These include Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Kirby Star Allies, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and more.

Leading up to the official launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 later this week, the company has started releasing updates for some of the games that were originally released on the Switch in order to give the titles better performance and compatibility when played on the Switch 2. As caught by IGN, the games that have gotten these updates range from Switch 2 Edition upgrades to older titles that can still benefit from improved hardware.

Some of the games getting these updates are The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (version 1.4.0), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (version 1.8.0), Pikmin 3 Deluxe (version 1.1.2), Super Mario Bros. Wonder (version 1.0.2), Kirby’s Dream Buffet (version 1.0.0a), Kirby Star Allies (version 4.0.0a), Super Mario 3D All-Stars (version 1.1.2), Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (version 2.2.1), Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain (version 1.2.0), and ARMS (version 5.51), among others.

All of these updates revolve around giving these games improved performance for the new console over how they ran on the original Switch. Along with performance boosts, quite a few games are also getting access to new features, including GameShare and even support for HDR displays.

The Switch 2 will be hitting store shelves on June 5.

Free Switch 2 upgrades have also been confirmed for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and more.

A handful of major first-party Nintendo Switch titles are set to get paid native versions for the upcoming Switch 2, but several others will also be getting upgrades of their own. Enhancements for these titles will be smaller in scale, though they will be free, unlike the aforementioned exorbitantly priced ones, so there’s that.

Nintendo has revealed that Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe will all receive such free Switch 2 enhancements. Super Mario Odyssey will add HDR support on the next-gen console, in addition to visual optimizations and improved picture quality, as well as GameShare support. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will offer the same enhancements, though Bowser’s Fury will be the only one to add HDR support. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, meanwhile, promises improved picture quality on the Switch 2.

Additionally, Nintendo confirms that similar free Switch 2 upgrades will also be released for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, ARMS, Game Garage Builder, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, and Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain.

Free Switch 2 enhancements are also headed on the console’s launch day for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Link’s Awakening.

These updates "may" include performance improvements or features like the recently announced GameShare when playing on the Switch 2.

As teased before the Direct, various Nintendo Switch titles will receive dedicated Switch 2 Editions. These include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Super Mario Party Jamboree. However, Nintendo has also confirmed free updates for various other Switch 1 titles to “improve” their playability on the Switch 2.

The list is as follows:

ARMS

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Game Builder Garage

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Pokémon Scarlet/Violet

Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain

The updates in question “may” improve performance or implement GameShare, but as Nintendo notes, the content varies from game to game. So if the fidelity of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet isn’t up to snuff, try not to be too disappointed.

Of course, it’s possible that Nintendo could release updates for additional titles in the future. Time will tell, so stay tuned.

The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives on June 5th for $449.99. Launch titles include Mario Kart World (which costs an eye-watering $79.99 digitally), Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, and much more.

Along with announcing that the Nintendo Switch had sold over 100 million units till date, Nintendo also offered updated sales numbers on several titles. This includes newer games like Metroid Dread, which has sold 2.74 million copies as of December 31st 2021. That’s not bad, considering it launched on October 8th and is the first major title in the series since Metroid: Samus Returns from 2017.

Mario Party Superstars performed very well, as expected, with 5.43 million sales since its October 29th launch. The other new title released in the quarter was Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain with 1.28 million sales since launching on December 3rd. Game Builder Garage managed to sell 1.01 million units while WarioWare: Get It Together!, which launched in September 2021, hit 1.24 million sales.

Other noteworthy numbers include Luigi’s Mansion 3 at 11.04 million sales; Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury selling 8.85 million units; The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD at 3.85 million sales; New Pokemon Snap at 2.36 million sales; Mario Golf: Super Rush at 2.26 million units sold; and Miitopia at 1.63 million sales.
While previously the creation toolkit's physical release was limited to North America, soon, those in Europe will be able to purchase it at retail as well.

Part kid-friendly programming toolkit, part game, Game Builder Garage launched for the Switch a little over a month ago worldwide, but Nintendo didn’t release the game in complete capacity all over the world. While in North America it was released both physically and digitally, in Europe, the former was not part of the plan. That will be changing soon, thankfully.

Nintendo of Europe’s official Twitter page has confirmed that Game Builder Garage is getting a physical release in the region on September 10. There’s no word yet on what the pricing will be, but one would assume it’ll be the same as the digital version.

It’s interesting that a first part exclusive is getting a delayed physical launch, which is something that we usually see with indies. It’s entirely likely that Game Builder Garage has sold better than Nintendo’s Europe division had anticipated, which has compelled them to give the game a retail launch as well. Either way, it’s good to see.

The first entry in Nintendo's new interview series, known as Ask the Developer, focuses on the recent Game Builder Garage.

Sometimes, Nintendo does really charming things, and they don’t necessarily have to be games. Case and point: Iwata Asks, the interview series in which the late president of Nintendo and game industry legend, Satoru Iwata, would interview Nintendo developers about their games or Nintendo’s hardware. The series stopped following Iwata’s untimely passing in 2015, but it was a good idea and always shed some light on how Nintendo and its developers approach the art of making games.

Apparently, Nintendo thought so, too, because the company has recently revived the series under a new title: Ask a Developer. The new series kicks off with an interview with Nintendo EPD’s Kosuke Teshima and Naoki Masuda focused on their most recent game: Game Builder Garage, a game that teaches players how to make games and allows them to make their own titles, to boot. As before, interviews were conducted in Japanese and then translated into English.

Game Builder Garage, it turns out, was inspired by Toy-Con Garage, a VR portion of the Nintendo Labo: VR Kit. Masuda and Teshima noticed that a lot of players and developers were enjoying using Toy-Con Garage to develop their own games, but they’d often get stuck if they didn’t have proper programming knowledge. At that point, Masuda realized “that we might be able to expand that fun if we had a system that provides guidance on how to create games using Toy-Con Garage, making it more approachable for players,” and Game Builder Garage was born.

The entire interview is both lengthy and fascinating, and a must-read for anyone interested in Nintendo or game design. It evokes the best parts of the Iwata Asks series, which Nintendo has archived for those interested, and which was also partially collected in a book about Iwata’s life called Ask Iwata. Hopefully, Ask a Developer will continue to honor that legacy, and run for a long, long time.

Learn how to make games in Game Builder Garage.

Game creation is a complicated process, to say the very least, which is why not anyone can just wake up one morning, decide they’re going to make a game, and then actually do it with little to no challenges. Well, Nintendo is going to try and help you do just that. They’ve announced Game Builder Garage, a game creation, well, game, that will look to simplify the act of making a game. Check out its launch trailer below.

Of course, it’s going to be quite simplified, and it remains to be seen exactly how expressive, deep, and flexible its creation toolset is going to be. It’s probably not going to be on the same level of Dreams, of course, but if Nintendo’s past creation efforts with Super Mario Maker have taught us anything, it’s that the combination of accessibility and simplicity can allow you to do a lot even with limited creation toolsets.

Game Builder Garage launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on June 11. It’s available for pre-orders right now. The game will cost $29.99.
