Sega has confirmed that the development of the upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour involved the use of generative AI. This fact was first spotted on the game’s Steam store page, where Sega revealed its use of AI in the AI Generated Content Disclosure section of the page. The company noted that, while generative AI was used, the tools were not used for any of the actors in Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

“At Sega Corporation, we utilize generative AI as a support tool for developers, aiming to provide better content to our users and enable developers to focus more on creative tasks,” wrote the company. “We have used such generative AI support tools during development of Crazy Taxi: World Tour. No AI was used in reference to the performers in the game.”

The company further clarified this with a statement to Game Informer, where it repeated much of the wording from its AI generated content disclosure on Steam. The company confirmed that generative AI was used to create background assets in Crazy Taxi: World Tour, and that these assets were not used without first being reviewed by the game’s development team.

“Generative AI was used to support our teams during the development of background assets for ‘Crazy Taxi: World Tour’,” said the company. “Assets generated were still subject to review by the development team.” Sega went on to reaffirm that it had not used any AI-generated tools with regard to the various in-game performers.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour was officially unveiled over the weekend with a trailer giving us a look at its gameplay. The trailer also confirmed that many aspects of the original Crazy Taxi would be returning, including fan-favorite musical tracks like All I Want by The Offspring, which was played during the trailer.

In terms of gameplay, Crazy Taxi: World Tour will stay true to its roots by offering a fast-paced arcade-styled driving experience. Players will be tasked with picking up passengers in various parts of the city and dropping them off at their destination. Along the way, players will also be encouraged to drive recklessly by making use of manoeuvres like drifting, jumping, and weaving in and out of the way of oncoming traffic. While the trailer indicated that San Francisco will serve as one of the core settings of Crazy Taxi: World Tour, the trailer has also confirmed that we will see more cities from all over the world.

Sega has stated that Crazy Taxi: World Tour will also include a variety of online multiplayer modes. While the company hasn’t yet confirmed concrete details about this, it has noted that players will get to showcase their driving ability to others across all platforms, and has referred to the multiplayer modes as being “action-packed”.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour is coming to PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The title doesn’t yet have a release date aside from a general 2027 window. It is going to be the first mainline entry in the Crazy Taxi franchise since the release of Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller on Xbox in 2002 and PC in 2004. In the meantime, there have been several mobile games released on iOS and Android.
