"We would like to leave that decision up to the players themselves," says series producer Noriaki Okamura regarding the upcoming remake.

With the August 28 release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater looming over the horizon, protagonist Naked Snake’s voice actor, David Hayter, along with series producer Noriaki Okamura have said that they want to leave it up to players if the remake replaces or complements the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

In an interview with PC Gamer magazine (via GamesRadar), Okamura spoke about how he sees the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta as both a replacement to, and a companion for the classic Snake Eater. This, he explains, is why Konami made the original Snake Eater available on all modern platforms through the release of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1.

He explained that younger players and those new to the Metal Gear franchise might feel more comfortable playing the remake rather than the original, owing to the classic’s more esoteric control scheme and the remake’s modern visuals. Long-time fans of Metal Gear, however, might find it better as a companion piece to the original.

“For new users who are just getting started with the MGS series, MGS Delta may be more familiar. For long-time MGS series fans, the Master Collection version may feel superior,” he said. Ultimately, however, Okamura believes that “we would like to leave that decision up to the players themselves.”

As for Hayter, he doesn’t have a firm opinion on whether or not Delta acts as a replacement to the original Snake Eater. He does, however, note that he recently played the original Metal Gear Solid – first released back in 1998 – and pointed out that it’s still a fun and engaging game. In that regard, Hayter seemingly believes that the original games still stand firm on their own merits.

“I was literally playing the original Metal Gear Solid a couple days ago, and it’s still a banger,” he said, going on the ponder, “Will [Delta] replace [MGS3]? I don’t know. I just think it’s a different, upgraded version.”

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While it is slated to be largely faithful to the 2004 original, the remake is also going to have a number of extra options for modern players, including the ability to pick between a modern control scheme and the classic style of controls. The game will also mark the return of Secret Theater – a feature from the original Snake Eater that featured joke cutscenes with the game’s characters.

However, Konami has confirmed that the Secret Theater feature in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will not feature the same upgraded visuals as the rest of the game. Rather, they will retain the PS2-era visuals from the original. Creative producer Yuji Korekado revealed that this decision was made because the cutscene director believed the gags to be funnier in the original art style.

While you wait for the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, here is everything you might need to know about the game. Also check out details about the remake’s new online Fox Hunt game mode.

These titles are defined by their unforgettable stories and characters, stellar world-building and design, impeccable gameplay, and more.

With how long and illustrious the history of gaming has been, picking the best games of all time is almost impossible. Nevertheless, it’s worth highlighting the best titles launched across all those generations, what made them special and why you should check them out. Without further ado, here are our picks for the top 30 games of all time, starting with…

30. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

Perfection in a video game doesn’t come easy, but Polyphony Digital has come closer than most with several of its Gran Turismo titles. Despite cutting back on the number of cars, Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is arguably the best of the bunch in terms of physics, AI, and sound (and even its visuals still hold up today). That’s before getting into the improvements with car shops, Gran Turismo Mode, and the long-awaited arrival of Formula One cars.

The beloved stealth classic's upcoming remake may not be changing much from a design perspective, but maybe it doesn't need to.

Ten years on from the point where it looked like the Metal Gear franchise would never return, it’s about to return. Coming back from a decade-long hiatus (yes, I’m deliberately erasing Metal Gear Survive from my memory), the legendary stealth series is gearing up to take centerstage again with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 that is perfectly positioned to prove beyond doubt (yet again) that the 2004 game remains a stealth masterclass to this day with the sort of timeless design and excellence that few games in the genre have been able to match up to in the two-plus decades since it released.

Of course, this isn’t the first Konami franchise to return from a hiatus of late, and not the first to do it with a remake of arguably its most widely beloved game. Less than a year ago, Konami and Bloober team wowed one and all with a remake of Silent Hill 2, a survival horror spectacle that turned out to be a far better game than Bloober Team’s previously spotty track record had led many – ourselves included – to believe it would be. Though Metal Gear Solid Delta isn’t necessarily taking the same approach. Silent Hill 2 struck a great balance between sticking to the original script and bringing its own ideas to the table, serving as a remarkably expanded and overhauled remake that kept the original’s core intact.

But where Silent Hill 2 straddled the line between those two paths, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is committing itself almost exclusively to just one- that of faithful recreation, rather than radical reimagination. On one hand, you have to admit that that can raise some issues that, for many, might not be minor by any means. Take, for instance, the fact that Metal Gear Solid Delta will, just like the original, separate screens and areas from each other, rather than making the entire play space seamless the way you would imagine things to be in a AAA game releasing in 2025. For those who were hoping for a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake that would not only recreate, but upgrade its gameplay experience, that’s likely a frustrating decision on Konami’s part, and it’s a position that I do have sympathy for.

