Former PlayStation employee Jerry Liu noted in his LinkedIn profile that his work at the company involved growing revenue for the division.

Recent rumors indicating that Sony will make an official announcement about ending its trend of bringing single-player PlayStation Studios titles to PC might be enough to make one wonder just how much money the company made with its ports of games like God of War Ragnarök or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While far from an official confirmation, a former employee’s LinkedIn profile may provide some answers.

Former PC Planner and Insights Manager at PlayStation, Jerry Liu, who worked at the company between January 2021 and June 2023, has noted that his work at Sony helped the unit “grow from $0-300M in net revenue” over the span of three years.

To achieve this, his responsibilities included optimizing promotional strategies and forecasting budgets for PlayStation’s PC portfolio, providing insight and business cases to try and convince leadership to “pursue more aggressive pricing” strategies, analyzing the PlayStation back catalog, and developing forecast models and sales targets. Interestingly, he noted that his strategies for aggressive pricing led to an increase in gross revenue from PC releases by 25 percent.

Last month, a report had indicated that Sony was originally going to bring its recent and upcoming single-player titles—namely, last year’s Ghost of Yōtei and the upcoming Saros—to PC. However, the company has seemingly decided against this and has cancelled work on any ports that were in progress. According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, those “familiar with the company’s plans” said that a “faction within PlayStation” was unsure about porting its first-party games over to PC to begin with.

A major reason for this was apparently the belief that it would harm the sales of PlayStation hardware in the long term. While PS5 sales would also be affected, subsequent console releases might have also started facing trouble, as well as the brand as a whole.

In a more recent forum post, Schreier had said that Sony was going to make its plans to stop releasing single-player games on PC official “at some point.” It is unknown, however, when this will be, and could range from a simple social media post to a comment to its investors during an earnings call.

Despite these plans, however, Sony wants to continue bringing multiplayer titles to PC alongside their PS5 releases. The immense success of Helldivers 2 likely had a role to play in this, and upcoming games like Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Horizon Hunters Gathering are already confirmed for PC releases. This move makes sense, since cross-platform multiplayer on these titles also ends up ensuring that PS5 players won’t have to worry about low player counts with PC players bolstering the game.

This also means that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach might very well be the last single-player PlayStation game to come out on PC. However, it is worth noting that Kojima Productions isn’t a first-party developer under PlayStation Studios. Sony simply published the game, and likely has little say on whether or not the studio brings its games to more platforms. A report from last week has indicated that its PC launch was quite successful too, with more than 2 million sales since release.

This could happen in a call with investors or via Housemarque confirming that Saros is not coming to PC, per Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is out now on PC, having garnered incredible praise and a solid peak concurrent player count on Steam. However, it may be the exception to Sony’s rumored plans to no longer release its major first-party single-player titles on PC. Ghost of Yōtei, for example, was allegedly coming to PC until plans were scrapped.

And while there’s always the possibility Sony changes course, it’s reportedly looking to solidify this stance soon. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said on Resetera that the company would confirm the same “at some point,” “whether it’s on a call with investors or maybe even when Housemarque starts doing press for Saros, and someone asks if they have plans to bring it to PC and they say no.”

Given how Returnal, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and other high-profile ports have performed on PC, it’s somewhat understandable that Sony is pulling back. Of course, there’s also the possibility that it doesn’t want to make future titles playable on Microsoft’s Project Helix, the next-generation console that will play both Xbox and PC games.

Which isn’t to say that no PlayStation Studios titles will ever launch for the same – see Horizon Hunters Gathering, coming to PS5 and PC. However, Sony is seemingly aware of the value its single-player titles bring, especially when they’re console-exclusive.

As always, we’ll need to wait for official confirmation, so stay tuned. Saros launches on April 30th for PS5, followed by Marvel’s Wolverine on September 15th.

Adverse effects on the sales of the PS5, along with potential damage to the brand, reportedly contributed to the decision.

Last week, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier claimed that PlayStation would no longer bring its first-party single-player titles to PC. It was supported by insider NateTheHate, who reported that the publisher decided this last year. In a new story, Schreier offered even more details, including that Ghost of Yōtei and Saros are allegedly not coming to PC.

