After a two-year-long demo run, the realistic shooter promises a risky but worthwhile journey with hardcore survival vibes.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you probably know that Road to Vostok has been on our radar ever since its announcement in 2022.

The thought of a game that could push even the most skilled individuals to play it safe was definitely interesting, and this one’s permadeath approach had us wondering what it would be like. Well, we’re quite close to getting an answer as it’s finally made its early access debut, accompanied by a rather lengthy launch video where the developer goes into detail about what to expect.

We’ve already spoken about how it could be very appealing to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl fans, thanks to a world that’s focused on the realistic simulation of harsh real-world conditions. Which is going to work very well with the lack of safety nets that most modern gamers take for granted. It’s intended to be a test, and one that you’ll have to work very hard to pass. Therein lies its reward, though, as the journey to Vostok is fraught with danger that only the bravest and brightest among you can overcome.

Road to Vostok is planned to remain in early access for about two to four years, offering twice the content currently available.

With this feature, we will be taking a look at Road to Vostok and how it might just end up being the dream game for fans of GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

There’s a certain kind of fun to be had in playing a survival game that doesn’t just challenge your reflexes but rather tests your patience, decision-making skills, and your ability to live with long-term consequences. Road to Vostok is shaping up to be exactly that kind of experience, and we are all here for it. Positioned as a single-player hardcore survival first-person shooter with a heavy emphasis on realism and immersion, it immediately stands apart from the more accessible survival titles that dominate the market. It’s quite interesting on its own, but for fans of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, it feels like something truly special.

What makes Road to Vostok even more fascinating is the story behind its creation. The game is being developed primarily by a single developer, Antti whose unconventional background lends a unique authenticity to the project. With experience rooted in military training and a deep interest in realistic systems, the solo developer isn’t just building a game but an accurate simulation of survival under extreme conditions. His development approach has been refreshingly transparent, with frequent updates and detailed breakdowns of mechanics shared openly with the community. In an era where large studios often operate behind closed doors, this kind of transparency has helped build trust and excitement around the project which is quite important given the large scale of the experience.

Having a solo developer at the helm means a strong singular vision for the game, and that becomes a lot clearer the more you look at the game’s core design. Road to Vostok is structured around a persistent world divided into interconnected maps, where players scavenge resources, engage with hostile threats, and attempt to push further toward the mysterious “Vostok” zone. There are no safety nets here; supplies are scarce, enemies are lethal, and the environment itself can be just as dangerous as any firefight. The design philosophy leans heavily into nailing realism. Weapons have weight and unpredictability. Inventory management is deliberate and restrictive. Healing isn’t instant. Every action carries friction, and that friction is what creates tension.

For fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., that tension is instantly familiar. GSC Game World’s survival outings thrive on atmosphere and unpredictability, creating a world that feels indifferent to the player’s existence. Road to Vostok captures that same spirit, and the environments carry a haunting sense of isolation. From bleak forests to long–abandoned structures and snow-covered outposts, Road to Vostok’s map flaunts a sense of haunting quietness that feels intentional. Dynamic weather and lighting further enhance that atmosphere, transforming familiar locations into entirely different experiences depending on the time of day or environmental conditions.

But what truly elevates Road to Vostok beyond a simple homage to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is its commitment to player-driven storytelling. There are no scripted hero moments here, but rather the game heavily relies on emergent narratives – dynamic stories that arise naturally from systems intertwining with each other and reacting to the player’s decisions. You might spend an hour carefully navigating a hostile zone, avoiding conflict and conserving resources, only to lose everything in a sudden ambush. Or you might stumble upon valuable loot in an abandoned building, turning a desperate run into a triumphant escape. Or you could be stuck in a desperate firefight, and another faction rush in to give you a brief window to escape. These are not pre-designed scenarios; but rather the result of a world that reacts to you without bending to your will.

The star element of Road to Vostok’s design is permadeath which might be its most defining feature. When you die in this game, you don’t simply reload a checkpoint and try again. Your progress, your gear, your hard-earned resources are stripped away, and you obviously need to start from zero. That level of consequence fundamentally changes how the game is played, and puts a massive weight behind each decision. Do you risk pushing deeper into a dangerous area for better loot, or do you retreat and secure what you’ve already gained? Do you engage an enemy that might be guarding valuable supplies, or do you avoid the confrontation altogether? These choices carry real weight because the fail state isn’t just a temporary setback but a complete reset to the starting line.

For fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., this is where Road to Vostok feels like a dream come true. You see, the original games experimented with this level of tension, but conventional design constraints often softened the blow. Save systems in contemporary titles allow players to experiment without long-term consequences, but Road to Vostok embraces that intensity fully. It doesn’t just want you to survive; it wants you to fear failure. This singular caveat has the potential to alienate a major chunk of the player base, but this is exactly what makes success meaningful.

The game’s systems are designed to reinforce a constantly careful mindset at every turn. Inventory management forces players to prioritize essentials. Ammunition isn’t something you can waste casually, and weapons require maintenance and careful handling. Even navigation demands attention, as the absence of hand-holding mechanics means you must completely rely on environmental cues and your own awareness. It feels like an extension of the systems that we have seen in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or even Far Cry 2, but nothing compares to the intensity of what Road of Vostok is aiming for.

What’s also impressive about Road to Vostok is the fact that it punches well above its weight, especially considering its indie origins. The environments are grounded and realistic, and the production values are quite convincing. Lighting plays a crucial role in establishing the right mood, with natural shadows and atmospheric effects coming together to create a sense of constant unease. There’s a rawness to the presentation that feels appropriate for the game’s tone. The sound design complements this approach, with distant gunshots, rustling foliage, and environmental ambience creating a soundscape that feels alive and unpredictable.

Another aspect that stands out is the game’s commitment to offline, single-player design. In a market saturated with multiplayer survival experiences and live-service models, Road to Vostok takes a more traditional path. It’s not about competing with other players or grinding through seasonal content, but completely embracing a solitary journey through a hostile world, where your only real opponent is the environment itself. And the best part is that it stays relevant for the long-term through its permadeath mechanic and dynamic systems which ensures replayability is high and the world is open to experimentation.

Of course, ambition alone isn’t enough to guarantee success. Road to Vostok is still in development, and many of its systems would need careful balancing to ensure they feel challenging without becoming frustrating. Permadeath continues to be a double-edged sword. It’s great at creating incredible tension, it can also turn frustrating if not implemented thoughtfully. The key will be ensuring that deaths feel fair and players should understand what went wrong and feel motivated to try again rather than discouraged, and that’s not something that most roguelikes have been able to imitate successfully.

What makes the project especially compelling is also how it taps into a very specific niche within the gaming community. Many players crave experiences that respect their time and intelligence and don’t rely on constant rewards or artificial progression systems to maintain engagement. Road to Vostok speaks directly to that audience. It offers a slower, more deliberate kind of satisfaction – one that comes from overcoming adversity through careful planning and execution rather than brute force or heavy guidance.

For fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., it represents something even more significant: the evolution of a beloved formula. It takes the core ideas that made those games memorable – the atmosphere, unpredictability, tension and pushes them into a more uncompromising direction. It strips away the little conveniences that these inspirations offer and asks players to fully commit to the experience. That level of authenticity is rare, especially in an industry that often prioritizes accessibility and mass appeal.

In conclusion, Road to Vostok has the potential to become more than just another indie success story. It could really redefine what hardcore survival games look like in the modern era, and even become an inspiration for other developers to build upon. And if everything falls into place – the systems finally click, the tension holds, and the world remains as compelling in the end product as it looks now – then Road to Vostok might just be a breakout hit. It has great potential to emerge as one of the most talked-about and influential survival games of the near future, and we are hoping that the developer will be able to take those elements and pull off something spectacular.

The month is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to game releases. Here are our top picks for your triple-A and indie needs.

After two straight months of blockbusters, the hits just keep coming, as April presents a surprisingly packed line-up of games. The long-awaited new title from Housemarque, the next title from Just Cause and Mad Max director Christofer Sundberg, yet another high-profile first-party Xbox title coming to PS5, even a fighting game based on one of the most popular contemporary comics – it’s all here, starting with…

Samson: A Tyndalston Story

Growing up is never easy, yet there’s a bittersweet feeling in returning to your childhood town, older and wiser. Not for Samson, though. His goal in Tyndalston is to pay off a debt that increases each day. Time is money, literally – you have limited hours to choose different jobs, whether it’s a getaway driver for a bank job or tuning up some local thugs. With a combat system that’s more about fighting dirty and vehicular mayhem that would make Mad Max proud, Samson promises a lot for its $25 price when it launches on April 8th.

