A leaker has noted that, while Capcom won't ignore fan demand for remakes of Resident Evil 5 or 6, there are no plans for now.

Industry insider AestheticGamer (aka Dusk Golem) had recently reported that there is no interest at Capcom in doing remakes of Resident Evil 5 or 6 for now. In a post on ResetEra, the leaker has offered further clarification, noting that the company currently doesn’t have any idea what it wants to do with the two titles, and that previous reports about an entire line of remade Resident Evil games being in the works that would lead up to Resident Evil Requiem are false.

Dusk Golem went on to note that there is no “master plan” that Capcom has been following with regards to the Resident Evil franchise and its remake, and that the company isn’t really thinking that far in advance. Rather, the current operating procedure at the company revolves around 5-year plans, with reassessments happening every few years.

“The original tweet I was quote-tweeting is claiming Capcom has some plan to do a remake line leading up to Requiem and restructure the narrative as part of some long-term plan,” said Dusk Golem. “This is false, Capcom has no f***ing idea right now what they want to do with RE5 and RE6 in remaking them, if they ever even decide to do them (right now they’re not committed to that at all), and they definitely aren’t making these remakes as some idea to restructure the whole series to Requiem.”

“There’s not a plan right now to lead up to Requiem with the Remakes, and really, they’ll only decide what they want to do with an RE5/RE6 Remake if they ever decide to actually do them. There’s not some ‘master plan’ to any of this; they aren’t thinking that far ahead about it. They tend to keep to only thinking 5 years ahead at any time broadly and will reassess every few years where they should go with the franchise rather than planning some super long-term plan.”

The leaker went on to note that there is the possibility of a remake of Resident Evil 5 happening at some point in the future, and that it will likely come down to whether fans want it to happen, especially after Capcom wraps up its current plans that involve Resident Evil Veronica, and reportedly will include remakes of Resident Evil 0 and the original Resident Evil. “Capcom can’t ignore that,” they wrote.

“But the claim the quoted tweet was making is completely false in literally all its details. There is no plan to remake RE5/RE6 right now, there isn’t some initiative to remake all the Resident Evil games specifically, and they aren’t thinking of tying this Remake line to Requiem specifically. Veronica and Zero Remake will tie into Requiem, but honestly that has a lot more to do with the fact they were in dev at the same time as Requiem than any master plan idea, and Requiem specifically sets up Veronica & RE:0 to tie more into itself.”

It is worth noting that the original Resident Evil 5, while still considered a fun co-op action horror game by many, is also quite problematic for the franchise, since it led Resident Evil down a path that would eventually see the release of the much-maligned Resident Evil 6.

In the meantime, Resident Evil Veronica – a remake of Resident Evil – Code: Veronica – is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.

One of Capcom's most ambitious remakes in the series yet looks to dive deeper into every aspect, from its characters to gameplay.

Over one million wishlists. Not even a week after its reveal at Summer Game Fest, Resident Evil Veronica has accumulated more than one million wishlists. It was apparently the third best-performing title in terms of engagement, press coverage and views on each trailer – not bad considering State of Play and Nintendo Direct served as competition. The message is clear, though: fans are excited about the remake, and the prospect of finally playing as Claire once more.

And while the developer wants the next info drop to be a surprise, it sat down with various media outlets during Summer Game Fest to answer questions and clarify several aspects. Let’s dive into the ten biggest new details, starting with…

The Dream Team

As rumored and confirmed, Yasuhiro Anpo and Kazunori Kadoi of Resident Evil 2 Remake fame are heading up the project. However, the former is the director while the latter serves as associate director this time around. They’re not the only ones returning – those who worked on the remakes in the series are also along for the ride, and we’ll learn more about them leading up to release.

