GTA: San Andreas had its fair share of insane transportation options. If you're keen on unlocking them all (that too without cheats), here's how.

While you could unlock the Jetpack by simply using cheat codes in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, earning it legit is also an option. You’ll have to wait until CJ gets the “Black Project” mission at the Airstrip (which occurs roughly halfway into the game). It must be done between 8 PM and 6 AM, and involves infiltrating the secret military base.

To do this, you’ll need to find the control tower in the base and use it to open the blast doors. Avoid being detected by the searchlights – worse come worse, don’t shoot out more than two or the blast doors will be closed. If this happens, look for a vent that will lead into the base’s interior.

When dealing with the various patrolling soldiers, it’s possible to snipe them from afar but you could also use the Thermal Goggles to detect and avoid them. Once inside, disable the base’s defenses – this will be key to your escape. Next, look for a keycard (there will be a scientist who hands it to you) and access the Black Project – which is the Jetpack – in the launch bay.

The Jetpack is capable of ascending (with X/Right Trigger/Spacebar) and descending (Square/Left Trigger/Shift), with the Left Stick/directional keys being used for movement. Hold B/Left Mouse Button to fire a weapon while flying with the Jetpack. To remove it, descend until you’re on the ground and then press Triangle/Y/F.

Once you obtain the Jetpack in the mission, the alarm will trigger. Use it to escape to Arco del Oeste. The Truth will be waiting and takes the Jetpack but don’t worry. Return to the Airstrip to receive the “Green Goo” mission next. This one is fairly straightforward – you’ll assault a train while using the Jetpack and after taking out the guards, search for the Green Goo in question. Shoot the crates until you find a jar with the Green Goo inside. Take it, escape and return to The Truth.

Once this is done, the Jetpack is now permanently unlocked and can be found near the AC Tower in Verdant Meadows airfield.

How to Unlock the Hydra

The Hydra is your standard harrier with VTOL capabilities and while it may take a while to unlock it, the destructive power can’t be underestimated. First, you need to complete the mission “Vertical Bird” which involves infiltrating an assault ship in the Easter Basin Naval Station, stealing the Hydra and using it to destroy some spy ships. Sneaking through the ship is the best option but you can also go in guns blazing, if desired.

Once you have access to the Hydra, use it to take down any pursuing ships, then make your way to the flotilla of spy ships. Since it has VTOL capabilities, the Hydra can ascend and descend (using the same controls as the Jetpack). However, you can also shift to plane mode by pressing the Right Analog Stick/Num 2 and then pressing forward on the stick (or simply pressing Num 8 on keyboard).

After taking down the spy ships, you’ll then fly the Hydra back to the Verdant Meadows airfield. Once this is done, it will be permanently available at the airfield, though you can also find one in Easter Basin Naval Station and the secret military base where you got the Jetpack.

All Special Vehicles and How to Unlock Them

Besides the Jetpack and Hydra, let’s take a quick look at all of the other special vehicles in the game and how to permanently unlock them:

Leviathan – Complete the mission “Up, Up and Away” and it will be unlocked in the Verdant Meadows airfield. Otherwise, after completing the mission “Learning to Fly”, go to Easter Bay Airport – it will be present next to the Raindance.

Dumper – Complete all of the Quarry missions.

Monster – Enter a relationship with Michelle and reach 50 percent to unlock. Can also be unlocked by winning the 8-Track Stadium in Los Santos Forum.

Rhino – Either steal it from the secret military base (though good luck getting out in one piece) or 100 percent the game. The latter causes it near CJ’s house under the bridge.

Romero – Enter a relationship with Katie and reach 50 percent to unlock.

Bullet – Earn Silver Medals in driving school missions for all cars to unlock it.

Rustler – Complete all flying school missions. Located in the Verdant Meadows airfield hangar.

We compared the San Andreas remaster to the original across a number of different scenarios- here's what we found.

In an ideal world, the remaster for a game as universally beloved as GTA: San Andreas should have been a true labour of love- but as it turns out, we don’t live in an ideal world. San Andreas – The Definitive Edition is, like the other two games it’s packaged with, a disappointing remaster. Players have been ripping into its deficiencies since it launched, and we ran some tests on it ourselves to see how it stacks up against the original game when it comes to some of the smaller details. Here’s what we found.

RAIN

This is one of the most widely known issues with the new GTA remasters. When it rains in those games, especially during night time, visibility is reduced almost entirely. The rain effects here look like a filter rather than actual rain, with a constant sheet of droplets constantly obstructing vision. Things are marginally better in San Andreas than in, say, the GTA 3 remaster, but they’re still really, really bad.