DarkSwitch

Think Against the Storm, but expanding vertically – that somewhat explains Cyber Temple’s DarkSwitch. With a giant tree as your base and a malevolent fog slowly creeping in, you need to build, construct defenses and sometimes venture into the unknown to survive. It probably isn’t a coincidence that Akira Yamaoka is composing the soundtrack, probably hearing the word “fog” and asking nothing more. But with a full-fledged story mode that promises over 20 hours of thrills, DarkSwitch could end up a dark horse when it launches on April 9th.

Replaced

AI trapped in a human’s body, an alternative United States under the thrall of megacorporations, post-nuclear panic – all of this and more await in Replaced, Sad Cat Studios’ long-in-development cinematic platformer, which launches on April 14th. It also features stunning 2.5D graphics and a Free Flow combat system akin to Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham franchise. Over its eight-hour runtime (11 to 12 if you stay and smell what’s left of the roses), there’s a harrowing, unpredictable experience with more than its fair share of bleak commentary on the world as we know it.

Starfield (PS5) and Terran Armada

Bethesda’s new – and not at all controversial – IP is finally coming to PS5 on April 7th alongside the latest story DLC, Terran Armada. At $49.99 for the base game ($10 for the new DLC), it’s the best time for PlayStation players to explore the Settled Systems, especially with the Free Lanes update. Besides expanding on space travel, it introduces new companions, outpost improvements, new points of interest, more upgrade systems, and more. Meanwhile, Terran Armada promises a more interesting story, its own exclusive Incursions, new ships, and even an HK-47-style companion in Delta.

Regions of Ruin: Runegate

As intriguing as the pixel art style and sheer number of systems could be, I never expected 2018’s Regions of Ruin to get a sequel. Runegate is out on April 14th and follows pretty much the same premise – venturing out into a ruined world, helping your Dwarven brethren, obtaining resources, and ultimately, establishing a place to call home. With more varied locations, sleeker visuals and much more to do, it promises to be the definitive Regions of Ruin experience.

Road to Vostok (Early Access)

If you can’t wait for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s first story DLC to hit this Summer, Road to Vostok may tide you over. Entering early access on April 7th, it tasks players with exploring the post-apocalyptic areas between Finland and Russia, ultimately culminating in Vostok. You’ll need to loot supplies and build a formidable arsenal, dealing with changing seasons, rough weather, bandits, and even the military, with death in Vostok causing you to lose everything. It’s a ways off from full release, but those looking for another challenging survival FPS may find it worthwhile.

Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

Vessel of Hatred was a steaming hot pile of whatever, but Lord of Hatred, Diablo 4’s next expansion, looks more promising. Available on April 28th, it sees the world in peril once more because Mephisto. You’ll likely be the one to lay the smackdown on him after venturing to Skovos, a scintillating new region full of new points of interest and plenty of demons to scour. Two new classes, the Paladin and Warlock, bring even more unique playstyles and build variety than before, while Blizzard is reworking the Skill Tree, bringing back the Horadric Cube, and more. Maybe this will be the release that finally elevates Diablo 4 to the next level. We can only hope.

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

What if you combine the rubber-hose animation of Cuphead with boomer-shooter-like gameplay? You get MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, a hard-boiled noir adventure focused on Jack Prepper, as he investigates a missing persons case and ends up discovering more than he bargained for. The slick hand-drawn animation is undoubtedly the appeal, as it brings Mouseburg to life in astonishing detail. Of course, this is a shooter as well, with weapons ranging from the grounded – pistols, shotguns, machine guns – to the wacky like freeze rays, corrosive turpentine and more. It’s out on April 16th and promises 12 to 20 hours of gameplay for $30.

Pragmata

Moon’s haunted, but instead of ghosts, there are homicidal robots out to get you. Launching on April 17th, Pragmata isn’t a Resident Evil-style survival horror – it’s the journey of Hugh, investigating a lunar base after lost contact and becoming swept up in the robot uprising. Together with the android Diana, he seeks a way out, providing the firepower while she hacks through an enemy’s defenses. The twist is that you have to do both simultaneously, creating a mix of puzzle-solving and tense shooting. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before, and after the demo, we only want more.