Third-Person Perspective

The other biggest – and most obvious confirmation – is that Resident Evil Veronica is a third-person game. Despite the trailer being in first-person before showing Claire’s face, it was intended more for dramatic effect than to reflect how the game actually plays (which we noted immediately after the reveal). However, that doesn’t mean you can expect the exact same camera angles as the original. Game producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told Polygon that, “It’s going to be very much in line with the game feel of Resident Evil 2 remake.” In other words, if you enjoy the over-the-shoulder aiming of that game, and those that came after, you’ll be right at home in Veronica. Speaking of which…

Resource Management

Resident Evil titles have no shortage of item juggling in your inventory and planning for how you’ll approach certain encounters or use resources. But Code: Veronica was perhaps the most demanding in that vein, pushing you to think very far ahead about what you would use. So if you enjoyed the approach, great news – it’s coming back. Hirabayashi says the team believes it to be a “core concept” – this idea of thinking “for yourself to explore and manage resources to face the horror in your own way. There is a lot of room for you to strategize on how you want to handle things to survive.” However, he also noted that it’s being treated “very carefully” in the remake, which could mean sanding off some of the more frustrating parts.

Changing the Opening

If you’re one of the 1,795,639 (and counting) views on the announcement trailer, and played the original, then you likely immediately noticed something off about the intro. Why isn’t Claire imitating the Matrix as she shoots through Umbrella’s Paris HQ? Is the original’s iconic intro gone?

Speaking to Denfamico Gamer, Hirabayashi said the team wanted to stick to exploring characters with “greater dramatic depth.” “I do remember the dramatic opening of the original game, but when I considered where a sister searching for her brother would go first, I thought that, in a realistic context, she would head to her brother’s home rather than to the evil pharmaceutical company.” He did repeat that the trailer is just for dramatic effect, perhaps hinting that the sequence could play out differently in-game. However, it seems there won’t be any…

Cut Content

As reported by AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem – an ever-reliable source of Resident Evil and Silent Hill leaks and news – Hirabayashi seemingly told journalists that the remake won’t cut any scenes. Instead, a lot will be “shifted, moved around, reimagined, and transformed,” even more than we’ve seen in other remakes. In fact, this may very well be the most “aggressive” in terms of revamping the story and characters.

Why Return to Claire?

If you’re wondering why the team chose to return to Claire Redfield after so long, it’s because of how Leon’s story has played out over the years. While the team isn’t saying his arc is effectively complete, they did ask, “What is the next character we want everyone to experience their character arc or next step in the story?” Claire was the answer, and Veronica is “the ultimate way to experience” her journey, Hirabayashi told WCCF Tech. Besides, the team also really wanted to tell her story after what happened in Raccoon City.

Claire’s Character

Of course, since the story is set three months after the Raccoon City Destruction Incident from Resident Evil 2, you shouldn’t expect Claire to have the same level of combat prowess as Leon. Instead, as the producer notes, “She relies on her own tough mentality and the survival techniques her brother taught her,” resulting in an experience that’s “essentially a mashed-up, enhanced version of what we did with RE2.”

But that doesn’t mean she won’t get any character development. As Hirabayashi told VGC, there’s a “lot more about her that we haven’t shared” which players will learn – a “lot more untold.” Perhaps we’ll see more sibling bonding moments between Claire and Chris, and learn about how they grew up.

Alfred Ashford’s Portrayal

Speaking of sibling bonding, there’s Alfred Ashford. The original depiction of the character wasn’t the most…tasteful thing about Code: Veronica. While things are still subject to change since Veronica is still in development, the team wants to focus on the “darkness inside people’s hearts and minds”, which suits the remake since it’s more focused on emotion and when “love is pushed too far.” It’s seemingly looking to explore the “darkness in Alfred’s heart” as a result, but again, nothing has been confirmed. Either way, given how this particular team has handled character updates for the other remakes, we’d say they know what they’re doing.

