Sony showed off plenty of gameplay footage for their upcoming game, God of War: Ascension. The video showed Kratos in a city on the edge of the sea.

The demo showed off some typical, brutal GoW combat, new moves and finishers, new enemy types (including a monster with an elephant’s head), and of course, a lot of blood and brutality, something we’ve all come to associate God of War with.

Kratos also has some pretty useful magical moves in his arsenal now, like stomping his blades on the ground and sending out a wave of energy to knock enemies off. He also slowed down time to restore some fallen structures.

The platforming in GoW: Ascension looks very smooth, and Kratos is apparently a lot more nimble now (strange, because this is a prequel). There was also a boss battle with a Kraken.

By the looks of it, Kratos can also pick up fallen weapons off the ground randomly and use the temporarily. The game certainly looks very good. Watch the full demo above.

Sony confirmed that God of War: Ascension will be out on the PS3 on March 12, 2013.

Stay tuned for more updates.

The God of War franchise has always been known for its strong single player campaigns, with their excellent boss fights and engrossing storylines. But after Sony Santa Monica revealed yesterday that God of War: Ascension will have a multiplayer mode, people (understandably) freaked out. With franchises like Mass Effect and Dead Space recently having made the unthinkable jump to multiplayer, it wasn’t a big shock to find out that God of War was doing the same. But there was one tiny difference- when we came to think of it, multiplayer actually made sense in both those series (even though the online component of Dead Space is terrible). But how do you fit multiplayer in a series like God of War?

I had some of the same doubts, but after Sony revealed some multiplayer screenshots and we even got to see it in action, my doubts vanished. I can now safely say that I think multiplayer will work very well in the upcoming GoW prequel. Why, you say? Here’s why-

Santa Monica is doing it in a way that fits with the nature of the series

If you’ve read the details and seen the video (both linked above), both of which shed some light on what the multiplayer in God of War: Ascension will be like, then you probably know that Santa Monica Studios won’t just be giving us a typical team deathmatch or capture the flag affair (they couldn’t even if they wanted to… I mean, how do you do that in God of War?). The gameplay seems to be keeping true to the nature and spirit of the series, and it doesn’t seem like the devs are deviating too much from what makes the action so good.

If anyone can do something so crazy, it’s Sony Santa Monica

Sure, BioWare managed to implement multiplayer in Mass Effect in a way that made sense, and sure, 343 Industries might be radically overhauling the multiplayer of Halo, but none of those tasks are anywhere near as crazy as implementing competitive multiplayer in a God of War game. I mean, co-op would have made a ton of sense, especially if the game focusses on Kratos and his brother, but since that isn’t the case, this seems like an especially monumental task. But it’s Sony Santa Monica! They’ve proven over the years that they have what it takes to do the impossible and defy all conventions. So let’s wait and watch.

The multiplayer bosses are going to be awesome

God of War is known, first and foremost, for its brutality and the super-angry Kratos, of course. But something else it’s particularly popular because of are the epic, mind blowing, large scale boss battles. From the Minotaur and Hydra in God of War 1 to the Colossus and Kraken in God of War 2 to Cronos and Posiedon in God of War 3 and the Scylla and the Persian king in Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus respectively, every boss battle in the God of War series is something exceptional. Learning the fact that the multiplayer in GoW: Ascension will be centred around similar awesome boss battles made me giddy as a schoolboy. Who doesn’t love boss battles in GoW games?

Sony may have revealed some pretty good looking multiplayer details and screenshots for God of War: Ascension earlier today, but fear not, fans of the series- Sony has not forgotten that God of War is, first and foremost, a single player details. They’ve now given a few tidbits regarding the single player campaign of the game.

As many of guessed after seeing the debut trailer for the game, the game is set before all other GoW games, becoming the first chronological game in Kratos’ timeline. It is set six months after Ares tricks Kratos into killing his wife and child and sees the protagonist vying for his revenge on the titular antagonist and his own redemption.

“God of War: Ascension is a prequel that will show Kratos’ emotional path of redemption, while detailing the rise of his rage to break free from Ares’ bond,” Sony said.