CLAUDE

While the new art style used in the GTA remasters is, for the most part, pretty well-implemented, it isn’t a universal success. Some character models, for instance, look significantly worse in the new releases. Take Claude, for example- the GTA 3 protagonist has a brief cameo appearance in the game, and in the remaster, his facial model is completely messed up, looking smushed and unnaturally plasticky in all the wrong ways.

SHOOTING WATER

This is one of the areas where the San Andreas remaster showcases improvements over the original. Shooting weapons into a water body in the original game saw slight bubbles being created in the water upon impact. The effect in the remaster is much more pronounced, with the bubbled also being accompanied by ripple effects in the water. The ripples are still a static animation, but the end result is still better.

UNDERWATER EXPLOSIONS

Sadly, throwing a grenade into a water body yields much less satisfying results. Things are essentially unchanged- underwater grenade explosions in the original game were basically the same as any other grenade explosions with the same fire effects and no effect on the water whatsoever. The same is true in the remaster as well.

SHOOTING GLASS

Surprisingly, shooting at car windows is actually worse in the remaster than it was in the original. For starters, just like the original, the windows themselves don’t react to bullets at all, only the windshield does. Even here though, while in the original they would shatter and send shards of glass flying outward, in the remaster, when a windshield is destroyed, the glass simply disappears into thin air.

DAMAGING VEHICLES

This is yet another area where the San Andreas remaster is worse off than the original. Damaging vehicles with punches and melee weapons in the original game was quite satisfying, because you would see individual parts of the vehicle falling off. The remaster seems to have switched to scripted and static animations though, and parts of vehicles suddenly just teleport upon being damaged, and often not even in the right place.

BURNOUTS

Tire burnout effects are also disappointing to witness in the remaster. While the black smoke created by burnouts in the remaster is more pronounced than the white smoke in the original, it looks less realistic. Additionally, burnouts also left marks on the ground in the original, which doesn’t seem to be the case in the remaster.

DAMAGING PLANES

Just like cars, planes also don’t show satisfying damage effects in the San Andreas remaster. Where the original game exhibited surprisingly realistic animations for damaged parts while the plane was in the air, with trails of some and fire and what have you, in the remaster all you’ll get is a sudden torrent of flames appearing on your plane out of nowhere, and then vanishing just as abruptly.

FIRE

This is one area where things are largely unchanged in the remaster. Fires spread through environments at pretty much the same rate, and also leave scorch marks on the ground, and the effects for that are largely the same in both versions. You do get specific audio effects for the fire in the original though, which, bafflingly enough, isn’t always the case in the remaster.

INTERACTING WITH VEGETATION

The San Andreas remaster does have some minor improvements in physics when compared to the original. Vegetation, for instance, can be interacted with physically. Passing through bushes and walking on grass stalks in the original game yielded no visible results, but in the remaster, you can see vegetation reacting to CJ as he moves through it.

FOG

The PS2’s hardware constraints often meant that open world games had to resort to excessive fog to cover up deficiencies with draw distances. There is absolutely no fog in the remaster though, which means you can essentially see the entire map stretching out in front of you. And while that might seem like a good thing on paper, it’s actually… quite weird. Take a place to the edge of the map, for instance, and you’ll see literally all of San Andreas in the distance like a tiny Lego set. It makes the world seem much smaller than it did in the original game.

PUNCHING BAGS

Improvements to physics aren’t universal in the San Andreas remaster- in some cases, in fact, things are actually worse. You could, for instance, go to the gyms in the original game and physically interact with the punching bags, which would react to punches the way you would expect. In the remaster, they’re static assets that are just hanging there and do not respond to any physical contact whatsoever.

BLOCKING TRAFFIC

Taking cars onto busy roads, highways, and intersections and blocking the traffic is something every GTA player has done at some point, and you’ll notice some real differences to how the game reacts to that if you do so in the remasters. Doing so in the original often led to hilariously chaotic scenes, as cars would come flying in and crash into obstructions as if they weren’t there. In the remasters, things are much more realistic, and cars now patiently wait in the road rather than ramming into blockages. On the one hand, the realism is appreciated. On the other, however, we do miss the over-the-top nature of the original in this area.

SWIMMING ANIMATIONS

The San Andreas remaster has more than a few weird animation bugs, but the swimming animations take the cake. In an attempt to make thing look more dynamic and realistic, the remaster shows CJ bobbing up and down as if he’s reacting to ripples and tiny waves. Oftentimes, however, that will result in CJ either floating several inches into the air or even submerging underwater for a few seconds. Sure, the animation in the original was relatively more static, but at least it didn’t look this weird.

BOUNDARIES

Obviously, you expect every open world game to have map boundaries, but the way the remaster deals with them is surprisingly inept. For starters, you can visibly see white lines forming a box on the edges of the map. When you try moving past that boundary, the game suddenly just teleports you back behind them, facing in the other direction towards the map. It’s more than a little jarring. In the original game, while there was obviously nothing past the boundary, you could actually keep going past that boundary endlessly if you wanted to.

