Disaster Report 4 is a bizarre experience, whose charm and appeal wears thin quickly.

Post-apocalyptic games are everywhere, but mid-apocalyptic games are a bit less common. It’s here that Disaster Report 4 attempts to carve out a niche for itself. By focusing on the choices you make during a major disaster, it certainly stands out from other apocalyptic games. Unfortunately, while Disaster Report 4 is certainly unique, it just isn’t very much fun to play.

When you start the game, you’re taken through a rather simplistic character creation, where you get to change your character’s gender and appearance. Now make no mistake, this is no Skyrim. Your customization options are limited to a few preset faces for each gender, as well as a few preset hair styles. That’s not to say it’s bad, necessarily; the character presets all look decent enough. But it’s certainly more limited than many other offerings out there. After defining your character’s physical appearance, you’re given a few questions to define your character’s personality.

"After the brief character creation, you’re thrown into the gameplay, where a massive earthquake strikes while you’re arriving in a new city."

These questions are…bizarre, to say the least. The questions will be things like “where are you from”, and the responses often seem rather arbitrary. One answer might be “I’m from a town far from here” while another option will say “I’m from nowhere close to here”, leaving the player sitting there struggling to see the difference between the two. These choices also seemed to have no real bearing on the gameplay itself, making them almost entirely for personal roleplay; which is fine, I suppose, but doesn’t change the fact that they feel really strange and out of place.

After the brief character creation, you’re thrown into the gameplay, where a massive earthquake strikes while you’re arriving in a new city. After a quick cutscene (where you’re once again presented with a strange, arbitrary dialog choice), the gameplay begins, with you wandering the damaged streets of the city.

Not the whole city, mind you; the game is broken up into several stages, each of which comprise of a few blocks of the city at a time. In each stage, you wander the area, trying to figure out how to progress.

"This bizarre series of events is played totally straight; there isn’t one second of tongue-in-cheek delivery or irony to any of it."

At first, the game has a strange sort of charm to it. The crux of the gameplay comes down to helping strangers to survive, and making choices through dialog. The whole thing has a bizarre, B-movie vibe to it, and at first it’s actually kind of endearing. For example, and early part of the game tasks you with getting water for an injured man in a convenience store. For some reason, neither of you thinks to just grab some off the shelf.

Instead, you have to dress up as an employee of the convenience store and serve the angry customers, because the cashier is cowering in the back. Then you take toilet paper to the store manager, who is stuck in the bathroom with nary a roll in sight. Only then can you go and buy the water off the manager for an exorbitant price to give it to the injured man. Oh, and at some point, the real store manager comes in and runs off the man you’ve been talking to, who isn’t actually the manager at all.

This bizarre series of events is played totally straight; there isn’t one second of tongue-in-cheek delivery or irony to any of it. Then there’s the dialog choices that appear every so often. These pop up during interactions with characters, and just like the choices at character creation, are often strangely arbitrary and ill-defined. It’s not uncommon to be presented with a choice along the lines of “agree to help”, “excitedly agree to help”, “sigh and agree to help”, and so on. One particularly interesting option came at a point where I had to shimmy across a ledge.

"The majority of the actual gameplay boils down to either extremely simplistic puzzle solving, or dull and repetitive fetch quests."

The game presented me with a couple of options for how I wanted to go about this, such as “go across the ledge”; or instead I could choose to “carefully go across the ledge.” I had to cross this ledge multiple times throughout the level, and needless to say, there was absolutely no discernable difference between either choice in actual gameplay.

It all exists solely to serve your own personal roleplay; that and a system of Moral Points that supposedly track your morality throughout the game. Different choices can earn you points; Moral Points for good choices, and Immoral Points for bad choices. But once again, this system seemed to have no actual effect on the gameplay, beyond simply giving you a visual reminder of whether you were playing a good person or a bad person. Otherwise, it didn’t noticeably change anything about the experience.