At the same time, I can’t help but take some solace from the fact that Konami is choosing not to mess with perfection. Because, really, in so many ways, that is what Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater achieves from a game design and stealth gameplay perspective- perfection. Playing the original classic today even in its original form, it’s hard not to be blown away by how good and fun it feels to play. It’s a tightly designed, compact experience that wastes none of itself on anything that doesn’t contribute to its incredible gameplay core. Purely as a stealth experience, Metal Gear Solid 3 is still right up there as one of the best games in the genre even today- not just because of its legacy (which is unimpeachable, to say the least), but also because of its astonishing enduring quality.

So yes, it is somewhat of a bummer that Konami isn’t taking the opportunity with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater to do some really ambitious gameplay reworks, and that the remake is, from a gameplay and design perspective, going to play things quite safe. But a) playing it safe is exactly what Konami needs to do right now with Metal Gear, given the state that the franchise has been in (thanks to Konami) this past decade, and b) the game that we’re going to get is still Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid 3 is – I cannot stress this enough – an absolute blast.

There are obviously parts of the original MGS3 that do need updating. As great as it is, it is not a perfect game, and especially by today’s standards, there are parts of it that are pretty rough and janky. But thankfully, those parts of the game are getting the facelift that they require. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s centerpiece is going to be its massive, radical visual and technical overhaul, which, from all that we’ve seen so far, is breathing new life into the game. Overhauling the visuals, modernizing the experience with quality-of-life upgrades, and sanding out its rough edges with passes of polish might not be the most exciting way to deal with a major, flagship remake- but where MGS3 is concerned, it’s a smart approach. Update the parts of the game that need it the most, and the parts that are still great – the gameplay and the design (not to mention the unforgettable story, of course, but that’s a different topic) – will be able to shine brighter than ever before.

“But look at Metal Gear Solid 5!” you say, and you know what? It’s hard not to agree with that at least a little bit. For all of its flaws and inconsistencies, Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain is an absolutely spectacular stealth game – one of the very best ever made – and it does so with completely seamless open world design. A Metal Gear Solid 3 remake that built on those foundations (but, you know, with a more densely populated world that didn’t have the hammer brought down on it partway through development) was the dream for many, and indisputably, if done well, that would have been an exciting way to bring Metal Gear back.

But again, that’s not something that anyone is ready to trust Konami with just yet- and that clearly includes Konami itself, too. And if the alternative to a faithful Metal Gear Solid 3 remake was no Metal Gear game at all, I’ll gladly take the former, because, at the risk of repeating myself MGS3 is still an incredible stealth game- one that can stand up to the biggest and AAAest modern games out there, and barring some very rare exceptions, come out on top every single time.

If Konami continues remaking more Metal Gear Solid games – which, let’s face it, they probably will if Delta proves to be a critical and commercial success – expectations would be high that they’d be more ambitious with their remaking efforts. But as their first mainline Kojima-less Metal Gear outing after the franchise was given a swift and bitter (and public) execution years ago, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is smartly playing to its source material’s strengths, which is allowing it to take the safest possible route. That route might be a bit too unexciting for many, especially given how successful the less conventional remakes like Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 have been in recent years, but it is still a route that’s going to let us play through a stealth masterpiece.

Of course, that is all contingent on the fact that Konami doesn’t royally mess things up with Metal Gear Solid Delta. But then again, that’s the point- that first by picking Metal Gear Solid 3 as the game to remake, and then by choosing to stick as close to the source material as possible, the company is, at least on paper, giving itself the best possible chance of success. Whether things will pan out that way remains to be seen, but we’re cautiously optimistic, at the very least.

We take a look at 15 amazing games that had the perfect length.

As we have seen more than a few times over the years, nailing down the right length can be a surprisingly tricky for games to do. Even the best of games have often deemed to be either a bit too long or a bit too short, while those that are particularly brief or lengthy can find themselves on the receiving end of stronger criticism. That’s why you can never quite take games that know exactly how long they need to be for granted. Here, we’ll be talking about a few such games.

PORTAL 2

With a main story about 8-9 hours long, Portal 2 is nearly thrice as long as its predecessor, but just like its predecessor, feels like the perfect length. Valve’s ingenious puzzler sequel throws in plenty of new mechanics and design ideas on top of the first game’s foundations, and over the course of its meticulously chiseled runtime, gets absolutely everything out of all of its best ideas.

Whether it's showcasing damage realistically or simulating fractures and conditions, these games are worth checking out.

