Black Myth: Wukong

Chinese developer Game Science’s upcoming Black Myth: Wukong is based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West, and players embark on a grand quest to fight all sorts of monsters scattered throughout the kingdom. The combat is extremely fast-paced yet methodical, with boss fights obviously being a highlight of the experience. You can also turn into an insect or a giant monster to overcome difficult situations, and it looks absolutely gorgeous thanks to great use of Unreal Engine 5. Black Myth: Wukong will release for PC sometime in the near future.

As spotted by a Reddit user, according to the LinkedIn page of Insomniac Games, the company currently employs 522 people, a significant increase from the aforementioned number. While the employee count on LinkedIn might not necessarily be a hundred percent accurate, it does clearly point to significant growth for the studio.

Given how many large-scale projects it currently has in the works, that doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is is due out this Fall, and according to Venom actor Tony Todd, is targeting a September release. Meanwhile, Marvel’s Wolverine is also in development, and according to leaks, is targeting a Fall 2024 launch. Multiple job ads have also indicated that Insomniac Games is also working on an unannounced multiplayer title.

Forspoken

Luminous Productions is finally rounding up work on the highly anticipated Forspoken, and it is due release on 24th January for PS5 and PC. Forspoken puts players in the shoes of Frey Holland, a former New Yorker who gets mystically transported to the land of Athia along with a sentient bracelet that gets magically attached to her hand. The traversal and combat look like a lot of fun, and there’s a lot to love here – ranging from the vast number of spells at your disposal to the many boss fights and open-world activities and so much more.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Insomniac Games has cemented itself as one of Sony’s top talents, and a lot of that can be attributed to its astounding work on Marvel’s Spider-Man and its follow-up Miles Morales. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will see Peter Parker and Miles Morales joining forces to face Venom and any other villains that may be pulling his strings. Not a lot is known about gameplay details at the moment, but fans can expect to know more about the game pretty soon since it is slated for release during 2023 for PS5.

Marvel’s Wolverine

Marvel’s Wolverine is yet another upcoming action adventure game from Insomniac Games, but sadly – we don’t have much information on the gameplay and story fronts at the moment. That said, it’s going to be interesting to see how the developer will translate its learnings from past projects to this brand new IP – and hopefully, it will turn out great as well. Marvel’s Wolverine releases for PS5 sometime in the near future.

Season: A Letter to the Future

Season: A Letter to the Future sees you taking control of Estelle, a young woman who embarks on a road trip across uncharted lands and picturesque valleys in search of new people and experiences. It is presented with a cel shaded aesthetic, and the gameplay looks pretty relaxing from what we have seen up until this point. We will be checking it out when it releases for PS4, PS5, and PC on January 31, 2023.

Final Fantasy 16

Not set in an open world, Final Fantasy 16 is poised to bring a grand adventure for fans of the RPG genre. You play as Clive Rosefield, as he gets embroiled in a war against ever-growing corruption. The combat will be a mix of turn-based and real-time action. It’s set to release for PS5 on June 23rd, 2023.

Horizon: Call of the Mountain

Firesprite Games’ upcoming Horizon: Call of the Mountain will launch alongside the much-anticipated PSVR2 on 22 February, 2023. The game is obviously set in the Horizon universe, but you will taking the role of a new protagonist Ryas – a former Shadow Carja warrior on a quest for redemption. The story premise sounds interesting, and hopefully – the PSVR2 will also open up new avenues for interactive gameplay as well.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Silent Hill 2 is still considered as one of the best survival horror games of all time, and after a healthy dose of rumors – Konami has finally confirmed that a full-fledged remake is in the works at Bloober Team. Details are scant at the moment, but the developers are teasing radical improvements in terms of AI and world design among other things. It will be released for PC and PS5 sometime in the near future.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands tall as one of the finest RPGs of all time, and it’s only natural that fans would want to replay this one hell of a game with high-fidelity visuals and modern gameplay. Thankfully, the developer is hard at work on a full-fledged remake that should check all of these boxes – and it will release for PS5 and PC sometime in the near future.

Death Stranding 2 (Working Title)

Death Stranding may not have started life on a strong note, but countless fans have now warmed up to this unique experience since its release over 3 years ago – who have been craving for a sequel. Death Stranding 2 is finally in the works, and while the story trailer is as cryptic as ever – we do know that Sam Porter and Fragile will play an important role in the story, and that players can expect to ride new vehicles like the unicycle that we saw in the same trailer. It will be released for PS5 and PC in the near future.

