Subscribers will have until May 9 to redeem the limited library's games if they wish to keep them.

Sony has been playing catch-up with Microsoft when it comes to subscription services for some time now, but the company has taken some significant steps in the space. While the revamping of PlayStation Plus last year was obviously the biggest of those steps, another early introduction that sort of served as its precursor was the introduction of the PlayStation Plus Collection– a curated library of some of best PS4 games, available for free on PS5 to all PlayStation Plus subscribers.

That library, however, isn’t going to stick around for much longer. In a recent PlayStation Blog update, Sony announced that starting May 9, PlayStation Plus Collection will no longer be available. Of course, those who’ve already redeemed games from the collection will get to keep them (as long as you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber), which means you have until May 9 to do so in case you haven’t already.

Sony hasn’t given any specific reasons as to why the collection is being taken down, but presumably, the company wants to focus its efforts on its offerings via PlayStation Plus. “We will continue to add to our growing PlayStation Plus library of Monthly Games and Games Catalog, so be sure to check monthly for new titles to redeem,” Sony writes.

Shortly after the PS Plus Collection was first revealed, when asked if Sony had any plans to add more games to the catalog down the right, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said the company would take a “wait and see” approach. Clearly, Sony has made the decision to axe the collection and instead focus on PS Plus as a whole.

Sony confirms that Atlus' beloved JRPG is leaving the PlayStation Plus Collection in May, though those who've added the game to their library will still be able to play it afterward.

The revamped PlayStation Plus is going to launch in June, and across the upper two of its three subscription tiers, the service will offer a collective catalog of over 700 games from throughout the history of PlayStation (minus the PS Vita). Amidst all these changes, Sony has provided assurances that the PlayStation Plus Collection – the curated catalog of some of the biggest PS4 games that is available to all PS Plus subscribers on a PS5 – will still be part of the service’s base tier– though shortly before that, it’ll see one key change

Sony recently announced the lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus in April, and in the same post on the PlayStation Blog, also confirmed that Persona 5 will be leaving the PlayStation Plus Collection on May 11. Those who have added the game to their library by then will still be able to play the game afterward, as long as you’ve got an active PS Plus subscription.

This development does raise a couple of interesting questions, specifically with regard to what sort of agreements Sony has with the publishers whose games are included in the PS Plus Collection, and whether we can expect anymore of those to leave the catalog in the future.

Either way, if you have a PS Plus subscription, make sure to add Persona 5 to your library before its removed from the collection- unless you already have it, of course.

Even after the new tiers debut in June, PlayStation Plus subscribers will still have access to the same 20 PS4 titles on PS5.

PlayStation Plus is undergoing a revamp in June with Sony recently announcing three new tiers. Current subscribers will be converted into the Essential tier (which remains the same price). However, with the Extra and Premium tiers having access to over 400 PS4 and PS5 titles, what does this mean for PlayStation Plus Collection?

The PS Plus Collection launched in November 2020 alongside the PS5 and offered access to 20 different PS4 titles like God of War (2018), Persona 5 and so on. Thankfully, it seems this won’t be changing. Sony recently confirmed to IGN senior editor and PlayStation lead Jonathon Dornbush that the PS Plus Collection will be staying.

All PS5 players with PlayStation Plus can continue to access the Collection as before. The all-new PlayStation Plus will cost $10 per month for the Essential tier; $15 per month and $100 per year for the Extra tier; and $18 per month and $120 per year for the Premium tier. Premium tier subscribers also gain access to PS1, PS2 and PSP titles via cloud streaming and digital downloads while PS3 titles can be streamed.

Though the new PlayStation Plus won’t have day one first party launches, “things can change very quickly” as per PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan. Stay tuned for more details on the various games included with the service in the coming months.

Many are selling unlocked PS Plus libraries to PS4 owners.

With a curated library of twenty of the best games from the PS4’s library – including the likes of God of War, Monster Hunter World, Persona 5, The Last of Us Remastered, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, and many, many more – the PlayStation Plus Collection is a solid deal that PS5 owners with PS Plus subscriptions have been able to avail.

PlayStation Plus Collection, however, is only meant for the PS5. There are many, however, who are exploiting a loophole in how it works to make a quick buck. Logging into a PS5 with your account unlocks the PS Plus Collection and adds it to your library, and many have been logging into their PS5s to unlock the collection on people’s PS4 consoles in exchange for money.

Sony, however, has been stamping down on those making use of this exploit. As per several posts on the Chinese forum A9VG (as discovered by VGC), Sony has banned thousands of PSN accounts in response to this exploit already. When (or if) Sony will come up with a more permanent solution to get rid of the loophole entirely remains to be seen.

Recently, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said that Sony are as of yet undecided on whether or not to expand PlayStation Plus Collection’s library as time goes on. A couple of games were added to the catalog shortly before the PS5’s launch, so perhaps it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Jim Ryan isn’t sure where the service goes from here.

The PS5 is here, and well, there may not be a lot of next gen only games to play on it (like…3 maybe?), there’s still a lot to play if you’re willing to go back. For those who have PlayStation Plus, for instance, there’s a select amount of titles you can get as part of the service, some of the biggest and best from the PS4 era, which even got a little extra right before the system launched. Will there be even more? Well, it seems Sony isn’t sure just yet.

Doing his interview rounds, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan spoke with GQ and when asked about expanding the collection, he was upfront in saying he wasn’t sure exactly where they were going with the collection. The main aim of it was for early adapters of the PS5 to be able and go back and miss the big titles they didn’t get to. They’ll have to see just how much use comes before dedicating more to it.

“Well, we’re going to wait and see how the world receives the Plus Collection. You know, which games are played how much they’re played before we make any decisions about that. We think it’s potentially going to be a great user acquisition tool. Arguably if you never had a PS4 and you choose to buy a PS5 you basically get a PS4, right?”

The list of titles available in the Collection is already pretty solid, but more would be welcome. Ryan seemed to also hint some kind of answer to Xbox’s Game Pass could be in the works, so it’s not hard to see them attempting to grow this into something much more. We’ll just have to wait and see how it develops.