The remaster for biggest title in GTA's 3D universe is almost here. Take a look at what new players should know before hopping into Los Santos.

In 2004, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas debuted on the PlayStation 2, a full two years after GTA: Vice City, and became the console’s best-selling game of all time. It was the biggest title in the series up till that point and would introduce numerous new mechanics that would carry over into the new generation. With Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition releasing on November 11th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC, should new players hop into San Andreas’ remastered version? Let’s take a look at 15 things that should be known before doing so.

Story

The story centers around Carl Johnson or CJ, who returns to Los Santos after a five year absence to attend his mother’s funeral. After being accosted by officer Frank Tenpenny of the C.R.A.S.H. unit, CJ reunites with his friends from the Grove Street Families gang. After surviving a drive-by shooting and learning that the Ballas and Vagos have seized most of the territory and power, CJ commits to staying in Los Santos to help rebuild the gang. However, this is only the beginning of a grand saga of conspiracies, betrayals and high-stakes crimes.

Setting

Up till now, previous titles offered cities divided into boroughs or islands, and were fairly reasonable in size. But Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas offered, well, the state of San Andreas. This meant cities like Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas which each unlocked over the course of the story but there were also smaller locations like Red County and Flint County (which make up the countryside). Whetstone is where Mount Chiliad and the logging town of Angel Pine are located while Tierra Robada is a peninsular county with a bayside area. Bone County is where the deserts, and the Sherman Reservoir and Dam are located among other conspicuous sites. In terms of sheer size and scale, this was the largest world in the series till date.

Cast

As CJ (voiced by Chris Bellard), players encounter a fairly large cast of characters. Sean “Sweet” Johnson (played by Faizon Love) is CJ’s brother with whom he has a shaky relationship with; Melvin “Big Smoke” Harris (played by Clifton Powell) who serves as Sweet’s right-hand man; the corrupt Tenpenny (voiced by the impeccable Samuel L. Jackson); and many, many more. Even Ice-T has a fairly important role as rapper Madd Dogg.

Character Customization

For the first time in the series, players can actually influence the appearance and stats of the main character. There’s Respect, Stamina, Muscle and Fat which can be increased or decreased based on one’s actions. Hitting the gym, for example, will increase CJ’s muscles while eating too much periodically increases his weight, resulting in slower movement speed. And while GTA: Vice City had different outfits, San Andreas provides numerous brands with different articles of clothing that can be mixed and matched (along with different tattoos and hairstyles).

Open World Design and Improvements

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas offered a number of different improvements to Rockstar’s open world design when it launched. Pedestrian AI reacts more intelligently now – hitting their vehicles causes them to exit and attack the player. Attacking pedestrians also causes others to run away and there are much more extensive interactions with random folk. Gangs also have a stronger presence, existing as their own entity in the world and attacking or supporting CJ depending on his allegiance.

Swimming and Climbing, 2 Player Co-op

One of the greatest new additions in GTA: San Andreas is – believe it or not – the ability to swim (both Claude and Tommy would slowly die in deep water). CJ could also climb over various walls and fences, which meant the days of trying to find a way around simple obstacles were finally at an end. It’s also the first game in the 3D universe to introduce two-player co-op. Despite some restrictions, it offered some pretty fun ways to cause mayhem with a friend. Whether it’s included in the Definitive Edition or improved is currently unknown.

Much has been made about how much side content the trilogy offers, and San Andreas is the most packed of all. Outside of the 100 – yes, 100 – main story missions, you have Asset missions, racing tournaments, stadium events, Schools, the Exports and Imports chain of side missions, challenges, graffiti tags, and much more. Classic activities like taxi driving, paramedic, firefighting and vigilantism return, once again providing rewards for completing their various levels. HowLongtoBeat.com estimates 31 hours for the main story, 46.5 hours for the story and extra content, and a whopping 82 hours to complete everything.

Gang Warfare

Instead of simply having gangs as friends or foes in the world, GTA: San Andreas introduces Gang Warfare for taking over rival gang territory. Each district has a number of territories that must be cleared of rival gang members and will generate money upon capture. Even after a territory has been claimed by the Grove Street Families, opposing gangs can attempt to retake it and it’s up to the player to stop them. Based on CJ’s Respect level, you can recruit up to seven gang members who will accompany you and attack anyone that looks at you funny. Sometimes, they’ll even run off on their own and randomly hijack a vehicle. The AI isn’t necessarily the best but the resulting chaos is great.

