The upcoming Intellivision Amico has been delayed again to the end of the year, citing reasons of hardware supply issues and logistics challenges.

Intellivision’s upcoming console, the Amico has been delayed for the third time in a row now. In an email sent out to customers who pre-ordered the console, Intellivision revealed the information and later took to Twitter to share the news. The console is now expected to release by the end of the year.

This is the third delay in a row, and Intellivision originally planned to release the console in October of 2020. The manufacturer has cited reasons pertaining to unprecedented international component supply and logistics issues, which is quite obvious, given that there is a global shortage of silicon and all-related hardware.

Intellivision currently has upwards of 10,000 pre-orders on the line. The Intellivison Amico is aimed at family-friendly fun and will feature fan-favorites like Earthworm Jim. The company seems to be aiming towards a very specific niche audience, and there is quite the chance that they might be gearing up for a comeback with the Amico.

Some controllers immerse you seamlessly in the game but not these.

Developing video games is tough but for all the work that goes into graphics, sound, gameplay and programming, the controller is one’s main gateway to appreciating it all. Even the greatest games can be mired by terrible controllers. So of course, we’re going to be taking a look at 15 of the most horrendous controllers of all time and what made them so uniquely awful.

Xbox “Duke”

For the record: original Xbox controllers were not Frisbees. After all, throwing a Frisbee at someone wouldn’t knock them out cold like “The Duke”, such was the weight and thickness that the OG Xbox controller possessed. If nothing else, it was solid and suited incredibly large hands. And really, there was nothing else. At least Microsoft redesigned the controller to be smaller and more comfortable down the line.

The classic platformer makes a comeback in truly bizarre fashion.

Yesterday, we wrote about the bizarre news of Bethesda giving away a RAGE 2-themed Dreamcast in a contest. If you thought that was going to be the weirdest news you’d hear this week, you’d be wrong. It seems that Earthworm Jim is coming back, with the entire original team, and it will be exclusive to the Intellivision Amico.

So, if you didn’t know, Intellivision is making a come back, or attempting to anyway. It’s spearheaded by Tommy Tallarico, video game composer and creator of the annual Video Games Live! concert. The system is said to be focusing on 2D games and aimed at families. Via his Twitter, Tallarico announced the game and its exclusivity to the Amico, which you can see below.

Earthworm Jim was a platformer originally released for the Sega Genesis about an earthworm who has an advanced robotic spacesuit and battles evil forces. It saw several sequels and re-releases through the years and even got a cartoon adaptation in the late ‘90s. Its odd humor and premise made it somewhat of a cult hit. It’s definitely an out of nowhere announcement, either way, and we’ll hopefully get a look at it soon.

It also sounds like it will bring back NES era Nintendo style QA policies.

With Atari throwing its hat back into the ring to put out a new console- though the Atari VCS may end up being a scam- it seems like one more classic console brand wants to put out a new machine. Tommy Tallarico, legendary for his contributions to music across movies, games, and, well, just plain old music, is the new Intellivision Entertainment president, and he intends on putting out a new console.

This new console sounds, er, interesting, according to reports by IGN and VentureBeat, both of whom had a chance to speak to Tallarico about it. The new Intellivision console will be cheap, and will not be sold on specs. It’s meant as a console for family gaming, will not have any 3D games (2.5D ones are fine), will not have any game rated higher than E10+ by the ESRB (so only kid friendly games), and won’t have any complicated games (with the exact quote by Tallarico being, “If you can’t explain the game in 10 seconds, or if it needs a manual, it’s not on our system.” Seriously).

This already sounds crazy, but it gets crazier- Tallarico wants to build a library of original games for the system, which means literally no ports will be allowed to be released for it. If you do manage to create an original game for this new Intellivision, it gets… interesting. Apparently, any game that is rated lower than 7/10 will not be allowed on the system. Rated lower than 7/10 by whom? We don’t know. What happens if you decided to make a game, exclusive to Intellivision (since ports aren’t allowed), and it was deemed not good enough? Well, either you lose out on your money, or Intellivision proposes how you can fix it, and you can try again. Great.

The console also won’t have any media functionality, but it will be online capable. It will have a controller mimicking the original Intellivision controller, by having a disc on it for control, as well as a touch screen instead of the keypad. Because emulating the Wii U is what you want to do with a new console. It plans to launch with 20-50 games, including classic Intellivision ones that may be updated, and will be included for free, and won’t launch until 2020 at the earliest.

To all of this, I can only say one thing: what? What? The one good thing I can say here is that Tallarico isn’t crowdfunding it, or asking people to pay for something that doesn’t yet exist, unlike Atari. But how is this console even conceptually a thing? There is absolutely no way, none, that this will survive on the market, not unless these policies are changed.

More details will be revealed on October 1.

A new console is on the way and it is being developed by Intellivision Entertainment. The development is being handled by Tommy Tallarico who has been a longtime fan of the original Intellivision console, and who is known as the creator of Video Games Live.

There’s not much we know regarding to expect from the console, but we were able to learn a few details from an interview Tallarico had with Venturebeat. The whole idea for the console is to target the family and not just the hardcore gamer. A number of people who had worked on the original Intellivision system will also be a part of this project.

Tallarico also stated that they obviously aren’t trying to compete with Nintendo or Sony consoles. As of now, no details have been released such as the launch date for the system. However, more details about the system will be revealed on October 1.

Are you excited about this new Intellivision system? Let us know in the comments.
