Other PS4 titles include Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, West of Dead, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness and Contra: Rogue Corps (which are backwards compatible on PS5). The PS4 and PS5 titles include Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, Unpacking, Planet Coaster: Console Edition, Tails Noir, Cloudpunk, Call of the Sea and PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls.

The only PS5-exclusive title is This War of Mine: Final Cut. The above titles are a part of the Game Catalog for Extra and Premium subscribers. The latter gets access to three Star Ocean titles – Star Ocean First Departure R, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Star Ocean: The Last Hope – 4K and FHD Remaster – and Dragon’s Crown Pro, all on PS4.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the Star Ocean series. It’s not had an original entry for many years, and we’ve just now getting remasters of the some of the classics in the storied Japanese RPG series. Now we’ve got another one, which originally was a remake of the first game, allowing us to revisit the first game in the series (again).

Star Ocean: First Departure R is an HD remaster of a remake of the first title that originally came out on the PSP. The launch trailer shows off the new artwork as well as some of the gameplay as it highlights the various characters and setting you’ll be revisiting (or visiting, if this is your first time experiencing the game). Square Enix is the developer of some of the biggest Japanese RPG series in the world with the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest under their banner. But it can be easy to forget at times that they have quite the history of other RPGs besides those two. One such blast from the past is Star Ocean, a series that dropped off last gen. Well, it’s making a comeback with a HD remaster of a remake of the first time, and it’ll be here by the end of the year.

Square Enix announced that Star Ocean: First Departure R would be releasing worldwide across all regions in December. As of now there’s only been mention of a digital release, with a price tag of $20.99 / £16.99 / £16.99. Originally released for the PSP, the remaster will take us all the way back to the beginning of the franchise, and it’s up for preorder in most regions now.

Earlier in the year it was announced that the first entry in the Star Ocean series would be getting a new remaster in the form of Star Ocean: First Departure R. It marked the first time the title made it outside Japan via the PSP and now we get some of our first screenshots and details from it.

The game will feature not only a high definition upgrade from the original PSP release, but new voice recordings from the original Star Ocean cast. The character illustrations have been redrawn to be closer to the original designs, but don’t worry, you can see still switch back and forth between that and the classic look.

Star Ocean: First Departure R will release for PlayStation 4 and Switch at some point, but no date is set as of now. The game will be featured at the Tokyo Game Show, and in the meantime you can take a look at some screenshots to get an idea of what to expect from the game’s upgraded visuals.

Star Ocean is one of those Japanese RPG series that always seems to be flirting with a comeback, but Square Enix never pulls the trigger. The series isn’t totally gone though, as it has received some high profile remasters lately, while today we got the announcement that Star Ocean: First Departure R would be coming for the PS4 and Switch.

The game is actually an HD remaster of an enhanced remake of the first game in the series. Called Star Ocean: First Departure, that game released all the way back in 2007 for the PSP. It also marked the first time the original game had been available worldwide in any form, since Star Ocean was originally never released outside Japan.
