PC gaming has had a long and illustrious history. Here are some of its best titles, from old-school first-person shooters to today's hits.

PC gaming has come a long way, evolving by leaps and bounds over the decades. New titles came about that changed the way we thought about the medium. More powerful hardware redefined visuals and presentation, even rivaling Hollywood. However, beloved genres endured, with computer role-playing games and strategy titles continuing to be made (and seeing great success).

Nailing down any one aspect of PC gaming is challenging, but it’s that diversity that really makes it shine. Let’s check out the 30 best PC games that have stood out through the decades.

Sons of the Forest

The first rule of playing Sons of the Forest is to experience the original if only to appreciate its story-telling and how things work. Then dive into the sequel and really start to grasp all the different tools that Endnight Games has offered, from solar-powered golf karts and hang-gliders (with launch pads) to an extensive range of firearms, new melee weapons, and mechanics, like AI helpers and a revamped building system. Though its narrative won’t quite hook you, the sheer amount of stuff to do on the island – inhumane and otherwise – provides hours of fun.

These recent single player games offer some amazing boss fights that will stay with you long after the credits roll. And oh, you will find nothing from the Soulsborne genre here.

Everyone loves a good single-player game with dynamic boss fights that are a true test of player skill and mechanical prowess, but recent years haven’t been all that kind to such games with most games falling under this category are restrained to the roguelike or Soulslike genre. But even so, there are quite a few great single-player adventures with entertaining boss fights that have been recently released and today, we will be looking at a few of them:

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village is like a rollercoaster ride that takes the player through different types of horrors. The game’s many different levels feature different kinds of spooks and scares that never fail to keep a player at the edge of their seats, and it’s all punctuated by surprisingly good boss fights – especially when compared to its direct predecessor Resident Evil 7. The fight against Heisenberg is especially bombastic, and so is the rooftop encounter against Lady Dimitrescu. It’s all capped off by a multi-phase boss fight against Mother Miranda, which is an excellent palate cleanser after the arduous journey of Ethan Winters through this village of horrors.

A free update is also now available which brings the One More Fight DLC and other modes to PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

The Game Bakers’ acclaimed hack and slash/bullet hill title Furi is now available for PlayStation 5. Along with this, however, it also released a brand new DLC with Onnamusha. The DLC costs $6.99 and arrives alongside a free patch for all platforms which adds the One More Fight DLC and other previous updates.

In terms of combat, the Onnamusha Rider controls pretty differently. She can adopt the Spark stance for less damage while also gaining the ability to double dash, heal on parry and fill the Star gauge via dodging, parrying and successful hits. Alternatively, the Storm stance provides access to a powerful but slow (and vulnerable) jump roll while also filling the Star gauge slowly.

Upon building up the gauge, she can unleash the Star, a very powerful and quick attack. It’s only available for a limited time though so use it when an opponent is open. The Onnamusha Rider is playable in Story, Practice and Speedrun modes, adding a whole new dimension to the base game.

Along with PS5, Furi is also available for PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, the DLC won’t be coming to Xbox any time soon. Head here to find out why.

Indie developer The Game Bakers opens up about its struggles with Furi and the lack of an Xbox release for its latest DLC.

Developer The Game Bakers’ indie hit Furi recently received new DLC, although it isn’t coming to Xbox platforms. The developer previously said that the decision was made considering the low interest for the game on the Xbox side of things, and now in a recent interview with VICE, they have now opened up about Furi and Xbox Game Pass and elaborated on previous comments.

The Game Bakers praised Xbox Game Pass for providing visibility to indie games, and how the space has seen renewed interest, thanks to so many wonderful releases. But according to the studio’s co-founder and president Audrey Leprince, having so many indie game release on Xbox Game Pass also hurts each game’s visibility by a significant margin.

“Game Pass is such a fantastic platform for players, so there are possibly more Xbox players than ever interested in indie games,” Leprince said. “Unfortunately, without Game Pass, it is also very hard for many indie games to be visible on Xbox.”

This was then further backed by sales figures for Furi, which reveal that only 5% of the total sales came from Xbox. On the PlayStation front, things fared a bit better, with Furi seeing 7% of the total sales on the platform (barring downloads via PlayStation Plus). Suffice to say, the game’s best performing versions on a commercial level were on PC and Nintendo Switch.

The Game Bakers also requested Xbox to put the game on the platform, but because Furi was released all the way back in 2016, putting the game on Xbox Game Pass didn’t align with Microsoft’s strategy of focusing on new game releases. Between this and the already limited budget and manpower for the game (Furi’s engine and art assets were updated on all platforms), The Game Bakers ultimately decided to drop support for Furi DLC on Xbox.

“We talked to the team at Xbox to see if there was a way to get some support, but Furi didn’t align with the Game Pass strategy focused on new titles,” Leprince said. “This is why we took the decision not to bring the DLC to Xbox at launch: the chances the investment was not going to recoup were high.”

Given how many people have enjoyed (or at least heard about) Furi since its release, it’s rather sad that any potential fans on Xbox will not have access to the DLC at launch. That said, if the DLC performs well enough, The Game Bakers might bring it over to Xbox in the near future. Here’s hoping.

