Regarding the lack of a PlayStation version, Cellar Door Games said it's a "small team," but "we're always working on things."

With Cellar Door Games’ Rogue Legacy 2 celebrating its first anniversary next month, the developer is prepping one last free update for players. It adds new Special Modes, though what those could be is unknown.

Of course, there’s also the question of whether the acclaimed rogue-lite Metroidvania will ever come to PlayStation. Though Cellar Door didn’t confirm whether PS4 and PS5 versions were in development, it said “we’re always working on things.” Since it’s a small team, fans may need to wait longer for further updates, but never say never.

Rogue Legacy 2 is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch. The story sees players venturing into a fallen kingdom with unique biomes. Players can choose different classes like Ranger, Dragoon and even Chef.

As you die and your descendants step up to the plate, they have unique quirks that would drastically affect play styles, like colorblindness, a permanent spotlight, and more. For more details, check out our review.

You may get knocked down, and get up again, but these supremely frustrating bosses are insanely good at keeping you down.

There have been a fair number of challenging games this year, though not all would have bosses. That doesn’t mean there haven’t been any worthy contenders. This year may have some of the toughest boss fights ever, thanks in no small part to Santa Monica Studio and FromSoftware. Fights that may have you questioning your sanity after the tenth or possibly hundredth death.

Let’s look at the 11 hardest boss fights of 2022 and what made them so challenging.

Gna – God of War Ragnarok

The new Valkyrie Queen, Gna, is probably easier than Sigrun from God of War (2018). Underestimate her at your peril, though, as she possesses a wide variety of slashes, slices, ranged attacks (including Bifrost), unblockable attacks, and whatnot. If that weren’t enough, she can toss out two glaives in a spinning motion, afflicting you with Fire, Frost, Poison or Bifrost. Did we mention stomps and slams, each causing immense damage? You’ll need max level, fully upgraded gear and weapons, and much more to even stand a chance against Gna.

Punishing bosses, brutal mechanics and controls that took a while to master - 2022's toughest games had all these and more.

The year has been full of memorable gaming experiences. Exploring the Forbidden West, experiencing Ragnarok, and even playing the trombone in the most embarrassing way possible have stood out this year. Nevertheless, there have been a fair number of challenges to face. Let’s look at 15 of the most difficult games of 2022 and what made them so tough.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is as perilous as any of the Souls games, but on a larger scale. Nevertheless, knowledge is power, from knowing enemy placements and patterns to weaknesses, and will ultimately tip the scales in your favor. The Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast and its asinine hitboxes can still die in a fire, though.

The best is yet to come for Microsoft's ninth-generation consoles, but there have been plenty of must-play titles since it first launched.

When factoring in all of the exclusives that the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, the Xbox Series X/S feels kind of…barren in comparison. Nevertheless, there have been some standouts and Game Pass has helped provide a platform for several excellent games that would have otherwise gone unplayed. Let’s take a look at 30 of the best Xbox Series X/S titles of all time, to date.

Elden Ring

It’s easy to dismiss Elden Ring as little more than open-world Dark Souls. But it takes the sheer freedom of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and packs it with weapons, Incantations, Sorceries, armor, enemies, mini-bosses, side quests, lore and quirky characters. Elden Ring is a dense experience that goes from one spectacle to the next.

An engine overhaul, changes to biome generation and Biome Burdens in New Game Plus, a Skill Tree reset option, and more wait.

Following its surprise release on Nintendo Switch yesterday, Cellar Door Games’ Rogue Legacy 2 has also received a massive new update. Patch v.1.1.0, aka The Fabled Heroes Update, includes a complete overhaul of the engine to improve performance, and numerous new weapons, spells, and Relics. New Fabled Weapons include Stygian Sharpshooters and the Lich King/Queen from Rogue Legacy 1.

The Biome Burdens in New Game Plus have also been rehauled, providing new choices and challenges for players. The biome generation has seen lots of changes to ensure more rewards and some additional power for those who fully clear areas. Even the red portals benefit from the increased rewards, offering a gold chest, Health tree, and Relic room, though their challenge has been increased.

The option to reset your Skill Tree has been added to House Rules for those who want to spec into something else. In addition to native versions being in development for Mac and Linux, the game is also fully playable in Japanese.

