The Super Game was going to involve the development of multiple other projects at Sega, which would then fall under a single umbrella.

During its recent earnings report, Sega announced that its planned Super Game project has been cancelled. The project was originally unveiled back in 2021. The company had previously stated that it was “aimed at online and global markets” and that it would be a combination of multiple projects.

In 2022, executive vice president Shuji Utsumi revealed a few details about it, revealing that multiple titles were being developed as part of its Super Game project. He had also noted that this supposed Super Game would go “beyond the framework of conventional games.”

“We are developing multiple titles within the framework of ‘Super Game’, and although it depends on each title, there is no doubt that it will become an interactive title that goes beyond the framework of conventional games,” Utsumi said at the time. “For example, in the past, people who played games were called gamers, but now watching games is a culture, and those people may be called gamers as well. I think there is great potential in the relationship between the people who play the game and the people who watch it.”

No other details about this Super Game had been revealed, however, which should make its cancellation come as no surprise. In the meantime, the company is continuing its efforts to bring back its classic collection of gaming IPs into the limelight. Just last month, Sega kicked off the Sega Universe with the tagline “No old, stay gold.”

While what the Sega Universe will entail outside of new merchandise remains to be seen, the company has confirmed that Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Streets of Rage, Rent A Hero, Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, Dynamite Deka, Sakura Wars, and SGGG are part of this initiative. This collection of games spans all the way back from old-school arcade machines to the company’s final console, the Dreamcast.

When it comes to some of its other older IP, the company had announced in 2023 that it was working on new entries in franchises like Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. Since this announcement, there has been a new Shinobi game, dubbed Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which you can read more details about in our review.

As for its other projects, Sega has largely maintained its silence. However, back in December 2023, the company had confirmed that its new Jet Set Radio title will be open-world. Rumors have also indicated that the company is working on a remake of the original Jet Set Radio as well. However, with the reports noting that its Jet Set Radio reboot was going to be part of Sega’s Super Game plan, its fate remains unknown.

Through a recruitment video from a couple of years ago, Sega also confirmed that its new Crazy Taxi game will be a live service “massively multiplayer” experience, and that the in-game world will be designed to be “theme park-like” while still maintaining some degree of realism. These elements will work alongside the classic Crazy Taxi gameplay of picking up and dropping off passengers at high speeds, complete with police chases and elaborate stunts.

For the first time in an RGG Studio game, your character's left and right limbs can be controlled separately to execute devastating attacks.

Knives, mallets, hammers – all this and more are at Makoto’s disposal as he goes about his journey in Stranger Than Heaven. But Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio didn’t simply recycle the combat from Like a Dragon. Instead, its new IP offers a brand new system that producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto described as “one of the biggest features.”

So how does it work? Well, you essentially control the left and right sides of Makoto’s body independently. Pressing RB and RT (or R1 and R2) will attack with his right arm and leg, while LB and LT/L1 and L2 attack with his left arm and leg. It’s highly reminiscent of Tekken, which maps a limb to each face button.

When pressing these buttons in sequence, Makoto will react accordingly and execute combos. You can charge attacks, use one arm to block and strike with the other, or press LT and RT/L2 and R2 to tackle and mount an enemy. Tackling them near the stairs results in both parties tumbling down.

Of course, alongside more basic tools and weapons, you’ll also discover “masterworks of old” and “brand-new inventions of the era” with unique passives and special attacks. Upgrading these will increase their potency, though you’ll likely have to find the right materials.

And in true RGG Studio fashion, you have cinematic combat sections, including (but not limited to) fisticuffs on a moving vehicle, instakill attacks, and context-sensitive actions. For example, one scene features Makoto holding an enemy while they’re punched in the stomach and quietly knocked out.

Launching this Winter, Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up into quite the release, especially when factoring in the story and showman system. It’s coming to Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

While Makoto puts together compositions in his youth, he'll eventually become a showman who can organize lavish gigs and recruit artists.

Till now, Stranger Than Heaven’s gameplay loop has involved a lot of walking around, smacking fools, and partaking in minigames. But in keeping with the evolution of entertainment in Japan, one of its core systems actually revolves around being a showman.