Vehicles

There are 212 different vehicles, over double that of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with various sports cars, SUVs, Lowriders, Sedans, Motorcycles, Industrial vehicles and much more to choose from. There are also a number of boats, helicopters and planes along with RC vehicles and, last but not least, the Jetpack. San Andreas also introduces driveby shooting, which allows for firing a weapon while inside a vehicle, and it’s seeing improvements in the Definitive Edition.

Schools

One of the many “firsts” that GTA: San Andreas introduces are schools where CJ can improve his skills in driving, boating, flying and biking. Each offers a range of lessons and tests to complete along with different medals based on one’s score. Some like Flight School and Driving School must be attended for story progression, though completing everything isn’t required. Various vehicles are doled out as rewards and thanks to the Definitive Edition’s new checkpoint system, which allows for restarting a failed mission immediately, it should be easier to complete some of the more frustrating challenges like Flight School. Hopefully.

Restricted Areas

Restricted areas were introduced in GTA: Vice City, granting a Wanted level in the police station or the bank after a heist. San Andreas expands on these significantly – along with the police impound garage, there are also military bases like Easter Basin Naval Station which grant an immediate five stars upon trespassing (and where fighter jets can be stolen). So if you’re wondering where the “survive for as long as possible in the military base” challenges in GTA 5 came from, it all began in San Andreas.

Assets and Properties

Assets return, once again allowing players to acquire different businesses which generate income on a daily basis. Most of them are unlocked from completing missions though you’ll need to spend money to acquire places like the Verdant Meadows Airstrip. Properties and safe houses are also back with numerous types scattered throughout the state of San Andreas. Some may be free while others require purchasing (and offer different benefits after clearing certain missions). Not all of them have garages but will sometimes spawn vehicles nearby.

Weapons and Combat Improvements

Though it has slightly less melee weapons than Vice City, San Andreas offers 38 weapons in total. This includes classics like the M4, Spaz 12, Tech9, Flamethrower, and Minigun along with new weapons like the Heat-Seeking Rocket Launcher and Desert Eagle, not to mention tools like Night Vision, Thermal Vision and Parachutes (which required rethinking the series’ fall damage system). Combat is also heavily revamped over previous games with options like dual wielding firearms, revamped crosshairs which become darker as the enemy’s health decreases, and auto-aim improvements. Again, how the GTA 5 style controls will factor into The Definitive Edition remains to be seen but it’s the best in the 3D trilogy up till this point.

12 Radio Stations

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas also features the most number of radio stations in the series with Playback FM providing classic East Coast Hip Hop like Public Enemy; K-DST offering classic rock tracks like The WHO and Billy Idol; and Radio Los Santos with its West Coast Hip Hop like Dr. Dre, 2Pac and much more. You even have WCTR, a talk radio station with a variety of programs and shows. There are 12 stations in total with one custom station for adding your own songs. While previous titles have had a custom playlist option, San Andreas offers more options like shuffling, and adding commercials between songs. You can also have your playlist function as a normal radio station.

22.679 GB on PS4 and PS5

PlayStation Game Size on Twitter estimates the total size of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to be about 39 GB on PS4 and PS5. GTA: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition takes up 22.679 GB, making it the biggest game in the trilogy. Those curious about the general quality of the remaster can also check it out on Xbox Game Pass – it arrives for the service as a standalone release on the same day.

The list appears to mirror previous re-releases, with songs from Michael Jackson being omitted from The Definitive Edition.

After rumors and speculation, Rockstar Games has finally revealed the list of confirmed tracks in Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Some tracks like two from Michael Jackson have been removed but the overall track list falls in line with previous re-releases and the PC version available on the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Certain tracks that have been heard in recent leaked gameplay footage haven’t been listed like Sigue Sigue Sputnik’s Love Missile F1-11. Still, there are over 200 songs across 29 radio stations with higher quality audio at 16bit 44 hz along with support for 5.1 Surround Sound.

In the meantime, the full tracklist for all three remasters can be viewed below, helpfully organized by radio station.

In the absence of official extensive footage, various users have uploaded their own footage ahead of the trilogy's release tomorrow.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is out soon but Rockstar Games still hasn’t provided extensive gameplay footage for the remasters. Fortunately, Reddit user Zombathon67890 provided some off-screen gameplay of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition. Check it out below.

That’s not all though – okayjosh on YouTube also uploaded footage of Grand Theft Auto 3 – The Definitive Edition and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition. Overall, there’s a world of difference from the older games with much better draw distance and improved environmental textures. Even the revamped character models look pretty good and in keeping with the original aesthetic. The new checkpoint system can also be seen in action.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition arrives tomorrow for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. It’s currently available to pre-load on Xbox and PlayStation platforms along with Nintendo Switch while PC players will have to wait until launch to download it. Stay tuned for more details on the title in the coming days.