“Six months after being tricked into killing his wife and child, a younger Kratos is sentenced to a life of madness with the Furies, caged in a titan sized prison for the living damned,” they continued. “Fighting insanity, his will is tested to the limit as he seeks to break his bond and gain the clarity to seek revenge on Ares for his part in the death of his family.

“Armed with double-chained blades, Kratos must take on mythology’s darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest for redemption.”

So, Kratos is armed with the Blades of Chaos, contrary to what many were expecting. And thank god for that. Those blades are awesome.

SSM also said that they didn’t name Ascension God of War 4 because they wanted to make it clear that it’s a prequel and that fans can start fresh with it, without playing the first three games.

The game is built on GoW3’s engine, but will offer better textures, lighting and better visuals all around. Kratos’ character is also supposed to be much less angry than usual, given the fact that this is a prequel.

Being the manic fans of the series that we are, these details obviously aren’t enough for us. But we’re gonna have to make do for now. Sony probably will reveal a lot more in the coming days, especially during E3, so stay tuned.

And now we have some screens to show to you just what the game will look like while you play it with your friends.

The screens above show a map that looks an awful lot like the Isle of Fate from God of War II, and if the arena shown in the screens above is anything to go by, the map sizes in Ascension will be considerably big.

Also, the boss in the background looks badass, so we can expect the bosses in Ascension, in typical God of War fashion, to be awesome as well.

You can watch the reveal trailer of the game here.
David Jaffe, creator of the first God of War game, earlier said he wants GoW: Ascension to be like a bloody Zelda game.

Ahead of the upcoming live stream, Sony has revealed that God of War: Ascension will have a multiplayer component, becoming the first game in the God of War series to do so, as was confirmed to USA Today.

The multiplayer will have 8 players battling it out against each other, as the two teams battle each other while trying to bring down a big-ass boss. In the beginning, you create your own Spartan warrior with an option to worship one of the following gods: Zeus, Poseidon, Hades or Aries. Obviously, each god will grant you specific powers, weapons, armours etc. You will rank up and gain EXP points as the game progresses.

Each player gets the Blades of Chaos and an assortment of various hammers, spears, swords and more.

USA Today was shown the Domination mode, while two teams tried to be the first to bring down a huge cyclops boss to gain access to the Spear of Olympus, as the camera zoomed in to individual “visceral battles.”

“In one, two warriors who look like cousins of Kratos disembowel an enemy and his innards flow out. Later, one combatant cleaves an opponent in half from head to thorax,” describes USA Today.

“Eventually, the dominating team turns their attention to the Cyclops, attach some chains to restrain it and one leaps to put out its eye. ‘The whole idea behind it is that we want to bring the big moments to multiplayer,’ game director Todd Papy said after the demonstration.” Kratos is not playable in the online component.

My, oh my, this sounds so awesome and so in the spirit of God of War. Hopefully (and probably), Santa Monica can pull this off.

While no single player details were revealed as of yet, SOny promises a “a revamped combat system”.

Stay tuned for more details.

David Jaffe, the director of the first God of War game and conceptualizer of the series, has revealed some of the ideas he has in mind for the upcoming and recently announced God of War: Ascension. Some of them are actually pretty good- he wants the game to feature a significant co-op mode, and most importantly, he wants it to be structured like Zelda, but with all the typical God of War violence.

“[I’d] bring in different myths, add a very robust and meaningful co-star (I think lots and lots can be done story wise with co-op play), and look to the Zelda structure as a jumping off point,” he said while in an interview with magazine GamesTM (via NowGamer). “Hyper violent Legend of Zelda? Yes please!”

“That could be cool. I could see that working,” he said about the co-op mode. “I’d love to see player one be Kratos and player two be this stupid annoying sidekick that – for some to be determined story reason – Kratos is stuck with for the whole adventure and in the end, once the main quest is over, Kratos just snaps the poor kid’s neck.”

Sounds like Kratos.

We don’t have any details on Ascension right now, apart from the fact that it’s a prequel to all GoW games. But Sony’s holding a live stream solely for the game on April 30, so that’s all about to change.

Here is what we think Ascension should have to be an awesome game, maybe even better than the excellent God of War 3.

Stay tuned.