For the first few hours, the sheer strangeness and earnestness of the whole experience are actually pretty charming, in the same way that a lot of B-movies can be. It’s not really all that good, and at times you’re baffled by why something is the way it is. And yet, you keep going, spurred on by a strange fascination with the whole thing. I found myself weirdly invested in the journey early on, putting a lot of time into my strange and arbitrary choices.

Unfortunately, time ultimately betrays Disaster Report 4. After playing for a few hours, the novelty of the experience begins to wear off. And once that charm is gone, you realize the game has very, very little to keep you going. The majority of the actual gameplay boils down to either extremely simplistic puzzle solving, or dull and repetitive fetch quests. The arbitrary nature of the dialog choices carries over to the actual gameplay, with very specific and often frustratingly obtuse solutions that require you to talk to every NPC or interact with every single object, on the off chance that for some undefined and unknowable reason they might have what you need to progress.

"Disaster Report 4 is at times a charming game. It has an earnestness reminiscent of so-bad-they’re-good B-movies, and for the first few hours it carries the game forward."

Once the game’s strange charm wears off, you’re left with a game that’s best described as tedious. The game quickly begins to feel like a chore. One particular mission required me to backtrack through an apartment complex three different times; I would collect an object, return to the guy who told me about it only to be told of yet another object that I needed to get, all the way on the other side of the complex. That’s not gameplay; that’s busywork.

Disaster Report 4 is at times a charming game. It has an earnestness reminiscent of so-bad-they’re-good B-movies, and for the first few hours it carries the game forward. Unfortunately, Disaster Report 4 also lasts considerably longer than a B-movie, giving it plenty of time for the quirky appeal to give way to tedium, frustration, and boredom. I suppose some people could find some enjoyment to squeeze out of its roleplay, simultaneously strangely specific and abstract. But for most of us, the game will wear thin after only a few hours.

It’s been a long, long time, but the Disaster Report series is finally returning westward with Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories. The game had to survive something of a disaster of a development in its own right with several delays and issues before releasing in Japan. Now, we get our first extended look at the game’s English version.

In a lengthy stream from publisher NIS America, we get to see what the English localization will sound like for the first time. It’s somewhat spotty in places, but not too terrible. We also get a peek at the character creation and a decent amount of the story along with several character reactions. You can check it out below.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories will release for PlayStation 4 (the version the below footage was taken from), Switch and PC on April 7th and will get a special physical release that you can read about through here.

The long delayed adventure game finally gets a western date.

It’s taken a very long time for Disaster Report 4 to finally release. The game suffered multiple delays and behind the scenes reshuffles before coming out at the end of 2018 in Japan. Since then, the game has got an updated version, and now it will finally come westward later this year.

Today, publisher NIS America announced that the game would come to both North America and Europe in April. It will be based on the “Plus” re-release of the title, which saw additional content and gameplay improvements. This will be the first time since 2006 that a game in the series has left the Asian regions. It’ll receive a special edition release for $89.99, available exclusively on the NIS America store through here. The announcement came with a new gameplay trailer, which you can see below.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories will launch in the west April 7th for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC.
See the variety of characters you'll navigate through with the latest trailer.

After a long period of uncertainty, the survival based game in the longrunning series, Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories, will be coming to the west sometime next year. The game takes place during a major disaster in Kobe city and tasks you with navigating through both the wreckage of the city, and the people stuck in it with you. Today we got a special trailer that highlights the latter, called ‘Those Who Remain.’

Part of the game’s survival mechanics come down to how you interact with these characters.
The survival franchise finally comes west again.

Disaster Report is an interesting franchise that never quite made a dent outside Japan, despite having multiple entries and spin offs. The last time a game left the Asian region was way back in 2006 with the second mainline game (localized outside Japan as Raw Danger!). That changes next year, as the latest installment, Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories, is coming west once again.