Makoto, the protagonist, has a “keen ability to find the music in everyday life” and uses “sounds as ideas for future compositions,” as game director Mikonobu Abe describes it. You may hear a man snoring, a dog barking, or a train passing by, and use those to create songs with various composers. When he becomes a showman down the line, Makoto will recruit musicians and organize gigs, right down to the show structure and set list.

After putting up posters advertising the show, he can then watch it live. Of course, alongside musicians, he’ll also run into important singers played by real-world artists, including Takashi (Satoshi Fujihara), who actually thinks of Makoto as his “aniki.” There’s also Suzy, played by Tori Kelley, who also helped write the game’s theme song.

Other characters like Keiko Shirai (played by Ado) weren’t fully detailed, but each has their own flaws and dreams, just like Makoto and his friend Yu. The real question is whether we can get Orpheus, played by Snoop Dogg, to perform. Here’s hoping.

Stranger Than Heaven launches this Winter for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It’s also coming to Game Pass on day one and will support Xbox Play Anywhere.

As Makoto Daito, players embark on a 50-year journey across five different cities, including Kamurocho, to accomplish his dream.

Xbox returned with a Special Look focused on RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven, shining the spotlight on the story, characters, and much more. However, executive director Masayoshi Yokoyama also dropped a bombshell, confirming that it would launch this Winter on Xbox Series X/S, PC and PS5 (alongside Game Pass on day one).

The story focuses on Makoto Daito (Yu Shirota), a half-American, half-Japanese boy who leaves San Francisco to get away from cruelty in 1915 and travels to his mother’s birthplace – Japan. However, he’s on a ship that belongs to the smuggler Orpheus (played by Snoop Dogg) and encounters Yu Shinjo (Dean Fujioka). Together, they leave the ship upon arriving in Japan, but their paths diverge greatly.

Makoto is more the brawn, while Yu is more calculating and seeks to reshape Japan. The former works as a sidekick to Orpheus and slowly earns his way up before reuniting with the latter years later in Minami, Osaka. Things progressively heat up with the Yakuza, the Italian Mafia and even the Japanese government as they seek to leave their mark on the world. Of course, many other notable cast members await, including Tori Kelly (who plays Suzy) and Ado.

Starting in Kokura, Fukuoka, with its debauchery and plethora of workers (not to mention minigames like cards and arm-wrestling), players will then venture to Kure, Hiroshima, known for its shipbuilding, heavy industry, and modern Japanese culture alongside a maze of waterways and numerous hills. Minami is steeped in foreign culture and offers shooting minigames and betting, while Atami, Shizuoka, is more refined with airports and whatnot.

Interestingly, it all culminates in Kamurocho, Shinjuku, where a “tremendous secret” is revealed. Potential tie-ins to the Tojo Clan? Time will tell, but for now, Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up into something very special.

Art director Kevin McDowell and battle product owner David Petry focused quite a bit on the sheer scale afforded to them by Warhammer 40,000.

Creative Assembly has been hard at work on its next major strategy game—Total War: Warhammer 40,000. During a recent livestream, battle product owner David Petry and art director Kevin McDowell revealed a few new details about the highly anticipated title, along with giving us our first look at the in-game depiction of a hive waste world from the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

A key aspect of the game described by the duo is the sheer sense of scale. The planet showcased, for example, will have one of four biomes that have been confirmed for the game so far—arid, temperate, ice, and waste. Each planet will also have its own type of civilization, from sparsely populated frontier planets to fully civilized hive worlds. Players will take on battles from region to region on the continents of these planets, and each star system will have a “handful” of planets. Without going into specifics, McDowell noted that “It’s going to be dozens and dozens of planets in a system.”

“It gives a really cool opportunity for you to encounter more desolate wasteland places,” explained Petry. “You can imagine when you end up fighting on the perimeters of these hives, you’re going to have these wasteland battles effectively that are pretty much empty. Like some bits punctuating things, but largely it’s pretty desolate out there, bar a few points of interest. And then of course, when you work your way towards and into an actual hive, you’re going to be fighting these much more dense, much more choke point-oriented battles.”