Which is interesting because Sucker Punch’s title was originally planned alongside other “internally developed” titles. Those alleged plans were scrapped, even as those “familiar with the company’s plans” told Schreier that Sony’s strategy could always change. And while there’s no concrete information on why the company is pulling back from PC, Schreier noted that a “faction within PlayStation” was hesitant to bring its first-party titles to PC.

They were reportedly concerned that it would not only affect sales for the PS5 but also successive consoles and damage the overall brand. Of course, you also have to consider the lackluster sales of recent titles and the inconsistent release cycle of ports. Interestingly, Schreier speculated another possible reason: the rumored next Xbox’s increased PC focus, which may have caused leadership to avoid future single-player titles releasing on the same.

Marathon, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Horizon Hunters Gathering and other multiplayer titles will still launch on day one for PC and PS5. However, Sony has toned down its live-service output in recent years owing to numerous failures, so it remains to be seen how many others could make their way to PC.

While some ports could launch for the platform depending on their status, it seems the platform is no longer a priority for Sony.

A rather curious rumor made the rounds recently, suggesting that PlayStation will no longer port its single-player PS5 offerings to PC. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier promised there’s “more to come soon” on this, but reliable insider NateTheHate had more to offer.

Corroborating that PC players would see “fewer single-player games” from PlayStation, he added that, “You’ll be seeing fewer single player games arrive on PC.” Of course, this doesn’t mean you won’t see it in the foreseeable future, which mostly depends on “how far along the ports were.” But going forward, “it no longer appears to be a priority for Sony.”

The most recent PS5 exclusive to hit PC is Death Stranding 2: On the Beach from Kojima Productions, which isn’t a first-party developer. Since the studio owns the IP, it may have more flexibility regarding the platforms it can release for. However, Nixxes is involved in the porting work, and PlayStation is publishing.

Perhaps the shift is due to how its ports have underperformed, including Returnal and LEGO Horizon Adventures. Even a highly anticipated release like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 fell short of Spider-Man Remastered. Of course, none of this seems to affect the publisher’s live-service plans, as evidenced by Horizon Hunters Gathering coming to PS5 and PC on day one.

As always, time will tell, so stay tuned for more details, but for now, you probably shouldn’t expect Housemarque’s Saros or Marvel’s Wolverine to release for PC anytime soon.

The company seems to be changing its strategy to revolve around needing a PlayStation console alongside other gaming machines.

While the last few years have seen Sony embracing PC as a platform for the release of its single-player games, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier believes that the company might be looking to revert this decision. He spoke about this possibility on a recent episode of the Triple Click podcast. However, he went on to note that the company seemingly still plans to release live-service games on PC to capture as wide of an audience as possible.

“I think for them, their strategy is like, live service games are coming to PC,” he said. “But I think the sense I’m getting is that they’re backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional single-player stuff on PC.” Bringing up the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, Schreier noted that Sony seems to have no plans to bring it to PC. “I mean even if they don’t, we are seeing Wolverine is coming on September 15th, and that’s not coming to PC. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 only,” he said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it never came to PC, but even if it does you have a strong idea of what that is and that you need a PlayStation to play it at least for the indefinite future.”

Responding to questions about it simply being speculation on the ResetEra forums, Schreier offered some clarification. He said that while he hasn’t quite been ready to publish a whole story about Sony’s pull back from multiplatform releases for its single-player games just yet, more details will be coming soon.

“I mean, it’s not speculation, but sometimes topics come up on the show before I’m quite ready to publish a story about them. More to come soon I’m sure.”

Interestingly, John Linneman of Digital Foundry had expressed a similar belief. In a recent Q&A video, the hosts of Digital Foundry discussed Sony’s PC ports, and how the company has missed quite a few opportunities since the PS5’s launch, including Demon’s Souls and Gran Turismo 7. “I have an inkling that [Sony is] pulling away from PC,” said Linneman.

It is worth noting that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is the only recent single-player PS5 game that has been confirmed to be getting a PC release. However, Kojima Productions isn’t exactly a first-party developer under the PlayStation Studios banner. Whether or not Ghost of Yōtei gets a PC release will likely be a bigger indicator for Sony’s plans for the platform moving forward.

On the multiplayer side of things, the company has seen quite a bit of success with Helldivers 2. Looking forward, it is likely looking to do the same with the co-op focused Horizon Hunters Gathering, which was unveiled earlier this month. The title is slated to hit PC and PS5 on the same day, complete with cross-platform multiplayer and cross-progression.

