With this feature, we will be taking a look at 20 of the best PS3 games of all time - games that have left a long-lasting impact on the generation of gamers.

The PlayStation 3 generation was a major turning point for Sony, marking an era where technical showcases truly began to define what was possible in gaming. It was a time of great innovation when studios took bigger creative risks and entire genres evolved in meaningful ways. From emotionally driven adventures and sprawling open worlds to tight shooters and innovative racers, the PS3 amassed a library that still holds up remarkably well today. To that end, we are counting down 20 of the best PS3 games of all time.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us stands tall as one of the defining experiences of the PS3 era, known for expertly blending survival horror gameplay with deeply humane storytelling. Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic adventure follows Joel and Ellie across a ruined post-apocalyptic America, and the gameplay balances tense stealth encounters with quiet, character-driven moments that keep you glued to the edge of the screen at all times. Combat feels desperate and grounded, emphasizing judicial use of resources and quick thinking. What truly elevates the game, however, is its writing and performances, which help it be relevant to this date.

With this feature, we will be taking a look at some of the games that take the aspect of revenge and use it as a fuel to charge their narratives to a higher emotional degree.

It’s said that revenge is a dish that’s best served cold; and these games embody the spirit of revenge to the fullest. Each game on this list takes the raw emotion of vengeance and transforms it into powerful storytelling that stays with you long after the credits roll. Whether it’s a betrayed warrior seeking justice or a fallen hero fighting fr redemption or a survivor turned predator, these games show the best and worst parts of revenge. To that end, here are 15 of the best revenge fueled games that hit harder than you probably remember.

Tekken 8

The Tekken saga has always been drenched in betrayal that helps it stand outfrom the rest of the crowd, but Tekken 8 pushes that intensity higher than ever. That increase in intensity can be felt across each punch, kick, and slam as these hulking behemoths fight each other to the death. The generational curse of the Mishima family continues, and we find Jin at an interesting crossroads – continuing down the dark path of revenge much like Heihachi or Kayuza, or try to become a better man and break free from the cycle of violence. The fights here carry emotional weight beyond the tournament stage, and that makes this journey a lot more compelling to complete than prior entries in the series.

The former GTA lead writer also spoke about Dutch being his favourite side character thanks to the voice actor's strong performance.

Dan Houser – one of the co-founders of Rockstar Games and the man behind the writing in several of the studio’s most critically-acclaimed games – has revealed that Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist Arthur Morgan is “the best lead character,” that he has written. In an interview with Lex Fridman, Houser also noted that Grand Theft Auto 4 protagonist Niko Bellic might also be right up there alongside Arthur as his best.

“I think he’s the best lead character,” said Houser when asked if Arthur was the best one he had created. “You know, the lead characters are different from the side characters, and I think he’s the most rounded and works the best. Him and Niko are the two I like, you know. They were the two most ambitious. So, for me, it’s always sort of a toss-up, you know?”

As for why he rates Arthur so highly, Houser noted that a lot of it had to do with the work of the art team with different gameplay features like the journal, which featured pencil artwork by Arthur depending on his travels throughout Red Dead Redemption 2.

“The art team did such an amazing job,” he explained. “It was their idea with the journal. The way that all the features worked into Arthur’s character. I thought that was really… he was really rounded, he worked in lots of different ways really well. I loved his flawed relationship with his old girlfriend, things like that.”

When it comes to some of the side characters from throughout Rockstar’s history that Houser had a hand in, he also expressed a liking for Dutch from Red Dead Redemption and its sequel. He credited the voice actor for Dutch – Benjamin Byron Davis – whose performance of the character in the first Red Dead Redemption was praised despite the character’s relatively short amount of dialogue at the time.

“I love Dutch,” said Houser. “It was partly because we wrote a few lines for him for the first game, and the actor did such an amazing job that when he spoke, it just came to me all of their backstory, which I had been playing around with by that point anyway, a little bit in my head, but I knew he was a bigger gangster from then. I sort of saw exactly who he was. He felt like a living character to me.”

Houser has spoken about quite a few topics in the same interview, including the fact that he doesn’t believe a Grand Theft Auto game would work well outside of its home setting of the United States. Reflecting on Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 and London 1961 – expansions for the original Grand Theft Auto, Houser said that they were “pretty cute and fun.” He went on to note that the American setting works better for the GTA franchise because “you need guns, you need these larger-than-life characters,” which would be “really hard to make it work in London or anywhere else.”

Houser also spoke about the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, including the fact that things got tense because it was “behind schedule,” and “over budget.”