The Dark Pictures: Switchback

Supermassive Games has been delivering hit after hit with its The Dark Pictures Anthology games, and The Dark Pictures: Switchback looks like an attempt to translate that success to Sony’s newest VR platform. It’s set to be a high-octane rollercoaster ride filled to the brim with horrific encounters, complete with antagonistic forces that players have faced in Anthology Season 1. The developer has stated that it will be utilizing the PSVR2 features to make horror more personal than before, and that has us excited to jump into Switchback when it releases on 22 February, 2023.

Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores Expansion

Horizon Forbidden West is easily one of the best games of 2022, thanks to a gorgeous open-world that’s filled to the brim with dangerous creatures and lovable characters. While there’s no shortage of things to do in Forbidden West, many fans are craving for more of the same – and the Burning Shores expansion aims to do just that. Taking place in a dilapidated Los Angeles, this expansion will feature brand new story content, machines and environmental threats such as active volcanoes. Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores expansion releases exclusively for PS5 on April 19, 2023.

Pacific Drive

Pacific Drive looks like a weird but beautiful mix of genres; it’s as much a game about driving as it is about survival. The basic goal is to drive a busted up station wagon out of a hazardous environment, but in order to do that – you have to upgrade your vehicle with resources scattered throughout the environment which will help you inch closer to the finish line. In addition to that, the developer is also teasing some mystery elements in the experience, so we can expect Pacific Drive to have a lot of gameplay variety too. It releases for PS5 and PC sometime this year.

Goodbye Volcano High

Goodbye Volcano High is a cinematic adventure that takes you through the teenage years of protagonist Fang as they grapple with the many highs and lows of high school. Of course, decision making will be crucial for the final outcome of this branching narrative – and players can also blow off steam by playing different instruments with rhythm-based minigames among other distractions. The visual presentation looks charming with hand-drawn art and expressive animations, and hopefully the narrative will tug at all the right strings as well. Goodbye Volcano High releases for PS4, PS5, and PC sometime this year.

Lost Soul Aside

Another upcoming hack and slash game on the list, developer UtilZero’s Lost Soul Aside definitely carries a lot of action adventure influences on its sleeve. You take control of a warrior and a shapeshifting companion as the duo embarks on a grand adventure in a futuristic dystopia. The visuals are really crisp, and the action is aptly brutal – which makes Lost Soul Aside a game worth rooting for. It releases for PS4 and PS5 sometime in the near future.

Tchia

Awaceb’s Tchia describes itself as a tropical open-world adventure, and that’s really the best description that one can have for this game. It looks like a delightful and relaxing adventure as you use Tchia’s powers to set off on a quest to save her father from the clutches of a tyrant. The traversal looks promising, mostly thanks to Tchia’s ability to take on the form of creatures like birds and dogs. In addition to this, you can also sail the surrounding seas or jam out to your favorite tunes on a fully playable Ukulele. Tchia releases for PS5, PS4, and PC sometime in the near future.

Before we kick off- it’s worth mentioning that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is headed to PC later this year, while Marvel’s Avengers, for all of its many troubles, continues to get updated, with more content apparently being in the works at Crystal Dynamics. From this point forward, however, we’re only talking about full new upcoming releases.

MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN 2

Let’s start off with the one that’s probably the biggest of all the games Marvel currently has in the pipeline. Insomniac’s open world Spider-Man title in 2018 was a massive critical and commercial success, so obviously, there’s no shortage of people who’re keenly anticipating the launch of its sequel. Starring Venom as one of the central antagonists (and possibly Carnage, based on hints in its reveal trailer), Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will bring back both Peter Parker and Miles Morales as playable characters in what will hopefully be yet another spectacular single player adventure. Up until this point, details on the game have been scant, but with Sony currently planning a 2023 launch for the superhero title, the hope is that we’ll be learning more very, very soon.

MARVEL’S WOLVERINE

Of course, Spider-Man 2 isn’t the only Marvel title that Insomniac currently has in development. Within seconds of unveiling it, Insomniac and Sony also announced Marvel’s Wolverine last year, and even though all we’ve seen of the game so far is a very brief cinematic trailer, the excitement surrounding it is already palpable. Insomniac is promising an original story with a mature tone (which makes sense, given that this is a Wolverine game), and if the developer can adapt the iconic property as well as it adapted Spider-Man, we’re going to be in for an absolute treat. Here’s hoping we get to learn more about the game in the not-too-distant future.