Saros

Death is only the first step in Housemarque’s latest, and protagonist Arjun Devraj has miles to go before he can sleep. Investigating Carcosa for any sign of previous Soltari expeditions, he and his crew are caught up in the Eclipse, which twists the planet’s surface, culminating in the sun’s death. And yet, death won’t let them escape. Cue close encounters with tentacled monstrosities, discovering new weapons and clues that could help. And while Saros leans much further into rogue-lite progression than Returnal, it’s also expanded on the bullet dodging with a new shield that lets you absorb some damage and send it back with a vengeance. Saros arrives on April 30th, and even if you haven’t played its predecessor, it’s looking like another killer PS5 exclusive.

Invincible VS

Seemingly addressing the lack of 3v3 fighters, Quarter Up’s take on the brutal superhero epic packs 18 playable characters – including favorites such as Invincible, Omni-Man, BattleBeast, and of course, Conquest. And if the prospect of different classes, active and counter tags, and rollback netcode for online play doesn’t interest you, there’s a story mode to experience every bloody skirmish. It’s available on April 30th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Spark in the Dark (Early Access)

As typical of a dungeon crawler as Stellar Fish’s latest title appears, there’s an inherent charm and grittiness to Spark in the Dark. Maybe it’s the isometric perspective or more methodical pacing, coupled with how inherently dark the endless Dungeon appears (which makes it all the more scary when monsters show up). It’s available on April 7th via early access and only includes the initial tiers of the Dungeon, but we’re keen on plundering its depths.

MotoGP 26

Credit where it’s due to Milestone, as this will be its third consecutive racing game in three months. MotoGP 26 is all about the thrill of competitive bike racing at the highest level, although you can opt between Arcade and Pro Experiences to determine the difficulty. With an in-depth career mode, cross-play between all platforms (Nintendo not included, sadly), and new disciplines like Minibikes, Flat Tracks, Production Bikes, and more, this could be the series’ most feature-packed entry yet.

WILL: Follow the Light

Cropping up more than once during Steam Next Fest and impressing with its visuals, WILL: Follow the Light is a hard-hitting adventure focused on a seemingly simple goal: Returning home. It’s far from easy, however, as Will must brave islands, mountains and even the sea to reach his hometown and save his son. Puzzles and environmental storytelling abound, but it’s all about the atmosphere and how deep you’ll go to learn the truth. WILL: Follow the Light launches on April 28th for PC.

Kiln

Listen, I’m not saying this is exactly what I expected from Double Fine, which has delivered some of the finest platforms to date. But Kiln is…curious in a way that fits the developer’s profile. After all, what other multiplayer title invites you to become a pot, finely sculpted by your hands and scuttling off into an arena for some ceramic destruction? The fact that a pot’s design influences its playstyle is even more intriguing. Whether it figuratively blows up or not, Kiln is out on April 23rd for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

After a great year of games in 2025, 2026 is already shaping up to be as good if not better with some big hitters and a slew of inventive titles making their way to our screens.

We’re always on the lookout for great games, and we just got a bunch of them courtesy of the most recent State of Play. But what about a few great ideas that weren’t featured at the event? There are quite a few titles that are worthy of attention, standing out with unique value propositions and creative flourishes that deserve a spotlight.

Well, that’s exactly what we’re setting out to do. Here are a few recently announced titles that are sure to make 2026 and the next few years all the more exciting with their presence. Let’s get started!

1. Sons of Sparta

This one was quite a pleasant surprise, being made available right after its reveal at State of Play. If you love hard-hitting action, big set-piece battles, and a setting that goes all-in on spectacle and emotion, this one’s an absolute no-brainer.

It’s a 2D platformer that rewinds the clock, diving into a protagonist’s past as he fights alongside his brother and begins carving out his place on the battlefield. It leans heavily into tight platforming challenges, while its spear-and-shield combat proves surprisingly addictive, rewarding precision, smart parries, and well-timed evasions.

2. The Trilogy Remake

It was a welcome surprise to see the announcement land at the show, especially with a full remake project on the table for players. We’re eager to see how the updated versions modernize the classic gameplay loops, sharpen the pacing, and refine the combat feel while keeping the general flow and feel intact.

Either way, we’ll be jumping in the moment it’s playable, though it sounds like it may be a while, with development still in the early stages.

3. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse

It’s always great to join one of the Belmont’s on a monster hunting adventure, and this one’s setting in Paris has us fascinated by its gothic vibe and buttery smooth combat animations. Of course, the Vampire Killer is making its return to your side along with new weapon types that let you take the fight to whatever monstrosities the game throws at you.

While details about its story are a tad scarce at this time, we’re sure that Konami and the Dead Cells team are up to the task of making it one worthy of the long-standing franchise.