Check out some of the patch notes below and the full notes here. Rogue Legacy 2 is also available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. You can read our official review here.

Rogue Legacy 2 – v1.1.0 – The Fabled Heroes Update

PATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Weapons, Spells, and Relics Galore – Tons of new Weapons and Spells are coming down the pipe for you to add to your repertoire. From big community requests like the Lich King’s Crow Staff, to more eclectic weapons like a haunted Umbrella, the latest update has a ton of neat new items to show off. We’re also making the experience even wilder with new Relics that really take the cake. We hope you’re as big a fan of these new additions as we are!

NG+, and Fixing the Flow – Tons of gameplay changes have been made based on community feedback. We’ve rehauled the Biome Burdens to give players more control in how they tweak the NG+ experience, while also adding a ton of new choices to really customize each adventure. If you haven’t stepped into NG+ before, now is a great time, and if you’re a vet, there’s a whole new set of challenges that await you.

A Braver, Newer World – We’ve gone over biome generation to make every area more rewarding and let players creep more power if they invest in full clears.

More Risk/More Reward – We’ve also made massive changes to red portals to make the decision-making more dynamic. Their difficulty has been bumped up, but their rewards have significantly increased as well. On top of the gold chest, clearing these bad boys will now net you a Health tree and a Relic room to boot.

Play Your Way – Even more options have been added to the House Rules, to allow for the most curated experience ever. We’re also including the oft-requested option to reset your Skill Tree if you ever feel your money was not well spent.

Engine Rehaul – Considering how important movement is to a player’s success in Rogue Legacy 2, better performance was always a major goal of ours. We’ve finally had the opportunity to strike this off the bucket list, and a single note in the Patch Highlights doesn’t do justice to how much work was actually put into improving the experience. No part of the game was left untouched, with many of the fundamental systems completely rebuilt. Of course, this meant potentially breaking much of what wasn’t broken before, and while we’ve done our best to ensure the experience remains unchanged (other than making things run a lot smoother), we suspect a few bugs may have slipped through.

Even More for the Masses – Now that RL2 has been released on the Nintendo Switch, we’re working on native versions for Mac and Linux that we hope to have ready soon. And as a sweet cherry on top, the game has been fully translated in Japanese!

CLASS ADDITIONS/CHANGES

New Fabled Weapons

Stygian Sharpshooters. Find the best angles, and bring the pain to your foes with the power of ricochets. Hope you didn’t skip math class!

Lich King/Queens. The fan favourite from Rogue Legacy 1 returns. Wield the power of the almighty Crow Storm staff and turn your foes into bird food – magic bird food!

Brigands. Switch sides and arm yourself with the powerful blunderbuss and send foes flying with this shotgun-like weapon. Just be careful of the recoil.

Demon Tamers. Let the monsters fight for you! Partner up with the umbrella shaped Kasa-Obake and Mary Poppins your way to victory.

The acclaimed rogue-lite Metroidvania is available on the Nintendo eShop for $25. It previously launched for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Cellar Door Games’ acclaimed rogue-lite Metroidvania title Rogue Legacy 2 is out now for Nintendo Switch. It was shadow-dropped during the recent Indie World Showcase and is currently available on the Nintendo eShop for $25. Check out the launch trailer below.

Much like its predecessor, Rogue Legacy 2 sees players exploring a massive castle, tackling bosses and upgrading their estate to earn permanent bonuses. When a character dies, you’re given a choice of descendants to carry on the legacy. The twist is that they have various quirks, from color blindness to fragility (meaning they’ll die on a single hit). The riskier options present bonus modifiers to gold earned, which helps in progression.

In addition to several new classes, Rogue Legacy 2 allows the mixing of different class-specific items and abilities. You’ll also encounter build-specific situations in biomes, Relics which alter your play style, House Rules for adjusting the difficulty and accessibility, and multiple New Game Plus runs.

For more details, check out our review here. Rogue Legacy 2 is also available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

For as good as these games are, they still have some pretty annoying flaws that are hard to ignore. Take a closer look here.

We live in an era of incredibly great games, from massive open worlds that are wondrous to behold to expansive stories with top-notch production values. However, no game is perfect. Even if you have a favorite game that you’ll always return to, it has at least one flaw that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Let’s take a look at 10 games which are amazing and fun to play but still have their share of such flaws. Story spoilers for certain games follow so be warned.