We also get a look at a battle map from the Hive World, dubbed the Upper Hive Plateau. “There’s going to be a really, really wide variety of spaces that you can fight in this game,” Petry said. “You’re going to be able to fight in much more dense environments and much more sparse ones.”

Throwing another wrench into the in-game worlds will be the fact that players will get to leave their marks on the battlefield. This means structures and geographical features can be affected. For example, forests offering cover to enemy soldiers can be destroyed.

“One thing that we found with this universe is that everything is on such an incredible scale,” said Petry. “That even these intense spaces, when you get down into actually looking at them, are absolutely huge. There are these massive areas that you can conduct combat within, so even when you’re dealing with these intense spaces, often, actually, the spaces you can work through are still pretty sizable.”

“You can fit a sizable army in a lot of these spaces. And then in many of those spaces where things do get tight, there are opportunities to remove buildings, make it a little bit bigger if that’s your playstyle. If you’ve got an army that really values line of sight, then that can really, really help you there because, ‘I don’t want those. Get rid of them.’”

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is being developed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It doesn’t yet have a release date, however.

Majima is all set to bring his signature style of chaos and precision to the tracks, complete with his own vehicle to celebrate his debut.

After Mega Man made his way to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds last month, it’s Yakuza’s Goro Majima who’s making his way to the races as a sort of break from being an absolute legend in his own franchise.

His debut is part of some free DLC that SEGA has lined up for its racer, and he joins Red from Angry Birds and Arle from Puyo Puyo (who’s still pending). Of course, he gets his own vehicle, the Goromaru, themed after his recent trip to Hawaii. There’s quite a bit of fun stuff to mark the occasion, beginning with a Captain Majima Festival that runs from April 30th all the way to May 3rd, which coincides with a Free Weekend to try out all the game has to offer until May 4th.

Additionally, you can grab Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds at a very generous discount until May 7th as part of SEGA’s Golden Week Promotion on Steam. That’s quite a good deal considering that this one was a very capable racer, something we praised in our review.

With all paid DLC characters released, one has to wonder what’s next for the racer, especially with Sega expecting another million sales by the end of the current fiscal year. Even more surprises are seemingly in store, so stay tuned for updates.

Creative Assembly is also hiring for a Game Design Director to "define and deliver a long-term roadmap" and "a multi-year release plan."

Creative Assembly’s sequel to Alien: Isolation received its first proper teaser today, and while details are sparse, it’s at least a sign that development is progressing. Thankfully, that’s not the only one, as the studio posted listings seeking a Senior Development Manager and Game Design Director.

They also provided new details on the sci-fi survival horror, namely that it’s developed on Unreal Engine 5 (its predecessor used the studio’s own engine). Then there’s the Game Design Director listing, with one of the day-to-day responsibilities stated to be defining and delivering “a long-term roadmap” and “scoping an ambitious multi-year release plan for the project.”

It seemingly indicates that Creative Assembly is planning to ramp up development, which is a good sign. However, the “multi-year” part potentially means it could be a while before we see it released. Which wouldn’t be the biggest surprise – the project entered “early development” last year, and we’ve yet to see any gameplay, much less learn its official title.

Good things come to those who wait, of course. With the amount of time it’s taken for a sequel to Alien: Isolation to even get greenlit, one can only hope that it’s worth it. Stay tuned for more details, and in the meantime, check out our review of the original, where we praised its recreation of the setting, the Xenomorph’s AI, and much more.

A ruined building in the dark, a telephone in the rain - Creative Assembly sure knows how to tease its long-awaited survival horror sequel.

While the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest undoubtedly had its share of news over the weekend, today is Alien Day, celebrating the 47th anniversary of the first film’s release. Obviously, this meant a lot of TV and film announcements, but Sega and Creative Assembly took the opportunity to release the first teaser for the sequel to Alien: Isolation.

Titled “False Sense of Security,” it opens with the camera slowly zooming in on a door in the dark, which subsequently opens into a rainy night. A phone with “Emergency” on it is beeping before cutting to black. Before the first transition, however, it’s worth noting that the building complex seemed torn up.