A Numbered Entry

If you’ll remember back in the day, Code: Veronica, despite its extensive acclaim, played second fiddle to the likes of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and was mostly relegated to history. Former Nintendo of America public relations managers Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, who also attended the SGF presentation, noted Hirabayashi saying the lack of a number came down to “a lot of internal politics” back in the day. But that’s not the case anymore, as the producer told VGC, “Code: Veronica is just as vital and important as a numbered Resident Evil entry. So, the discussion that arose in the development team was, ‘ What’s something we can do to communicate that to our audience?’”

This is why “Code” was removed from the title. It essentially brings the remake – and the game as a whole – closer to the modern titles like Resident Evil Village and Requiem. A “one-word subtitle that encapsulates a very important part of the game,” per Hirabayashi. “So, aligning with that title convention that we’re taking in our recent mainline numbered entries, we followed a similar alignment.”

Requiem Learnings and Connections

But perhaps even more intriguing is that the team has looked at Resident Evil Requiem, not just in terms of feedback, but also “where the universe is in that game, and finding ways to reflect that and connect that to the remake and the story there as well,” Hirabayashi told VGC. A possible connection to The Connections, perhaps?

As for game quality, he admitted that the developer does this for every title, especially in areas like usability. “We’ve gained a lot of knowledge as we’ve created games, including Requiem, and so we’re taking all that knowledge that we’ve accumulated and using it for Veronica as well.” Again, the gameplay is where we’ll see that for ourselves.

However, in terms of understanding and the respect that this team has for the original, this quote via VGC really says it all: “We, the development team, think the original Code: Veronica is a title that’s just as important and significant as any other numbered title in the series.” And that’s more than enough for us.

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi also feels that you'll enjoy the story more if you're "familiar with other games in the Resident Evil series."

We’ve seen neither hide nor hair of gameplay for Resident Evil Veronica, but suffice it to say that fans are already sold after its Summer Game Fest reveal. Over one million wishlists in less than a week, it’s gone from a cult classic to Capcom’s big 2027 release (barring any other future announcements).

Of course, the franchise has seen many changes ever since the original Code: Veronica launched in 2000. The recent remakes have retconned a decent amount, and that’s not even getting into the events of Resident Evil Requiem. But don’t worry – producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi told Famitsu (translation via IGN) that it’s accounting for all this in the remake.

“With Resident Evil Veronica, we are planning to restructure the story so that players can clearly feel how all of these titles are part of one cohesive series.” That includes changes made in Resident Evil 2 Remake, but he added that, “What’s most important for the development team at Capcom is putting the players’ memories first, and then rebuilding the game on top of that.”

If you haven’t played Code: Veronica, then it’s not exactly required for the remake. That said, Hirabayashi believes “you will enjoy it even more if you are familiar with the stories of other games in the Resident Evil series. So I highly recommend playing any past titles that you haven’t played yet.” So there’s your homework for the coming months.

Resident Evil Veronica is out in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. While it doesn’t have a release date yet, rumors claim it could arrive in the first half of the year. It’s directed by Yasuhiro Anpo with Kazunori Kadoi as the associate director – both familiar for their work on the Resident Evil 2 and 4 Remakes. And while it’s in third-person just like the original, you can expect the game to feel more like the former.

Perhaps Capcom's most ambitious remake yet, there's certainly room for change based on everything we know about the original.

If there’s one game in the Resident Evil franchise that fans have been begging for a remake of, it’s Code: Veronica. Well, their wishes have come true, as Resident Evil Veronica, sans Code, was announced at Summer Game Fest for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Based on the bits we’ve seen thus far, we’re very excited, especially with how differently the story could play out, but make no mistake – there are plenty of things from the original that could use improvements or outright changes. Here are ten things that must happen in the remake, starting with…

A Bigger (and More Connected) Rockfort Island

The claustrophobia of Rockfort Island, even in more spacious areas, really added to the atmosphere of the original. And while Veronica doesn’t need to increase the size (though it’s confirmed that you’ll discover more backstories for the island’s residents before the outbreak), we wouldn’t mind if it added more, whether it’s terrifying sights to discover, areas with additional resources, or ways to return to previously explored locations. There’s a fine balance to all this, but given how well the development team handled it in Resident Evil 2 Remake, they’ve likely already thought ten steps ahead.