Genshin Impact – Time-Limited Story Content

For all of its annoying gacha elements, Genshin Impact is still a pretty good game. The story takes some time to get going and having to grind out Adventure Ranks to access main quests can be a chore at first. However, you’re quickly swept up into a magical world of Archons, mythical beings, assassins, and regions rich in culture. New updates provide additional content and event quests, and they can be pretty good in expanding the overall story.

However, some are also time-limited, just like the events themselves. Not being able to revisit them is annoying enough for any player but new players are just straight out of luck. Big moments like the introduction of Scaramouche and Teyvat’s false sky in Unreconciled Stars are unplayable now. It’s done in the name of FOMO and whatnot – various other gacha titles are the same – but it’s just that much more annoying to become invested in the lore at your own pace.

Cellar Door Games' eagerly awaited rogue-lite follow-up is even more addictive than the original, and easily it's best yet.

There have been dozens of rogue-lites over the years, and even some that tried to combine both genres for a smorgasbord of exploratory mirth and punishing death. Randomly generated rooms, special abilities that could open up new areas (along with making previous areas easier to explore) and immense resource gathering, all for tiny bits of progression. Of course, of the many titles that attempted this formula, few have been as successful as Cellar Door Games’ Rogue Legacy.

Released in 2013 and focused on fighting through a cursed castle with an increasing number of heirs, it was a near-perfect combination of platforming, puzzle-solving, combat and rogue-lite progression. In that sense, Rogue Legacy 2 is Rogue Legacy at its core. If you enjoyed the first game and craved more, then you’ll more than likely love the sequel. But it does a lot more than just add some new areas, bosses and stories, slap a “2” on the end and call it a day (that too after almost two years in early access).

"For as intriguing as the overall story can be, Rogue Legacy 2 is about the rogue and legacy aspects first and foremost."

Rogue Legacy 2 expands on the original, taking the same approach in spirit and filling it with all kinds of new ideas. More intensive platforming; responsive combat that’s easy to get into but nuanced as more classes and skills are thrown into the mix; and above all else, a degree of freshness to every run, whether it’s in new challenges to overcome or new Heirs to play as. And just when you think everything has been figured out, there’s a new twist or system that can turn things upside down.

As you infiltrate a kingdom that’s mysteriously fallen to ruin, bits and pieces of events past are made clear through various journal entries. You learn of a rebellion incited by two individuals identified as Z and J, along with the Estuaries who served leadership roles in the kingdom and fell in their own ways. The bread-crumb trail of revelations, from the Shift which causes rooms to change with each new run to the Black Roots that emerge throughout and regrow when no one is looking, are many. What your role is as the heir carrying the souls of their ancestors is also a mystery.

None of this is forced down your throat though – it’s possible to explore and pick up these entries or simply ignore them. For as intriguing as the overall story can be, Rogue Legacy 2 is about the rogue and legacy aspects first and foremost. You’ll venture through different biomes in the kingdom, gather Gold, Red Essence and Ores, and more than likely meet your end, swiftly or otherwise. Then it’s up to your descendant to carry on. Venture through the hub, give all of your Gold to Charon (minus however much can be stored with the Living Safe) and off you go.

"Though you start off as a Knight with a basic swing and shield for blocking damage, classes like the Ranger, Mage, Gunslinger, and Barbarian quickly become available."

By upgrading the manor, your descendants gain permanent bonuses like increased health, weapon damage, spell damage and new classes. Get further into the skill tree and vendors like the Blacksmith, who creates weapons and armor from blueprints, to the Enchantress who crafts Runes that can be equipped for a myriad of benefits (like health gain on kill). Sooner than later, you’re pouring Gold into increasing Intelligence to improve health drops, more starting armor, increased Rune weight capacity, and increased weapon and spell crit damage.

Of course, you also gain benefits like the Sage Totem which unlocks Mastery Rank, allowing each class to receive benefits on leveling up; Stat Bonuses based on how much Gold is given to Charon; Lady Quinn, the training dummy; and the Architect who will lock down a world layout for a cost, thus eliminating any randomness.