EA’S IRON MAN GAME

Given how massively popular Iron Man has been in all media over the last decade and a half, it’s honestly a little surprising that we’ve yet to see a major AAA video game adaptation of the property- but hey, better late than never, right? Of all the games in this feature, this is the most freshly announced title, with EA and Marvel Games recently having confirmed that Motive Studio – the developer behind Star Wars: Squadrons and the upcoming Dead Space remake – is working on a single player AAA Iron Man action-adventure game that will tell a new and original story. Details on the game are very scant right now, what with it only recently having entered pre-production, but the prospect of a AAA story-driven single player Iron Man game developed by a competent studio is an exciting one, to say the very least.

SKYDANCE NEW MEDIA’S CAPTAIN AMERICA AND BLACK PANTHER GAME

Now this is an interesting one. Last year, Skydance New Media confirmed that it was working on a new story-driven single player action-adventure Marvel game, with its development team being led by the legendary Amy Hennig, creator of the Uncharted franchise. And while concrete details on the game are still largely missing, more recently, it was confirmed that the game will be set in the Second World War and star Captain America and the Black Panther of that era. With two beloved Marvel superheroes sharing the spotlight with two other regular characters with no superpowers – all four of them being playable – the potential for the game to deliver a very unique story and gameplay experience is immense. Again, details are scant here- we don’t know the game’s name, we don’t know when it will be out, and we haven’t seen any gameplay at all yet. But the developers have confirmed that it’s going to be a very cinematic experience with high production values – which, of course, is very much in Amy Hennig’s wheelhouse – and that it will be a purely single player experience, which should probably spell good things for the game’s storytelling (on paper, at least).

MARVEL’S MIDNIGHT SUNS

Marvel clearly loves action-adventure titles, seeing as every game we’ve spoken about up until this point falls in that category, but another major Marvel game – the one that’s closest to launch, in fact – is going to be a rather different experience. Firaxis is taking its turn-based tactics expertise and applying it to the upcoming Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a game that will star an ensemble cast featuring beloved names like Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel, and many more.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is, of course, going to be an RPG, which means players are going to get a much greater degree of control over how they want these iconic heroes to progress- while building relationships and friendships with them and getting to know them better on a much more personal level is also going to be a crucial component of the experience. Meanwhile, we’ll also get to create our very own original Marvel superhero dubbed The Hunter- which is a massively exciting prospect in and of itself. There’s a ton of potential here for this game to turn out to be something truly special, and developer Firaxis’ excellent track record over the years certainly inspires plenty of confidence about the same.

MARVEL SNAP

Sure, there’s a bevy of major console games coming out based on Marvel properties in the coming couple of years, but a game in the mobile space (and PC) that’s also worth keeping an eye on is Marvel Snap. A collectible card game developed by former Hearthstone devs, Marvel Snap is being billed as the fastest CCG on the market, and given the talent behind it, there’s every reason to be optimistic. As is the case with pretty much every free-to-play game, the monetization factor is a bit of a worry – and sure enough, Marvel Snap has already come under fire for that very reason – but if developer Second Dinner Studios can get the balance right on that front, we’re likely looking at a game that one could easily sink dozens (if not hundreds) of hours into.

RUMOURED: EA’S BLACK PANTHER GAME

EA’s Iron Man game isn’t the only Marvel game the company has in the works. The publisher has confirmed that it is working on several projects based on Marvel properties, and if leaks are to be believed, one of those games is a single player open world Black Panther game. You don’t need us to tell you why that’s an incredibly exciting prospect. Black Panther is, of course, a fascinating character, while you can’t help but salivate at the idea of a AAA open world game set in Wakanda, where you’re free to move about and act as the nation’s king. Given the fact that rumours of EA’s Iron Man and Black Panther projects emerged around the same time, we’d say there’s plenty of merit to these claims. But of course, until such time the game gets officially confirmed to be in development, we can’t be too sure. Here’s hoping, then, that we do hear more about it in an official capacity sometime relatively soon.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Developer Fatshark’s upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a co-op survival game set against the backdrop of the Warhammer 40k universe. Assuming the role of Inquisition soldiers, players have to take the charge of defeating waves upon waves of cultists before they shatter the planet of Atoma Prime to pieces. Gameplay primarily revolves around defeating enemies using long-range weaponry, although players will also have the option to get up close and personal with enemies using melee weapons.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide releases for all major console platforms and PC sometime in 2022.

Sifu

Slocap, the developer behind the martial-arts-based Absolver, is returning back to its roots once again with Sifu. Players assume the role of a king fu student who sets out to exact revenge for the death of his family. Sifu is built around a very interesting mortality mechanic, wherein players will age by a certain number upon death – which has repercussions on stats like health and damage. It goes a lot deeper than just that, of course – and with a distinct art style and deep combat system, Sifu seems to be shaping up really well. It’s currently slated for release on February 8th, 2022.