The DLC adds a new character for $6.99. A free update will also bring the One More Fight DLC and other features to PS4, PC, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Despite launching about six years ago, The Game Bakers’ Furi is coming to PS5 and also receiving a new update on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC on May 17th. PS4 players can upgrade to the PS5 version for free while a new paid DLC, Onnamusha, will release on the same day. Check out the trailer below to see it in action.

Costing $6.99, the DLC adds a new character – the Onnamusha Rider – who can fight in two stances (along with harnessing the Star’s power). The first is quicker but the second can dish out more damage at a slower pace. Along with the Story mode, the Onnamusha Rider can be played in Speedrun and Practice modes.

The free update will essentially add the One More Fight DLC and other improvements like Furier Speedrun, alternate controls, accessibility options and Invincible Mode to all platforms for free. As for whether the new paid DLC or free update would be released for Xbox One, the developer told Gematsu that there are no plans at present.

Yes, that's really it for these games, even after everything you've just been through.

It’s always a shame to finish a game, whether it’s a long-winded RPG or a short but sweet first person shooter, only for things to just end. Not all abrupt endings are terrible (see The Last of Us) but some stand out as offering an underwhelming payoff as opposed to a strong emotional finish. Let’s take a look at 15 more of these endings here. Spoilers abound for recent games so you’ve been warned.

RAGE 2

For all intents and purposes, RAGE 2’s story is stupidly simple. You meet the members of Project Dagger, fight General Cross and corrupt him with a virus that prevents more of his clones being made. The virus happens to be lethal to Walker, the protagonist, as well. But lo and behold, his friend Lily saves him, there’s a rendezvous with the Project Dagger members again and…that’s it. It’s not a terrible cliffhanger like RAGE 1 but that’s not saying much.

The tougher they are, the more quickly we ran to the Internet for answers.

Knowing the right strategies to defeat a boss isn’t easy and there’s only so much trial and error you can do before looking it up. That’s the beauty of the Internet – someone, somewhere has figured this fight out and it’s smooth sailing for you. Probably. Let’s take a look at 15 bosses we wouldn’t have easily defeated had it not been for the Internet.

Batman: Arkham City – Mister Freeze

Mister Freeze is easily the best boss fight in the Batman: Arkham series. Using a method to whittle his health down only for him to develop a counter-measure to that on the fly is awesome. However, in New Game Plus, you need to use not one, not two but 11 different methods to ultimately take him down. In that sense, having sources that outline each and every method is just perfect, if for nothing else than saving time from trial and error.

Just when you thought it was all over, there was one more thing.

In video games, having a conclusive ending is important. After all, it’s that final result that the player has been working towards, going from plot twist to plot twist to get there. But sometimes, there’s one last final twist (or several) saved for after the credits. Let’s take a look at 15 such games that did this.

Metal Gear Solid

A climactic battle atop Metal Gear REX, a daring escape while firing at pursuers and Liquid Snake finally dying of FOXDIE – the ending to Metal Gear Solid is over-the-top in all the best ways. Meryl and Snake ride off into the sunset and the credits roll…but afterwards, we’re treated to Revolver Ocelot speaking to who else but the President of the United States. Not only was Ocelot a double agent but the President is none other than Solidus Snake, the third clone of Big Boss. It only gets weirder in Metal Gear Solid 2.

The good guys don't always win the fight.

Happy endings in video games are far from a given. Sometimes, the odds you’re up against just don’t turn out in your favour. Either because of the choices you’ve made throughout your playthrough, or because the narrative was always doomed to end badly for the heroes, the good guys, whatever you choose to call them- sometimes, their defeat seems inevitable.

In this feature, we’ll be taking a look at fifteen games where despite all your best efforts (or perhaps because of all your worst ones), the villains ended up coming out victorious.

Obviously, there will be spoilers ahead for every game on this list. If you see us mention a game you don’t want spoiled, skip ahead to the next entry.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION

Red Dead Redemption saw John Marston fighting with all he had to escape the cycle of violence that his life had been caught in since he had been taken in by Dutch van der Linde as a boy, but we all saw how that turne out. Things kept spiralling out of control, and Marston’s past came back to bite him with the deplorable Agent Ross marching down on his ranch with a posse an tearing him apart with a barrage of gunfire. Jack would go on to avenge his father and kill Ross, but in doing so, he also ended up entering the life his father had tried so hard to keep him out of.

Experience the game's narrative or practice different boss battles with no stress.

Hack and slash/bullet hell shoot ’em up Furi has received an interesting new update on all platforms. The Freedom Update is, well, free and introduces a new Invincible Mode. This allows players to ignore much of the game’s difficulty and enjoy the narrative (not to mention the snazzy visuals and soundtrack).

Check out the latest trailer for Furi below… which doesn’t really show off Invincible Mode, but provides a nice look at the gameplay. Of course, the other benefit of Invincible Mode is that it allows speed-runners to practice different encounters. Bug fixes and an alternate control scheme are also included with the update.

The Game Bakers is currently busy with its next title, Haven. The adventure RPG can be played either solo or in co-op and focuses on a couple who have escaped to another planet to be together. Haven is slated to release in 2020 for consoles and PC. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