4. Gothic Remake

This is another remake that we’re itching to get our hands on considering just how much work is going into making it a game that stays true to the classic RPG while modernizing it to make it appealing to a new generation of players.

With the most recent in a series of videos about its development showcasing how the team has crafted its NPC character models from the ground up, this one’s shaping up to be a very fine addition to a slew of remakes of classic titles. Even better is the fact that it’s currently scheduled for a 2026 release.

5. Samson

This one’s quite unique in that it features a man in a leather jacket literally taking on the world in order to pay off his debts and save his family. That’s easier said than done, however, as the city of Tyndalston is not an ideal place where one can earn their fair share without a little bit of violence involved.

Miss a day’s payment, and you’re even deeper in the debt trap with both the law and the lawless out to get you. This action brawler is going to keep the pressure on you, but of course, it gives you everything you need to come out on top. Just don’t expect it to give you cash or mercy.

6. Aphelion

While we’ve seen our fair share of sci-fi adventures where humanity needs to move out from the Earth thanks to hostile living conditions, we’re still excited for Aphelion as it does things a little differently. You see, it focuses on two explorers stranded on a potentially new home for their fellow humans, their ship having crashed, and one of them being injured in the process.

With two protagonists with their own abilities and skills, and a story that explores the burden of duty in a dire situation, this one could pull at your heartstrings more than you’d like to admit.

7. John Wick

It’s always going to be great to see Keanu Reeves play another video game badass after his work as Johnny Silverhand. And John Wick’s excellent take on the character’s signature gun-fu style is looking very promising in the reveal trailer at State of Play, February 2026.

Saber Interactive looks like it’s staying true to the character while bringing all of the action and chaos that seems to chase him around to the table in a title we’re excited to play, although that could take a while.

8. Knight’s Path

When life gives you lemons, you pick up a sword and wander the land in search of redemption. At least, that’s what Arlyk, the protagonist of this action-RPG set in ancient Rome, sets out to do in order to rebuild his life as a noble.

With combat that’s looking like you’re going to earn your reputation as a swordsman without comparison, this one is going to have us spending a lot of time with mechanics that are designed to make each swing or slash of your blade count. Add in an immersive world and a potentially memorable cast of characters, and you have yourself a winner.

9. Kena: Scars of Kosmora

Kena is now older, wiser, and more determined to bring her unique blend of empathy and compassion to Kosmora, a brand new location that’s opened its doors to her. She’s more confident in her role as a guide and is determined to help the living as well as the dead as she goes about her duties.

That’s good news for us as it gives us more opportunities to experience a story that hopefully retains the wit and charm of Bridge of Spirits with a combat system that seems fast, fluid, and, most importantly, fun.

10. Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 2

We’re never going to say no to any opportunity to play more Metal Gear Solid, and the chance to replay MGS4 on a modern console without having to boot up our admittedly ancient PS3 is always a reason to celebrate.

And with Peace Walker retaining its online play components, this is a title we’re eager to get our hands on when August 2026 finally comes around. It’s time to round up your friends and take on a Metal Gear title that was built around cooperative play in this second addition to the Master Collection series from Konami.

11. GreedFall 2: The Dying World 1.0

The prequel to Greedfall has been in early access for a while now, but it’s finally ready to face the world this March. We’re stoked to return to Tree Fradee, a place where your choices carry wait and there’s always a bit of danger for those adventurers who care to go looking for it.

If this new title is anything like its predecessor, this one could have us spending more than a few hours finding out that our actions have consequences, and ones that we didn’t expect more often than not.

12. ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies

The spiritual successor to Disco Elysium is definitely up there with the more interesting concepts we’ve seen in recent years. You play as a former secret agent who harbors dark secrets and is now working as a PI after being forced out of the agency in disgrace.

The story is about rebuilding burned bridges as much as it is a mystery, where you need to think carefully about your actions while also paying attention to your crumbling mental state. That’s a lot to take in, but it’s going to be worth it from everything we’ve seen about this one.

13. Road to Vostok

Coming to early access in April 2026, this post-apocalyptic survival title takes you to Vostok, a harsh place in which even a silly error could mean the end of your adventure, with permadeath being a constant threat that hovers over you as you make your way through the story.

With a dynamic world that features a comprehensive weather system, multiple hostile factions all determined to give your character a premature death, and of course, a ton of loot to be gathered, Road to Vostok has us quite enthusiastic for all of it.