If GTA 4 returns to the limelight, it needs to do so with more than a simple port.

We have obviously had quite a bit of Grand Theft Auto 5 over the last decade-plus, from multiple re-releases of the game to, of course, continued and consistent updates what many might call the meat and potatoes of the experience for the vast majority of its lifetime- GTA Online. But go back further in the series’ timeline by just one game, and you arrive at the completely contrasting circumstances of Grand Theft Auto 4. The 2008 open world title was obviously highly acclaimed as well – to the extent that, just like GTA 5, it still stands as one of the best reviewed game of all tine – while it’s also safe to say that it sold a ton of copies as well, even though it could obviously never hope to even come close to GTA 5’s commercial accomplishments. And yet, for all of its critical and commercial successes, once Rockstar Games was done with GTA 4 – which was after two post launch single player expansions, which of course is something that GTA 5 itself never got – Rockstar never looked back at the game again.

Interestingly enough, however, recent rumblings have suggested that that could change at some point in the not too distant future. Known Rockstar Games insider Tez2 recently claimed on the GTA forums that a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S port of Grand Theft Auto 4 has been in the works for roughly a year at this point, and that Rockstar likely intends to release it at some point later this year- which of course means that it will release before Grand Theft Auto 6, which was recently officially delayed to May 2026 (and might not necessarily be done with delays, for all we know). Admittedly, this isn’t the first time we have had rumours or speculation about a re-release of GTA 4, and obviously none of them have ever amounted to anything up to this point- but given Rockstar’s recent history, there is precedent to suggest that GTA 4 could once again see the light of day.

Rockstar has long been in the habit of outright ignoring its past releases, refusing to offer remasters or remakes or anything resembling a re-release even in the face of overwhelming demand. Until not too long ago, the original Red Dead Redemption was a similar case, but with the acclaimed 2010 Wild West epic having been brought to PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch over the last couple of years, it now does feel likelier than it ever has that Rockstar might be looking to do something similar with Grand Theft Auto 4 as well. After all, that is another beloved title from that same era of Rockstar games that hasn’t seen the light of day in ages, which in turn has really ratcheted up the demand for the game to come back that much more. But if Rockstar does indeed decide to do a GTA 4 re-release, our hope is it’ll be much more than a simple port.

One thing most will likely agree on is that the aforementioned Red Dead Redemption re-release should not serve as a yardstick for Rockstar to measure against, because the bar should really be significantly higher. The Red Dead Redemption port really was in almost all ways just a simply and straightforward port. It offered few upgrades, and the ones that it did were negligible at best. The resolution was upscaled, there were some light improvements to the picture quality, the UI saw some minor adjustments here and there- and that was pretty much it. There were no upgrades to the lighting, to the assets or the textures, or anything of note, really. Hell, there wasn’t even a performance mode- even when played on PS4 Pro or on PS5 via backward compatibility, the game remains locked at 30 FPS, which is just a crying shame, to put it mildly. To top it all off, Rockstar decided to price this re-release – which was deemed by many to be a low effort port of a game over a decade old – at a $50 point, which felt unreasonable, to say the least. Thankfully, the package did include the Undead Nightmare expansion for that price, so at least there was no additional fleecing being done on that front.

The point being, of course, that Grand Theft Auto 4’s re-release, if it is indeed on the way, cannot take a similar approach. Looking at what the standard is for a number of high profile remastered releases in the current market, it’s impossible not to have higher expectations from a GTA 4 re-release. Just take a look at something like Ninja Gaiden 2 Black or The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, both of which are remasters that released this year and ended up impressing many with just how significantly upgraded and overhauled they were over the original experiences in spite of only being remasters on paper. Go back a little further, and look at, say, Metroid Prime Remastered, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition, or The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, all of which offered meaningful upgrades and improvements that you didn’t have to squint to even be able to notice. While a Grand Theft Auto 4 re-release doesn’t have to be quite on that same level as far as its upgrades are concerned, with standards and expectations for remasters being higher in general, a low effort port for GTA 4 will be quite a hard pill to swallow by many- as evidenced by the disappointment many felt with the Red Dead port.

Rockstar has tried its hand at actual remastered releases in recent years as well, of course, though that sadly didn’t work too well. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition launched a handful of years ago on modern platforms and, as most would tell you, did an awful job of remastering and modernizing three gaming masterpieces. Though GTA: The Definitive Edition did definitely put in much more of an effort than the Red Dead port did, the effort that it did put in was lackluster, to put it mildly- and our hope is that Grand Theft Auto 4’s purported release for modern platforms will sidestep those errors as well.

