can battle hordes of his henchmen in massive battles. There will also be new locations like Planet Vegeta. As the first of three DLC in Season Pass 2, Bardock – Alone Against Fate launches on January 13th. It coincides with the base game’s release for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S with improved visuals on both platforms.

Interestingly, the trailer also seems to confirm the next DLC’s setting, which was rumored to be the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai Saga in the original Dragon Ball. It was the same arc that saw Goku battle Piccolo Jr. when they were both still enemies. Stay tuned for more details on the same in the coming months.

According to Dragon Ball insider Hype, the next major DLC for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will take use back to the final story arc of the original Dragon Ball, and will be based on the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai story arc.

Essentially the final story arc for the Dragon Ball anime and manga before it shifts its story into the events of Dragon Ball Z, the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai arc revolves around the titular martial arts tournament. Its main event is the final fight between series protagonist Goku and at-the-time antagonist Piccolo Jr.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will be seeing the release of Bardock – Alone Against Fate on January 13. The DLC focuses on the story of Goku’s father and his hopeless fight against the forces of Frieza during the events that lead to the destruction of Planet Vegeta.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and its DLCs are available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This month will also see the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game.
