Liberty City is a big, scary place so having some extra cash can help. Check out all of the different ways to quickly earn money here.

If there’s one thing that nearly every Grand Theft Auto player needs, it’s more money (in-game, that is). This is no exception in the older titles and with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition allowing fans to revisit the likes of Grand Theft Auto 3, questions about quickly earning the most money are coming up again. While the early going doesn’t offer much in terms of pay, it does get better upon progressing through the campaign.

The first and most obvious way is by taking on some of the different activities like vigilantism, taxi driving, paramedic or firefighting. Simply find the vehicle in question (taxi cabs, police cars, ambulances and fire trucks) and activate the mission to begin. Depending on the number of missions completed at a single time, the amount of cash earned is multiplied. Firefighting is unquestionably the most potent. Put out 20 or so fires and you’ll have amassed more than $50,000, and that number increases exponentially as you put out more.

Next are Import/Export missions which involve stealing cars and delivering them to illicit garages for money. Two such garages are located in the Portland Docks while one can be found in Pine Creek in Shoreside Vale. The Portland Docks garages accept two kinds of vehicles – Civilian and Emergency – granting $1000 and $1500 respectively for each obtained. If you complete their respective lists, then you’ll earn a cool $200,000 each as a reward.

Here’s the Civilian car list for Portland Docks:

Blista

Flatbed

Patriot

Linerunner

Moonbeam

Bus

Coach

Mule

Rumpo

Bobcat

Dodo

Mr. Whoopee

Securicar

Trashmaster

Yankee

Pony

Here are all of the Emergency vehicles that need to be collected for the Portland Docks garage. It’s worth noting that upon obtaining the last Emergency vehicle, you’ll receive $200,000 but won’t get $1,500 separately for the last vehicle.

Police Car

Ambulance

Rhino

Fire Truck

Barracks OL

FBI Car

Enforcer

Finally, here are all of the vehicles that the Shoreside Vale garage requires. It’s recommended to complete this first since the vehicles in question are much easier to obtain.

Banshee

Taxi

Idaho

Stallion

Perennial

Infernus

Sentinel

Kuruma

Stretch

Cheetah

Esperanto

Landstalker

Stinger

Manana

BF Injection

Cabbie

For details on the locations of all vehicles, check out the walkthrough below by GTA Series Videos.

Those sticking primarily to the campaign will find plenty of missions that offer good payouts in the latter half of the game. Donald Love offers six story missions that pay out over $200,000 in total while Asuka Kasen’s three missions provide $120,000 overall. Finish the final story mission “The Exchange” and that’s a cool $1,000,000 earned. Considering that Grand Theft Auto 3’s story doesn’t take too long to complete (at least compared to other entries), it’s not a bad idea to clean up the story first and then focus on side missions in one’s playthrough.

Grand Theft Auto 3: The Definitive Edition is available for Xbox One, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch as part of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. If The Definitive Edition trilogy doesn’t float your boat, then you’ll be able to pick up the previous versions on the Rockstar Store in a bundle for free.

We compared the GTA 3 remaster to the original across a number of different scenarios- here's what we found.

A game as unbelievably influential as GTA 3 should have had a remaster for the ages, and it’s more than a little disappointing that Rockstar didn’t understand that. For whatever reason, in more than a few ways, the GTA 3 remaster – like the other two remasters it comes packaged with – feels like a step back from the original classic. We ran several tests across a number of scenarios in the game to see how much truth there is to that, and here’s what we found.

RAIN EFFECTS

At this point, the botched rain effects have become the poster child of the messed up state that the GTA trilogy has launched in, so it makes sense to start with this. The blinding rain effects (which feel more like a rain filter plastered on the screen) are a problem in all three games, but in GTA 3 in particular, it’s basically impossible to drive around when it’s raining out, especially at nighttime.

LITTER

The original GTA 3 did a number of things, big and small, to really sell its version of a fictional representation of NYC. For instance, scattered on the ground and roads everywhere in the city you could see a bunch of litter and old newspapers. That isn’t the case in the remaster. Sadly, everything just looks cleaner, which takes away from the game’s atmosphere in a surprisingly noticeable way.

FOG AND DRAW DISTANCES

No longer constrained by limited hardware the way the original games were on the PS2, the GTA 3 remaster doesn’t have to resort to blanketing its world in fog to make up for its limited draw distances, which are significantly better here. That said, these are small maps by current standards, especially the one found in GTA 3, so having enough draw distances to be able to see the entire map on your screen is a little strange. It makes the world feel smaller than it should.

