A different kind of trailer for the shooter series.

The latest entry in the Call of Duty series is just over a week away. It’s so close that pre-loading has started on some systems. Because of that, marketing is obviously kicking up a notch. Today we got a much different kind of piece of material for the game, with a Japanese live action trailer.

The trailer can be seen below. It stars Japanese actress Tsubasa Honda, and is a much more dreamy and meditative tone than you probably expect from a Call of Duty trailer, as it has Honda standing on a building in a calm state of mind before running into combat. There’s also a making-of video that came along with the new trailer, which you can also see below, though it is in Japanese.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on October 25th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you need a Call of Duty fix before that, the mobile game is currently going strong in the meantime.

Spec Ops gameplay footage also coming in early October.

Infinity Ward has unveiled new information on its multiplayer component for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare over the past few months. However, it’s remained conspicuously quiet on campaign and Spec Ops footage. That will be changing in the weeks leading up to launch, with campaign gameplay footage to be revealed at the end of September.

According to the official Call of Duty Twitter, which lays out a roadmap of sorts for reveals prior to launch, cross-play details will be revealed in the week of September 16th. We already know that both PC and console users can opt out of playing with/against each other. Cross-play can also be tested out in the second beta from September 19th to 23rd.

If that wasn’t enough, gameplay footage will also be revealed for the Spec Ops mode in the week of October 7th. The mode will offer co-op missions with varying difficulties, but we’ll finally get to see what that entails and how it differs from previous Modern Warfare games. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out on October 25th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

New graphical changes and their relevance to gameplay is discussed.

Infinity Ward animation lead Zack Volker recently spoke to Official PlayStation Magazine about the specifics of the new engine powering Call of Duty: Ghosts, which will be releasing for the current and next generation of consoles.

Despite not talking about the gameplay elements too much aside from the new mantling and sliding systems, a few little tidbits have been revealed about the engine.

The team at Infinity Ward never felt that technology itself has limited them. Very rarely have they required more horsepower but in this case, they want to increase the level of immersion. The new engine also allows them to include animal characters – as can be seen with the new dog companion – increase fidelity of particles, lighting quality and number of polygons on screen to aid in immersion.

However, as Volker reiterates, no matter what you buy the game on – next gen hardware or current gen machines – you will get the same gameplay experience. This is so no one feel short-changed from not having the best-looking versions. It is a given though that the current gen versions won’t be as visually impressive as the PS4 or Xbox One versions.

As for developing a new engine, it’s something that came out of necessity. Volker states that creating a new engine from the ground up is impossible, and would reportedly require an army of 200 engineers (or exactly one John Carmack and lots of pizza).

Since the current engine couldn’t handle all the available bandwidth, it is observed as to what elements are significant and encompassing of the engine and its visual quality, and whether upgrading them will lead to any significant advancements.

The original engine was built on the Quake engine, and has since seen many adjustments with each subsequent sequel, whenever talk goes on about upgrading certain systems in the engine, it’s always done from a gameplay perspective. If it doesn’t add to the gameplay experience, then certain aspects aren’t included in the engine.

So if your question is, “How are fish swimming away adding to the gameplay”, then the answer is immersion. For this experience, Infinity Ward deemed it necessary for increasing the immersiveness of the game.

We’ll see how well that adds to the experience when Call of Duty: Ghosts releases on November 5th worldwide for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC and Xbox One.