Video games are embraced for their escapism, but sometimes, players want some realism thrown in. They want to stimulate the trials and tribulations that could result from realistic injuries without actually receiving any (which is understandable). Fortunately, there are several titles out there which can accurately model injuries, if not showcase them in neat cosmetic ways. Let’s take a look at 15 such titles here.

Prey

While they can be turned off, Traumas add much more to the experience in Arkane Studios’ Prey. Concussions can cause blurry vision and reduce psi capacity. Fear reduces firearm accuracy and impacts your vision. All of these require treatment with different items or from visiting a medical operator and reinforce the importance of, say, Thermal Shielding to prevent third-degree burns or Fear Shielding to reduce the duration of, well, Fear.

Amidst rumours of a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, we look at other instalments in the series that could do with modern reimaginings.

Konami is jumping back into AAA development with the revival of Silent Hill, and there are legions of fans who’re hoping that Metal Gear Solid will be the publisher’s next franchise to rise from the ashes. Leaks have certainly claimed time and again that an MGS revival is very much on the cards, and that a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is in development and due to be announced in the coming months. But hypothetically, are there perhaps other games in the franchise that remakes would make even more sense for?

For instance, take the original Metal Gear Solid. Now two and a half decades old, MGS1 remains one of the greatest games ever made, and in spite of its age, going back to it to play it in today’s day and age is still a hell of a lot of fun. But it’s also the sort of game that would benefit massively from a big budget remake in the hands of a capable developer. The most obvious reason for that is the the massive visual and technological leap that a hypothetical MGS1 remake would take over the original, to the point where it would almost feel like a new game, much like Resident Evil 2 and its 2019 remake.

One would imagine that a modern Metal Gear Solid remake would also make plenty of changes on the gameplay front. The series has, after all, evolved drastically with each new instalment over the years, and those improvements and evolutions would likely retrofitted into MGS1 to bring it more in line with what you’d expect to see from a AAA stealth game today. And again, much like the gameplay changes that 2019’s Resident Evil 2 made, such changes in an MGS1 remake would have a ripple effect on other things on the gameplay front as well, from boss fights to level design and more.

All of that sounds incredibly exciting, of course- after all, who wouldn’t want to plan an expanded, enhanced, and modernized take on one of the greatest games ever made? So yeah, it’s exciting- but it’s also just a best case scenario. Yes, a Metal Gear Solid 1 remake in the hands of a developer that was up to the task would be something to behold, but the chances of a development team actually being on that level and sticking the landing in all the ways it would need to would also be quite thin. Especially given the fact that series mastermind Hideo Kojima would be very unlikely to be involved with any such project, the risk of messing things up and not being able to do justice to the source material might perhaps be too much to cope with.

Interestingly, MGS1 isn’t the only retro entry in the series that Metal Gear fans would like to see remakes for. Many in the fanbase have often floated the idea of Konami going back even further and developing a combined remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2, taking the MSX duo and reimagining it completely as a modern AAA stealth experience that stands toe to toe with the games it spawned over the course of decades. Much like Metal Gear Solid 1, a remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2 would bring with it a completely overhaul of the gameplay, visuals, and design- maybe even to a greater degree. In fact, a similar overhaul might also be needed for the story and the way it’s told, especially if this hypothetical remake sets out to connect the original duology’s story with future instalments in a more cohesive fashion.

But again, a remake of this nature would be quite a risky proposition, even if for different reasons. Metal Gear 1 and 2 obviously don’t have the kind of legacy that Metal Gear Solid 1 does, so a combined remake of the two maybe wouldn’t be as beholden to the source material, and might have more freedom to change things on a wider scale. But given the level of kind of changes such a remake would be making, would it even still be Metal Gear 1 and 2 anymore? Above all that, do the two MSX games even have the kind of mass market pull that Konami would want from a major new Metal Gear release? Would such a project even be greenlit?

That leaves us with Metal Gear Solid 3- which might actually have been the safest choice for Konami in terms of deciding which game to remake. If reports of Metal Gear Solid 3 being remade are indeed true, then it’s not hard to see why Konami greenlit the project. It’s a widely beloved game, to the point that the majority of the fanbase considers it to be the series’ best instalment, so the hype and excitement that a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake would generate already gives it a massive leg up over most other games in the franchise. It’s also easy to imagine how a well-made bid budget remake could improve and expand upon a game that’s already an unabashed masterpiece.

