We don’t know when – or even if – we will get a new WipEout game, but we are at least getting the three previous games in the franchise consolidated into one package, and remastered for the PS4 soon. And ahead of WipEout Omega Collection‘s launch next month, PlayStation Access has shared a brand new video of the title, showing off some blazing, high speed split screen gameplay.

The footage is from a standard PS4, and shows off 1080p and a blistering 60 frames per second- these games may be old PS3 and PS Vita games, but they still look great, especially after the remastering work that has been put into them.

Make sure to check out the video for yourself below. WipEout Omega Collection, which includes WipEout HD, WipEout Fury, and WipEout 2048, will be releasing on the PS4 exclusively on June 6. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information.

Okay, that looks badass.

Raise your hands if you were saddened by Sony’s closure of Studio Liverpool, formerly known as Pygnosis, because it meant the end of the WipEout franchise. So was I. WipEout was a pretty awesome series, and it offered a high speed futuristic take on racing games that was like nothing else on the market- particularly since Nintendo killed F-Zero more than a decade ago.

Apparently, even game developers felt the loss of WipEout, as there was an entire Kickstarter for a game that would ‘fill the void’ left behind by WipEout on the PS4. The Kickstarter seems to have gone through, Refract Studios has confirmed that Distance, a game that is pretty much WipEout in all but name, will be coming to the PS4 in 2015.

It will also be made available on PC (on Windows, Mac, and Linux), and will in face be available in Early Access on Steam for Windows next week.

"It’s an energetic mix of experience and new talent.”

Studio Liverpool was, at one point, was Sony’s oldest and most relied on first party development company. The studio produced hit games such as the F1 , G-Police, Colony Wares, and WipeOut. The company’s success is what made for such a shock when Sony shut them down following the release of the PS Vita game, Little Deviants.

However, according to IGN, a new studio named Firesprite has been formed and is comprised of former employees of Studio Liverpool.

“Firesprite came about organically, but we all had a shared vision. The founding team met up socially after Studio Liverpool and we talked about all the things we had achieved over the years, the platform launches, the variety of games, going back to the Psygnosis days and through to F1 and WipEout. We knew we wanted to carry on making great games,” Managing Director Graeme Ankers revealed.

He continued to comment on the Firesprite team:

“Over the years, we worked with some of the best games content creators and quickly built a team of 20 people, 15 of which had been on the journey with us through the years at Studio Liverpool. It’s an energetic mix of experience and new talent.”

It will be interesting to see what PlayStation 4 and PS Vita games will come out of this latest combination.

Sony has closed Studio Liverpool, one of the oldest studios in the world.

Sony has confirmed that it has closed Studio Liverpool, and has released a statement too. Very sad news for the developers as they stuck by Sony during terrible times and always pushed all their latest initiatives like Move and 3D.

As part of SCE Worldwide Studios, we do regular reviews to ensure that the resources we have can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects in an increasingly competitive market place. As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current and planned projects for the short and medium term and have decided to make some changes to our European Studios.

It has been decided that Liverpool Studio should be closed. Liverpool Studio has been an important part of SCE Worldwide Studios since the outset of PlayStation, and have contributed greatly to PlayStation over the years. Everyone connected with Liverpool Studio, past and present, can be very proud of their achievements.

However, it was felt that by focusing our investment plans on other Studios that are currently working on exciting new projects, we would be in a stronger position to offer the best possible content for our consumers.

Our Liverpool Facility will continue to operate, housing a number of other vital WWS!E and SCEE Departments.

This should not take anything away from the great work WWS are doing and the incredible games and services that we have made, and continue to make, both for this coming year and further in the future.

British gaming industry deserves much better than these and the reason given by Sony isn’t strong enough to warrant closure. Coming from someone who loves their games, this is the worst thing Sony could do.

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