14. IKUMA – The Frozen Compass

Any adventure where you’re accompanied by a NPC is one that’s worth it in our book, and this one definitely caught our eye with its unique visuals and art style. You play as Sam, a boy who finds himself alone and stranded on an island in the Arctic with his loyal furry friend Ellie at his side.

Together, they must find a way home, braving all of the challenges in their way in a coming-of-age story that forces Sam to confront his past in order to ensure he has a future.

15. Project Windless

If you liked The Bird That Drinks Tears series of novels, this is a game that’s going to be a treat for you. It’s an open-world RPG set in the same universe as the books, placing you in the shoes (metaphorically, of course) of a giant humanoid bird who is armed with a pretty cool pair of dual blades and out on a mission that has you taking on several enemies who are quite skilled at coming at you from all directions based off what we’ve seen in the trailer.

This is a game that we’re eager to play thanks to its focused, single-player experience.

And that’s a wrap on our most anticipated titles for the rest of this year and perhaps a few that are going into 2027 and beyond. Of course, you can be sure you’re going to hear from us the moment new information on any one of them becomes available.

With this feature, we take a look at 15 new survival games of 2024 and beyond.

The survival game genre continues to grow at a rapid pace, and plenty of AA and AAA developers are hard at work on providing their takes on the genre with plenty of promising releases slated to come out in the coming weeks and months. With this feature, we will be taking a look at 15 new survival games of 2024 and beyond.

State of Decay 3

Despite not starting life on the best foot forward, State of Decay 2 was able to turn the tides of fate around with a slew of meaningful content updates that have made the game better in more than just one way. State of Decay 3 will most likely build upon those foundations, and hopefully create a sequel that’s bigger and better with updated graphics, new enemy types, and a greater focus on survival. There’s no word on when it will be released, but we know that it will come out for Xbox Series X/S and P

Ark 2: Survival Ascended

The original Ark was a smash hit thanks to a surprisingly addictive gameplay loop and interesting creature design, and those merits seem primed to be taken to the next level with Ark 2: Survival Ascended. The sequel also looks to be placing a bigger focus on the narrative side of things with a star-studded cast that includes but is not limited to Vin Diesel, and all that sounds like a very interesting prospect for the game. It comes out for Xbox Series X/S and PC sometime in the near future.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornoby

GSC Game World is hard at work on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, which is being built using Unreal Engine 5. Set against the backdrop of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 thrusts you into a world teeming with all sorts of mutated creatures and soldiers ready to maul you at the smallest of wrong turns. The gameplay and visuals are looking to be of supreme quality, and we are stoked to check it out when it releases on 5 September 2024 for PC and Xbox consoles.

Pacific Drive

Pacific Drive offers a weird but interesting mix of genres. It’s a driving simulator at its core, but it incorporates well-known survival progression mechanics to craft an interesting gameplay loop. It essentially puts you in the driver seat of a station wagon, and you must collect resources and upgrade the vehicle to finally get out of a radioactive zone. Pacific Drive is out now for PS5 and PC.

Road to Vostok

Road to Vostok is all about embarking on a long trek through a war-torn region. It’s a brutal survival game that features realistic shooting mechanics, complex progression trees, and an open world brimming with all sorts of dangers. Add to that permadeath mechanics and the ability to trade items with other players, and Road to Vostok becomes a pretty compelling survival experience for genre fans.

Project Ferocious

OMYOG’s upcoming Project Ferocious feels like the perfect tribute to classic shooters like Turok and Dino Crisis with its focus on hunting dinosaurs and exploring lush jungle environments. The shooting mechanics look fantastic, and the developer promises a dynamic gameplay loop which sounds pretty enticing. It comes out for PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in the near future.

Sons of the Forest 1.0

Sons of the Forest serves as an excellent sequel to The Forest, and the bevy of gameplay improvements has made this game better than the original in almost every conceivable way. Sons of the Forest has had some great critical and commercial reception since its release in early access, and version 1.0 is now available on PC. Endlight Games has stated that this release will have plenty of new changes, and while the details of those improvements are shrouded in mystery – it’s definitely worth looking forward to nevertheless.