While Horizon Hunters Gathering doesn’t yet have a release date, Guerrilla Games has noted that it will return to making single-player Horizon games in the future. Rumors have indicated that a Horizon 3 is still a long time away, however.

The beloved Spirit Guide returns with more experience and several new challenges to tackle in EmberLab's upcoming sequel.

Weeks after its announcement at State of Play, Ember Lab’s Kena: Scars of Kosmora can now be wishlisted for PS5 and PC. You can do so on the PlayStation Store, Steam and Epic Games Store, though prices have yet to be confirmed.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits, the first game, is notable for launching at $39.99, several years before the $50 price point looked more attractive. That may not be the case for Scars of Kosmora, especially with Ember Lab partnering with PlayStation Studios to expand on the scope. The sheer scale of the new region certainly indicates more premium pricing.

It’s unlikely to cross into the $70 threshold like most first-party PlayStation titles, but you never know. Kena: Scars of Kosmora launches later this year and focuses on a grown-up Kena, who’s now come into her own as a Spirit Guide. She’ll need all the help she can get, especially as new enemies await. Alongside gorgeous new locations to explore, players can look forward to more fluid combat compared to the original.

Kena also has a new mount, which can aid in exploration. You can even summon it during combat for an extra boost in speed. Stay tuned for more details ahead of its release in the coming months.

Known for its remakes of Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, Bluepoint is seemingly another victim of Sony's live-service push.

Layoffs in the games industry, especially in the past several years, remain a sordid matter, but there’s something about certain studios closing that just hurts. I’m talking about the closure of Monolith Productions of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and War fame. I’m talking about the closure of Tango Gameworks (before it was purchased and revived by Krafton alongside the Hi-Fi Rush IP, of course). And today, I’m talking especially about Bluepoint Games.

Yes, the same Bluepoint Games that developed Demon’s Souls Remake, a top-tier PS5 exclusive and one of the very best launch titles across generations. In a recent statement to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, the studio will shut down in March after a “recent business review” by Sony. About 70 employees will lose their jobs, but hey, the company thanks them for their “passion, creativity, and craftsmanship.”

A stream of expletives wouldn’t be enough to express my annoyance at all this, but amidst it all, I – and several thousands of other fans – can only ask one thing: Why?

Well, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst has the answer – allegedly, of course, in a message shared with staff and reported by Kotaku. While praising the studio’s various successes, he said, “At the same time, we’re operating in an increasingly challenging industry environment. Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.

“To navigate this reality, we need to continue adapting and evolving. We’ve taken a close look at our business to ensure we’re delivering today while still well-positioned for the future. As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March. This decision was not made lightly. Bluepoint is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. I want to thank everyone at Bluepoint for their creativity, craftsmanship, and commitment to quality. Where possible, we will work to find opportunities for some impacted employees within our global network of studios.”

Remember last year when Sony cancelled several live service projects and even shut down SIE London Studio? Bend Studio’s next title was in the bin, but so was Bluepoint’s – which was the first time we had even heard about their new project (that too based on an unlikely candidate for the model). “Is that what Sony had the developer on after acquiring it in 2021?” we all probably said at the same time, likely with the same level of shock.

I mean, this is the studio that not only worked on Demon’s Souls Remake but also Shadow of the Colossus Remake, which received its fair share of accolades. It brought Gravity Rush to an entirely new market with the 2015 remaster on PS4. It delivered not one, or two, or three, but four excellent collections for series like Uncharted and, of course, Metal Gear Solid. I still remember the sheer wizardry it employed to port Titanfall to the Xbox 360 back in 2014, and let’s not forget that it also worked on Ragnarok (alongside several other studios, but still).

A studio with such an impressive pedigree and by Sony’s own admission, “technical expertise” that resulted in “exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community,” and the first instinct was to put them on a live-service game? This reeks of Anthem all over again.

You could blame former SIE CEO Jim Ryan, who began the whole live-service initiative, which is still crashing and burning. But the current Sony is the one still trying to pursue live-service success. It desperately wants to recreate the success of Helldivers 2, and if it means throwing projects – and studios – at the wall until something sticks, consequences and layoffs be damned, then so be it.

