The 90s saw an explosion of innovative games, but not all of them got the love they deserve.

The 90s are generally considered the golden age of gaming. A plethora of amazing games were released, giving gamers more than enough to pick from. Naturally, some of the best titles slipped through the fingers of even the most ardent gaming fans. Fortunately, this feature will alert to you some of the underappreciated games that deserve more attention than they received.

System Shock (1994)

The game that started it all as far as story driven action and sci-fi shooters are concerned. Yes, we are talking about System Shock. At the time of its release, it garnered good reviews and slowly but surely built a cult following. System Shock is ahead of its time in many ways, blending cyberpunk elements with horror. Players take control of a nameless protagonist who wishes to put a stop to the nefarious AI SHODAN. It may be difficult for modern gamers to get into the swing of things, but it is worth it.

Is the purple dragon getting his long-awaited sequel as well?

Earlier this year, just before the launch of the new consoles, we got a hit of nostalgia with Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. While not actually done by the original developers, it’s framed as something of a long lost sequel to the original PlayStation trilogy, and we were big fans. It seems like it’s also teasing a new game in the franchise as well, but it may even be doing so for a comrade of the same era.

As noticed by Twitter user Spyro Universe, in the artbook dedicated to Crash 4, there is an artwork there and if you look at the bottom you’ll very clearly see a logo for a Spyro 4, something that the book directly points you toward in case you miss it.

Like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro began with a trilogy of titles in the PlayStation era, developed by Insomniac Games. That developer moved on and while there were sequels afterward by others, the franchise never quite reached that peak again until those original three titles were remade a few years ago. Take into account we’ve had rumors that a new Spyro game was in the works, and there you go. It could just be a coy and playful reference, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if Spyro follows the same path as his PlayStation bud relatively soon.

Give them the shot in the arm they need.

These last few years have seen a number of revivals, revitalizations, and reboots for established franchises, and thankfully, a great number of them have been successful in what they’ve tried to do. Calls for revivals for beloved franchise are, as such, more frequently heard than ever- and there are some that need that earlier than most. In this feature, we’re going to talk about fifteen video game properties that we’re hoping will be rebooted in the not-too-distant future.

BANJO-KAZOOIE

Once one of the premier 3D platforming properties in the industry, Banjo-Kazooie is often considered one of Rare’s greatest accomplishments, and has more time has passed since the series went away, demands for a return have kept on growing fiercer. The fact that 2008’s Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts wasn’t at all what fans wanted it to be has only made those demands louder. Whether or not Microsoft will see the value in bringing it back, or whether or not the Rare of today will be able to recreate the magic of the Rare of the late 90s are both big question marks, of course, but it’s definitely a series that deserves another shot.

An active leaker says the purple dragon will be back next year for another adventure.

Recently, YouTuber TheGamingRevolution talked about a bunch of games reportedly in development at Activision, including multiple Crash and Call of Duty games, a Tony Hawk game, and more. Just yesterday, they took to Twitter again to speak of one more title.

Reportedly, a new Spyro game is in the works at Activision. They did not go into detail about whether it’s another remake or a completely new entry, or who its developer will be (Spyro Reignited Trilogy was developed by Toys for Bob). They did, however, say in a separate tweet that more information on this game will follow “in the coming months,” and that we shouldn’t expect it to launch anytime soon.

As always, until we hear anything official from Activision, we’re going to have to treat this as a rumour, but given how well-received the recent Crash and Spyro revivals have been and how well they’ve sold, it’s not a stretch to assume that Activision is going to want to keep that momentum going. Either way, stay tuned to GamingBolt for more updates.