Amplify the Survival Horror

Contrary to the opening cutscene of Claire smashing through Umbrella’s Paris facility, this isn’t a run-and-gun action game. It’s not one where amazing acrobatics and limitless ammo will save the day, because Code: Veronica is a survival horror through and through. So instead, the team should focus on enhancing everything that made the original so memorable, whether it’s the tension and atmosphere, or the attention to detail in the environments (which blew our minds back in the day). With the stated goal being to focus more on horror first and foremost while delving deeper into the characters, we’d say they’re on the right track.

Adjust the Inventory and Character-Switching Challenges

Maybe it’s the lack of a number and the company wanting to separate Code: Veronica from the mainline series, but it’s much more challenging than the other Resident Evil games at the time. I still remember all the times when failing to avoid an enemy at an opportune moment, or unloading too much ammo on a specific boss, would leave me with less than enough for later on, raising the difficulty exponentially. And then there’s that one puzzle that requires storing an empty fire extinguisher as Claire in an item box – NOT the security box – so that Chris can take it, refill it, and use it to access a powerful weapon. While the development team has confirmed that inventory management will be important, here’s hoping for less frustration.

Revamp the Puzzles

On that note – puzzle design. Yes, it’s important to respect the original’s ideas, but you can also acknowledge that some of them were just a little too opaque. Instead of relying on thoroughly studying documents for some hints, implementing them better into the actual environments would go a long way. Again, it doesn’t need to become a cakewalk, but sanding off some of the friction – or even adding easier puzzles that could teach certain concepts before ramping up – would go a long way.

Make Steve Less Annoying

Listen, Steve – it’s not us. It’s never been us. It’s you, and no amount of time can ever make that whiny nasally voice or creepy attitude any more palatable. So aside from changing his entire personality and how he approaches Claire, make Steve actually come across as naive but still reliable. He can survive on the zombie-ridden Rockfort Island after all, and shows plenty of skill with dual-wielding weapons. Just make him less annoying. It’s the easiest of fixes.

Funnily enough, the development team hasn’t even confirmed that he’s in the game, saying that if he’s “hypothetically” present, then “Like we do in every remake title, we’re always looking for ways to dig deeper into characters to give them more dimension. That goes for Claire, and might include Steve. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Address The Ashford Twins

Maybe it’s because of Alfred’s general demeanor or Alexia not really saying anything during the final battle, but the Ashford twins could use a bit of fine-tuning. Remember that scene from when they were children, plucking a dragonfly’s wings and leaving ants to consume it as they gazed at each other? Take the essence of that, and distill it through the game. Both of their more dramatic mannerisms can be made more genuinely disturbing, and Alexia could desperately use some more dialogue (and opportunities to showcase her power). For now, though, exploring the “darkness” in Alfred’s heart is a good start.

Claire Going From Strength to Strength

Claire has always been more emotional, and not in a weak way. Reaching out to Sherry, always showing concern for her (especially since Resident Evil 2 Remake effectively undid any connection the former would have with Leon), and fighting to her last breath to keep her alive. That’s not changing in Veronica, especially since she’s now chasing after her brother, who’s been missing for months. But after Raccoon City, Claire is confirmed to be more “mentally resilient” even if she isn’t “physically stronger,” per the developer.

Develop the Rivalry of Chris and Wesker

If the rumors and actual marketing weren’t indication enough, this is Claire’s campaign. Which isn’t to say that Chris, Wesker and the HCF won’t have bigger roles, but even if their time on screen is only slightly longer, it needs to matter more. Why? Because Veronica is also the next chapter in their story – their latest encounter after the Arklay Laboratory outbreak. There needs to be more bad blood, but not so much that it overpowers Claire’s story, especially since it would serve as a strong escalation heading into Resident Evil 5 (if it still exists within this new canon).