Entering the kingdom and its various biomes is where the real fun begins. Though you start off as a Knight with a basic swing and shield for blocking damage, classes like the Ranger, Mage, Gunslinger, and Barbarian quickly become available. The Ranger can attack from range, unleashing guaranteed weapon crits with the right timing; the Mage’s attack siphons Mana away from enemies to fuel their spells; the Gunslinger has a pistol for attacking from mid-range and can throw out explosives that block projectiles; and so on.

Each class brings their own unique play-style and nuance, whether it’s the Gunslinger’s last eight bullets being able to skill crit or the Mage gaining the Charged status after spending 50 Mana which makes the next attack a skill crit. To further mix things up, each gets their own random spell, traits and starting Relics. Traits can include things like items and currency being knocked away, enemies being “censored” with mosaics or even having one HP.

"Things get even crazier when you replace your starting weapon and skill, whether at the beginning or in the middle of a run. "

Certain Traits can make the game much harder, whether it’s removing the invulnerability window when taking damage or rendering your character unable to deal damage at all. The benefit to choosing them is a bonus to any Gold obtained, potentially increasing it by over 200 percent. Relics can also be used to balance the more troublesome Traits, providing benefits like healing from enemies slain by critical hits, burn damage from weapon hits and so on.

But this comes at the cost of Resolve – when Resolve dips below 100 percent, your max HP decreases. Even if you choose an Heir without Relics, deciding which ones to take during a run becomes that much more important (though there are ways to increase your max Resolve and max health). Things get even crazier when you replace your starting weapon and skill, whether at the beginning or in the middle of a run.

I started as a Ranger that would eventually wield a Ronin’s Katana (with the very edge of an attack being a guaranteed crit), a Valkyrie’s Halberd for deflecting projectiles (which restores Mana and reset the skill), the Boxer’s Combo passive (providing a two percent damage increase for each stack up to 30 stacks) and 700 HP. That’s on top of Traits like slain enemies dropping explosives and no invulnerability window when taking damage. This is only one of the many possible builds available – you could even find a Fabled weapon like Charon’s Scythe which dramatically alters your attacks (for better and worse).

All of this would be meaningless if the controls weren’t up to snuff especially with some of the more platforming heavy sections. Thankfully, they’re fairly tight and responsive, whether you’re dashing through hazards or using the Spin Kick to bounce off of objects and enemies. The level design is similarly great with each biome having its own hook.

"However, all of this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what’s available in Rogue Legacy 2."

Citadel Agartha is a castle filled with traps, skeletons, and powerful knights; Axis Mundi is a village to the East that requires skillful use of the Spin Kick to progress; and so on and so forth. Each location has a different Relic to collect which augments your exploration abilities further. They’re mandatory for the latter biomes but there’s nothing stopping you from exploring the earlier ones, even if you’re ill-equipped.

The random arrangement of rooms further enlivens the joy of exploring each location. You’ll encounter Fairy Chest rooms that require hitting a number of enemies and/or targets without losing health to platforming challenges and puzzles; challenge rooms that require defeating waves of enemies; and much more. Along with some common rooms that appear in all runs, there are rooms tuned to different classes. It keeps things fresh and challenging, though there may sometimes be a room that’s little more than a sudden hazard. Without going into spoilers, the boss fights are also challenging but incredibly fun with some nice surprises throughout.

However, all of this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of what’s available in Rogue Legacy 2. There are Scars which serve as optional challenges – complete them quickly and you’ll earn currency that can increase the cap on some skills and Mastery Rank levels. There are alternate variants for classes like the Ballistics Archer who can’t fire in the air but makes up for it with a different, more powerful bow.

Different equipment can be mixed and matched to provide Unity bonuses which can increase your max Resolve, Dexterity for more weapon crit damage, Focus for Spell Crit damage, and so on (with different upgrades also available for each gear piece). I haven’t even gotten to New Game Plus aka Threads with their Burdens that dramatically alter the game while providing tougher enemies, more resources, and even tougher bosses.

"As accessible as it is immensely complex, Rogue Legacy 2 is a stellar title that will keep you coming back for just one more quirky run."

If there’s one major complaint that could be levied against Rogue Legacy 2, it’s that upgrading skills and equipment can feel grindy at times. The more invested into the estate, the more costly subsequent upgrades can be. A recent patch smoothed out some of the economy issues, especially in the early-going, but you may still have to revisit some areas just to scrounge up enough Gold for a few measly upgrades. At least the Gold bonuses from certain Traits go a ways towards alleviating this.