In the case of Bluepoint Games, it probably didn’t see any possible place for it, repeated praise notwithstanding. After all, it already had one cancelled live-service project – which was greenlit by a higher-up who’s no longer in charge. Schreier reports that it tried pitching something else for the past year, and based on the results, it seems nothing appealed to Sony. Assuming it didn’t want to work on any more remakes – and that’s a tall assumption to make since Sony owns it and can mandate its next project – it’s ludicrous to think that there weren’t other areas or projects it could be assigned to.

Is it because Demon’s Souls didn’t sell millions of units in a certain period of time? Is that why Sony didn’t task it with making a Bloodborne remake? Is it only franchises like The Last of Us which deserve a remake, since they have a TV show to promote? We may never know.

Regardless, all of this simply smacks of a corporation that’s looking at any low-impact cuts it could make to improve its bottom line, even marginally so. Someone probably saw the number of developers at Bluepoint and decided it wasn’t worth keeping on the books at all, especially considering all the other above factors. None of us is privy to those high-level decisions, but this has to be one of the most out-of-touch that I’ve seen in quite a while.

It also makes you wonder about the company’s obsession with the live-service model. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. But if you’re Sony, shut down a bunch of studios, cancel several projects, lay off numerous employees, and then try again? It has to work eventually, right? That certainly seems to be the logic here.

How else could you explain projects like Horizon Hunters Gathering, which is reportedly the main focus of Guerrilla Games (with the next single-player Horizon reportedly not coming for several more years)? Or 4:Loop, developed by Bad Robot Games and failing to really ignite much interest all the times it’s been shown? You could argue that Marathon makes some sense given how much more space is in the extraction shooter market, but it’s still a coin toss, given Bungie’s reputation and the many ways it’s already bungled first impressions. And I dare Sony to tell me with a straight face that Bluepoint is worth shutting down, but Fairgame$, of all things, needs to remain in development (if it even still is, because no one wants to share anything).

Either way, for a company that so desperately needs more single-player titles, the decision is even more baffling. Remember when Sony committed to releasing “major single-player game titles every year” after Ghost of Yōtei? That was in a year which had only one notable single-player offering to speak of. Last year saw two in Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and the latter isn’t technically Sony as much as Kojima Productions. This year is similar with Saros and Marvel’s Wolverine to look forward to in terms of full-fledged single-player offerings (Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is more multiplayer-geared). From my perspective, you don’t need fewer award-winning studios for crafting more such experiences.

Wasn’t the end goal to “monetize” the current PS5 install base by growing the revenue from software and network services? Does Sony truly have so little faith in Bluepoint Games’ ability to deliver a notable single-player experience that it just shut it down rather than avoid the trouble? Does that mean Bend Studio is next, especially given how we’ve heard nothing about its next project in the past year as well? Does Sony simply rinse and repeat with this process until there are only the big-name studios left, after which it probably goes on another shopping spree for more?

It’s just so bizarre to me that you can have almost nothing worthwhile for such a talented studio for so many years while pushing all these other titles that no one asked for. Call it bias because I enjoyed several of their titles and have a soft spot for its specific feats, whether it’s delivering the best darned Metal Gear Solid HD Collection ever, exposing more people to the brilliance of Titanfall, or simply bringing Boletaria to a new generation in stunning detail. Either way, this is a massive loss for no good reason – dismissed just about as easily with the business equivalent of “Bye, Felicia.”

Hermen Hulst noted that rising development costs, slowed growth, and changing player behaviour contributed to economic challenges.

In light of Sony confirming that it is shutting down Bluepoint Games in March, CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group Hermen Hulst seemingly sent a message to staff members discussing the decision. According to Kotaku, Hulst said that the closure of the studio came down to the fact that the company is facing an “increasingly challenging industry environment.”

While the message starts off by praising the work of PlayStation Studios for critically and commercially successful games like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Ghost of Yōtei, Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show, it then discusses rising development costs, slowed industry growth, and player behaviour changing along with “broader economic headwinds.”

“I wanted to share an update from the Studio Business,” wrote Hulst. “As I mentioned in the December Town Hall, 2025 had some strong highlights within PlayStation Studios. Ghost of Yotei launched to critical and commercial success, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach further showcased our commitment to narrative excellence, and Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show continue to drive on-going player engagement and revenue.”