Frostpunk 2

The original Frostpunk managed to win over the hearts of many survival game fans with its brutal simulation mechanics and tough choices, and those strengths will most likely be taken to the next level with the sequel. In Frostpunk 2, players will have to make tough choices to ensure the city stays warm and safe. You will have to craft controversial laws, keep a check on the several factions that reside within the city, and keep tabs on a ton of other variables to ensure a smooth flow of operations. It all sounds pretty captivating, and we will be checking it out when it comes out sometime in 2024.

The Alters

The Alters tasks you to make your way out of a distant planet after crash landing on its surface, and while that might sound like a generic narrative setup for a survival game – developer 11-bit Studios has quite a bit of tricks up its sleeve that makes this game a lot more interesting than its contemporaries. For starters, you can make clones of yourself and delegate tasks to them which is a pretty interesting concept with a ton of potential. Furthermore, there are elements of decision-making and crafting that all come together to make The Alters a game that’s worth looking out for. It comes out for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S sometime this year.

Light No Fire

Hello Games is no stranger to survival elements, as evidenced by No Man’s Sky, but Light No Fire offers a much larger scale. Announced as the first “real” open world with an Earth-sized planet to explore, players can create buildings and form towns, explore various biomes, uncover resources, explore its origins and maybe tame some wild creatures like dragons to serve as mounts. While the fight for survival is “constant,” there are no restrictions on where you can go. Climb underwater, go deep sea diving or sailing, and much more.

While some may want to jokingly proclaim it as “No Man’s Earth” (somehow missing the slam dunk of “No Man’s Land”), Light No Fire is incredibly ambitious, offering all of these with role-playing elements, various fantasy races, and co-op. There’s no release date, but it’s in development for PC.

ALOFT

Aloft is an upcoming survival sandbox game that takes place on floating islands in the sky. Players can dive in solo or co-op with their friends, and explore the endless skies to take control of the many islands peppered throughout its massive world while fighting the enemies that lie in your way. In addition to exploration, you can majestically fly through the air, collect various resources, and discover ancient ruins in this cozy-looking survival game. Aloft is scheduled to be released in 2024 on PC.

Once Human

Developed by Starry Studio, Once Human puts you on the path to uncovering a massive secret behind a dark corrupting force known as the Stardust. Set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by fierce monsters and hordes of undead, Once Human’s gameplay revolves around exploring these desolate ruins and fighting gargantuan bosses while working on building out your character with strong weapons and high-level gear. Once Human also offers co-op options to join forces with friends, which should make it a pretty fun time for survival game enthusiasts. It comes out for PC in Q3 2024.

Rooted

Built using Unreal Engine 5, Rooted promises brutal survival mechanics in a post-apocalyptic world brimming with all manner of dangers like ferocious undead creatures and scarcity of important resources. It presents its post-apocalyptic world in great detail thanks to Unreal Engine 5’s impressive feature set, and that combined with the systemic game design makes it a compelling experience. It comes out for PC sometime in the near future.

Outbreak Island

Outbreak Island is all about a detective who has been stranded on an island and must now solve an overarching mystery surrounding the mystical land. The gameplay juggles between resource gathering, investigating clues scattered throughout the island, and shooting down enemies with a wide array of weapons – all of which sounds like a lot of fun. It will be released for PC sometime in the near future.

Derelicts

Developed by Romain, DERELICTS is set in a future where Earth has been covered by strange radiation – and you must embark on a grand adventure to get to the bottom of this mystery. It’s a simple narrative setup, but DERELICTS manages to impress with its intricate crafting systems that let you come up with all sorts of interesting ideas to delegate tasks like resource building and crafting to custom-built machines. It looks like a game that will be worth sinking your teeth into, and it releases for PC sometime in the near future.

Road to Vostok is an ambitious one-man project that's looking to be one hell of a survival horror game.

The first-person shooter genre is easily one of the most popular ones in all of gaming and has stood the test of time over the course of multiple decades at this point. With so many developers providing so many different takes on this formula, fans now have so many sub-genres to choose from – arena shooters, military shooters, horror shooters, and of course, survival shooters. The latter of these sub-genres is mostly dominated by PC-centric franchises such as the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and among others. Of course, there’s also a budding indie scene that has given us games like DayZ, and Escape from Tarkov over the last decade or so.

In this feature series, we are shining a much-need spotlight on many such promising experiences spanning multiple genres. Today, we will be looking at Road To Vostok which looks to be a pretty ambitious game. While it’s certainly not the most groundbreaking in its themes and ideas, it boasts some interesting background research and features in-depth survival mechanics that might end up being appealing to many hardcore players of the genre.

