Weapons are good but some games provide a larger-than-life means to satisfy that urge for destruction.

Among the many different feelings that video games can capture, the sensation of piloting something larger than life stands out. It’s that feeling of commanding an immense machine of war, destroying all those underfoot and going up against another metal behemoth. Such feelings are few and far between these days but that doesn’t mean history isn’t full of stellar mech titles. Let’s examine 15 of them here.

Xenoblade Chronicles X

No, it’s not quite the same as XenoGears. But Xenoblade Chronicles X does throw customizable Skells at you for navigating the enormous world. With three different types, customizable weapons and the ability to transform into vehicles, Skells can help turn the tide in some battles. Also, they look incredibly cool, which is an essential part of owning a giant mech.

The free to play mech shooter will soon cease to exist.

Free to play mech shooter Hawken isn’t long for this world. Reloaded Games has announced that it will be shutting down on PC in order to “refocus” its development efforts. Hawken will also be removed from the Steam store on January 2nd 2018 but currently, the DLC is already unavailable.

“It’s been an incredible journey since the introduction of Hawken on Steam, back in 2014. The game’s success has been largely due to your continuous support. The Hawken community has been the cornerstone of this ever-evolving franchise,” the developer stated on Facebook.

Hawken first started as an open beta in 2012 but later shifted to Steam Early Access in 2014. It would later release for Xbox One and PS4 in 2016 but development actually shifted from Adhesive Games to Reloaded Games (of APB fame) in 2015. It’s seen a number of changes, updates and new content since release. As per the developer at least, the community has also been fairly active.

Thus far, no information has been provided about the console versions and whether they’ll remain online. For that matter, even as Hawken is removed from Steam in January 2018, it remains to be seen if it will be available to play on PC till then.

Good news(?)

Remember Hawken? it was a very promising free to play mech action/sim game for the PC in active development, until it ran into some troubles, and work on it was suspended. However, it appears now that the game will be re-entering the land of the living, thanks to the developers of APB: Reloaded, Reloaded Games, who have acquired the property.

“I’m pretty excited to now be able to announce that Reloaded Games is the new owner of Hawken,” New producer Joshua “capnjosh” Clausen of K2 Network said on Facebook.

“It’s a seriously great honor to be a part of the Hawken story, and I want to see it thrive.”

In addition to this, a list of update priorities for the game going forward was also shared on Facebook:

Fix password reset

Get Forums working again

Fix more deployment stuff

Fix a bunch of tools systems

Fix more back end systems

Plan new updates and future changes

Of course, it is not entirely sure what this might mean- while APB: Reloaded can certainly be viewed as a successful relaunch, there are some who feel Reloaded’s support for the game was and is lacking. It remains to be seen whether or not they can give Hawken the attention it deserves.

Adhesive's mech combat game rolls out on Early Access.

Finally, the mech game of the year is available for all of us to play on PC! That’s right – we’re talking about Adhesive Games’ Hawken, which was previously available on Steam Early Access but has now gone free to play.

Interestingly, the game is still very much an Early Access game with the full release to happen later this year. The difference is that now that it’s become free to play, you’ll be paying full price for content bundles rather than getting them at a discount. The Nemesis bundle has also reportedly been discontinued.

Hawken started out as an open beta in December 2012 before transitioning over to Steam to become an Early Access title. The game will be published by Meteor Entertainment later this year and unlike certain other mech-based games, Hawken focuses purely on mech vs. mech combat. Interested? Check it out here and let us know what you think.

"Releasing HAWKEN on consoles is something we’ve discussed as a possibility for the future"

In a recent interview with VideoGamesUncovered, Adhesive Games, the company behind the massively successful PC mech multiplayer game, Hawken, spoke to the potential of gamers seeing a release of Hawken across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Jason Hughes, the producer over at Adhesive Games said:

“This is a really exciting time for the industry and it’s great to see such energy in the air about what’s coming on the horizon. All the console manufacturers have done an amazing job with theirlaunches and it continues to be a great time for games (and gamers). Releasing HAWKEN on consoles is something we’ve discussed as a possibility for the future but all of our efforts are focused on the PC version we have live right now.”

Hawken has received massive praise since it’s beta release last year, and the game shows no signs of losing steam. Based on the public’s reception to the game, it would seem to be in the best interest of Adhesive Games to very seriously consider a next gen version once they tie up all the loose ends on the PC release.

New patch completely revamps the game experience.

The newest video that you see above describes a host of changes inbound for the free to play action game, Hawken, currently still in open beta. The patch, numbered 0.9.4 and formally titled ‘Ascension,’ adds a host of new improvements to the title that promise to completely revamp the experience.

Of the changes promised with the new patch are new HUDs, completely revamped and redone for every single mech unit in the game, a new map called Last Eco, which supports all existing Hawken game modes, a Mech Rank system which adds the ability to gain EXP for, and level up your mechs, enabling you to unlock parts and weapons for it, and to unlock a new mech once your existing one is leveled up. Along with this you also get the EXP Overflow system, which lets you play with a maxxed out mech and gain experience, which you can then use on other, lower leveled mechs.