“At the same time, we’re operating in an increasingly challenging industry environment. Rising development costs, slowed industry growth, changing player behavior, and broader economic headwinds are making it harder to build games sustainably.”

These economic issues ultimately led to Sony deciding to pull the plug on Bluepoint Games. A PlayStation spokesperson had previously confirmed that 70 employees of the studio were being laid off as a result of it being shut down.

“To navigate this reality, we need to continue adapting and evolving. We’ve taken a close look at our business to ensure we’re delivering today while still well-positioned for the future. As a result, we will be closing Bluepoint Games in March,” Hulst continued.

“This decision was not made lightly. Bluepoint is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. I want to thank everyone at Bluepoint for their creativity, craftmanship, and commitment to quality. Where possible, we will work to find opportunities for some impacted employees within our global network of studios.”

“While I know this is hard news to hear, I’m confident in the direction we’re headed. Creativity, innovation, and building unforgettable experiences for players remain at the heart of PlayStation Studios. We have a robust roadmap for FY26, with much to look forward to in the months ahead. Thank you for your hard work and continued support.”

Bluepoint Games is well-regarded for its work on various remakes over the years, including one of the launch titles for PS5—a remake of Demon’s Souls. Previously, the studio had also worked on a remake of the critically-acclaimed Shadow of the Colossus. In more recent times, the studio was working on a live-service game that would take place in the God of War universe. However, along with many of Sony’s other live-service projects, it was also ultimately cancelled.

PlayStation had noted that the project’s cancellation wouldn’t lead to the studio being shut down at the time. Since then, Bluepoint Games has spent the year pitching new projects that seemingly didn’t get approved.

Following a "recent business review," Sony has decided to shut down the studio, nearly a year after cancelling its last project.

After Sony cancelled its live-service God of War title last year, Bluepoint Games will shut down in March after a “recent business review.” A spokesperson for PlayStation told Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier this will result in about 70 employees being laid off.

“Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team, and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity and craftsmanship,” they said.

Bluepoint Games is perhaps best known for Demon’s Souls Remake, but it also worked on collections such as God of War Collection, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. It arguably broke out in 2018 with its remake of Shadow of the Colossus, which received extensive acclaim.

Sony would acquire the studio in 2021, and it would work on projects such as God of War Ragnarok. Its unannounced live-service God of War title was in development for an unknown amount of time before facing cancellation in January 2025. PlayStation said this cancellation wouldn’t lead to the studio’s closure at the time, and Bluepoint seemingly spent the past year pitching something new.

Bluepoint Games joins other notable first-party studios to face closures following Sony’s failed live-service initiative, including SIE London Studio (previously working on a fantasy title) and Firewalk Studios (which delivered the disastrous Concord). Of course, despite these cancellations and laid-off developers, the publisher continues to pursue live-service titles, with Bad Robot Games’ 4:Loop and Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Hunters Gathering.

Kena is back for another adventure, and she's more experienced and seasoned, venturing to a brand-new region with new threats.

Kena is back in Kena: Scars of Kosmora, a sequel to Bridge of Spirits that sees her take on a more mature role as a Spirit Guide, bringing her unique blend of empathy and compassion to the living. Ember Lab’s co-founders, Josh and Mike Grier, have stated that the team is looking to create something “bigger and better this time around”, while highlighting its newfound association with PlayStation Studios.

“Our partnership with PlayStation Studios has empowered us to expand our scope, while still staying true to what made the first game special,” they said in the announcement trailer. The reputation Kena cultivated in the previous game seemingly has her in good standing with the residents of Kosmora, a new region she explores in her capacity as a Spirit Guide. There are new threats for her to face, and new mysteries for her to investigate as she aims to help in both the physical and spiritual realms.

The sequel builds on the first game with a combat system that sees Kena wield her staff and bow to great effect, with fast, fluid animations that bring style and substance to each battle. Kosmora shines through with visual splendor alongside excellent enemy and boss designs that have us quite eager to get our hands on the game.

While details on the story are scarce at this time, we’re expecting a narrative with a lot of charm and heart, just like in Bridge of Spirits. Kena: Scars of Kosmora releases later this year for the PS5 and PC. You can check out the first trailer below.