The thing with GTA 4 is, of course, that it remains a spectacular game with incredible impressive tech and visuals even today, a ridiculously immersive and authentic urban open world map to lose yourself in, one of the most gripping stories that GTA has ever told, told through who may very well be the series’ best protagonist ever. Grand Theft Auto 4 was an unabashed classic in every sense of the word, so to see it modernized and updated with the right amount of effort and thought put in could be incredibly exciting, not only for returning fans looking to experience Liberty City again, but also for new ones who never played the game when it first came out. Grand Theft Auto 6 will obviously likely up the ante in all those areas by quite some margin when it releases next year, but until then, an enhanced GTA 4 on modern consoles should serve as an excellent appetizer. Here’s hoping that actually does end up happening this time.

A former Rockstar Games developer that has previously worked on Grand Theft Auto 4 has said that the studio should work on a remaster of the game. Responding to social media X users asking him a question about rumours surrounding a GTA 4 remaster, former technical director at the studio Obbe Vermeij said that it should happen, considering other successful remasters in recent times.

“I hadn’t heard those rumours,” posted Vermeij on X. “I think GTA IV should be remastered. It’s a great game and there have been a number of successful remasters recently.” Vermeij also wrote about wanting to see GTA 4 protagonist Niko Bellic return in some form, saying that he is still the best protagonist of the franchise in his opinion.

“I would like to see it updated,” Vermiej responded to a post asking his thoughts. “Niko is still the best protagonist in any GTA game I think.”

Rumours about a remastered release of Grand Theft Auto 4 first started making the rounds all the way back in November 2021. The rumours came in light of the at-the-time recent release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition. At the time, the rumours indicated that the remaster would be released in 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and that it would include the Episodes from Liberty City expansions as a bundle.

However, 2023 is a long time ago when it comes to video game releases, and Rockstar Games has still been quiet on the matter. While smaller rumours kept popping up here and there, they started coming back in earnest this year. A more recent rumour, courtesy of known Rockstar Games insider Tez2, indicated that a port for modern platforms is still in the works.

Taking to the GTA Forums, Tez2 said that Grand Theft Auto 4 is being ported to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and that work on the ports had been going on for more than a year. While the post didn’t reveal too many details, it did indicate that Rockstar might be looking to tide fans of GTA 6 over in light of its recent delay to May 26, 2026 by releasing the GTA 4 port later this year.

The insider also said that the GTA 4 port would be part of a larger plan by Rockstar to also release a remaster of Max Payne 3 down the line. The latter would be released in time with Remedy’s current work on remaking the original Max Payne games.

“Someone at R* hinted at the [GTA] IV port, and by now it should’ve gone up a year in development.+,” he wrote. “We may end up seeing it drop later this year. And it’s one more reason, in addition to existing reasons, the LCPP mod was taken down. If they still follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days, they’ll do an MP3 port after IV. So that is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port.”

Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally released back in 2008 on Xbox 360 and PS3. It has since also been released on PC, where it can still be played on modern systems alongside its Episodes from Liberty City story expansions.

The port has allegedly been in the works for over a year and could drop later this year, supposedly followed by a Max Payne 3 re-release.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is over a year away, but fans of Rockstar Games’ open-world crime series might have something else to look forward to before that. As per known Rockstar insider Tez2, a current-gen port of Grand Theft Auto 4 is in the works.

In a post on GTA Forums, the insider claimed that a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S port of the acclaimed 2008 title has been in the works for over a year at this point and that it could release at some point later this year.

Apparently, the plan behind-the-scenes at Rockstar has been for a while to release a Grand Theft Auto 4 port, followed by a Max Payne 3 remaster to align with the upcoming launch of Remedy Entertainment’s Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake.

“Someone at R* hinted at the [GTA] 4 port, and by now, it should’ve gone up a year in development,” the insider wrote. “We may end up seeing it drop later this year. And it’s one more reason, in addition to others, for the LCPP [Liberty City Preservation Project] mod’s takedown. If they still follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days, they’ll do an Max Payne 3 port after GTA 4. So that is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port.”

Given the fact that Grand Theft Auto 4 hasn’t had a single re-release since its original launch back in 2008 (barring a PC port), a current-gen release would actually be met with great enthusiasm from plenty of series fans. Whether it ends up happening remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates.