Rogue Legacy 2 may not be at the very apex of design like Hollow Knight or match its story and rogue-lite appeal. The difficulty, especially when exploring a new biome for the first time, may also prove irksome for some (though there are the House Rules for customizing enemy health, damage taken and much more if you want a more chilled out experience).

Overall though, it’s a great combination of both genres, offering near-endless replay value, a compelling narrative to unearth, a gorgeous and clean aesthetic, and fun gameplay. As accessible as it is immensely complex, Rogue Legacy 2 is a stellar title that will keep you coming back for just one more quirky run.

Cellar Door Games’ Rogue Legacy 2 launched last week after spending roughly two years in early access. It’s now received its first post-launch patch which offers a number of changes to the economy, the skill tree and more. A new “Flick Stick check” has also been implemented for player inputs in order to prevent random turning (while the Left Stick takes priority over the right when aiming).

Ores, which are essentially for Blacksmith weapons and armor along with upgrades, have received increased scaling based on the room level. Bonus Ore from Gold Chests has also been increased from 150 to 200 percent while the drop rate and scaling rate from Commanders has been increased. The patch also lowers the base cost and scaling for Tier 1-3 Armor, Focus and Dexterity skills along with Tier 3 Strength, Intelligence, Vitality, Equip Weight and Rune Weight. So if you’ve been feeling the grind on some skills, this should help.

The Living Safe’s capacity has also been increased from 1250 to 1500 per level while the Gold conversion base cost has been reduced from 700 to 375. Check out some of the patch notes below and the full notes here for more details. Rogue Legacy 2 is currently available for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Rogue Legacy 2 – Patch v1.0.1

TURNING AND THE STICK FLICK PROBLEM

In general, players manage the input on their gamepad joystick in one of two ways, which we call “Easing” and “Flicking”. When moving the joystick to neutral, “Easers” keep their thumb on the stick but loosen the pressure to bring it back. “Flickers” however, remove their thumb entirely so that the joystick snaps back to its neutral position. The issue with flicking is that when you release the joystick, it doesn’t immediately snap back to neutral. Instead, it bounces slightly in the opposite direction before resting at 0. Depending on how loose your joystick has become over time, this snap-back can be extremely high. This is what causes the player to turn, and why increasing the deadzone generally fixes the problem.

Deadzones, however, are not a perfect fix, because it means the player must move their joystick further in a direction before input is detected. This can result in a feeling of sluggishness for players who are hypersensitive to input latency. So, after three different attempts, we’ve implemented a complicated array of checks that ensure flick turning does not occur, even when the deadzone is set to 0. We’ve tested extensively (and broke two of our joysticks in the process), and we hope it fixes the issue for players. There might still be edge cases where this happens, so we’ll keep a vigilant eye on this.

TL;DR: Interpreting inputs in a game is a nightmare.

INPUT CHANGES:

Implemented a new “Flick Stick check” into player inputs to prevent players randomly turning.

Raised the default deadzone from 0.25 -> 0.4. If you were below this value, it’ll bump you up. You can lower this back down to 0.25 after this patch if you wanted.

Made Left Stick take priority over Right Stick while aiming (fixes an issue for players not being able to aim if they have a very loose Right Stick).

ECONOMY

Ore Update (Buff)

Ore scaling increased (speed at which ore drops go up as room level raises).

Bonus Ore from Silver chests increased from 50% to 60%

Commanders Ore base drop rate and scaling rate increased.

Skill Tree Update (Buff)

Lowering the cost of all of the “base stat” skills to help speed up the early, mid, and late game for players (NG0, NG1-4, NG5+), and to also reduce the punishment for players who like to spread out early.

Base cost and scaling for Tier 1 Armor, Focus and Dexterity skills slightly reduced.

Base cost and scaling for Tier 2 Armor, Focus and Dexterity skills moderately reduced.

Base cost and scaling for Tier 3 Armor, Focus and Dexterity skills significantly reduced.

Base cost and scaling for Tier 3 Strength, Intelligence, Vitality, Equip Weight and Rune Weight significantly reduced.

Living safe is our way of helping new players if they’re struggling to collect large amounts of gold in a single run. We’re reducing the cost significantly so that people will be more willing to invest points into it and can reap the benefits earlier on.