There are also a host of other improvements, including a Pilot Rank system, a new Slot System, and much, much more. Check out the video above and see for yourself.

Learn the ropes with this new repair class.

Adhesive Games’ mech simulation Hawken is still going strong, despite the annoying April Fool’s Day prank that nearly guaranteed we’d bury the game for good (we kid. Maybe). Now new screenshots have come out for the game’s Technical Class, which judging by the way it follows mechs and “sparks” them, would probably be a repair unit.
For more detailed information on how to properly wreck havoc with this class – and take full advantage of its abilities – head on over to the developer’s site where designer Chris Vance offers tips and tricks necessary for survival.

Published by Meteor Entertainment, Hawken is a free to play first person shooter at its core, but one that has you piloting giant mechs. It features more action than your typical MechWarrior, and entered into open beta on December 12th 2012. Developed using Unreal Engine 3, Hawken features three mech types – namely the light type, heavy type, and all-around type – along with four multiplayer modes when it releases.

Frostbite Engine to use Oculus Rift in the future?

DICE has posted a new job listing on their website, which may indicate that they are testing out the Oculus Rift with Battlefield 4.

Here is the job description:

Explore existing research for relevant subjects

Investigate and implement support for Oculus Rift SDK in the Frostbite Engine

Investigate and implement techniques for improving user experience

It seems that DICE just wants to reasearch how the Oculurs Rift can be used or supported in the Frostbite Engine. Oculus Rift has caught many developers eyes already, including Valve and Hawken developers.

Team Fortress 2 and Hawken are the first two games to ever use Oculus Rift that are out on the market right now, once the hardware launches. Now it seems that DICE wants to jump on the bandwagon and see what they can do for their current or future titles.

Check back on GamingBolt for more regarding Oculus Rift future and where DICE will decide to take it for themselves. Post any comments or opinions you have down below in the comment section.

The ground trembles as giant mechs are marching across North America to spread the joy of HAWKEN. Meteor Entertainment and Adhesive Games, along with industry leaders such as ASUS, Logitech, and Machinima will be setting up HAWKEN matches at various booths at PAX East and GDC. Various merchandise will also be on sale at these venues.

Those who visit the Meteor Entertainment booth 1080 at PAX East will find themselves overwhelmed with a impressive setup that include:

Twelve Alienware X51 game stations, decked out with Logitech headsets, gaming mice, and G710 gaming keyboards, with graphics optimized on NVIDIA GPUs, playing head-to-head HAWKEN deathmatches.

Free HAWKEN/Machinima beanies and HAWKEN postcards with codes for 5000 HAWKEN Credits.

HAWKEN T-shirts and the HAWKEN: Genesis graphic novel on sale.

Stamps for your Alienware PAX East Scavenger Hunt card at our reception counter.

Attendees will also be able to play the game at various other boots from third parties, including: Asus in booth 762, Logitech in booth 1056, Machinima in booths 613 & 712, Gunnar in booth 374, and finally NVIDIA in booth 862.

PAX East ain’t the end of the road. The mechs will be making its way to the Moscone Center in San Francisco for GDC, where the game will be playable at Kiosks 18 and 47. HAWKEN is also one of the few games to be awarded the coveted “Best in Play” award at GDC.

Mark Long, CEO of Meteor Entertainment will be discussing the topic of launching Games in emerging markets at the Rixty Panel which will be held at at 11AM in Room 3018 in the West Hall on Thursday. So be sure to pay that panel a visit if you’re on the show floor.

If for some reason you’ve been living under a rock for the past year and haven’t heard of Hawken, then you’ve been missing out on one of the best free to play games to ever come out of the incubator. HAWKEN is a multiplayer mech combat game which features some of the most frantic action in the multiplayer arena. It’s developed by indie developer Adhesive Games who has done a stupendous job so far. And despite being a indie game, HAWKEN boasts visuals that put most AAA releases of today to shame. It’s currently in Open Beta and if you’re even remotely interested in the notions of giant robots beating the scrap out of each other, then you need to look it up.

Check out some amazing wallpapers for Hawken in 1080P.

Check out some amazing wallpapers for Hawken in 1080P which you can use for your desktop, PS3, laptops, Android, iPad and other devices.

About the game:

Developed using Unreal Engine 3, Hawken looks fantastic, putting players in the cockpits of lethal mechs, each with their own weapons, loadouts, and perks. Through kills and match victories, players will rank up and unlock new items for their mechs, opening up new tactical opportunities and new play styles.

Being a free-to-play title, players also have the option of speeding progress along through the use of real money transactions, though these do not grant additional power or a competitive edge over players who progress through exclusively through the use of experience.

The game is developed by Adhesive games.
