The Japan-only free to play title will halt client downloads and purchases on July 11th.

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma series has been an interesting property to observe. However, Dragon’s Dogma Online, a free to play version of the franchise that was announced in 2015, has been the most interesting. It never came to the West and it’s time in Japan is seemingly up. According to Capcom, services for Dragon’s Dogma Online will be shutting down on December 5th.

The company has tried to continue running the game but has faced difficulties in providing the best service. Downloading the client and purchasing content won’t be possible past July 11th. Current players can still login and enjoy the title until it shuts down in December.

Dragon’s Dogma Online was first announced in January 2015 for PS4, PS3 and PC. It hit one million downloads within the first 10 days of launch but Capcom stated from the outset that it would never release the game in the West. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen faced a revival of sorts when it released for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch over the years. Hopefully, with director Hideaki Itsuno expressing interest in making a sequel, Dragon’s Dogma will continue.

370,000 characters created as of yesterday.

Remember Dragon’s Dogma Online, Capcom’s MMORPG version of its action RPG series? It released in the end of August for Japan and within just 10 days, it’s managed to hit one million downloads on PS3, PS4 and PC with 370,000 characters having been created as of September 9th.

The online title is free to play but supports optional subscriptions, much like The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. There’s also an intriguing “three days adventure pass” initiative (as per DualShockers) which allows players to try a paid subscription option for 72 hours absolutely free. For more information, head here.

Dragon’s Dogma Online created quite the buzz when it was first announced for its large scale worlds and consistent content updates that Capcom promised. It’s currently only available in Japan but one has to wonder if this strong reception in Japan could lead to a Western launch.

Capcom reveals new details about its upcoming online RPG.

Capcom held a recent experience meeting in Tokyo to showcase its various upcoming projects, one of them being the pseudo-MMORPG Dragon’s Dogma: Online which is based off the fairly popular PS3 series. Game director Kent Kinoshita revealed at the meeting that Dragon’s Dogma: Online will be running at 1080p on the PS4 though its frame rate will be an unlocked 60 FPS. The PS3 version will be running at 720p resolution and 30 frames per second.

It should also be noted that PS3, PS4 and PC players can all play with each other on the same servers thanks to the game’s cross-platform support. Eight player multiplayer was also confirmed for the PS4 version and it should be interesting to see how Capcom’s own ten year MMO project will pan out in the coming months despite being limited only to Japan.

What are your thoughts on Dragon’s Dogma: Online? Let us know in the comments below.

Capcom's free to play online RPG won't be heading to the West but it still looks great.

Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma: Online has received a new trailer containing equal parts action and story. It’s in Japanese but that doesn’t mean you can’t admire the game’s visuals and overall presentation.

As a free to play online follow-up to the hit PS3 series, Dragon’s Dogma: Online will allow players to team up in parties and undertake quests, Raids and much more. In-game lobbies will support 100 players and Capcom promises to expand the game significantly after its release. Micro-transactions haven’t been discussed in great detail but they are included.

Sadly, Dragon’s Dogma: Online won’t be heading to North America and Europe. It will be exclusive to Japan for PC, PS3 and PS4. While you should never say never regarding a Western release, it’s clear that Capcom has other plans for the game.

What are your thoughts on it though? Would you like to see Dragon’s Dogma: Online in the West? Let us know in the comments.

It could be worse.

Capcom announced the long awaited and anticipated follow up to their hit RPG from last generation, Dragon’s Dogma, recently, but in true Capcom fashion, they messed it up by announcing it would be a) an MMORPG b) a free to play MMORPG at that, and c) releasing only in Japan.

Talk about raising hopes, then dashing them, running them over with a tank, and then atomizing them with a sledgehammer for good measure.

If, for some reason, however, you still had any interest in the game left at all, well, the good news is we have some gameplay to show you, which you can watch above. It looks… well, it could look worse, and it doesn’t look like a complete bastardization of the game which many feared it would be (though, of course, the true litmus test will be when the game launches, and the balance of monetization versus game design can be weighed against one another).

Capcom's recently revealed free to play MMO is currently for Japan only.

Excited about Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma: Online, which was recently announced today and will combine 100 player lobbies and 4 member parties with the open world and combat mechanics of the franchise that many people have come to love? You might want to put a lid on some of it – there are currently no plans to release the game outside of Japan.

This was revealed by a Capcom UK rep who told Eurogamer that there were no plans for a Western release. To an extent, it’s interesting since there are games like Capcom’s Deep Down which are also online action RPGs that seem to be stuck in Japan. Wouldn’t it be beneficial to bring Dragon’s Dogma: Online to the West, especially given the free to play nature of the game?

Plans could change somewhere down the line but for now, we’ll have to wait and see. Dragon’s Dogma: Online is currently planned for release on PS3, PS4 and PC.

Free to play MMORPG revealed, features 100 person lobbies.

After initial rumours, Capcom finally confirmed Dragon’s Dogma: Online, a free to play MMORPG with micro-transactions that will support 100 player lobbies.

The setting, world and story will be new but the gameplay will be similar to previous Dragon’s Dogma titles. Players can group up in 4 player parties (or have AI pawns with them) and there will be lobbies to chat and recruit other team members. Quick matching is supported and Capcom promises seasonal updates that will make the world 3 times as large as the original size.

Players will have extensive character creation and can choose classes like fighter, hunter, priest and more. There will also be events, much like raids, that can support up to 8 players. The gameplay will apparently be similar to Guild Wars and Phantasy Star Online in terms of MMO mechanics.

Remember how we told you, some time ago, that Capcom had registered a trademark for Dragon’s Dogma Online in Europe, which was hinting at the possibility of the RPG IP returning in a big way, possibly as some sort of MMO? Well, where there is smoke, there is fire, and right now, we are seeing more smoke, as Capcom appears to have registered a trademark for Dragon’s Dogma Online not just in Europe, but in Japan and the US as well.

For those of you who were hoping for a real, legitimate next generation sequel to what has been called Capcom’s best game in years, this may come as bittersweet news- it shows that Capcom has definitively not forgotten about the brand, and that it plans on doing something with it.

On the other hand, with a name like Dragon’s Dogma Online, in the best case scenario, it will be an MMORPG, and in the worst case, it will be some sort of free to play mobile garbage. Neither of these are, I suspect, what fans wanted when they said they wanted more of Dragon’s Dogma.