Scarier Enemies and Bosses

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica sports some pretty nasty foes, from the Bandersnatch to Nosferatu, but they can be made even scarier with today’s technology. And judging by the trailer, the developer understands the assignment when it comes to making its baseline zombies actually terrifying, going from individual entities that would slowly pursue Claire and Chris to more aggressively seeking their flesh. Do I think it could throw some hordes at players? Probably not, but it would be a nice surprise.

Expand on the Ashfords and Umbrella Europe

Something that’s been kind of lacking with the franchise – and we would know, after that lengthy retrospective from before Requiem’s launch – is information on Umbrella Europe. We know that it created the Nemesis Project and the Gamma and Beta versions of the Hunter, and that Chris was investigating the same. But that’s more or less it, and there’s so much more that the development team could do with it, not to mention expanding on the history of the Ashford family. Fortunately, it seems the team is going even further by adding a new “throughline” that ties into Resident Evil Requiem. Again, we’ll need to wait and see what that means, but maybe it could shed more light on a certain mysterious character in a dapper suit.

Aside from all that, perhaps one of the most important things that Veronica needs to do: Not cut any content. It’s one thing to remove familiar plot elements from Resident Evil 2 Remake – the core is still intact, just reimagined and at times, rearranged. It’s another to take out some of the most memorable sequences, like the fight in the clock tower from Resident Evil 3 Remake.

And while the lack of Claire blasting through Umbrella’s facility has some concerned about cut content, the developer has confirmed that you should prepare for many things to have been shifted, reimagined, and so on – much more so than previous titles. With Resident Evil 2 Remake developers at the helm, Veronica could be more than just a revival of a cult classic when it launches in 2027.

Less than a week after its reveal, Capcom's remake has accrued an impressive number of wishlists leading up to its 2027 launch.

Remember when Resident Evil Requiem was announced at last year’s Summer Game Fest and surpassed one million wishlists in less than three weeks? Resident Evil Veronica has already beaten it out, crossing the same number of wishlists in less than a week since its reveal.

And once again, much like Requiem, this is without pre-orders being available or any gameplay footage. The reveal trailer was mainly in first-person and served more to highlight Claire Redfield’s return to the spotlight than anything else. Also, Hunk, if that is indeed who we think it is.

Thankfully, Capcom has spilt further details to media outlets that attended Summer Game Fest. First off, it’s still in third-person, but the game feel will be more akin to Resident Evil 2 Remake, so more over-the-shoulder than fixed angles. Claire is also described as being changed by the Raccoon City Destruction Incident, though you shouldn’t expect her to be a superhero or anything.

And while “Code” has been dropped from the name, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said you should consider the names of other Resident Evil titles like Village and Requiem. Essentially, Veronica is now considered more of a mainline entry than the original release, so the naming has changed to reflect that.

There’s still plenty of time to learn more about Resident Evil Veronica, which launches in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Between showcasing Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker and the potential return of Steve Burnside, fans are in for a busy couple of months.

Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has also confirmed that the directors behind the critically-acclaimed remake are taking up the same roles.

Just a few days after officially unveiling Resident Evil Veronica – a long-awaited remake of 2000’s Resident Evil – Code: Veronica – producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has revealed details about the team working on the game. In an interview with WCCFTech, Hirabayashi was asked about how far along in development Resident Evil Veronica was at this point, and while he didn’t want to spoil any planned surprises, he confirmed that the teams that worked on Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake are now working on this project.

“First off, we at CAPCOM love our surprises, so I am going to keep the next information drop a secret,” said Hirabayashi when asked about the development progress on Resident Evil Veronica. “As for development, the team is made up of members who worked on the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. They started working on the Veronica project right around the time development on the RE4 remake began to wind down.”

