Even games with the most simple mechanics can hide an exceptional depth. Here are 15 such titles that are worth checking out.

For all the games with complex control schemes, economies, balance changes, and loot, it’s nice to sit down with something that isn’t too complicated. Whether you’re looking for something easy to control, or experiences to hop in and out of with minimal fuss, these 15 titles and their shockingly simple mechanics will pull you in. Let’s take a closer look at each and explain why.

A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale: Requiem introduced new gameplay options like controlling rats, a crossbow, larger environments for more opportunities and so on. But it’s easy to forget just how straightforward Innocence was. For the most part, you would be running, sneaking around, bonking enemies with the slingshot, solving small puzzles to progress past the rats, and so on. Not to say that any of this was bad. It’s smaller scale than Requiem and a perfect introduction to the world.

To The Moon and Finding Paradise developer's "time-resetting thriller mystery" is finally releasing for PC later this month.

Impostor Factory aka To The Moon 3 or even To The Moon 3: Impostor Factory has a release date. It’s out on September 30th and is available to wishlist for PC via Steam. The follow-up for To The Moon and Finding Paradise was announced in 2019 and meant to release last year but faced some delays.

As for the story, it may or may not involve Dr. Watts and Dr. Rosalene from the previous games. This time around, the protagonist is Quincy who ventures to a mansion for a fancy party. Sooner or later, he stumbles on a time machine in the bathroom. While this sounds nifty enough, the death toll starts rising and some cosmic horror seems afoot.

Of course, this isn’t the full story but that’s to be expected. One thing that’s for sure is that it will feature the same aesthetic and gameplay mechanics as the previous games (which it may be a prequel or sequel to). No fillers or time drains, guaranteed. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Time travel, Lovecraftian influences and a new character are involved in the story.

Remember Freebird Games’ Impostor Factory, a seemingly new IP? The developer is now referring to it as To the Moon 3: Impostor Factory, a follow-up for To the Moon and Finding Paradise. Check out the announcement trailer below – the game is out on Steam at the end of next year.

Much like its predecessors, this is a narrative-driven adventure title. This time around, the story focuses on Quincy, who went to a “parteh” at a strange mansion. Soon enough, he discovers a time machine, other people start dying and Lovecraftian tentacles get involved. As per the official Steam page, “That’s around 1/3 of what the game is really about.”

You’ll still get that “cozy mix between adventure game elements and classic RPG aesthetics” so don’t worry. It also seems that we haven’t heard the last of Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts, characters from the previous games who help give dying individuals a chance to live out their deepest wish. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime – it’s going to be a long wait.

Freebird Games describes it as a "time-resetting thriller mystery" that involves "bloody murders."

To The Moon and Finding Paradise developer Freebird Games has announced its next title. Releasing next year, it’s called Impostor Factory and sees players participating in a “time-resetting thriller-mystery that involves a series of bloody murders.” As noted by the blurb, this is a pretty big departure from the studio’s traditional story-telling title.

Not much else is known about Impostor Factory, and it may be some time before we actually see gameplay footage. Freebird Games’ titles have usually been about extensive conversations, light puzzle solving, and exploration. While it remains to be seen if Impostor Factory will have as memorable of a story, it’s still interesting to see the studio freely admit that the title represents “an end of an era.”

If you haven’t checked out Freebird’s other titles, they’re well worth your time. To The Moon concerns two scientists creating memories via a machine for terminally ill patients to grant their “final wishes”. Finding Paradise continues that storyline, but with a new patient and several memorable twists and turns.

Stay tuned for more information on Impostor Factory in the come weeks and months.