Perhaps the result of something cutting loose and causing havoc? Mayhaps a Xenomorph or three? While it doesn’t have an official name, release date, platforms, gameplay, etc, Creative Assembly clearly has a vision for the sequel. All that remains is to see where it goes.

If you haven’t played the original, Alien: Isolation launched in 2014 for consoles and PC to fairly strong praise. Set 15 years after the first film, it starred Amanda Ripley, who ventures aboard the Sevastopol to search for her mother, Ellen. Naturally, things take a turn for the worse, as she must evade a seemingly invincible Xenomorph to survive.

While Sega has been vague about its plans to bring back these classics, the initiative seems to involve merchandise, among other things.

While Sega had previously confirmed that it had been working on bringing back some of its older franchises – namely Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi – the company has now announced a wider initiative, dubbed the Sega Universe, to spotlight its old IP. Going with the tagline “No old, stay gold,” the company has acknowledged on its official website that “With changing eras, some things were lost.”

The official Sega Universe website is a bit vague about the company’s larger plans when it comes to these old IPs. However, among the ideas it seems to be exploring is to explore a world “beyond games”, and expand into “film, music, fashion, and even further forms of entertainment.” A video, which you can check out, gives us some examples of these expansion plans.

The video showcases what appears to be a new line of merchandise that will revolve around older Sega IP, like NiGHTS and Sakura Wars. The character in the video eventually decides to open her window, only to see a cityscape dotted with references to classic Sega games like Rent A Hero and OutRun, among others.

The complete list of its classic franchises that Sega is targeting appears to be Fantasy Zone, OutRun, Streets of Rage, Rent A Hero, Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, Dynamite Deka, Sakura Wars, and SGGG. The website also lets you sample some classic tracks from the soundtrack of these games, which span across platforms from the old-school arcade machines, all the way to Sega’s final console – the Dreamcast.

As for its reboot of Jet Set Radio, Sega had confirmed back in December 2023 that it would feature an open world. While not too many details about it have been revealed as of yet, the company has promised players that they can “experience the ‘rebellion movement that feels free in a suffocating society” and that they can “make friends, increase your fans, and create a movement.”

Rumors from 2024 had indicated that the core structure of the Jet Set Radio reboot is going to be similar to Fortnite. What this means is still unknown, but shooter mechanics are reportedly “planned” to be added to the game, joining the original’s graffiti and skating-centric gameplay. Along with this, reports have also indicated that a remake of the original Jet Set Radio is planned for release before the reboot.

With Crazy Taxi, Sega has confirmed that its planned reboot of the series will be “massively multiplayer”, allowing players to drive around in an open world. These details were confirmed through official job listings, which also described the reboot as being “theme park-like”.

Sega hasn’t yet confirmed when the reboots of Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi will be released. However, a report from February 2024 had indicated that Sega, at least at the time, was aiming to release its new Jet Set Radio game in 2026, with Crazy Taxi slated for a 2027 launch. Both titles are also reportedly being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the other console and PC versions.

Joe Musashi takes on Dr Eggman, Goro Majima and Death Adder while exploring five new stages, each complete with new music.

There’s a powerful trio of enemies heading to Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, and the chances are you’re probably familiar with them already.

The Sega Villains Stage DLC is bringing Yakuza’s Goro Majima, Sonic’s Dr. Eggman, and Death Adder from Golden Axe to the game’s world via mysterious rifts that Joe Musashi is trying to close by the most obvious method: Defeating the source of their power. That’s going to lead to some memorable showdowns with the aforementioned characters, who are in a decidedly different element than what we’ve come to expect.

There are five new stages aside from the three bosses, alongside new music tracks inspired by them. Aside from two Boss Rush modes featuring the new threats, there’s a trio of ninpos and skins each to round things off. We were very happy with the base game last year, and there’s no reason to believe that the DLC is going to be any different. It’s time to let your katana sing as you side-scroll through some chaotic fighting against familiar yet formidable opponents,

If you’re still on the fence, perhaps watching Joe take on an assortment of its new additions in the launch trailer below can help you decide if you’re diving in right away.