Hirabayashi also confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica is being directed by Yasuhiro Anpo, with Kazunori Kadoi handling associate director duties. He brought up the fact that both have worked together in the past on the critically-acclaimed remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, and as such, have plenty of experience in figuring out how classic games can be brought up to modern standards.

“Most of the direction is centralized around a team led by Director Yasuhiro Anpo and Associate Director Kazunori Kadoi, who previously headed the RE2 and RE4 remakes,” he said. “With that said, it is a massive team effort involving many individuals. There are other team members who share high-level responsibilities alongside the directors, and I hope we can introduce them to you at a later time.”

Resident Evil Veronica was unveiled over the weekend with a cinematic trailer from the perspective of protagonist Claire Redfield. In the trailer, Claire is in a French city as part of her attempts to find the whereabouts of her brother – Chris Redfield – who went missing after the events of the original Resident Evil. Shortly after entering an apartment that might have been where he was staying, Claire hears a knock on the door, and on opening it, she’s detained by an unknown person.

The trailer didn’t really reveal any gameplay details. While it may have indicated that the title might use the first-person perspective, Hirabayashi has confirmed that this is not the case, and revealed that the gameplay will use a third-person camera. He has also confirmed that the gameplay loop will be similar to the one in Resident Evil 2 Remake, which means plenty of resource management and a sense of dread throughout the survival horror experience.

The original Resident Evil – Code: Veronica featured two distinct playable protagonists in the form of Claire and Chris. The trailer for Resident Evil Veronica, however, didn’t provide any details about whether or not players will also get to play as Chris. If it does, we can expect a storytelling style similar to what we saw in this year’s Resident Evil Requiem.

Resident Evil Veronica is being developed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Capcom is sticking to what made the original work, though you can expect something "very much in line" with Resident Evil 2 Remake.

Resident Evil Veronica made quite the splash at the latest Summer Game Fest, giving us a look at the long-awaited remake that definitely had us wanting more. Typical, if expected, from Capcom. But an interview after the reveal with Polygon has shed some light on how the developers at Capcom have approached it, and that includes sticking to the third-person perspective.

This comes from none other than the game’s producer, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, who explained that the remake would feel “very much in line with the game feel of Resident Evil 2 remake.” So if you thought the reveal trailer’s first-person perspective was suggesting otherwise, think again.

Of course, we’re not writing off the possibility of a few first-person sequences in a similar vein to Resident Evil 3 remake, where Jill’s opening section had her looking around her apartment in the first-person view before Nemesis began hunting her. But you shouldn’t expect the ability to switch between first and third person throughout the game like Resident Evil Requiem.

Either way, we’re stoked about this one and can’t wait for a release date that we suspect might be one of those unannounced titles that Capcom had mentioned earlier this month for this fiscal year. It’s currently slated for 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

The “code” from Code Veronica is gone, but there are reasons why that’s a welcome change for both Claire and the remake.

Resident Evil Veronica has finally come out of the shadows, and that reveal at the Summer Game Fest has us quite excited about what’s coming in the remake. Among them is how Claire seems to have evolved from the events of Resident Evil 2. That’s intentional, according to Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, the game’s producer, who was happy to elaborate further in a sit-down with Polygon.

She hasn’t had too long to train since her escape from Raccoon City in her previous canon appearance, a facet that the original game seems to have neglected when you think back to how agile she was in the opening hour. However, that’s being addressed. “In a short span of three months, Claire isn’t able to become an agent of the government or anything like that. The experience has changed her in some ways, and she has some training from her brother Chris.”

Aside from a more measured take on Claire, complete with a solid visual overhaul of her character model, the remake’s also looking to give us a better version of the story, making it more in line with the franchise’s established canon rather than a standalone adventure. “We respect the original, but I’ll ask you to think about the titles of recent Resident Evil games, such as Village and Requiem.” Hence why the team dropped “Code” from the title.