You can see the announcement trailer below from western publisher, NIS America. The game features multiple playable characters who get caught up in several unexpected disasters. You must navigate through that, being cautious for your own survival and those around you. It also promises tender story moments among the chaos of the crumbling Kobe city. Not only is the game getting a release in the west, it’s also getting a PC version for PC players who want to get in on the survival action.

Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories will release early 2020 in the west for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC.

First teaser trailer showcases snippets of shoot 'em up gameplay.

There have been a number of famed shoot ’em ups through the decades – Darius, Gradius – but R-Type arguably stands out. It’s been a while since we’ve seen a follow-up in the series, especially since R-Type Final released in 2003. However, developer Granzella has announced R-Type Final 2 with a trailer teasing all the shoot ’em up action we know and love.

Along with stages built from scratch, R-Type Final 2 will have all the fighters from the previous game with “expressions of attacks, operability and the exhilarating feeling of the gameplay” intensified. There will be more customizable elements for fighters as well. Other quality of life improvements include support for 16:9 displays and Granzella is looking at improving the game to take advantage of this.

If the difficulty – which is “originally high” – turns you off, then there will be the option to set difficulty level according to one’s ability. A higher difficulty means a better score though, which makes for more bragging rights when comparing to other players around the world. R-Type Final 2 will be coming to PS4 with the developer planning a crowd-funding campaign. Look out for more details in May.

The upcoming action-adventure title will now be releasing in November.

Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories, the action adventure PS4 exclusive developed by Granzella, was merely two weeks away from its launch, but the developer has now announced that the Japanese release of the game’s been pushed back. You’re going to have to wait a little longer – a month more – to get your hands on the game.

Originally slated for a launch on October 25, the developer recently announced that the release has now been pushed back to November 22 (a Western release for the game was never confirmed, so audiences outside of Japan remain unaffected). The developer plans to further improve the game’s quality in the extra month they have, as you may have guessed already.

Disaster Report 4 was, interestingly enough, initially going to launch in 2011 as a PS3 title, but production on the game was halted in light of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that year. Development was picked up again due to demand from fans in 2015, and the game’s now finally close to launch- even after the delay, November 22 is not that far away.

In case you’re not aware of what the game is all about, be sure to check out its recent trailer here.

The new trailer showcases some of the various disasters and diverse environments you will come across in the game.

Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories is the latest game in the Disaster Report series, and we’ve already seen quite a bit of it through a trailer and some screenshots. Now, at Tokyo Game Show 2018, Granzella has released a brand new trailer for the game, and it showcases some of the different features and environments that we can expect to see in the upcoming title.

The whole point of the game is to somehow try and piece together the reasons behind the natural disaster that occurs, all the while trying to make it out alive. The trailer showcases some of the various hazardous situations you will be encountering in the game, and these will all be presented quite realistically- by the looks of it, at least. You will also have multiple choices regarding how you respond to the NPCs you come across in the game. The game certainly looks quite exciting and visually gorgeous.

You can check out the new trailer for the game below. Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories is set to release on October 25 in Japan.

The latest entry in the series will focus on representing disasters realistically and will be released sometime next year.

Disaster Report 4 Plus: Summer Memories is in the works and Granzella has now released a new trailer for the game. The trailer features the protagonist walking around the city that has been struck by disaster. As with other entries in the series, it is up to the player character to discover the reasons behind the disaster while also staying out of danger. In this way, the game’s main theme is survival with an emphasis on story as well.

Granzella has collaborated with Kobe City Fire Department so as to achieve a degree of realism regarding how the disaster is portrayed. The added degree of realism will aid in being informative to players regarding how to deal with such scenarios in the real world. Additionally, the game will be supervised by Satoshi Watanabe whose expertise in disaster prevention and crisis management would also assist the game in its goal to represent disasters realistically.

The game is set to release exclusively for the PS4 in Japan sometime in 2018. More information about the game should be revealed soon enough. In the meantime, you can check out the trailer and a couple of screenshots below.