VEHICLE EXPLOSIONS

At least where the visuals are concerned, the GTA 3 remaster (along with the other two) showcases meaningful improvements over the original. That’s true of vehicle explosions as well. The explosions themselves look much better defined and, well, explosion-y, while being able to see chunks of a mangled vehicle fly off in much greater detail is also a nice touch.

FIRE EFFECTS

Even beyond the vehicle explosions, fire effects in general look pretty good in the GTA 3 remaster. As opposed to the wispy and sort of gaseous looking flames of the original, fire has a much better visual presence in the remaster. In fact, you can also see flames leaving behind scorch marks on the ground, which wasn’t the case in the original game.

CAR WINDOWS

This is one area where GTA 3 is unchanged from the original, which is disappointing in its own way. Shooting at car windows basically does nothing- or not what you would expect, at least. The game just registers it as a hit like it would on any other part of the vehicle’s body, and you can’t break individual panes of glass on cars.

SHOOTING OUT TIRES

Similar to windows, vehicles’ tires in GTA 3’s remaster are also read by the game as any other part of the car’s body, just as they were in the original. You can’t shoot out tires and make them pop, which is a bit of a bummer, because that is, of course, something that became a staple in the GTA games later on, and it’s disappointing that the remaster didn’t add that in.

SHOOTING AT GLASS

This, too, is another area where the GTA 3 remaster is essentially unchanged from the original- though we’re actually happy about that in this case. Shooting a gun at a breakable window (not on a vehicle though, as mentioned earlier) will see the glass shattering and sending shards flying out. The animation still looks good, which is a relief particularly because, weirdly enough, the animations for shattered glass in the Vice City and San Andreas remasters are significantly worse than their original counterparts.

SHOOTING AT WATER

This was one of the more basic improvements you would have expected to see in the GTA 3 remaster, and thankfully, in this area, it doesn’t disappoint. Firing a gun at a body of water in the original game was basically indistinguishable from shooting at thing air, but in the remaster, you get proper splashes and ripple effects when bullets hit the water.

UNDERWATER EXPLOSIONS

Sadly, water doesn’t react properly to all weapons. In fact, it doesn’t react at all if you throw a grenade in. Just as it as in the original, a grenade will explode underwater in the GTA 3 remaster just as it would anywhere else. You can even see fire and smoke coming out of the water, which is quite strange to look at.

SHOOTING AT TREES

The GTA 3 remaster does exhibit surprising attention to detail in some areas, for all of its faults. For instance, shooting bullets at trees in the original yielded essentially no results, which wasn’t surprising for a game that launched back in 2001. In the remaster, however, you can see your bullets leaving behind bullet holes in trees.

PLANE HITBOXES

Flying vehicles were almost entirely missing in the original GTA 3 (with the exception of the Dodo), which meant that Rockstar, for understandable reasons, didn’t feel the need to work on their hitboxes or what have you. That hasn’t changed in the remaster either. You can go stand in front of a plane on a runway that’s about to take off, and it’ll pass right through you like it were made of gas.

ROOFTOPS

Since flying vehicles weren’t something GTA 3 had to deal with, the game didn’t pay a lot of attention to higher altitude locations in Liberty City- in particular, we’re talking about the rooftops of skyscrapers, which had invisible surfaces that players could walk on if you somehow managed to get there. The remaster doesn’t fix that, and you can still essentially walk on air if you get to the top of a skyscraper.

BLOODY FOOTPRINTS

GTA 3 exhibited shocking attention to detail for its time when the game first came out. One example of that was being able to walk through a puddle of blood and actually leaving behind bloody footprints on the ground. The remaster, thankfully, doesn’t mess with that. In fact, the footprints actually stick around far longer, and are much more detailed.

AIMING WEAPONS AT NPCs

This, thankfully, is another area where the GTA 3 remaster does make expected improvements. NPCs in the original GTA 3 basically didn’t react at all even if you pulled out a weapon and pointed it right in their faces, though that is no longer the case in the remaster. Of course, this is something Rockstar fixed in the Vice City remaster as well, so it’s not surprising to see.

From highly anticipated to reviled in just a few days, Rockstar's "definitive editions" for its classics have left much to be desired.

Following months of rumors and then weeks of hype, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition was released. It’s easy to see why so many people were excited – these were remasters of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, three of the most beloved games of all time. Even if the “definitive edition” moniker is a catch-all term these days, it’s usage seemed to indicate that these would be the very best versions of each game.

Of course, several days before release, there were numerous concerns. Why hadn’t Rockstar, or the actual developer Grove Street Games, showcased any extensive gameplay footage? Why hadn’t we seen improvements like the Grand Theft Auto 5-style control scheme in action? The trilogy was already receiving a bit of backlash for its aesthetic, which leaned more into a cartoony 3D style than photo-realism, so there was already some skepticism.