At the same time, however, modernizing MGS3 wouldn’t be as risky and as monumental of a task as modernizing something like MGS1 would be. Yes, Snake Eater is a nearly two decade old game, and there’s a lot about its gameplay – especially its camera and movement – that hasn’t aged well, but it’s also much closer to modern design sensibilities than the original Metal Gear Solid was. The scale of changes and overhauling that would need to be implemented in a Snake Eater remake wouldn’t be nearly as daunting as it would be for MGS1, in terms of story, design, or mechanics.

The question, once again, is whether there’s a development team out there that’s up to the monumental task of doing justice to Metal Gear Solid 3 with a modern take on it. If leaks are to be believed, the remake is being developed by Singapore-based studio Virtuos, which has spent the majority of its time over the years working on ports and remasters. Is a studio like that equipped to deal with a massive AAA production, especially one that has so much riding on it? Sure, it’s likely that Konami will be exerting plenty of creative control over a project such as this one- but given the last decade or so, it’s not exactly easy to place too much faith in Konami either.

The truth is that without Kojima involved, any new Metal Gear Solid project is going to be received with its fair share of skeptics and doubters, and given how crucial the man has been to the series and its very identity for so long, it’s easy to understand why. Given these circumstances, Metal Gear Solid 3 does seem like a smart choice for the game to bring the series back from the dead- it’s the series’ most beloved entry to date, it’s old enough that a well-made remake could make some significant improvements over it, but not old enough that the changes would have to be too radical. The elements are certainly in place to make an excellent remake that helps reverse the franchise’s fortunes. We just hope Virtuos proves equal to the task at hand- if the leaks are accurate, that is.

Metal Gear Solid voice actor and singer Donna Burke is working on a new rendition of "Snake Eater", but it's not for a remake.

A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has been in the rumour mill for a while now, with reports claiming that the project is being developed y Singapore-based studio Virtuos, and recent developments flared up those rumours once again.

Activity on Twitter by Metal Gear Solid voice actor and singer Donna Burke suggested that she was working on a new rendition of the Metal Gear Solid 3 main theme, “Snake Eater”, potentially for a remake, but it seems that’s only half-right.

In a follow-up tweet, Mason Lieberman – a senior composer at Tencent and director of the project Burke tweeted about – quickly quashed rumours, explaining that while he and Burke are working on the Snake Eater theme, it’s not related a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake.

The Metal Gear Solid 3 remake nonetheless remains a hotly anticipated title- or its announcement does, at any rate. Reports have claimed that Konami intended on revealing the game at E3 2023, but with the event having been cancelled, there’s no word on how those plans may have changed. Recently, it was claimed that the game was targeting a 2024 launch.

VGC claims Konami has big plans in place for this year's E3, with revivals of two of its biggest properties set to be unveiled.

Now that the long-awaited revival of Silent Hill is well and truly underway, many have turned their attention to some of Konami’s other major franchises that have been lying dormant for years, and questions about when they, too, might step back into the limelight have been asked often. In 2021, a VGC report claimed that a new Castlevania game and a Virtuos-developed Metal Gear Solid 3 remake were both in the works– and it seems both those games could be announced soon.

The same has been claimed by VGC on the first episode of its new podcast. Allegedly, Konami has “big” plans in place for E3 2023, which is scheduled for June 13-16, where the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake and a new mainline Castlevania game will both be unveiled.

It’s also claimed that Konami is still unsure about how to proceed with the previously rumoured remasters of older Metal Gear Solid games. Allegedly, Metal Gear Solid 3’s remake and how well it is received will be used as a “testbed” to make further decisions on what to do with older Metal Gear titles.

Earlier this year, veteran Konami producer Noriaki Okamura said that the company is planning to make announcements for “long awaited” games in 2023.

Imprisonment in video games can be oppressive but there's a lot of fun in breaking out and tasting freedom. Check out 10 games with great prison breaks.

Of all the different mission types in video games, prison escapes are some of the most enticing. There’s the dread of being trapped, followed by the anticipation of planning one’s escape. And the feeling of freedom – along with potentially exacting revenge on one’s captors – is also sweet. Let’s take a look at 10 of the most intense prison escape sequences in games.

Prison Heist – Dying Light

The free Prison Heist DLC exists outside of the main and sees Kyle Crane infiltrating a prison full of guards and Infected for supplies, weapons, and more. Upon entering, the player must dispatch guards and navigate multiple cell blocks, fighting off Infected along the way (with things getting even crazier as multiple Volatiles are discovered). This culminates in a battle with waves of Virals, including two Demolishers, before the prison’s armory is unsealed. But that’s not the end. A timer starts counting down and you need to grab the loot inside and escape before it expires. All in all, a great test of one’s combat and parkour prowess, not to mention an awesome speed-running exercise.