With the hype surrounding GTA VI plus GTA: The Trilogy’s semi-recent release, GTA IV’s foray through Liberty City’s grimy suburbs has become an outcast. Granted, most of you have completed Niko Bellic’s rise through LC’s criminal underworld already but take a moment to remember it’s surprisingly emotional story, of Bellic desperately outrunning his past in pursuit of a better life for him and his family. If you’ll allow us to describe it as such, its arguably the most relatable narrative in GTA’s canon.

Some great games simply don't feature engaging boss fights. Here are 10 such examples.

Most games nowadays – games with combat especially – feature some sort of boss fight. A brute force test of player skill, a robust assessment of upgrades and augmentations, a cat-and-mouse encounter against an overpowered foe. However, not all combat-centric games rely on this trope. There are tons of great games out there that had next to no boss fights; distinct, memorable, narratively significant encounters, sure, but not something that can be called a true brute force test.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

There isn’t a heap of enemy variety in Nathan Drake’s first outing in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Mercs and pirate-types aside, the monster-like infected Descendants at least provide a terrifying alternative when they first arrive. Their persistence does start to wain though, but still, the game excels as a piece of cinematic storytelling more than anything, and the Descendants provide a firm narrative backbone to support ultimate final boss Atoq Navarro’s stance that the pathogen which formed the Descendants is far more valuable than any golden treasure. Drake and Navarro’s showdown is more a stand-off than battle; Drake waits for him to reload, edges closer in three movements, a brief bit of hand-to-hand, QTE, done.

Far Cry 2

Yet another excellent game that doesn’t really have a boss battle. It has enemies, of course, some weaker, some stronger, but in a genre where there are at least one or two boss fights, Far Cry 2 stands alone. The assassination of the game’s faction bosses and old lieutenants is rudimentary, with primary antagonist The Jackal – the arms dealer whom your mercenary was originally hired to kill – serving more as a narrative think-piece as the story goes on. He’s someone believed to be bad by profiting from death, but that’s exactly what you do in order to get close to him. A final showdown wouldn’t make sense in this context.

Prey (2017)

Prey (2017) has no boss fights whatsoever. Sure, the substantially dangerous form of Typhon the Nightmare perpetually antagonises the player throughout the game but the fact killing it is optional, either slay or evade, means it can’t be considered a true boss fight. It’ll respawn anyway, whatever you do. The most humungous of all Typhon, the Apex, doesn’t need to be fought in the traditional sense either. There are two ways to kill it: one, self-destruct Talos I, and two, detonate the Coral to destroy the Apex without damaging Talos I. Even central antagonist Walther Dahl doesn’t need to be killed, with distinct outcomes depending on whether you choose to kill or stun him.

Deus Ex

In Deus Ex, you will engage enemies on the elite side of difficulty but the game’s usual fayre of tactical, first-person combat involving stealth, cover, and hit-and-run strategy is consistent with regular hordes of enemies as it is the elite. A principal idea – and a relatively ground-breaking one for the time – in Deus Ex is for the player to spend their time developing their stealth skills alongside augmenting their character’s nano-tech. It’s a system seen today in games like Cyberpunk 2077, a multi-directional upgrade tree that can tune player-characters towards damage absorbing human tanks, weapons specialists, or hacking and lock picking experts. There just aren’t any major bosses with which to test your builds and skills, but Deus Ex still shines as a bright forbearer for dystopian RPGs to this day regardless.

The Last of Us

Another Naughty Dog entry on this rundown. Plainly, the studio just isn’t that fond of boss battles, and this is true of their zombie-ravaged post-apocalyptic survive-a-thon series (the horrifying Rat King from The Last of Us 2 aside). Joel and Ellie’s first outing sees the pair face-off in arena-type locales against overpowered enemies – the bloaters in the school gymnasium and the creepy hotel basement spring to mind – but these are strong, recurring enemies consistent with the timeframe in which the host has been infected, according to The Last of Us lore. The one possible exception in is Ellie’s battle with David inside the burning restaurant. It’s a one-on-one battle of wits, but Ellie at the time doesn’t have any of her inventory so it can be argued this encounter is not a true boss fight.

Max Payne 2

Remedy Entertainment’s bullet-time third-person shooter started out with numerous boss fights; mobsters, in the first Max Payne, who could withstand heaps of punishment. Max Payne’s second entry largely did away with this formula. Leader of the Squeaky Cleaning Company Kaufman was a tougher than usual foe, but still didn’t take too many bullets before going down. The game’s final battle against Vladimir Lem plays out more like a puzzle encounter than a one-on-one fight of brute force. Max must shoot the legs of the scaffolding Vlad is standing on then take out the support of the spire above him before being able to target him directly. The final phase is akin to a boss fight, to be fair, but it’s barely a test.