We’ve had some thoughts about what Veronica is bringing to the table, and the fact that Capcom is finally giving it the reverence it deserves isn’t lost on us. Of course, Hirabayashi maintained Capcom’s penchant for being as mysterious as it can be when it comes to concrete details about its upcoming projects, but we’re hoping to see changes that make the narrative fit well within the larger framework of the franchise’s lore after Requiem. How it manages to do that is anybody’s guess at this point, but if there’s any studio that can get it right, it’s Capcom.

We don’t have a concrete release date for this one yet, but it could very well come out before the end of this financial year, which could mean a launch by March 31st, 2027 at the latest.

Claire Redfield returns after an extended absence but the remake has changed the 2000 survival horror in many ways.

The cycle begins anew for Resident Evil fans as a new title has been announced at Summer Game Fest once again. But even with the new, there’s a much-awaited return to the classic, namely the underrated Resident Evil – Code: Veronica.

Launching in 2027 – most likely by March 31st to fit the company’s fiscal year – Resident Evil Veronica kicked off its reveal in unexpected fashion. No break-in through Umbrella’s Paris facility, or slow-mo, Matrix-like action sequences that are impossible in the actual gameplay. Instead, it begins innocuously enough as Claire Redfield arrives at the building where her brother, Chris, has been staying.

Led upstairs by a kind old landlady, she discovers his flat in disarray with papers, a DSLR camera (with telephoto lens), a walkie-talkie, a personal recorder and an ashtray on the table. He also seems to have a sweet tooth if the box of Delices Du Marquis on the side table is any indication. What makes this entire scene interesting is the landlady revealing she had cleaned the place a week prior. Which means Chris popped in for however long and left again, seemingly in a hurry. “It’s like a boulder rolled through here,” she says, in the least obvious kind of foreshadowing yet.

After departing to make some coffee, Claire is left alone and hears a knock at the door. Opening it leads to her being held at knife point by, as the official website puts it, the “Umbrella special forces unit responsible for the incident.” Since it refers to the destruction of Raccoon City before this section, you can assume they’re the same incident. From here, she’s taken in and transported to Rockfort Island, and the rest should be as you know it. Another outbreak, turning the island’s residents into zombies. The Ashford family’s influence and the fate of Alexander, the 6th Earl, among other things.

Except it may not be so cut-and-dry. Besides the fact that the website touts this as a “reimagined storyline,” there’s the obvious gas-mask-wearing elephant in the room – Hunk, if that indeed is Hunk. He wasn’t in the original Code: Veronica. However, for those who played The Darkside Chronicles, which featured a condensed reimagining, Game of Oblivion, there was a report detailing that he did visit Rockfort Island.

Carrying a “large-scale B.O.W. capsule,” he noted that it was “stored at sub-zero temperatures” per Alfred’s request. However, he questions why his team, a “highly trained unit,” is assigned to what appears to be a “standard capsule,” and relayed his concerns regarding his team’s safety, especially if the contents are “potentially harmful.” No guesses for what – or who – is contained within.

While the development team may include this particular instance in the remake, perhaps it serves as inspiration for Hunk to have a bigger role. Given his re-emergence in Resident Evil Requiem for a short but fun fight, you have to wonder if maybe there are bigger plans to expand on his overarching lore. Then again, it could just be a case of throwing him in for a surprise rather than doing much more with him, especially if rumors about Albert Wesker and the HCF having larger roles and more story scenes turn out to be true.

Of course, this does raise other questions. How did Umbrella know that Claire would be there? Were they actually staking the location, waiting for Chris and just got lucky? Did grandma sell him out? The original made it clear that he was already under surveillance. And what’s the walkie-talkie for? Who’s he been communicating with?

At the very least, this scene makes sense because it explains why she went to Paris. How Claire even knew that Chris was staying at this particular location remains to be seen, but there’s also the part about sending an email to Leon to find her brother and ask for his assistance. Maybe in the remake, she left some clue at his apartment before being kidnapped? Umbrella may have even leaked the information to flush him out of hiding. Either way, this could have massive implications for how Chris’s part of the story unfolds.