Sure enough, we wouldn’t get any real comparison footage until the trilogy was actually released. And by that, we mean “released on consoles.” If you were one of the unlucky few to buy it on PC, then Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – arguably one of the most anticipated remastered collections in years – was unplayable at launch. This is due to the Rockstar Games Launcher going down for maintenance. So if you spent $60 on this, sight-unseen or not, then you couldn’t play it for more than a day after launch. But wait, there’s more.

Eventually, the Rockstar Games Launcher did come back online but the GTA Trilogy was made unavailable to play or purchase due to “files unintentionally included” in the same. These “unintentionally included” files were discovered by dataminers to be comments by the developer and several unlicensed songs. The comments are whatever but these were songs that were supposedly removed due to licensing issues. Instead, they were actually just disabled. While they can’t be accessed by your average player, it’s still not a good look.

Keep in mind that all of this is just with the PC version of the game. The console versions have been knocked for performance issues, including frame rate drops on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (don’t even get us started on the Switch version). While the environments have been praised, character models have seen better days whether it’s in strangely shaped shoulders, odd fingernails or faces that are completely different from the original games. Then there’s the oppressive rain in GTA: San Andreas, misspellings galore, glitches, broken textures, the list goes on.

Rockstar has already begun the process of issuing refunds for the PC version and Grove Street Games has already promised updates while also stating that it was “enjoying this unparalleled level of scrutiny.” While comparisons have been made to Cyberpunk 2077 and its disastrous launch, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition isn’t quite there. These games, at their core, are still classics and fans are enjoying what they can. But the fact that a project with the Rockstar Games label – which last adorned Red Dead Redemption 2, lest we forget – and which has been a dream for many a fan has come out in this state is just downright confounding.

What the hell happened? How did the developers fumble this so epically? Many have pointed to the fact that Grove Street Games was originally War Drum Studios. It’s known for developing the 10th Anniversary Editions of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City along with bringing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to iOS, Android, Xbox 360 and PS3. Those ports were dubious for not only making unwanted changes to the visuals but also having performance issues and bugs (which is interesting given how positively received San Andreas was on iOS).

One could easily point to Grove Street Games and blame them for everything but things are often more complicated than they seem. How long the remastered trilogy was in development, the budget allocated to the team, the effect of current events on the development pipeline – all of these things are to be taken into account. But how much of a role did Rockstar play? What was Rockstar mandated and what wasn’t? Did it make the decision to go with this new art-style because it didn’t want to shell out the cash and resources for full remakes? Were remakes initially planned and then reduced in scope due to the amount of resources required?

It’s hard to say but given how Take Two Interactive has been taking down fan remakes and mods over the years – and how it’s already begun doing the same for Grand Theft Auto 4 – it’s hard to believe that there isn’t some agenda at play to cut corners while reaping in the most profit possible. Besides, at the end of the day, it’s Rockstar and Take Two that decide how to market the game. They made the decision to not show any extensive gameplay footage or comparisons until launch.

They also made the decision to price this trilogy at $60 while removing the original versions from sale on digital storefronts. Rockstar even made the decision to not have any pre-loading for the PC version. It’s almost as if this was to prevent anyone from getting their hands on the incriminating data before launch and causing a stink, thus impacting sales. Why did they think no one would notice after launch? A question for another time.

One could theorize about all of this endlessly and push Rockstar to do better. One could also get angry at Grove Street Games for doing a poor job or curse Take Two Interactive for its money-grubbing ways. They could also try to enjoy the trilogy for what it is and perhaps find some tinge of nostalgia that the 3D Universe provides (warts and all).

But is this whole debacle going to have any major, long-term ramifications for either Rockstar or Take Two? Some fans will be less than eager to jump into the definitive edition of GTA 4 when that’s inevitably announced (based on what rumors say, at least). Yet there will be millions who jump in, no questions asked, just because of the Grand Theft Auto name. And even if that fails, well, don’t worry because the hype cycle can kick off once more when Grand Theft Auto 6 is announced.

That the same thing can happen, year in and year out, regardless of which game or publisher makes headlines is indicative of much bigger problems. Regardless, if you’re going to pick up Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, then either hold off until updates have improved performance or try GTA: San Andreas on Xbox Game Pass to see if it’s your speed. Or you could buy any number of remasters/remakes, to say nothing of all of the great new games that have been released this year. You may not put much of a dent into Take Two’s financials but at least you’ll be having fun.