Set against a post-apocalyptic backdrop situated somewhere between the Russian and Finnish border, Road to Vostok is all about trying to survive in these hostile environments and fighting any and all opposition forces that lie in your wake. Road To Vostok doesn’t seem to have much in the name of a story, which isn’t too surprising given that the game is made by just a single developer. The campaign will revolve around the player character starting from the east end of the Russian border and progressing through the world area-by-area until they reach Vostok – the game’s final destination.

On the topic of the game world, Road to Vostok’s map is divided into several zones. Each zone will have a specific danger level, which will be defined by the number of enemies in the area and the rarity of loot that you will come across. The developer has said that these areas will be based on real locations, and from what we have seen so far – it looks really promising to say the least. That said, it wouldn’t be a seamless open-world experience, and traveling through these multiple zones will require passing through checkpoints which will also have an area-specific challenge that players will have to overcome. While that may prove to be a downer to some, the advantage to dividing the map into chunks is that the game would most likely be less taxing on hardware which would open the experience to a lot more players.

As mentioned previously, players will start out on the east end of the map and work to accumulate proper gear and weapons as they start moving towards the west. Once players cross the border to Vostok, the game will radically ramp up in difficulty and a permadeath mechanic will kick in. If you die at any point during this section, you will be robbed of all progress and loot, and sent back to the start. It’s an interesting spin on this rogue-lite mechanic, and we can’t wait to see how it will work out in action. The game world will also be littered with dynamic events such as quests from traders, crash site investigations, collecting airdrops, and more – pursuing which will net players essential resources for the tough road ahead. Additionally, Road to Vostok will also feature a dynamic weather system – although ramifications of weather conditions to the moment-to-moment gameplay aren’t known as of yet.

Road to Vostok is being worked upon by a single developer who previously worked as a military lieutenant for 10 years and subsequently left his job to pursue his passion for game development. So it comes as no surprise that the game features some really hardcore survival mechanics that are reflective of the many problems that soldiers might face in active duty.

Firstly, let’s talk about Road to Vostok‘s movement and shooting mechanics. The developer seems to have put a ton of effort into physics and player weight, with the player character having full-body inertia which results in a realistic rendition of jump mechanics and what looks to be just the right body weight. There’s also a realistic shooting system which the developer calls procedural shooting which we are assuming to be an amount of randomness in recoil patterns.

Players will also have the option to customize their weapons to their heart’s content in a weapon attachment system. There’s also a condition stat to each weapon, and we are assuming that a gun’s performance will drain out after prolonged usage which will most likely result in the procedural shooting system kicking into a higher gear. On the topic of combat situations, Road to Vostok‘s developer has also placed special emphasis on enemy AI – which will supposedly have a complex and dynamic behavior tree as they navigate architecturally-challenging terrain and hunt down players in a ferocious manner. The only confirmed enemy type seems to be human soldiers, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if the final game also ends up featuring mutants and turned monsters – given the post-apocalyptic setting.

Now coming to the actual survival mechanics. Players will have to keep tabs on a ton of medical stats such as the likes of fatigue, strain, bleeding, and hypothermia among others during their travels which would have knock-on effects on core stats like health, stamina, accuracy, and others. Road to Vostok features over 20 such medical conditions with the goal of providing an accurate simulation of warfare. As such, players will have to stock up on essential medicines and resources to have a shot at surviving all the late-game challenges that Vostok has to offer. There’s also a character progression system, and collecting XP will advance player level which would most likely increase core stats such as health and stamina.

The fact that all of these promising concepts are being worked upon by a single developer is almost unbelievable. Sure, the game has some less-than-stellar aspects to it such as sub-par visual quality but that does very little to fade the amount of excitement that most fans would most likely be having for this release. The actual development work has been progressing at a good pace, and the developer posts regular updates through devlogs on social media channels – which has us confident that the developer will end up seeing the project through to completion. While the game wouldn’t be having any multiplayer or co-op elements at launch, the developer has expressed their intent to add these elements through post-launch updates.

However, it’s also important that fans keep expectations in check for now. Given the complexity and the scale of the project, fans shouldn’t expect the game to be coming out anytime soon. But given the developer’s passion for the project and their subject-matter expertise, we are confident that Road to Vostok is in the right hands. While the road to release might be a long one, we sincerely hope that the game ends up doing justice to the many innovative mechanics it has been working towards.