Red Dead Redemption

Like Naughty Dog, Rockstar are a studio which by-and-large eschew boss battles in their open world games. Red Dead Redemption is no different; there are no major boss fights to speak of. Central antagonists Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch van der Linde whom John Marston is forced into hunting down across the vast Wild West don’t have final encounters resembling boss fights. The only encounter close to a boss fight is Jack Marston’s duel with Bureau of Investigation ringleader Edgar Ross, but this is just a duel – a dishonourable one for Ross – but a commonplace duel all the same. This encounter only has notoriety for the gravitas of revenge attuned to it by John’s son Jack.

Grand Theft Auto IV

The only conceivable boss fight in Grand Theft Auto history is the showdown with Big Smoke in GTA: San Andreas. All other fights, even against central antagonists, are gunfights or chases against narratively significant adversaries, but they’re not stronger than regular enemies. Niko’s final showdown and execution of Pegorino, accessible via the revenge ending option, is a thrilling chase sequence rather than one-on-one boss fight. Prior to this, Niko’s final encounter with major tormentor Dimitri Rascalov involves sneaking through the decks and cargo holds of the Platypus, with a brief cutscene emerging once Niko has wiped out all Rascalov’s goons.

Watch_Dogs 2

Another game with next to no boss-like encounters in this rundown, this hacktivism sequel takes a more nuanced approach to dealing with its antagonists. Case in point, Mark Thruss’s comeuppance comes when player-character Marcus Holloway downloads and releases evidence of vote rigging before election day. Blume Corporation CTO and chief antagonist Dusan Nemec’s downfall comes after Marcus infiltrates Blume HQ and steals data corroborating DedSec’s accusation of Nemec’s wrongdoing. Henceforth he rots in jail forever.

Alien: Isolation

Yeah, you’re probably thinking that Alien: Isolation is a game with a boss encounter; the persistently stalking Xenomorph is surely the boss, right? Well, yeah, maybe. However, there’s no distinct boss battle or one-on-one fighting section to speak of. The Xenomorph, truth be told, is so overpowered, it’s an unkillable nemesis, so dangerous in fact its more prudent to run and hide than face it head on. You’ll only lose.

Though the Grand Theft Auto franchise may be a fan favorite, the games do have a few flaws that many players simply won't admit.

Grand Theft Auto is a massive franchise that has left an indelible mark on the gaming industry. Players have fallen in love with the sprawling urban open-worlds presented, and the franchise’s irreverent humor has consistently been a point of controversy. Despite how beloved the series is, there are aspects of the games that are less than perfect. The following list highlights the problems in the series that fans often choose to overlook.
Driving is an important aspect of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, and GTA 4 is no different. Liberty City is filled with vehicles for players to purchase and steal. With this title, Rockstar strove for realism and this extends to the handling of vehicles.

Unfortunately, the result is that cars feel like they’re slipping on ice, and they sway far too much. It’s a damper on gameplay, and it makes driving from point A to B a tedious task. The problem also rears its ugly head when attempting to escape from the police, as weaving through traffic almost invariably results in collisions. Luckily, this issue was addressed in GTA 5.

The Xbox 360 is arguably Microsoft's best console in terms of games. Check out some of its greatest titles worth playing.

Microsoft isn’t necessarily known for incredible runs with its Xbox hardware. The OG Xbox launched with tons of hype but didn’t quite compete with Sony or Nintendo (while weighing enough to break your foot if dropped). The Xbox One shot itself multiple times in the foot and took years to recover. The Xbox Series X/S started stronger but struggled to consistently deliver worthwhile exclusives, to say nothing of dropping hardware revenue. However, at one point, there was the Xbox 360.

It was a magical time when Halo, Gears of War, and Forza had multiple follow-ups and extensive respect. Even before Microsoft slowed down on the exclusives and delved further into Kinect, the Xbox 360 generation offered some legendary releases. Here are our picks for the top 15, as of 2024.

Grand Theft Auto 4

Going from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to Grand Theft Auto 4 on a new generation of consoles wasn’t easy for Rockstar. However, while the latter had its shortcomings, it’s still a phenomenal entry in the series, with Niko Bellic’s rise through crime showcased in grim, unrelenting fashion. Its improvements to character models and motion capture, the sheer amount of dialogue, the increased scale of Liberty City, and more all made for an incredible sequel.