Also, despite the original’s marketing featuring both Redfield siblings, this time, it’s just Claire. This could be in line with her allegedly being treated as the protagonist, but it may also be a case of the developer holding off on revealing what Chris looks like. It’s somewhat similar to how Leon wasn’t confirmed until months out from release and afterwards, figured prominently on the box art and marketing images.

Another interesting bit from the trailer – a figure in a red coat, white gloves and what seems to be a pocket watch making their way down the stairs. If that isn’t a redesign for Alfred Ashford, I don’t know what is. Honestly, it works, retaining the original look’s main color and formality while making it feel more modern and practical.

Other familiar locations appear but are overhauled with incredible detail alongside someone who covers his head with a hood. The light auburn hair gives away that this is Steve Burnside, a fellow prisoner who Claire meets and occasionally provides assistance. Another outfit change for a familiar character to go with a potentially less egregious personality? Most likely, but hey, at least the Gold Lugers – which play a part in the plot – look better than ever.

Perhaps the biggest red herring in this trailer is the first-person perspective when Claire enters the apartment building and looks around. You might think after Requiem that this may be the development team opting for another dual-perspective game, where you can swap between first and third person at any time. While that’s certainly possible, the fact that rumors about the remake’s development began two years ago, and the amount of effort that would go into implementing two perspectives – which the Requiem team described as essentially developing two games simultaneously – means it’s unlikely. Besides, all Resident Evil remakes have typically stuck to the over-the-shoulder perspective, and Veronica may simply follow suit, with the occasional first-person cutscene.

Of course, there’s the other big change – not the visuals or the opening, but the name. Why Veronica? Why not Code: Veronica, like the original? Besides the narrative significance of the name, it may be another clue that the remake is influenced by Darkside Chronicles, where Game of Oblivion refers to it as “the Veronica virus.” Whether it leans into other changes, like Claire helping Chris in an important battle, or even Chris meeting Steve, remains to be seen.

Either way, it’s unlikely that the development team will cut content – again, going by reports from leaker Dusk Golem. Which is all the more odd because the Umbrella Paris facility raid appears to be gone (unless Claire actually escaped and then went to find Chris). Perhaps they meant that no gameplay sequences from the original have been removed, opening the floor for something new. There’s also always the possibility that any story changes from previous remakes could tie in, even if some, like the fourth game, take place chronologically after.

Resident Evil Veronica is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, and based on everything seen thus far, it could be another stunning remake, especially since it doesn’t have to consider any previous-gen consoles. Whether it cements a brand new legacy for the 2000 survival horror is anyone’s guess, but for now, we’re happy to see Claire in the spotlight once again.

Claire Redfield is back and looking better than ever in the long-awaited remake of Capcom's 2000 survival horror classic.

Capcom has announced its next remake in the Resident Evil series and it’s Code: Veronica. Titled Resident Evil Veronica, it’s out in 2027 with a new trailer showcasing Claire Redfield entering an apartment in Paris that belongs to her brother, who’s absent.

She’s subsequently detained by a strange individual, who may very well be Hunk, before we see some quick snatches of the different environments. And don’t worry – the classic zombies of yore return in all their flesh-hungry glory.

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica has always held a special place in fans’ hearts. It was the fourth Resident Evil title before the official “4” and followed Claire Redfield after she escaped from Raccoon City to find Chris. It would lead to her capture by Umbrella and escape from Rockfort Island, dealing with all kinds of horrors.

Along the way, she learned more about the Ashcroft family, their role in the company’s founding and more. But more importantly, it was the first game in the series to feature fully rendered 3D environments. There’s also Steve Burnside, and really, the less said about him, the better.

With Albert Wesker and the HCF allegedly featuring more prominently, and apparently no cut content, Resident Evil Veronica could reach the same heights as its predecessors. It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
